- In "John Mayer's Signal Chain Crash Course: 101 The Basics", we'll go over the foundation for his signal chain. Even the smallest of his boards are structured this way and it's the perfect starting point for those wanting to make their own Mayer pedalboard.

This is a great video, Justin! Good job on clearing up the confusion between a Leveler Katana and a Boost Katana! One thing I'd like to bring up is that on the 2013-2014 world tour, John did in fact use the effects loops in his Two Rock JM Sig's. While he didn't put delays through them, he did have a Bricasti M7 in the effects loop of each of the JM Sig's, and of course he sometimes uses the effects loop of the JMOD if he wants reverb through that amp as well. But I might be jumping ahead of myself if these situations are discussed in parts 2 or 3. Either way, great video and very easy to understand explanations!
Ha Josh I love this. Yes part 3 is gonna be kinda like “remember all this stuff I said? Well now here is when you can go against that”. The Reverb in an FX loop thing will be something I’m planning on discussing as for some people depending on their setup they may get better results that way as well!

Just found you today. Love your videos as I am a huge Mayer fan myself and ordered two silver sky’s; one with a maple and one with a rosewood neck….was hesitant as these are my first PRS’s but super excited!!!
I was considering a silver sky, but ended up going with a Fender American Ultra. Absolutely incredible, but still tempted to try a silver sky!

Great basics. It would be a good discussion on where John puts the Adrenalinne pedal in the signal chain. The pedal is not a typical effects pedal, especially for the synth arpeggiator sounds.

Thanks Alex! For the Chrono you can use it for any longer delay. A good example of John using the Chrono is during Slow Dancing in Manchester. th-cam.com/video/2KbMCblZS3g/w-d-xo.html About 6 mins in you can see him tapping in the tempo before the outro solo!

TS to turn your clean sound into the drive of the first solo of Slow Dancing live, usually all knobs past 12 at least and the Klon with gain but enough punch to do the harmony bits of Slow Dancing live. Together to hit the outro solo level.
3:15 first question I feel like he meant a bb preamp not a blues breaker, overdrive and boost which is what you were talking about

i like Klon > TS > BD2
It's obviously what sounds best to you! I would do BD-2 -> TS -> Klon. I genuinely like the TS into Klon sound then use the BD-2 to push the TS! But whatever floats your boat!
@@JustinJeske if you want the sound of the klon that will work but if you want the sound of the ts it should be the last pedal. If you want to push a ts with a blues driver then the the blues driver goes before the ts. I always like to use the klon to push my ts or whatever od I am using as the dominant sound. Personally I never use a klon as a dominant drive, always as a boost. Great video although I'm not much of a JM fan I am a Tube screamer fan.
No reverb pedal? Is there reverb in the amb John uses?
Do i need a compression pedal for a mayer tone? I notice you don't really have a lot of compression pedals on your mayer boards. I know you have the cali on your bigger board but on the small ones, why is compression not something that you think is mandatory? Thank you for your help :)

Yes John does use amp reverb most of the time and then would rely on his Bricasti rack units for the JMOD (No built in reverb). For people wanting to imitate John amp reverb does the job perfectly.

How about a KOT? Where do you put it in the order?
KOT is hard cause it’s a dual drive, and you can stack both sides for a great lead tone over a Blues Breaker into a TS. That would be total individual preference at that point I think
Do ever plan on actually demoing some sounds of these pedals through your gear?
Of course. I’ve mentioned quite a few times in videos and on my instagram I’m waiting on some things to make the perfect recording setup. Got my Two Rock coming hopefully very soon, bought the UA OX. Ordered a new IMac and am picking up a UA 4X once everything else arrives.

Don’t think so. That doesn’t matter anyway
Does the katana give more headroom ?
So a pedal can have lots of headroom, but you are always limited to the headroom of your amp. So it can’t add more if you are out of headroom. If that makes any sense.
Anyone else having trouble running klon into TS.? For me it’s muddy and unclear.

Reverb in general will be talked about in part 2! The basics just assume you have amp reverb to go off of, like how John uses amp reverb a lot of the time.
The Bricasti M7 is also not what I’d consider a part of the foundation for Mayers tone!

As far as what od to put first, which ever one you want to be dominant goes last. That means the first one will just be a boost and it will sound like the second one but louder, more or less. Who cares what John Mayer does?J.S.

Well in our facebook group with over 3000 people, the question of what order to place things in gets asked a lot. I think you’re forgetting everyone starts off not knowing anything and where to place stuff. This is for them to help, and literally titled “the basics” for a reason.

What equipment he is using doesn't matter. Pedels etc..Talent is what matters not equipment. His vocals., his music,his song writing ,his composing that's what we need to talk about, not what pedals he's buying ( which anybody could buy at the store.)
We all know his voice is weak, and we all know that a good musician doesn't need anything (any pedals) you just need a amp if your good.And lastly he has not earned the respect for people to call him by his name like he's that well known ,because in 20 years no one will know him. His music is not iconic enough,he has not earned that.Give credit where credit is due.
The best example I can give you is like a town you stop to fuel up before you get to the real town ( well that's John) he's just one of those towns that you have to fuel up before you get to where you're going ( the real town)
He is not the Beatles or Pink Floyd. You're speaking his name like he's that good .Like you can just speak his name and people will know what you're talking about. ." How he gets it all creamy".. oh my Lord...no.i can't believe I'm hearing this.
