I bought a 2003 saab 9-5 wagon from a guy back in February. It looks like he put an aftermarket black and grey badge that has chipped paint that is almost completely gone. I ordered an original emblem that arrives this Thursday. Im so excited as this is my first car, and i want to make it look new again 😊. Thanks for the informational video!
I replaced my bonnet badge 2 years ago and it needs doing again. I had a thought that the headlight restoration technique, finishing with UV resistant clearcoat, should work on these degraded badges. Not tried it yet, and spraying a new badge before fitting makes excellent sense.
Actually, in my experience (16 years at a Saab dealership), I changed hundreds of badges, and truthfully, although the new replacement OE badges look great......the decal part often peals off in a few short years. Especially the front one which faces the wind and weather. I think the parts quality of the replacement OE badges dropped in the later years. (and way over-priced) Funny experience was a customer who thought someone had stolen the badge, but actually the badge was still there and the colored decal part had pealed off.
Saab was giving away free badges about 2 years ago to help everyone re-badge their cars. I got 2 in the mail and I live in the U.S. It was that Original Club that your were taking about Trionic.
Curious results.... I bought a cheap Badge from Portugal / Ebay and 12 yrs later it still looked good. Yet a Genuine Saab badge.. Which did look better made/had a slightly better image.. Lived a whole year before the blue began to flake off. Just saying
Done this recently on my Saab 93 . Got black badges front and rear instead of blue. Black wheel centre caps too . Hope the badges last the distance , wouldn't want to be changing them too often. Good video by the way, I used strong nylon thread.
It seems like the worst thing for these badges (no matter OE or not) is stuff used in winter for road cleaning. Just one trip through Poland made mine look like that. Then I used some gel type stickers - still holds after 2 years.
@@TrionicSeven I live in Minnesota USA and salt doesn't really affect mine. Trust me with our winters they use a lot. But thanks for the handy floss method to get the emblem off! Other people show them practically prying them off with screwdrivers risking scratches.
Greetings from south Spain!!! Nice work taking off thenold one. Here is 40°C outside but i'll try it when the Saab get "cool" . I have the China ones, original ones have lost the decal, last year was the trunk one.. How is that badge right now?? Thanksss!!!
Awesome video man! I have to do this on my 9-3 II for the front and back.. The originale on the trunk is going bad on a lot off 9-3´s. Maybe it is the weather here in Norway, with the salt?
Thanks! The Saab badges generally go bad after a number of years and need to be replaced. Check the photos from my FAQ thread last year and you'll see how the factory badges looked after 13 years: forum.saabturboclub.com/showthread.php/135284-FAQ-Byta-Saab-emblem-utan-att-repa-lacken
But wait... The original badges are often completely thrashed on used Saabs. The new one you show here looks great, but the longevity perhaps isn't that great with these ones, either?
Saab does not make stickers. That means that your shop is selling cheap eBay stickers and putting them on your Saab. IMO that is not acceptable as the result inevitably becomes the one I show in the video.
Thank you for posting. I put gel inserts (from Spain) on my '03 convertible 7 years ago & they still look good. They were half the price of genuine Saab parts. I also have a 2007 9-5, and its badges look OK after 9 years. Foggy, but not de-laminating like the 9-3 did. Maybe in '03 they got the badges from China?
I paid £8.99 for an after-market one and the emblem was so far out of line with the lugs I got my money back and ordered an OE one instead. Next item to buy? Dental floss. Great vid.
Just like bad post 2002 plastic headlights, these Chinese badges can be polished to be clear again. (with toothpaste etc etc) A genuine badge cost me 10 times as much once and it delaminated after only a couple of years leaving only a blank chrome disc. Genuine badges are rubbish too.
I had to do this with my trunk lid badge a month ago, and I started with the cheap one, only to find something even worse than cosmetic issues: the mounting points were different, almost as if it was meant for a 9-3. Pony up for the genuine stuff, people, it's not that much more.
i think several of us have fallen for the aftermarket badgem who is to know when you buy one ?? having said that if when the badge goes matt you can polish a shine back onto the top surface of it it using G3 polishing compound or T 'cut, its SUNLIGHT that affects the top finish on the aftermarket badge, and does the damage to it . i have compound polished my after market one a couple of times and the shiny finish will come back, unfortunately again the red paint in the Grffon's head turns PINK,! on the copy ones !!, again thats sunlight and the colouring medium that was used on the repro badge i
I have a 2004 9-5 and need to change the badge on my trunk. Should the process be done the same as you've done on the hood. I also need the emblems for my rims too. What do you suggest for those?
The trunk is more difficult since you can't push from the inside. Instead you need to work more with the sawing motion and then carefully pry open with a feeler gauge or metal spatula. Protect the paint with something strong so you don't scratch it!
+Trionic Seven okay thanks I didn't know you'll reply you know how the Saab has the LED light on the dash for the alarm my car doesn't lock no more whit the key fob the LED is off and idk how to fix it
Hm...never heard of this problem before and have no idea. The locking system is, as you understand, rather complex and includes the anti-theft device and various electronics. I would ask on a Saab forum :)
After market emblems cheap? GM Saab were the ones that sucked! You see all those unrecognizable stock Saab emblems on cars still driving around?! The emblems I replaced were leaps and bounds better than the stock emblems issued on the car.
I would agree, but the rear emblem is Saab original and has been on even longer than the ebay front emblem, and that one looks amazing. Same degreasers.
I am a new owner of a 2006 Saab 9-5. Love your channel, the information is very useful to us Saab lovers :)
Thank you!
Thanks!
I am selling a 9-7x 5.3 2008
the best video of this task I have seen. Even works without any sound. Thank you for this - truly helpful
Great!

"That's what she said." (Lol)
You found it! ;)
Trionic Seven yes, after I kept rewinding it just to pause it in the correct moment, lol.
Chalks I finally found it 4:25 can't believe he said that : )
Last time I changed it I sprayed the new badge with clearcoat for extra protection before I put it on.
That's great advice, thanks!

Interesting, thanks! I'd say that the badges got better around 2006, I haven't had to replace any of this exact vintage.

Is the rear one held on the same way?

Original badges seem to last about 10 years. That cheap badge barely lasted a few months.
My local Saab shop just puts stickers on top of the emblem. Those badges will sadly eventually have the paint come off again.

On the package it said the country of origin and I think my badge it said some country in Europe.
instaBlaster.

And when the badge is off you can remove dental plaque! Win-win.
I have chinese badges since 2012 and they still look like new. Depends on which you have, I have gel badges.
I guess I'm the unlucky one.
I just fine-sanded my after-market badges and applied some clear-coat. Took me 3 minutes to do both. I'll let you know how long it will last ;)
Great tip, thanks!
So how’s it holding up 2 years later?
@@shathan123 not bad, tbh. but i'll have to redo the work soon. Another 3 minutes to spend :D
I have the same experience. Now original badges. The idea to save 5€ was a mistake. Buy cheap, buy twice. ;-)
Yep, totally agree.
Just like bad post 2002 plastic headlights, these Chinese badges can be polished to be clear again. (with toothpaste etc etc)

The badges on my wife's 2006 9-5 have held up beautifully for 10 years

Yep. I tried to find trunk badges for my 2002 9-5 wagon but it was impossible to find.
If put clearcoat on when new maybe they hold finnish?
Do you have parts for saab 2005 mod 95
I have this Saab in 9-5 wagon. Such a pretty car.
It is!
Comes off better if you warm the emblem and hood with a hair dryer.
Very good point, thanks :)
Om man köper från speedparts är det bättre?
Great video. Just replaced mine got it off with a feeler guage
Be careful to not scratch the paint 😬
when i changed my front badge i used clear coat 3 layers before i put it on. i hope it will hold for a long time.
Great idea with clearcoat, will try that next time I have to change badges.
How’s it holding up 4 years later?
@@shathan123 Still nice and clean
i have a 2007 saab 9-5 sedan with stock badges and the trunk emblem is so foggy but the hood looks new
That's weird, but good news: you only need to replace one of the emblems :)

Yeah, it seems like the top coat of the cheap clearcoat goes bad with sunlight. But the OEM badges seem to work well, esp. on cars after 2006.
Hi!
can you write please the name of the club, where you have joined

Okay, sounds great.
Thank you so much.
Where do you buy these batches? I need one for the hood and one for the back. (Saab 9-3 1,8 turbo linearCombi stationcar hirsch 2005) Thanks guys. 😄
They are available from any Saab parts distributor. :)
mines already faded where do I buy these I have a 2001 93
Check my video on how to get saab parts :)

I guess quality varies...although it should not.
Looks as if one has to have luck! :-)
Yep, it seems so!
Is e85 on a 2003 9-3ss possible?
I think so, talk to your nearest tuner :)
Hur fick du Saab Emblemet gratis? Hittar inget på Saab Originals Club
Det var en drive tidigare i år, så just nu gäller det nog inte.
That's what she said
;)
Morakniv och hammare fungerar också, for the record.
;)
Haha, ingen morakniv på min bil inte :P
Some wax no and then and the crapy one will give you bucks for Benny. The crapy one is made of vinyl. BTW greetings from Norway.
I wax the car and use paint sealer, still didn't help ;)
That surface on vinyl is created by strong decreaser in addition to a regular carwash. Så moralen er: hold avfettingsvæske vekk fra emblemene.
I would agree, but the rear emblem is Saab original and has been on even longer than the ebay front emblem, and that one looks amazing. Same degreasers.
mine chinese 3 year old badges are still like brand new
Lucky you!
good video
Great comment
20 degrees IS winter!!!
Not in real units ;)
I don't think you can get the Saab-Scania badge from Orio.
Is it gone now?
I don't think it's ever been available. The Saab badge is, but the Saab-Scania (before 2002-ish) I couldn't find.
Saab is the best car ever made!!
i but one and eBay i think is from China to let see what happens .
No harm in trying!
Thats what she said!😂😂😂
Sleeper!!
Yep!
The real deal is crap too.
Not from 2006 and onward.
That's what she said lol
