    The Highs gas station has a cow as their mascot because at one time it was one of Maryland's local dairy store chains. They had their own milk and ice cream brands along with lots of convenience items too, sort of a precursor to 7-11. Not many left now. The "Beer & Wine" place across the street used to be Elmo's Dinner. Great breakfast and lunch spot and good root beer floats. The Boring Fire Dept has been replaced and is no longer used...consolidated with another nearby department in a differernt location.

      I miss Elmo's. All the old guys used to hang out there for breakfast. I would grab a sandwich there sometimes on my way to work.

    As a longtime resident of greater metropolitan Boring whose roots go back several generations, I have seen the town has slowly lose its identity. The Post office is still there, but only open 2 hours a day. The fire department was consolidated with Arcadia a couple years ago, and the building and surrounding land is now owned by a construction company. A new firehouse just opened just up the road about a mile north of the Highs you gassed up at, hopefully they will revive the tradition of the Bull Roasts and Oyster Suppers that the old Boring Fire department used to hold. The Post office used to be part of an old general store that operated until the early 1990s, when its elderly owner passed away. Arcadia is another quaint little town just up the rail line that still has a full time post office. The combined Boring and Arcadia fire departments, now known as the Upperco Volunteer Fire department has a fair grounds at Arcadia that hosts things like Bluegrass music festivals, hamfests, demolition derbies, and 2 antique farm equipment shows every year, along with other events. The biggest event of the year is the 4 day Maryland Steam historical Society's annual Steam Engine and Tractor show, which is held normally the third weekend of September and attracts thousands of people to see the old antique farm equipment, including old steam tractors and stationary engines put through their paces. Boring used to have a smaller show in June, but it petered out about 20 years ago.
    In my grandparent's time the train stopped in both villages, my grandmother took the train into Baltimore as a teenager to work in a defense plant during World War 1. My grandmother also helped out with those "Pot Luck" dinners well into her 80's. My dad was a volunteer fireman from the late 1940's into the mid 1950's, and my grandparents had a small dairy farm on land visible from the post office. About a year before Grandma went into a nursing home at the age of 91, one of the local TV stations did a piece on Boring and gave her an interview. Nice job on the video, I wanted to provide a little more history on the area.

    I wouldn't have expected to see such a large Bamboo "forest" in MD, nice surprise. I've only experienced MD on the hectic highway system - definitely enjoyed your calm, peaceful filming of this area. Your backroad videos are by far my most favorite - what you show and how you film it with a mix of telling about the area and simply allowing for the sound experience of the scenery have such a calming effect on me. Thanks for another good video! Can't wait to see where your travels lead you as you make your way home.

    I hate to tell you but that "old school beer and wine shop" that you pointed out is actually relatively new. The road was never that wide, the parking lot was in the front and that was Elmo's which was a diner. It's specifically served breakfast and lunch. I ate there every day for seven years.

    The area where I was born (York, Pa) and, for the most part, raised (Darlington, MD). I had no idea as a child how small town it was because our area always celebrated all the holidays and had great parades. Education was stressed so the schools played an important role in our development. I roamed the woods and fields all by myself. Just the landscape makes it interesting to me…not boring (except Boring, Maryland).

    • @dianewilliams9729
      @dianewilliams9729 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NeoTemplar This video had me recalling those days. For a little girl on her own for many hours, I guess it was ideal. I roamed the country roads and, if I got hungry in the summer, blackberries and blueberries were along most banks. The heat of the sun would cause tar bubbles on the roads and I loved popping them with my toes. The trees had these huge, strong vines that permitted hours of fun swinging until they finally broke. Beautiful country actually.

    Good Morning/ Afternoon/ Evening Mr Woo! I was literally laughing out loud when you were describing all the “boring” places. I was so intrigued by this I had to look up the origin of the name. The town Boring was named after a post man named David Boring. The railroad company asked the town, which at the time was named “Fairview” to change it’s name because there were multiple “Fairviews” along their line. Thus they decided on Boring. Glad you are taking the time to enjoy yourself. I think these videos are just as entertaining as the Disney ones :)

    I totally and completely feel you brother! There is peace in being alone, getting lost, no destination, and exploring random corners of the world, while removing yourself from the population. I also legit find beauty and interest in the forgotten unremarkable places in this world. A forgotten rusting building or an overgrown homestead. They have a story to tell by someone and you can feel the place’s vibe if you stop to feel it. And like you, I love seeing places of interest, attractions, exciting things, etc. But I also find it very soothing, relaxing, and restorative in finding little unknown corners of the world where no one would think to find you. Like walking into that bamboo forest or walking that little riverbank. That’s stuff I love to do and wish I had the time and freedom to do it. But I lead a different life and so I sincerely appreciate you filming stuff like this because I pretend I’m there with you and live vicariously through your videos and get a little taste of those feelings I mention above. Definitely could hang with you. We have the same feelings and interests towards visiting places. You da man Woo. 🤘🏻

    Great video Adam I enjoy man when you take time away and travel through small towns especially one named Boring Md all the years I once live in Md never once did I know there was a town named that lol. That is really cool you found it though and videoed some of it.

    Happy Easter, Mr. the Woo. I love these small town videos and you got me excited for thinking all of next week will be similar videos. Not to give you any ideas, but there's another Boring south of you...just sayin :)
