  • The Shafer Switchbacks are a series of narrow, winding switchbacks that descend from the top of a mesa to the valley floor 800' below in Canyonlands National Park Island in the Sky district. This trail is fairly well maintained and passenger cars could do the switchbacks in good weather with no problems, but the rest of the trail at the bottom requires higher clearance and possibly 4WD.
This is part one of a two part video series. This first part is the Shafer Switchbacks. The second part shows the rest of the Shafer Trail, past Thelma and Louise Point, to the Potash Road in Moab. You can see part 2 here:

The parts of this video that look like drone footage were filmed with a 360 degree camera mounted on a 106" long selfie pole. The camera and pole used were:

    Outstanding video!
I've come down the Shafer Trail 3X and I've watched countless videos on it cuz I'd like to do it again on an electric mountain bike.
This is the best video yet of the Shafer Trail
    4 out of 4 stars
    Great Job!

This is so cool. I have always looked down from the top and wondered where this road goes. Thank you for this awesome Video! My wife and I just bought our first JLU for our 30th Wedding Anniversary for this exact reason. Thanks again!

Did this road last week. Not the most technical but the pucker factor is through the roof. Definitively gotta watch what you're doing down the switchbacks. Amazing drive and worth it for the views.

Just did the trail (august 5 2022) in a rental Honda Pilot . Stopped at the viewpoint , jeep is parked there in video, and asked if she was sure she wanted to go on. Yes I am ok and then proceed to scream most of the way down . Was a bit iffy in parts when we were making our way out to the potash road. doing this trail and the Burr trail were the highlights of our trip from the UK

In August 2019, we did this accidentally on purpose in a Kia Sportage rental while on holiday from the UK. I wanted to get a photo of Dead Horse Bend from lower down than the official viewpoint. Asked for directions which were simply " Go back on the road, you'll see a turn on your left and that's where you need to go"..... One hour later of me screaming and praying we didn't snap an axle, we got to the bottom. It scared the life out of me but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

20 years ago, my dad and I came at this from below. Round a curve, the Canyon ends a few hundred yards away. He asks "where does the road go?" I just point and say "up there". 😝

I have looked down from above many times. One scary road for people scared of heights. I would hate to be the first guy to scrape this out of the cliffs with explosives and graders etc. Seems like theres a river down there to raft in. Colorado, maybe Green. I forgot.

We did drive down the Shafer Trail switchbacks. Aren't the use of drones illegal in a national park?
