I'm totally with Joby on "Learn the hard way" it's the only way skills like his (and yours) are developed to the standard where you make it look easy. No wonder people just want to watch master craftsmen at work. That's why I subscribe to your channel
The little stick he uses to prop his hand is genius. It makes so much sense, and it's a clever way to do it. I learned the importance of supporting my hands when learning to weld.
Lol it simply translates to "Paint" stick in german, as in painting not the paint itself@@philelliott5327 wikipedia: "...a stick with a soft leather or padded head used by painters to support the working hand with a paintbrush or pen. The word derives from the German and Dutch Malstock or maalstok 'painter's stick', from malen 'to paint'."
Thank you for bringing Joby Carter to more People's attention Dom, I was very disappointed last year on the fair's last full visit to Basingstoke to learn that they were winding up the business, but I feel that not only is it the right time for Joby due to his own reasons, but financially, with transport and running costs, they really have dodged a very large bullet! Having been living in Cornwall when the Fairground museum just over the border folded, and having chatted to some of the Anderton and Rowlands people over the years at Trevithick day etc, we really may have seen then of an era.
Perfect! Two craftsmen; masters of their art working together. I mentioned before that I discovered you when searching the Porsche 356 restoration and was initially disappointed as you detoured to the Ranalah project, and then your Mom's VW with John...But by then I was hooked. Take us anywhere you like and we are lucky to be able to join you along the way. All the best from the other side of the Atlantic.
Absolutely the best video seen in ages. What a Master Joby is. Don't decry your own efforts here too. Can't wait to see where you go with this in the end Dom. Fantastic work, both of you.
That was fantastic! I never thought about sign writing until I tuned into your channel. Now, it's something I'm really keen to dabble in. As a blacksmith, good signage would come in tremendously handy if I ever do some fairs and the like, but just having it around the shop adds a ton of character that I'm currently without. Thanks for another great episode!
Thank you for introducing us to Jody. Someone who has a knowledge of sign writing and a passion for passing it on. I really like watching and listening to true crafts people who know their craft and are also able to communicate it at a basic level to laymen.Well worth watching.
Bloody brilliant Dom ! You have a gift for finding people of the same ilk as yourself. Down to earth but so willing to share their skills . I found in my job, as a panelbeater/ painter, that the painters were very reluctant to share their skills . In my 53 years of fabricating, welding and painting , l'm always very keen to share my knowledge and skills and in fact in recent weeks whilst attending classic car shows a good number have come up to me thanking me for passing on my knowledge . For me, like Jobe , it is vital that our skills snould be passed down . In recent weeks l've been fabricating and welding in repairs for a client with his M.G, Magnette . He was an engineer but had no fabrication skills . In the few weeks l've been with him he has become very adept in picking up my skills . I get so much satisfaction from passing on my knowledge and l know l could pick up Jobe 's skills very quickly ,.....Dom ,thankyou ! And Jobe , we share the same ethics . .....Thankyou !
As always , a fabulous video Dom. It doesnt matter who you are working with or learning from you really bring out the very best from people. Mind you it helps when you find such amazing characters in the first place. Joby is such a talent but thank you for introducing me to the music of Ashley Harding. You always find such great music for your videos but his really is stand out!!
My Junior High art instructor taught me this art in 1965 and it served as a source of income and relaxation for decades. I thought I was the end of an era when I stopped doing sign painting in the early 2000s. Computers and stick-on vinyl seemed everywhere. I am pleased to know that their are still craftspeople carrying on the skill, even if you are 6,000 miles away! Some of my favorite days were spent painting roses on floral delivery vans. Good on you, I wish I had the means to be a patron but I love your channel.
Yet another time I wish I was back in Europe, where places and people like this still exist to this very day. You really made my day, and I wish for the day when I can afford to come and pay a visit. Thanks again from a sweltering hot, tired guy in Florida.
Brilliant, as a reader of Old Glory since it's start in the early 80's I have been aware of Carters Fair and lately of Joby Carter, I think this is something for my retirement. Fantasic video Dom, thank you.
This Ranalah looks insane, lads! My Granddad, Lewis F. Wright, once used to be a popular signwriter around Kent and all over London... even more amazing that he was so good at it despite being extremely dyslexic. If I was wearing a hat, I'd doff it to the pair of you. Amazing work. x
Loved that one Dom. Great sign writing. Can't wait to see it next week. By the way we all know that your going to make the triangle flag with the R in it so after Goodwood get it made please. Have a great Goodwood.
What a fascinating video watching a true craftsman at his work. The Ranalagh looks amazing. They certainly wouldn't have thought of painting them so vibrantly back in the day...😁
Absolutely brilliant Dom, and I assume Dan behind the camera, excellently made video. Love Joby, bought his book when it came out, hopefully will be able to do his course in future! 🎉
Lovely film with you both sharing your passions. Joby is a great Signwriter and his passion to keep it all alive is important to him and his many friends. One of the best in the industry.
Another excellent video Dom. Visually interesting; good dialogue and an intelligent selection of backing music. Not to mention the excellent skills. Keep doing this. 😊😊❤🎉
Think the Pandemic was the reset button loads of people needed, it changed so many people's outlook on life, especially taking time out to follow a passion. Watching two master craftsman together was absolutely captivating and relaxing, would love to have at least a tenth of there talent. 👍
Excellent video Dom. Shows people what a sign written article looks like when compared to stick-on. The trouble was I did find it upsetting at times being as it was what my late father did. He was a signwriter for over 40 years. He did shop fronts, vans, trucks, boards, gold leafing and displays much like what you did in the video.
Thank you so much for doing this video; it's an absolute treat! I really want to do Joby's course some day soon and it's a delight to watch him work. As somebody who is trying to learn signwriting I can attest that it is really hard to do such incredible work as this. Thanks! 🙏
I'm so pleased to see that you had someone do the camera this time. You're really ramping up the production values. Great video about how to apply calligraphy and ameliorate the ameliorated.
Wonderful stuff, it looks really good. I also find it interesting to hear some of the institutional knowledge being passed on - I didn't even consider paint pooling if you were to mask off areas yet, as soon as both of you were talking about that, it made perfect sense.
Hi Dom great video, nice to see joby again, i managed to join him for one of his classes which i totally recommend to any one wanting to have a go at sign writing. So good to see you both working together. Finnished article looks brilliant mate. Best regards uncle Franko ❤️
Ranelah got tango’d, love sign writing, I used to watch a guy called Ron who did all of Cadman plant hire, when I worked there when It was a kid, just out of school in the late 70’s.
One of those rare absorbing videos where you don't want it to end, but also you are eager to see the ending and the final reveal.
I love to watch Dominic and Tally Ho back to back as a feel good factor if I need a mood lifter.
Brilliant. Loved it. Teasing us with baby Ranalahs too! Want one…
I'm totally with Joby on "Learn the hard way" it's the only way skills like his (and yours) are developed to the standard where you make it look easy. No wonder people just want to watch master craftsmen at work. That's why I subscribe to your channel
Hats off to Dan too for really excellent camerawork and editing, bravo Gents👏👏🎩
Thank you!! Yes a huge thank you to Dan for making a great video
The little stick he uses to prop his hand is genius. It makes so much sense, and it's a clever way to do it. I learned the importance of supporting my hands when learning to weld.
It's called a Mahl stick. Not sure why it's called that, I just remember a signwriter telling me.
Lol it simply translates to "Paint" stick in german, as in painting not the paint itself@@philelliott5327

Two craftsmen who are masters working together to create works of art. Thanks for sharing this one Dom.

As an American , I had the say something British...Jolly good show!
I once saw a TH-cam show featuring Joby and his Mom. Was glad to hear that he still does projects with her. Dom, great video! Thanks.

Always fascinating watching a quality sign writer at work.

I’ve always had great interest in sign painters, I use to work at a place where we had all our signs done by hand. True craftsmanship
