Hello David.A.Smith , my name is also David and I am a 62year old brush Signwriter in New Zealand. Your amazing skill , talent and endless patience has me in absolute AWE . I watched this video clip in stunned silence not wanting it to end but in anticipation of seeing the finished work of art. You are at the absolute pinnacle of the Sign industry. I gladly take my hat of to you 🎩 👍👍👍
My God, this sign is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen! Watching David create this masterpiece left me in awe, his steady hands and brilliant mind puts him in a league of his own. Thank you so much David and Danny for bringing this amazing film to light!
I am speechless.... 5 years!? I fully believe that. This is a masterpiece! When you moved the Glass into the frame I was so anxious watching it, but knowing how long this took to make I am even more anxious. What a craft! What craftsmanship! I am so honored I got to watch this. And I envy every last craftsman on earth that still gets to make beautifull pieces like this❤
I can't really explain why but I'm fighting back tears after watching this. Dave creates such incredibly beautiful glass artwork, I am so envious of his skill and craftsmanship. Another great film too. Obviously I'm now a haircut at L&B just so I can get to see the piece up close!
Been in the sign business for 32 years and I have only seen this type of work done a few times I can tell you it's like looking back in time when things were made to be beautiful even the smallest most insignificant items were made to be beautiful. I started hand lettering 3 decades ago and haven't picked up a brush in maybe 20 years a few days ago I got an order for a hand done sign and I can't wait to put paint to brush.
What a beautiful documentary...….Absolutely perfectly composed from the narration right down to the music and the brief ASMR moments in-between...…this truly captures the art and passion with which David crafted this beautiful piece.
My god. I’ve just witnessed a true artisan and craftsman create something utterly extraordinary. I was almost tearful as it was lifted into place on the wall, I really felt the countless hours of impossibly intricate work coming to fruition. A glorious, glorious piece of work and a wonderfully made film documenting it.
I’ve just spent 4 days with Dave on his course. An amazing man with such great skills. I’m going to buy the online course too. Best 4 days of my life. Thanks Dave
This video and the item prodeced are stunning! I must note that the wood lathe process depicted was period-accurate, including the absence of safety glasses for the craftsman.
I will say one thing about gilded signs and that is that when they are done correctly and with skill they are very beautiful works of art. I have been wondering if these techniques could be done using sheets of transparent aluminum.
Amazing! Congratulations with this beautiful documentary. This is worth watching every second and it is a delight to see all the craftsmanship involved from both of you. Thank you.
What I wouldn't do to just spend a day watching you work your incredible artistic magic. This is a breath-taking art form that I fear may vanish without craftsman like yourself and a small handful who refuse to let this unique skill slip into the past forever. You are truly a master craftsman and artistic genius, it's an honour to have had a mere glimpse into your world and the pain-staking process it takes to create your masterpieces. Please keep creating and passing on this knowledge to the next generation. I'm embarrassed to say that I got misty-eyed witnessing this awe-inspiring piece of timeless art come to life, which echoes the unparalleled elegance, class and opulence of a distant, bygone Golden Age era which I find myself often longing for and even mourning, as if I had actually lived to see the splendours with my own eyes. A time when the standards were so much higher and such artistic beauty was almost common place, as opposed to a breath-taking rarity in a classless, disposable, fast food world that has lost so much of its charm and artistic integrity. I think I was born at least a century or so too late. Bless you and all you do!! Warmest wishes, LC
That was so beautifully done. The documentary & filmmaking was excellent. Nicely paced and interestingly shot. But, that gilded mirror piece is just astounding. Such intricacy. I had to keep stopping the video to take it in. Every part of it is exquisite. I am a Signwriter - hand letterer of old. So I know what I'm looking at. We did a couple of gold leaf mirrors in trade school, back in the day. I'd love to re-learn some of those techniques. A thing of beauty forever.
A most wonderful & tasteful creation showcasing an exquisite work of art by the best in the business, & how lucky for Ludlow & Blunt to even find & engage David A. Smith..& his fellow artistes .Thankyou for a lovely film..
Well done Dave A.Smith you nailed it as you would say. Devoted 5 years to make a masterpiece that is one of a kind. You should be very proud of what you have done. I know when one of these days I will go see this in person and stare at it. Great video by all who made this possible, Danny Cooke.

My most humble respect to you Sir Mr David A Smith ....your name itself is a legendary and synonymous to the work and art you create . I've never seen anything like this , we have glass etching and metal etching back here in Bangalore , India, but this type of work and craftsmanship needs recognition, sir I hope you have an apprentice who is as dedicated as you , only hope I had a chance to learn this craft under you ...I would drop anything and everything to be at your disposal . Thank you very much Sir for sharing this video , you are a rare Gem .

This should be on display next to the mask of Tutankhamun.

As an artist, I would value this piece at a quarter of a million pounds sterling. As an artist, I bet David didn’t even get paid half that.
