I like how Gene continuously assumes how shots are done or whatver and Ron Howard says no.

I do like that Ebert actual does to a degree judge Don't Tell Mom the Baby Sitter's Dead by who it's targeted towards. I've seen too many of these reviews that don't seem to get who these movies are made for.

The TV taping conversation in City Slickers is gold for us old enough to have had VHS tapes betray us
I'm more familiar with it's sequel since that played on TV much more often when I was growing up, but I think the original is a stronger film
.....look at me talking about movies I haven't seen on over a decade lol

Bad take on Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead. The kids in that movie were all of us at the time. It felt familiar and still holds up today. Predictable plot but good character development. The writing wasn’t that bad! Especially for a cult classic! City slickers however had par at best tv quality writing, for sake they delivered a cow on camera!!! But I also love that movie. Two thumbs up for both!!

The biggest problem with "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" was it's advertising. The previews were all about the babysitter and how awful she was, and that is what I was expecting when I rented this as a kid. I was so disappointed when (SPOILERS) the babysitter dies five minutes after she's alone with the kids. It was all downhill from there for me.

Too harsh on the Babysitter! I loved it as a kid, though my nostalgia may be skewing my objectivity.

Watched don’t tell mom the babysitter’s dead. Thought nostalgia would’ve biased me and I would realize it wasn’t good. Nope. I still like it. Although the whole “bellhop” look did not age well. Can’t believe that was a thing. Christina Applegate was funny.

I always thought these 2 were awful movie critics. They were ALWAYS extremely biased about movies and almost always hated movies that kids would like, such as Dont Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead, and others like Honey I Shrunk The Kids, They Live, The Wizard, and No Holds Barred. All of which are now cult classics from the 80s and 90s.
Granted they were sometimes low budget and often unappealing for adults, but these 2 were always way too biased and only gave good reviews to bad movies that have an acquired audience, such as philosophical films, foreign films, and anything to do with Shakespeare and the like.

agree. surprising that for well-know film critics, they could not separate their personal biases when assessing a film. maybe because they never made one to appreciate different genres or treatments. good critics must always look at the objective and intention of the movie to properly critique a flick. these guys just allow their biases to be swayed regardless of what the movie is trying to communicate.

Honey I Shrunk The Kids is a good family movie. They Live is a good but extremely heavy handed satire. The only moment of real brilliance is that absurd fight scene. I haven't see NHB or The Wizard but I can't imagine any value in the latter movie which is just one big Nintendo commercial.
As for your take on S&E in general. God forbid they show you something aside from the top five Box winners of the week.

Half the films you mentioned are GARBAGE, so the translation to your comment is: "I'm an IDIOT who likes bad movies, so I'll call them bad critics and accuse them of biases cuz they have better taste than me."

Baby sitter was awful because the writing was pathetic. I did not laugh once and C.A. gave a terrible performance. She knew this movie was gonna suck.

Gene thought women should have been more represented in the male bonding movie. If only he could see how films are made today.
