    That was a good week for the movies especially for acting. Hoffman, Newman , and Streep gave the performance of their careers and for those three that’s really saying something. Klein, Warden and Mason are great in supporting roles too. Streep won the best actress Oscar for Sophie’s Choice and Newman and Hoffman were nominated for Best Actor for Tootsie and the Verdict. Martin Short’s spoof of the scene shown on SCtV is beyond hilarious.

    You know- Jessica Lange nearly won both acting Oscars- in the same year. She won the Supporting Actress Oscar for Tootsie- and imagine if she had won the Best Actress Oscar she was nominated for Frances that ended up going to Streep for Sophie’s Choice… that would have been one of the greatest feats in movie history.

    • @KaejaeDoherty

      She was very deserving in Frances, but I'm still baffled by her winning for Tootsie
      First off, she was the Lead, but she never did anything I saw deserving of an Oscar
      Terri Garr was fabulous and was a deserving nominee
      That's a supporting role, but I still don't get her nomination and win in a movie I consider one of the Greatest

    Paul Newman should have won the Oscar. It was one of his best performances ever. Shame on Hollywood!!!

    • @redadamearth
      @redadamearth ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main issue, as Dustin Hoffman himself (who won) has always said, is that the entire IDEA of pitting movies or performances against each other, when they're often all great, but in totally different genres and styles, is ridiculous. For example, putting "Dances With Wolves" against "GoodFellas" - both movies are great in their own way, but couldn't be more different. All of the performances that year were great. Watch Hoffman's acceptance speech sometime - he basically says he refuses to believe he was "better" than anyone else nominated, included Newman.

    • @ronniebishop2496

      @@redadamearth Yes I’ve heard it, on and on but competition is the American way, even our Indian tribes determined their greatness by how powerful their enemies were. Only communist want everyone to get a trophy making all accomplishments worthless. I totally disagree with Dustin Hoffman as did Frank Sinatra only for different reasons. Paul Newman should have won it because he was much better, in my opinion.

    Gene's wrong... The Verdict is in the class of Anatomy of a Murder and all the best courtroom dramas ever filmed. I think what may even elevate it above others is Newman's performance and what I think for me is the character study and the subtle redemption of a broken man. The film works on both levels equally well.

    • @BULL.173
      @BULL.173 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, he’s definitely wrong. The Verdict is a superior courtroom drama by any metric. But in the same league as Anatomy of a Murder? Oof. I don’t know about that.

      Newman's summation argument is one of the best-written and most well-acted moments in movie history, IMO.

    • @gheller2261
      @gheller2261 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Frankly, I think the courtroom scenes are the film's biggest weakness. In fact, when it comes to the actual practice of law and procedure, the script reads as if nobody ever spoke to a lawyer. That it is so sloppy on the law brings the film down a level for me. It was saved by Newman's brilliance and James Mason was always fun to watch.

    I actually agree with Siskel here, which is rare for me. Sophie's Choice, the novel, is one of the greatest books I've read. It's a masterpiece. The movie rushed it and would have benefitted from a longer running time. An epic, like Siskel says. It could have run 31/2 hours and could have been one of the greatest films ever made. But they rushed the last half. It's a shame.

    Airplane II: The Sequel would've been a remembered movie, if they actually didn't make the first one back in 1980. I will admit I laughed at a few jokes and gags throughout (especially when they run out of coffee), but there were some bad edits and grim jokes I counted, in which I didn't find fascinating. And what's worse, it was very much like the original, but taken to another level, in which made me think most of the movie has lost it's flavor to make people laugh. If you want laughs, fly with Otto and Kareem Abdul-Jabaar (or Roger Murdoch), in the original.
