This is probably the best analysis of an accident (mountain biking, motorcycling, or flying) I have ever seen. All accidents have a "magic chain" or "Swiss cheese alignment" of elements leading to an unfavorable outcome, but the overwhelming majority of the ones I've studied have a big mental component: We get in a hurry. We let someone talk us into something. We yield to pressure, etc. etc. We're all susceptible. Hope you've healed up well and are back on the trails. Thanks for helping makes us all a little safer.

I’ve seen too many severe injuries where people helping person who crashed aren’t taking action quick enough and weren’t doing something quite right. He knew right away to call for help, and the correct actions to prevent you from getting more hurt while help was on the way.

Holy shit Yuka, that was absolutely insane. Seeing you overshoot that stepup from Eric his angle looked so scary, can't imagine how he must have felt. Good reminder to never let emotions take over the bike, especially with features where the consequences can be so big! No clue how you managed to stay so calm in such a scary situation but kudos. I think i somehow freaked out more on this side of the screen while hearing the crashing noises then you did after it just happend.
Glad you are still (mostly) in one piece and i wish you a full and quick recovery, i'm sure you'll be boaring down mountains again soon enough! Last but not least, so much respect for the rescue team, truly awesome work they do!

Having been through this twice now with Cory, I can definitely feel the intensity of this. Get well soon, Yuka. It'll feel like it takes forever to heal and you'll have moments of some negative intrusive thoughts, but just know that it'll pass. Cory's stuck to the ground for now as well. She hasn't fully recovered from her torn shoulder tendons from last year and she just recently detached her collarbone on that same shoulder. Needless to say, no big jumps or drops for a while. At least she's back to pedaling around on flatter trails. With some aggressive PT, we're hoping she can enjoy a trip to Windrock by February. Best wishes to you two.

hate to say it, but it was coming from far away. don't want to be a dick, but you need to get good coaching lessons, as you lack some basic proper technique to start with. I mean... you can't do a proper bunnyhop + pumping - this basically closes lots of the gates for technical jumps
in some spots you weren't able to clear the jumps only because of that. Also, proper technique makes you more comfortable and safe.
I need more/less speed can't be an answer for everything. You can clearly see some features here are hard for you even not mentioning they are not that big at all.
best wishes to you both and have a speedy recovery :)
P.S.: protection can't also be an answer for everything, you will just get to bigger jumps with poor technique and protection might not save you there.

Glad you're alright, crashing is the worst, and injury sucks. Anyone with a bad back from an injury knows exactly what I mean. There might not be a worse thing to have wrong with you from a day to day perspective. From someone who had a bad work accident that resulted in a few broken vertebrae, herniated disc, brain injury, and other broken bones... ending in disability. It's what you do after that matters. You'll heal up, learn, and be better than ever once you get past your mental blocks. The crash doesn't define you it''s the finish! It's amazing the feeling of coming back from something like this.. trust me on that!

Your attitude and calm are impressive. Most of us have gone through these and they suck for a long time. Get back too it when you're ready.

Regarding glasses, as some one who has horrible eye sight and is completely blind without glasses. This was a huge issue for me, but with the proliferation of goggle inserts such as these ones made by sportrx, this issue has been completely eliminated 6-7 years ago. I know some people might prefer to not wear goggles, but it seems for us the four eye crowd, a pair of goggles with adapters is the best solution for full face helmet use.
I use Oakley and Oakley’s own polycarbonate prescriptions lenses for everyday riding with my half face helmets.
These solutions also eliminates the small but real danger of regular glasses breaking on crashes and causing secondary damage to our eyes.
    I hope this is helpful.

Ooff. Im so glad it wasn't any worse. In all honesty I had a very emotional reaction hearing the sounds immediately post crash. Full on tears. I've stupidly broken two bones during two separate crashes and know the sound too well. Sending all the healing energy I can muster!

Glad to see you were better than expected it was scary to watch and very intense as though I could feel your pain. Hope you are healing quickly and continue to ride safe. And shout out to all the emergency workers for help and quick response.

Dang. You launched that. I'm glad you're not more broken. That was gnarly. Good thing you weren't riding solo. Good lesson here: ride with a buddy. You're not visible from the trail so that could be way worse. Thanks for breaking this down for us. Good reminders all around.

I really didn’t want to watch this video I didn’t want to see you get hurt but I appreciate you posting it and with proper context. I think the biggest take away is we shouldn’t allow our emotions to override our judgment but unfortunately it’s something we all deal with it’s what makes us human and capable of making mistakes. I hope you heal well and feel better soon.

Hope you are well. I just broke my clavicle, broke a rib, and punctured a lung riding Beech Mt bike trails in NC. I’m healing a week later but very painful. So thankful for Mountain Patrol Medics. I am grateful as well. Could have been so much worse.
