Thank you for this. I've been putting this off for awhile since the prices of everything went up and I'm tired of detolfs (not to mention it's not worth buying them since the price doubled). Got the shelf for a good price on sale ($65) and I'm in the process of securing Acrylic (have a family member who owns a cabinet making business and he has a supplier he worked with for decades) so I'm saving a good chunk of change. One thing I would LOVE (and I know it's probably a hassle) if you you took all these updates and made a single video with them inserted into the original so when I'm building it I don't have to jump between all three videos. But I can live with that since it's all so helpful. So thanks so much for all this!

I believe one of the pics on my community tab has a case with black shelf liner. It looks great. Like you said, it's inexpensive so if you don't like it or it gets damaged, you can always change it. Is this the correct link to the expanded PVC that you use in this video it look like you said you had 96x48. All I see through the link is 24 x48 sheets
The full sheet of PVC is only available from a place that specializes in plastics and acrylic. Though recently I did see some on the Home Depot website but I'm not sure if they're available in every area. I added the links to the other PVC sheets on Amazon as an option for those not near a one of these places. You can find out if you have a place that specializes in plastic by doing a Google search of "acrylic sheets near me" and then check the map for all the locations that may specialize in the plastic. I live in the Philadelphia area so a place that I use is called Everything Plastic. You can use this as a reference. Let me know if you need help tracking down some PVC sheet. Awesome tips and videos! Could I ask if it would be easy/possible to use the pvc board on the sides instead of plexi? I almost never look at stuff from the side, and would like to have several stacked next to each other so no need to see into the one next door! Im planning on all black too, so I just thought it might cut down on reflections and maybe be a little stiffer for the sides. But having never worked with the pvc foam board I’m not even sure if it’s available in a big enough size for that? Thanks for any help you can give!
Thank you so much for watching!!! You can definitely use the PVC on the sides instead of plexi. All you need to do is cut it to size and attach it. It would look really good. I am working with someone right now who is making their case this way. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me. Thank you again!!!!!
Hello! The PVC sheet is not sturdy enough. For the other panels that utilize the PVC sheets, I've decided to go with 3 mm thick PVC sheets. They work just as well as a 6 mm and they're cheaper. Thanks so much for watching! And if you have any other questions please do not hesitate to reach out. I'd be happy to help.
Hi Jason! 1mm thick PVC would work. It will be flimsier but since it is being used for back panels or under the shelf it should be fine. You can always buy a small piece and how it is before you order enough for the entire display. If you have any other questions, I'm here to help. Thank you!
I have not had issues with the tape on the acrylic. The type I used is meant for rugged use. It's been on there for 3yrs and still looks great. Thanks so much for watching!
hi there If i was to use these shelving for my 1/4 scale statues would the particle board hold them since they can be heavy, I will be displaying about 4 1.4 scale statues would i have to find something that had center support
Hi! The shelves I have can hold 200lbs per shelf. So these can definitely handle 1/4 scale statues. Several of those who built them are statue collectors. I do a live stream where I show off collectors who have built these cases and have sent me pictures. You should check some of those live streams out and you'll see several statue collectors. Thank you so much for watching!
Hi awesome video btw. My question would be what if you just wanted to do the back panel as one sheet or covering? How would you go about doing so? Instead of cutting each back panel for each shelf.
Thank you so much for watching! You could add the back panel on the back of the display using the magnets. Or you could use black duct tape and tape it to the frame. I did the individual panels because I wanted to hide the muscle rack frame on the inside. What color do you plan on doing it inside of your case?
@@PopCultureLivingRoom that color would be white I think displays better. I’m trying to move away from the Detolf era. Tho I did do my detolf with custom mirrors. Here’s a tip for anyone wants to take their detolf to the next level. Just take the back of the detolf to a place that cut mirrors and tell them you a mirror cut in the same sized and thickness as the back glass. Bam! Now you view your figures from the back.
How well do the acrylic sheets hold up with the magnet tape? Before I convert my shelf, I’m slightly concerned they’ll give out over time and fall into my statues. Have you tried gluing the magnet tape to the acrylic sheets? Thanks for the helpful videos!
Thanks for watching! The magnetic tape I use in the video is the strongest. I've tried others and they do not compare. In my first Livestream I mentioned super gluing the magnetic tape to the acrylic. I would definitely recommend doing that. I have not had any issues with the acrylic staying on the frame. It's been solid. magnets do not lose much strength over time.
Hi Nathaniel! What places are you looking at for the PVC sheets? I get mine from the same place I get acrylic. They specialize in plastics. Thanks again watching!
For this video I used a 3mm PVC sheet. This is a bit more expensive but it is also more high end looking. It also comes in different colors. You can find this online by searching PVC sheets. Or if you want to try to find somebody near you, companies that sell acrylic sheets also sell the PVC sheets. I do a search for acrylic sheets near me and search each website that comes up. In my part 1 video of this build I used white fiberboard from Home Depot which is cheaper but you need to modify it.
Amazing work! I want to do this for my son. I was wondering if there is enough clearance between the covered shelf and the pvc backboard to slip down behind it? How thick does the PVC back board have to be?
Thank you so much! and Thank you for watching. Once the PVC sheet is slipped in behind the shelf, there is no more room. I used 3mm (1/8") thick PVC sheet. Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out to me with any other questions.
@@PopCultureLivingRoom pardon my thick headedness Lol, a shelf that is covered with material still has enough room on the for the backbaord (3mm) to slip behind it and rest? I plan to use thin microfiber to cover the shelves.
Hi Nathaniel. Sorry to hear that. Would you be able to send me a picture of what's going on to my email popculturelivingroom@gmail.com? This will give me a better idea of what's going on. Can you also send me a picture of your magnet layout on the back of your board?
Definitely. Several people who have made this display have put the board in the back. If you do it from behind, you could use Velcro or black duct tape to adhere it to the frame. I like putting the board in front of the frame so the board hides the frame and you can't tell that it's a garage shelf. Thanks so much for watching and if you have any other questions, I'm here to help.
It's a tapestry I got from Amazon. I tried to get the link for it but it is no longer on Amazon. The closest to it I found was this one: amzn.to/3QegAKt
@@PopCultureLivingRoom Thanks I really appreciate that. This is what I like about this community, so many people willing to help and share their knowledge.
Has anyone had any issues with the PVC not fitting? I just got my 3mm PVC in and I'm not sure if it'll fit all the way to the bottom. The boards are in pretty tight
I dont understand tip 4 or how its done. What do you mean slide it behind the shelf? Like are you forcing it behind it, cutting part of the shelf off so it slides down?
Thank you for watching and thanks for your question. There should be enough space in the back, between the shelf and the frame to fit the fiberboard or PVC sheet. You shouldn't have to force it or cut the shelf. What you will do in actuality is cut the back panel to size, add it to the display and then put the shelf back in. I hope that makes sense. I will address it in my upcoming livestream.
Hi Costa, I’ve been following this project all the way from Australia and think you’ve done a great job with this display shelf! I’m not a very handy person, but I have been considering giving this a try as I currently have no where to house my tumblers. With this update, it seems like it takes out a lot of the steps for the back panels, is that right? The reduced steps are giving me a bit more confidence about giving this a go.
Hi! Thanks so much for watching! The update does take out a couple steps to make dustproofing easier. Also, if you don't mind paying a little more and can find them for a reasonable price, the expanded PVC sheets are so easy to work with. I feel that anyone can make this display case. Handy or not. You only need to take your time. I tell this to everyone and I mean it, if you have any questions when you're making your display case, please reach out to me. I love helping out and I want everyone to succeed. I can't wait to see your finished display case! Good luck with your build!
Hi! Thanks for watching. When you remove the shelf there isn't another shelf underneath. In part one of the garage shelf display case build, I show you how to cut panels to stick underneath the shelves so that you can hide the imperfections of the upholstery work that you do on the shelves. If you haven't seen part 1 of the display case build, I highly recommend it.
Great question and thank you for watching! Honest answer, I was trying to make this case look as close to a Moducase as I could and Moducase uses faux white leather for their white interior cases. I do believe I use a higher quality faux leather than Moducase. The beauty of this build is you can make the interior however you like. I have another garage shelf where I made one section black and the other two, white. For the black section, I use upholstery grade black velvet and black PVC foam sheets.
@@webjaker For the shelves if you go with fabric I would go with an upholstery grade fabric. If you want a black interior, I recommend upholstery grade velvet. If you want to bypass fabric, you could always paint the shelf. Some of the people that have made this display, spray painted the shelves. You can check out some finished cases from the community on my Instagram. They may give you some ideas.
Hey Costa currently in build mode, looking at expanded PVC. Did you buy each piece for $66. That's substantially more then the fiber board. So I just want to get some clarification. Thanks and Great videos. Game changers
Thank you so much for watching! Yes PVC is more expensive than the fiberboard. When I bought my PVC sheets they were $40 for a full sheet of white or $50 for black and the fiberboard was $20 a sheet. I moved up to the PVC because it is easier to work with and you don't have to make a vinyl border to cover the edges. What places are you looking at to get the PVC sheets? I use a place in my neighborhood that specializes in acrylics and plastics. If you have a place like that near you, they will be much cheaper than a place like Home Depot or Lowe's or even Amazon. I hope this helps. If you need help finding a place for plastics let me know and I'll see what I can do.
The reason why I cut my back panels is to hide the frame. I hate the way the frame looks. I wanted an elevated look and appearance and wanted to mimic the look and feel of a moducase. The way I have my case you can't tell that it was a garage shelf. I am not a fan of putting one big piece on the back but that's the beauty of this build, you can do what you want. And I love that. I love seeing other people's choices for their cases. There is no wrong way my friend. Thank you so much for watching!

Hi Nathaniel. Sorry to hear that. Would you be able to send me a picture of what's going on to my email popculturelivingroom@gmail.com? This will give me a better idea of what's going on. Can you also send me a picture of your magnet layout on the back of your board?
@@PopCultureLivingRoom for sure, I'll get on that, thanks!
Could i just put 1 entire piece of board behind the shelf rather than each individual shelf in case i need to adjust the heights later?
Can you mention where you obtained that cool poster above your desk?
It's a tapestry I got from Amazon. I tried to get the link for it but it is no longer on Amazon. The closest to it I found was this one: amzn.to/3QegAKt
@@PopCultureLivingRoom That's alright. Thanks man
Hey, great tutorials, really got an education. I live in your general vicinity, who did you get your PVC sheets from?
Thank you! I appreciate it! I get my acrylic and PVC sheets from Everything Plastic.

@@PopCultureLivingRoom Thank you sir! I will check them out

I haven't heard from anyone having issues. The 3 mm PVC she should fit. Make sure that you put the PVC sheet in first and then slide in the shelf.
Did you notch the front corners of the 1/2” acrylic shelf’s ?
Yes I did. I used a jigsaw.
@@PopCultureLivingRoom thank you , my 66 Batmobile ships Monday , and I’ve been build your / my display, thank you so much for your help
Awesome! I ordered the 66 Batmobile also. You'll have to send me pics with it in your display.
@@PopCultureLivingRoom most definitely, also where did you get those acrylic “risers“ you have your figures on
I got the risers from Amazon. It looks like the prices of a gone up but I guess that's common with our world today. Here's a link: amzn.to/3sJNBny
Any ideas for locking the displays up, specifically, to keep kids from opening them?
Unfortunately no. With this display there is no way to lock it. You could try modifying an Ikea cabinet with doors. Thanks for watching!
Pretty cool channel. I just subscribe and hit the notification bell...🤝🏻🤝🏻🤝🏻
Thanks so much! I'm happy you like it.

Recent sub. Love your energy brother 🤘🏼
That means a lot DJ LINX! Thank you!
Im confused about step 4. You removed the shelf but there was another shelf underneath it.
Honest question, why the faux leather?
Great question and thank you for watching!
Honest answer, I was trying to make this case look as close to a Moducase as I could and Moducase uses faux white leather for their white interior cases. I do believe I use a higher quality faux leather than Moducase.
The beauty of this build is you can make the interior however you like. I have another garage shelf where I made one section black and the other two, white. For the black section, I use upholstery grade black velvet and black PVC foam sheets.
@@PopCultureLivingRoom I guess my question is, other than aesthetics
What other fabrics/materials would you recommend for a case like this?
Why would you even cut the back panels at all? Why not just slide or tape thr entire piece to the back.
