I just watched this for the first time, simply incredible. Thank you Dave not only for this but the gift of your craft to the world. The most inspiring thing I have watched in a very long time.
that's why... the art requires patience, dedication, thinking of a motive, layout a good design, very good taste, knowledge of technique n' history, etc. ; this days ''artists'' want fame and money fast, so, gallerists invented all that 🐂💩 of 'modern' and their friends are involved; like in 90's a so called koons become the king of 🐂💩 art and became millionaire, then others imitate him and gallerists found a $$ formula, using it till this days, then people thinks "art" is 'anythinhg' that any idiot does, from 💩 in a can, a stone in an aquarium, popsicle sticks or a banana with ducktape on a wall (that ironically was a joke but people took it seriously)
That moment of realisation when you see a whole window suspended above a bright cutting wheel and if you get one bit wrong , it's back to square one, just breathtaking. Mind officially blown.
We pulled up to the TV to enjoy with popcorn and some licorice and enjoy we did......felt like we took the trip to your studio and New York City with you. Kudo's to you and Danny for all the compliments and well earned praise.
All I can say is thank you for sharing with us an insight into your world, its truly a great experience in the turbulent times we are living, and gives us a pause for reflection.
I am stunned, astonished and emotionally overwhelmed by your skills. A true, in every sense of the words MASTER CRAFTSMAN. Thank you for your enthusiasm and inspiration you pass on to any viewer of this documentry or spectator to your work and teachings.
Impressed would be a huge understatement. Breathtaking is closer. Simply "wow" still falls short. To think this was once common is astonishing and honestly this process and artistry makes watercolour painting seem easy....
It's not often I feel humbled by watching TH-cam but this is an exception. The process and mastery of these timeless techniques are like seeing through a window into the past. Thank you, David, for sharing your magnificent work.
This film is just beautiful. Love this style films of master makers at their art with the incredible cinematography, sounds and music. The art of this style sign making has always enthralled me. Wish I had taken up this beautiful craftsmanship.
Why am i crying?! So glad this was turned into a film for the world to see. Absolutely breathtaking. Thank you for sharing your art and inspiring us all
"Huge fan" is inadequate. I can't imagine being able to that for a living. They are all masterpieces that will be in a museum somewhere. Having said that, did you just make the first documentary filmed entirely in slow motion?
Mark. I appreciate this. Get the Popcorn in mate!!! Thank you for the inspiration and help over the years, you are a special friend and both you and Rose are such amazing designers and artists sharing your skills to many people. Without you and the rest of the talented Letterheads around the world I would not have been able to create these panels of Gold. Raising a glass to Rick Glawson tonight. Enjoy the film. Thank you.
I’ve just been sent here by Dom. What a beautiful half hour watching sublime perfection. Thank you for sharing your journey with this truly magnificent work!
Wow. Your video with Dom Chinea brought me here and I am so glad it did. While I did not like the style of the video and I found the finished piece over fussy, I am amazed by you as an artist and by the skills you have mastered. I was never aware of the work that went into that glass you see in some Victorian pubs and what skill and expertise are required. Thank you for opening my eyes to it, you are clearly a master artist and craftsman.
Crikey Dave!! Following the making of this piece was the sole reason I kept my Instagram account, and seeing all your hard work brought together in this video is amazing. It's truly the best piece of reverse glass art ever made 🙌
Until I saw Dom Chinea’s channel I had no idea about the masterful work needed to create such beautiful artwork. David, this video had me absolutely lost for words. There are not enough superlatives available to describe such wonderful work. Your creation is breathtaking and inspiration. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the background and demonstrating some of the process you undertook to achieve this outstanding work of art. Stan.
Hello Dave, I was led to this video by watching Doms visit to your workshop. There are no words that can express the emotion I felt seeing this incredible work of art being created. The hours of blood, sweat and tears that went into this stunning piece, knowing that just one slip could undo everything, are almost beyond my comprehension. To witness this level of skill and passion is humbling. You sir are a true artisan and master of your craft and I sincerely thank you for sharing it with us.
I was a Neon sign Maker in Seattle for almost 20 years, I have made/refurbished some iconic signs in the Seattle Landscape. Pike's Place Market, The Rainier R, Pink Elephant Car Wash"s and most signs at Mariners/Seahawks stadium to name a few. David Smith is my absolute favorite artist in the industry. I now own a small florist business in Spokane Wa. and my dream is to one day be able to afford a sign by him. I can't wait to watch this video.
I know that I am going to come back and watch this, time and time again. I also know that I will see something different, each and every time that I watch it.... David A Smith is an Expert Craftsman who deserves all of the accolades!
I'm a fine art illustrator working primarily in pen & ink for over 50 years now, and it is so wonderful to see these tried and true methods still being employed today. Your skill, craftsmanship, and talent are unmatched. Thank you for filming this and sharing it with us. ❤
Such passion and dedication. I have followed this project from the start and was excited to see it completed. This film is amazing and to see the credits....to see SCOTT MARTIN'S name mentioned who was a good friend of mine brought a tear to my eye. I would stop in his shop and ask him to help me with the reverse glad gilding. He kept on trying to tell me I didn't need his help, I was fine on my own. I finally signed up for one of his work shops, taking the last spot available. Sadly though, it didn't happen before his passing. He actually once told me to just give you (David) a call and that you's chat with me. I replied "no way could I ever just randomly call a guy like that". Who knows, maybe one day I'll jump on a plane and make it to one of your workshops David. I just adore your work and bring your name and work up often when talking with fellow sign painters and artists.
Hola saludos desde México me gusta mucho este tipo de trabajo y la verdad me gustaría conocer más de este trabajo para poder realizar un trabajo que tengo en proyecto para mí abuelito muchas felicidades y admiro su trabajo es una excelente obra de arte
Watched this at Plymouth uni and don't mind admitting I was quite choked up by the level of skill on show here. Amazing work and great story telling. Well done everyone involved. Supurb.
A truly stunning piece of art. I'm in awe at the craftmanship and passion you've put in to this piece. You've inspired me to not just pick up my brushes and pencils again, but shown me that I shouldn't rush my art, which I tend to do. You deserve the award you received! It was lovely to meet you and your family yesterday, the most inquisitive, genuine family I met all day :)
Mark. Thank you so much! We loved chatting with you, so interesting. I really appreciate you leaving this comment. If ever you are in Torquay pop in for a cuppa!! all the best mate.
You Sir Dave are a true artisan watching this video was extremely emotional so much talent and attention to deal was astounding. Well Done your Aussie Sheila Jen
So incredibly special! I'm so grateful you documented the whole process and shared it with us. A true masterpiece and master craftsman. Phenomenal work, thank you David!
Well done David A. Smith you nailed it as you would say. Devoted 5 years to make a masterpiece that is one of a kind. You should be very proud of what you have done. When I ever get back to New York that will be on my list to see this artwork in person. Thanks to all who made this possible for David A. Smith.
Gentslman, I’m lacking the vocabulary appropriate for what I just saw with this piece and showing. Emotional…. I wish I would have met you many years ago. I hope I get to see you next year in your new shop. With Profound Respect and Gratitude…Thank You!
Dave you honor my hometown and grace it with your Artwork. Brooklyn NY has a long and proud history of glass workers and Artist, now mostly gone. Cheers, a few of us are still around. Wishing you continued good health & continued success !
Just got a chance to watch the film. What a wonderful thing you e made with your life. So special that you share it with us and I’m so thankful to be a part of it. It made me cry to be perfectly honest. I’m super thankful for your friendship and all that I’ve learned from you Dave. Thank you so much for everything and for being such a kind person.
I had the privilege of seeing this work of art in the flesh just before it was shipped to new york and to this day I will never forget the sheer joy of seeing something so incredibly beautiful. Even now after watching this film I’m instantly transported back to that moment of seeing it again for the first time and that feeling of wonder and how lucky I felt being able to be so close to something so beautiful. Being able to bring together timeless crafts with modern techniques is a craft in its own right and one Dave has made his own. I’ve been lucky enough to see Dave’s work evolve over the years from seeing a friends bedroom wall change from magnolia wood chip to a floor to ceiling copy of meatloaf’s ‘Bat out of hell’ album cover when Dave was 15 years old to crafting signs for pubs and hotels to this one of a kind masterpiece with a nod to the craftsmen that have come before him. He’s always looking for inspiration from the past to create something beautiful for the future, I can’t wait to see what he’s going to come up with next? He’s also got a great collection of guitars and still can’t play a note! 🎸 😁 Well done Davey boy 👏🏼
Incredible work by Dave... He is such a nice decent bloke! I thoroughly enjoyed being on one of his courses... I learnt so much and made great friends! 😎
I’m amazed by your work and the beautiful things you make! Do you have tips voor artists who also want to start in the sign painting business? It would by a honor to make this kind of art
Your design is amazing and only topped by your attention to detail. Watching you wield that large panel in front of those grinding wheels -- well, it would scare the crap out of me worried I'd ruin all the other work I had already completed. Patience beyond all measure, nerves of steel.
Simply Amazing - So disappointed that I missed the official launch. A wonderful, inspiring, and somewhat emotional film beautifully captured by Danny that just gives you goosebumps, coupled with Dave’s narration -his voice captures us like a David Attenborough of the Glass art kingdom. Dave you for taking us on this wonderful journey of the Ludlow and Blunt project- it will go down in history. Congratulations my friend. You are Legend man 🙌
I very much appreciate this from you James. It was a fun project to create and work alongside a client that recognises how important it is to keep these crafts alive. Its one part of the process for me that I love the most and that is teaching people how to create these pieces of wall jewellery. Thank you James for this lovely comment about me and my work.
I have no words to describe what I've just witnessed. All these different techniques, executed to perfection. What a stunning beauty! Thank you for sharing this. Thanks!

Adding to that, you made the most of your artistic talents/natural ability.
