God the Master System version of this tune is just sooo pleasant to listen to. The subtle vibrato on PSG 0 adds so much by itself, and the phase effect and echoing harmony on PSG 2 is just- chef's kiss.
As a very young kid, it took me probably weeks to notice this part of the melody (all the melody tracks mixed together, plus all the game sounds and enemies attacking was probably too overwhelming for my tiny kid brain) =P But when I noticed it I fell in love with it, ESPECIALLY once I managed to make the game play the melodies in slow motion, i used to slowly insert cartridges while playing sonic, which was inside the master system's memory, in hopes of glitching the game without crashing it, after many many tries I once managed to glitch the game to play all songs in slow motion without crashing it, which made the melodies soooo melancholic... Yeah I had few games and had to find ways to explore them as much as possible and distract myself =P
I always preferred this melody over the 16-bit version. Especially the backing track on PSG1, its so beautiful sounding. Yuzo Koshiro is an absolute legend.
Man It was so convenient to put the sub-melody in the 3rd channel, as it can be lost when noise sfx is played, instead of being the bass like in Sonic 2, where the soul of the music is lost when breaking brick walls, for example.
1:05 I don't know why else it is and the part of the song that I like most about this version by Green Hill, it's a little calm but it still makes you excited! That's right, and it's tasteful work!
@@ssg-eggunner Well, not exactly. Doing that would mean losing the PSG part in the Genesis version. And yes the Genesis version uses PSG to start with.
This not only was the First Video Game I played in my Entire Life back in 1992 at 3 Years of age, but therefore the First Sonic Game also. It honestly brings back so Much emotion and memory. Pure Brilliance.
Well it's all Masato Nakamura's as it's his track but Yuzo Koshiro did the sound programming to put this in the 8-bit version while Hiroshi Kubota did the conversion from Masa's original version to the SMPS sound driver that Sonic 1 was using.
Psgs don’t wait around it’s like they are always playing the bass (psg 1) Is trying to play 2 parts cause of the high note it’s playing is just representing the psgs in the genesis song
Im figuring out how to recreate these songs in KORG Gadget (Switch), which has a PSG option in the Kamata Synthesizer gadget that sounds virtually indistinguishable from the Sega Master System/Game Gear sound, complete with an option to turn the PSG into Noise. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the Noise to sound 'just' like it does in these tracks though, but I'm sure I'll crack the secret sooner or later. I have to say though, Koshiro did NOT have his work cut out for him when he was forced to make music with the SMS! That he could get good sounding tunes out of such a shrill, whistley sound chip is a testament to his amazing music skills!
This is much closer to what the waveforms on a real SMS would be like. In fact most old consoles would have similarly "curly" waveforms. This is because whenever the voltage is being artificially held away from 0 (when there's any audible sound) it sort of "leaks" and the potential difference tries to resolve itself back to 0 at an ever slowing rate. So in the end a pulse comes out with those ramps you see in the video.
In my opinion I still enjoy the classic 8bit NES to the Master system. NES had amazing tunes like the incredible Contra and Super C tracks, Castlevania, Mario Brothers 1 2 3, and some memorable tracks from Ninja Gaiden and Metroid.
The NES' Ricoh 2A03 literally has duty cicles, a better pitch range, a triangle wave Channel and Delta PCM While Master System's SN76489 has only 1 square wave width option for the noise Channel, that pitches up the other channels at the same time, making It sound worse
I think the tracks you mentioned aren't really more impressive than something like this from a technical sound perspective. For stuff that you've got Batman Return of the Joker, or ANYTHING Tim Follin did on the system.

LOVE the echo melody from this
It’s in Sonic Advance Sunset Hill Map, too
I couldn’t agree more my friend
Yea but he missed a lot of other instrumental parts
The genius of Yuzo Koshiro - the main developer of Ancient.
3 square waves, 1 white noise, infinite perfection
1:05 just this melody alone makes the master system version the best green hill theme
That melody is a fucking multiplier!
1:05 you know you wanted to hear this part on it’s own

I love how the line separators are green to correspond with Green Hill.

Ah, the classic Sonic Song everyone knows and loves. Now deconstructed and in 8-bit.
4:04 EVERYBODY NOW
I love the way PSG2 sounds so much in this track
That broken chording adds so much to the drive of the song. I wish it was in the genesis version.
That's the secret recipe. Most mixes miss this one or don't remark it enough.
it's weird, I never realized the main melody wasn't doubled up after the first section

Probably due to the Master System/Game Gear soundtrack being handled by Yuzo Kushiro, who knew how to handle SEGA sound hardware.
finally get to hear that awesome bassline in 8-bit

Putting the Game Gear Version and the Genesis version of Green Hill Zone together sounds like heaven btw.
And It's even possible to do that on real hardware
@@ssg-eggunner Probably not.
@@The_Lolatron_ It is
The mega drive has both the YM2612 (FM) and the SN76489(PSG), the PSG Will sound exactly the same as the master System version
@@ssg-eggunner That means replacing the old PSG of the original Genesis PSG if that's the case.

This wasn't the first sonic game
This is a masterpiece.
1:30 is all I need
This is a banger
1:44 fav part
This shit is literally 4-bit and it's still fire
Edit: might be an idiot here
You're not an idiot
No, don't call yourself that.
The Sega Master System is 8-bit, by the way.
goes hard

But as you can hear the PSG2 Melodies aren't present in masato's original version

Bonita musica
Beautiful! It's just so good to hear this tune.
Yuzo Koshiro masterpiece!
Super stuff. Please consider doing the Bridge & Jungle themes from this game. Great soundtrack.
thats some cool stuff! keep going!
Yuzo Koshiro composed this version btw which is interesting he did work on Sonic

I love this so much
great recreation from master Yuzo Koshiro
Please do more from sonic 1 sms
2:47 sounds like something I would make
finally, i get to see the legendary psg 2
Request: Ristar ending star humming
How come the square waves are shaped differently than the other master system/game gear videos?
I have no idea
Good Question
In Deflemask They are 1:1 Squares
Was about to make the same question...I'm confused

I think it has something to do with the oscilloscope generator.
Didnt yuzo koshiro compose this version
Yes. 😎
I love it!
Do you think we can get this(oscilloscope) for the sonic advance series ?
Can you deconstruct sonic mania green Hill zone act 1 please
Could you make a download for all the channels? Thanks
In some aspects this is better than the Megadrive version.
Try To get the titre intro music like sonic 2 on sonic 1 now
its very nice ,but original 16 bits its much better ofcourse has less limitations.
