  • In this video we will do an ultra deep dive into what pedals John Mayer had in his Bradshaw Rack Unit around the time of Where The Light Is during the Continuum Tour to try and fully understand what pedals he used for the iconic performance. This will hopefully give a greater understanding to what he was actually using and quell misconceptions like "he used a Klon Centaur during WTLI".

Great as always. I would love to see a Video on the Pick up Position he uses in different Songs. When does He use the 4th Position and what User positions does He commonly use? Thanks!

After buying two TS10s and trying it out for myself, I am certain that the second TS10 in that rack is not just a backup unit, but it in fact is the "red dot" overdrive.
Stacking two TS10s into each other, one with a little less gain than the other, is the way to get the WTLI "high gain" solo tones.
My theory is that he used the Bluesbreaker and the two TS10s in any given combination depending on the song and part, except for all three together at the same time.

I like these. Especially the belief video. Wondering about the speakers in the cabs for continuum?

Love it. Just got a blues breaker so I’d love to see how he used that!

Hey Justin, been checkin out this video lately because I've been trying to make a good preset on my Helix. Do you think he used the SS2 during WTLI show? If you check out videos of that pedal it is a pretty nice overdrive to stack. It could possibly be that extra boost for solos he used? I guess it is also possible that he used both of those TS10s that were shown in the rack. He could possibly have one set to be a slight crunch and the other have more gain?

Great video - as for the wah pedal, like you said it does not look to be a Keeley modified wah ; Keeley's wah modified cry baby pedals have a knob and a switch on the right hand side, and could not see that from the pics (but It could always be a one off personalised mod that Keeley made for him of course). I personally think that the wah tones JM got with the JM Trio (and at the Webster Hall concert) when he was using various versions of RMC wahs, were better than the wah tones in WTLI (although I do like those as well).

Great video Justin! One quick correction, at 7:29 you mention the CAE Line Driver and that it’s on all the time to provide line level signal. The line level portion of that comment is incorrect, as this whole signal should be running instrument level. The CAE is functioning similarly to a buffer or the EUNA to drive the cable lengths from the board to the rack, or from the rack to amps etc. just to preserve signal strength and integrity as capacitance etc will increase over long cable runs. Not a major error or anything, just wanted to clarify the difference between instrument and line level!

Great detective work. You’re like the Batman of JM gear.
Did JM go Bluesbreaker into TS10 or TS10 into Bluesbreaker?

Yes, the default order was always BB1 into TS10.

I guess he's maybe using the Fulltone 69 germanium fuzz on some songs like Good love is on the way's solo in combination with the univibe. He used this pedal during the trio era.

For me, the WTLI guitar tones are way too compressed. To my ears, his setup basically made his strats so overly-compressed that they had that muffled humbucker kind of tone to them. Probably the best/worst example of this, despite it being my favorite song of his, is on Belief. I’ve always wondered why he chose this combo, and I’m not knowledgeable enough to know how much the mic’ing/recording of his actual amp tone effected this. I could be completely wrong and it’s actually the sound of the recording and not the actual tones that are the problem, but either way, I think this is one of his worst sounding live recordings. Oddly enough, I think the best recording and live performance that he’s ever done is ACL 2007, which was recorded earlier that same year and sounds AMAZING, despite it being a TV broadcast. I was fortunate enough to get a copy of the direct board recording of that performance, and it’s still his best sounding performance, tone-wise, of his, to date, IMO.

I actually see what you mean now. Although I think this his tones were top notch I do agree they had a very compressed sound and did have that muffled him bucket tone. Good observation
