Yeah the big "issue" with doing elo like this is that a driver goes against the same driver repeatedly for a whole season which kind of defeats some of the assumptions that make elo ratings work
Perez fucks everything up, even Maxs' deserved higher ELO. On the other hand. Fernando is still the GOAT so everything is how it should be. (Does Checos low Elo and career crashing and burning mean there was a second Crashgate that kept Alonso on top?)
I actually did a programming project a month ago where I made my own version of the F1 scoring system. I attributed penalty points to the drivers at the start of each race depending on their current constructors' standing. So after race 1 the constructor standings are taken into account and any driver that is on the team winning the constructors' championship get -10 points to start the race using the modern points system. -9 for 2nd place team members and so on until you get to -1 for the last team. It was completely inspired by your ELO engine and I referenced your original video in my project. I wasn't going to comment about it since it was just something I chose to do for school since I could pick anything I was interested in making, but now that you mentioned vSCORE I thought maybe my system could provide a little bit of inspiration. :)
I'm looking forward to seeing the new vSCORE system in action! Love the videos! aboslutly you're my favourite F1 creator with your dope video ideas! Keep it up
Thinking about how to improve on a system like this, but there are so few stats to use in F1 compared to other sports. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
I've thought about this too on my free time and tried to think some sort of multiplier for the car based on best finish on every race. I got no knowledge on how to make it work properly but it had been fun hobby to think about. In the end, I just end up adding my vibes when ranking drivers :D (I don't know rely what I'm doing) Looking forward to see your results.
We need a way to compare drivers in different teams. That might be possible by having a separate Elo for teams. We could then incorporate this into the formula for Driver Elo so that, for example, drivers from high-Elo teams don't gain as many Elo points for winning races as drivers from low-Elo teams.
yeah the system I'm working on updates car rating after ever race as well for exactly this reason. If your car is expected to finish P5 and you finish P7 then in theory you've failed. It's complicated with things like winter break and teammates having different upgrades but it's better than not considering it
@@MrVsGarage Cool! As a chess player with a maths degree who also used to watch formula 1, this hits a sweet intersection spot for me. It's the kind of thing I could easily get obsessed with 😂 Can't wait to see what you come up with!
I wonder if there is a way to somehow implement number of races the driver has raced into how much they gain/lose such that the more experienced you are, the slower you gain and faster you lose and vice versa for the rookies coming into f1 next season.
2:27 one of the big issues with using ELO here is that they are not equally rated drivers. Even though they have equal machinery or close to equal machinery, a rookie versus someone who has been racing for 6-7 years isn’t quite equivalent. I think that awaiting based on experience would also be necessary to breakdown drivers like this.
I have been waiting for this video since last year 😂 Also someone already made a pretty nice ranking system, like the one you are thinking about, if you want inspiration you can find it, or I can send it to you. It sadly was not updated in a couple of years.
@pritdutta Damm TH-cam won't even let me post the link in any form, search for "f1metrics" as one word, his model also compares teammates, but over their 3 best Saisons and it takes experience and age of the teammates into account. it also has info on all the drivers of the top 100, as well as a top of every decade, shame it was not updated since 2019
Awesome work MrV! Didn't you create a grading system that gave you the average F1 Driver and therefore the best of all time? I can not understand how that system works different than the Elo one, I love if you could add that explanation to the video!
The big flaw with the elo system is that you need to outperform your teammate consistenly, but also need fresh high-performing teammates to outperform. Because right now we are just looking at a chess grandmaster beating up his little nephew at christmass. Hence why the elo system is bad. I can't really think of a way to solve this of the top of my head so I'm excited to see how the vSCORE will solve this. EDIT: Most likely, the system would also rate the cars with an elo-like system, which could then be taken into consideration when comparing drivers across teams. But that again begs the question of how you would rate a car independent of the drivers inside.
Thanks for updating us, I had been wondering whether Verstappen had managed it but it seems the brakes really messed things up. Could you keep somewhat of an eye on it and at least make a community post if he does brake the record?
I've had a crazy idea on how to try and improve this Elo Engine but unfortunately don't know how to create one. Basically you would run the same system but there would be an element of race result in absolute to determine points. If someone in the comments or the Green Screen Man himself is interest i could explain it in detail as i think it might very well work
@MrVsGarage: maybe base the elo off beating all drivers...so for every driver you beat you get points. And to make it fair you could add the elo points to the points scored. That way a win will still increase the elo rating even though you are crushin the competitors each and every race.(?)
Performance vs teammate and performance vs the rest of the grid are different perspectives of looking at it. Of course the argument of "equal machinery" (even though upgrade packages get more and more selective and favoring one driver over the other throughout the season, guess some are more equal than their mates) may contest the results of that. Though on the other hand, teams technically have the capability to produce equal, carbon copy, cars independently of eachother, however low the chance of that happening without spygates. It can be argued teams with a disadvantaged car simply bottled their development. Would think if you'd compare each driver vs every other driver and extrapolate a driver vs grid comparison from that, it may be a more accurate representation. There might be logical fallacy in my reasoning, too tired to be bothered reflecting on that right now.
How about finding the "best" world champion, the one who won the title in the season Ruth the highest combined grid elo/vscore and then the "luckiest" f1 champion, who won the title in the lowest combined grid elo / vscore
Yoc can try Elo for all drivers. 1 place means win points from 2-20place. 2 place - lose pts for 1 place and wins from 3-20. 3 place - lose pts from 1-2 pl and wins from 4-20. And so on.
But then the car would really influence your ratings. Russel would have some of the lowest ratings ever before moving to Mercedes, because he had three years in by far the worst car. And he really wasn't the worst driver
Love ur vid mate, keepp it up. Also please get ur ponytail back, I convinced my friend who looks exactly likr u but with no bear to get a pony tail but he's gonna get rid of it cuz ur changed
Elo isn’t great when you don’t have a variety of opponents. It might make sense to try a small k-value for the head to heads with all of the other drivers.
If you really wanna go meta statistics, you can put every f1 driver's vScore into a normal distribution, give each v score a z score, and definitively say that x driver is twice as good as y driver through multiplying z scores. Stats is cool, huh?
Given that this is your rating system for car drivers, I think it should be called vCAR. Plus it is your second stab at this, so maybe we could tag a B on the end, to show it was the second iteration?
Franco got a higher ELO than the RB, Haas, Saubers, Oscar and Carlos, i've seen enough, get him a seat at all 4 top teams and he can pick which one he likes most
If you are really bored you can make an ELO system for F1 esports which all have equal cars so everyone can be measured directly against each other
Yeah the big "issue" with doing elo like this is that a driver goes against the same driver repeatedly for a whole season which kind of defeats some of the assumptions that make elo ratings work

@MrVsGarage I certainly didn't. It was that cheating [smart] asymetric breaking hack that Redbull used that caused the DNF!!11!!

Well Perez has a low ELO exactly because of Max so it's not exactly his fault. But if he was replaced earlier then Max would definitely earn enough
