    ** FAQ **
    Hi everyone!
    It’s been a year since I made this video and I’ve been fortunate enough to receive such overwhelmingly positive feedback along with many follow up questions on the build process. I figured it best to address some of these frequently asked questions so you don’t have to go looking for the answer in the comments below ☺️
    * What thickness are the acrylic panels? *
    1/8th inch for each panel all around. It’s worth mentioning that I’ve built 2 additional cabinets and used 1/8th inch panels for the front to maintain rigidity but used 1/16th inch panels for the sides since they were a bit cheaper. Heads up they are flimsy / less rigid but they get the job done since I never remove the side panels.
    * How did you fit the light bars into the cabinet? *
    I fully inserted the connectors as much as possible into each end of the light bar then folded / bent the wire-connector 90 degrees to fit into the cabinet. It’s a tight squeeze but you can briefly see it around the 5:55 mark. Alternatively if you can buy the 3-foot light bars instead for better clearance without the need to forcefully bend any connectors.
    * Did you wrap both sides of the shelves in black cloth or just the top side? *
    I wrapped both sides of each shelf in black cloth for the sake of uniformity. It requires more material but was worth the final outcome in my opinion.
    * How is the magnetic tape holding up? *
    Some parts of the adhesive magnetic tape did indeed wear off after uploading this video possibly due to weather / climate or just cheap materials. An easy solution was buying this pack of small circular neodymium magnets. I just super-glued a few of them around the corners & edges of acrylic borders for a much stronger magnetic hold to the metal frame.
    Non-affiliate link: a.co/d/3TnxNvw
    * How did you join the cabinets together? *
    Just inserted black zip ties through the holes of the vertical metal frames where the 2 cabinets meet in the center.
    That’s all for now but I’ll add more to this list if it comes to mind 😅 As always thanks so much all your kindness and support. Best of luck on your custom builds, and until next time, stay safe and take care! ❤️

      @PosingwithPeter - Question about wrapping both sides of the shelves...
      Could you elaborate a bit on how / where exactly you folded + tacked on the fabric for the other sides?
      (To keep the cloth as clean & taut as possible on both surfaces.)
      I would guess the surface you cover last becomes the top-side so the visible fold+tacks are hidden under by the frame.

    Ok, after a few days work, my cabinet is finally done! A massive thank you to 3 youtube channels without which i would not have been able to even attempt such a project. Costa, you were my main inspiration... you are truly a genius! Posing with peter, i used many of your tips, you were extremely helpful. Sixth scale hero, my fellow aussie, helped me source materials in Oz and i used manyof your tips also. I highly recommend watching the videos that these 3 pioneers put up before starting a project like this. Thank you so much again!

    This design is exactly what I’m looking for! I’ve been looking at display solutions for my collection of Gundam and Star Wars models, but I also need one continuous shelf for my model railroad (something that standard bookshelves cannot accommodate). Your design allows for this, and because it’s modular, it can easily be expanded to wrap around a room.

      @@PosingwithPeter hopefully you see this but what did you do for the bottoms of the inside? Pop culture put a 2nd board under the all the mains shelves and yours looks like its black. But at 4:28, it looks stapled but you can still see the cardboard texture. but at 5:58 you can see its covered and i didnt see anything in the video covering that.

    • @PosingwithPeter
      @PosingwithPeter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @dukeroy6724 Hey there ☺️ Great observation with the video clips, and thanks for providing the time stamps as reference. As it happens, I did mention in the video that I wrapped the brown particleboard shelves using the black fabric bed sheets, but you are correct that I didn’t exactly show this. As you pointed out at 4:28, I only stapled the fabric to one side of the shelf when I recorded this part. But off-camera, I wrapped both sides of each shelf using the black fabric and then stapled again which is what you end up seeing at 5:58.
      I hope that helps, and thanks so much for watching!

      Right?? When he posted the list of items and costs I was like,”ITS EVEN CHEAPER CUZ I HAVE TOOLS!!” 😂 You don’t know how excited I was seeing that bottom line. A great DIY compared to an expensive prebuilt item or even those cheap cubbies made my heart sing!! Now the only thing I need to do is kind of girl it up so that it blends in since it’ll be in my she room and not in the rest of the house.

      I do have to ask though, do you have to individually plug in each set of light bars into a power board? Cause I wanna minimise the amount of plugs for a display cabinet.

    • @PosingwithPeter
      @PosingwithPeter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m really glad this video popped up in your feed!
      As for the lights bars, they connect to each other via daisy-chain and the necessary wires are all included, so this massive cabinet only took up 2 wall plugs.
      Hope that helps, and thanks so much for your positive feedback! 😁

    Holy crap. I've got two of these shelves in my work room and I've never considered using them to display my collection. I'm going to have to check out Costa now. Thank you for sharing yours. Just to let others know, if your going to put anything heavier on these shelves you should go ahead and change out the shelf boards for plywood cut to the same size. You can get Lowes or Home Depot to cut the boards for you (call their lumber department ahead of time and make sure the saw is operational, ours was often broke). Fair warning though, the associates are all trained differently so check the boards to make sure they are correct. Also FYI, my shelves are from Lowes and were cheaper than Amazon. They're the same style though just a different name. Every store, even Walmart, sales these. Keep an eye out for deals at Lowes/HD for deals around Black Friday.

    • @PosingwithPeter
      @PosingwithPeter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for the heads up! Yeah I saw that some of these racks can vary in pricing pretty drastically depending on where people buy (Amazon, Costco, Home Depot, Lowes etc) and I think I got lucky with my racks being $98 each since a lot of other ones average $150+. Great point you make about the associates being trained differently - some employees will always be more skilled or detail oriented than others in any field but it’s definitely a great point to bring up when shopping for custom cut plywood.
      But yeah, be sure to check out Costa’s video playlist on custom cabinets - I and many others could not have built our cabinets if it weren’t for his awesome blueprint. I hope it helps, and thanks again for watching & commenting!

    Wow Peter, I am blown away and very inspired by your video. I have 6 Detolfs but need a better way to display my collectibles and don't want the wait or cost of Moducases, and I think your solution is just what I need! Question about your acrylic panels, what is the thickness? I have scoured Amz and can't find the right product and will try glass/plastics stores in my area, but am not sure if I should be pricing 1/16", 1/8", or something else. The project seems daunting yet very exciting, thanks for the inspiration! (Edit... I see now it's written 1/8")

    • @PosingwithPeter
      @PosingwithPeter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aw wow thanks so much for sharing your kind words and positive feedback 🥰 I’m really glad you found this video helpful & inspiring 😁
      As for the acrylic thickness, I went with 1/8” panels since I was worried that 1/16” might be too thin and fragile especially since I wasn’t planning on cutting them into individual pieces. I wanted them to be thick & sturdy since they would be covering the entire front-side of the cabinets. However it’s worth mentioning that they’re a bit heavy at full size.
      I’ve actually gotten rid of my detolfs recently to build another pair of garage cabinets in the living room - I plan on trying 1/16” acrylic sheets this time so I’ll try to put out a video update whenever I get around to finishing the build in the coming months.
      I hope that helps. Indeed the project may seem daunting but after owning detolfs for several years, I can honestly say that I wish I had converted to garage shelves sooner. Posing & displaying figures is much more fun because they’re no longer restricted to a tiny cube space. Plus, you can sell your detolfs locally for some quick cash to fund the garage shelves - that’s what I did 😁

    • @trueCinemaniac
      @trueCinemaniac ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PosingwithPeter Thanks for the great info. I might be biting off more than I can chew on my project, but I am eyeing 77" x 72" x 48" garage shelves. I mocked up my vision in photoshop and conceptually, it would be a great long display for all my Hot Toy and NBA Enterbay one-sixth figures, Star Wars helmets, 1:4 scale statues and 1:1 scale prop replicas. However, now that you've cautioned me about the weight, I'm nervous that 77" x 72" at 1/8" thickness may be way too heavy and I may be delusional about the magnets being able to support the panel. I'd love to hear how 1/16" acrylic sheets work out for your new project. Best of luck on them, can't wait to see your video on it!

    what i used for the shelves is Acrylic felt fabric. I believe it's what moducase uses as well. It's not pure wool felt, its thinner and it looks just like felt. You couldn't tell. It's very affordable too. And for the backboard pvc foam boards is the way to go. Its another thing moducase uses.. Sleek looking, lightweight & easy to cut. These display cases came out great!!! A lot of options out there.

    Honestly…..this is one of the most realistic DIY builds and that spreadsheet at the end…..Chefs kiss my dude. Even for a chic like me, I wanted to find an adultish display for my WW stuff and other collectibles even though yours are next level. Nevertheless I didn’t want those stupid expensive for no reason cubbies.
    It was great that you still mentioned and linked the inspo project. Sometimes doing something for the first time is what sets others out on the same journey to find shortcuts or other ways that will suit them. Thanks for being of great character and integrity.

    What a great idea! I've been playing around with several ideas on how to build closed display shelves, but this might be my favorite! Sam's Club has several comparable options including a one similar to yours in the 24" depth with black laminate shelves and hidden connectors for $95. There's also a silver one that's taller (7'), has 6 metal shelves at 18" deep for $75, though people complain about this one being too flimsy.

    • @PosingwithPeter
      @PosingwithPeter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, I'm tackling this build and ordered those lights. Accidentally ordered the 4000k ones without noticing...safe to say, i think those are bright enough to do the job. Good god these things are bright!

    • @PosingwithPeter
      @PosingwithPeter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ohh haha dang well I’m glad the 4000k lights are still working out for ya. Yeah they’re super bright compared to traditional LED strips that are used on detolfs, but fortunately the horizontal metal frame of the shelf helps block out some of the light so that it’s not so blinding.
      Heads up Brody, a common question I’ve received about the lighting is how to fit the lights into the cabinet - the cable connectors stick out quite a bit at the end of each light bar, but you can just bend the connector 90 degrees in order to squeeze them in. It’s a tight fit but works.
      Hope that helps and best of luck with your custom build!

    • @PosingwithPeter
      @PosingwithPeter  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lI-tm2pn I actually still have a Billy book case! it was the very first cabinet that I used when I began collecting 1/6 figures (prior to owning detolfs).
      Indeed Billy bookcases are less expensive, but unfortunately they don’t provide nearly as much shelf space compared to storage these racks.
      $89 Billy bookcase: 31.5” wide x 11” deep
      $99 Shelf Rack: 48” wide x 18” deep
      Pretty significant increase in surface area for $11.
      At the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference. Billy bookcases are definitely a budget-friendly solution, no doubt. This video was simply meant to compare & contrast the popular Moducase design & prices.

    AWESOME VIDEO, Peter! I too came across Costa's ingenious videos first, and they really inspired me to make my own DIY Display Case for my dinosaur figures collection. I love how he goes in depth with his step by step process on the whole build, as well as sharing exactly what he used and where he bought everything from. I then found your video where you've taken Costa's ideas and added to them with a few great ideas of your own! And I appreciate that you've shared what you'd bought and from where as well. It helps tremendously in gathering all the supplies I'll need to build my own. :) I also like how you used one long sheet of acrylic on the front, so that you can change the shelf heights in the future if you want to. I think that was brilliant! And I really loved your idea of using the microfiber bed sheets to cover the backs and shelves. Your idea sparked my imagination and led me to discover a way to help bring my display to life. Since I'm going for realism in my build, I'm planning to use a cloth rainforest photography backdrop to attach to the background of my shelf unit, and a grass photography backdrop cloth for the shelves themselves that the dinosaurs will stand on. I think it's going to look so cool! :oD
    I only have one question for you: at 6:25 you state that you applied two layers of magnetic tape around the edges for each panel. Since you didn't add the weather strips like Costa did, I was wondering what your reasoning was for using 2 layers of the magnetic tape instead of just one layer?
    Thank you so much for making this video and sharing it, Peter! It really adds to the awesome tips that Costa shared, and helps make the build even better! And your collection is AMAZING! I LOVE how very REAL all of your figures look! Just fantastic all the way around!!!!
    :)

      @PosingwithPeter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Danalynn! Wow thanks SO much for your incredibly positive feedback! I’m so glad you enjoyed both my and Costa’s cabinet tutorials, and I LOVE how you’ll be using rainforest backdrop & grass as flooring for your dinosaur diorama display! That’s gonna be so EPIC!
      To answer your question, I double-layered the magnetic tape since there would still be a small gap for dust to seep through if I had only used a single layer of magnetic tape… additionally a single layer wasn’t strong enough to hold the large acrylic panel to the metal rack, so using double layer magnetic tape not only added some thickness as dust-prevention but also allowed the magnetic tape to make contact with the metal frame. It’s worth mentioning that I’m currently building 2 more cabinets just like this in my living room right now but instead of using double layer magnetic tape, I’m trying out small circular neodymium magnets. They’re much stronger and cheaper too, so I may end up reverting back to using normal pile/foam weather stripping to dust proof. We shall see 😁
      I hope that helps clarify, and thanks again so much for your kind words and support 😊 Best of luck on your custom cabinet build! If you end up making a video/collection tour after everything is all setup then please be sure to drop me the link! 🤩🙏

      Aw thanks man! 🥰 Haha how coincidental -- I was literally just watching your epic posing video for Pennywise and had just left a comment over there at the same time you were writing this 😂
      I gotta get you, John, and Lael on a posing livestream in the near future. I'll reach out to ya guys when I'm ready to launch that show in the coming weeks!

    Thanks for this video. Definitely helpful. I was thinking Moducase but the waiting is to long. Plexiglass is getting expensive as well but this is the best way to get a display case faster.

      He’s suspending using a string that’s tied to a small hook inserted into the back of the figure. I made a video on how to do it 😊

    Great video & it gives me ideas on how I would like to make my own version of this. Also, I can shave about $80 off of the price just because I have some of the tools & supplies already on hand, so it makes it even more affordable. Definitely saving this video for referral later on. Thanks!

    Turned out great. That’s funny, basically built what are you guys see on my background three years ago doing something very similar. I guess I should’ve made a video lol.
    Only difference for me is I use Phillips hue strip lights, and spotlights, and I used full white acrylic for the back rather than wood with sheets.
    So much better than detolfs though and it’s fun to build!

    • @PosingwithPeter
      @PosingwithPeter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anthony! Great to see ya in the comments 🤩🙌 Haha yeah man you definitely should’ve shared the knowledge with everyone a few years ago! Would’ve helped save fellow collectors a ton of money by switching to Geico, err I mean custom display cabinets 😂
      But yeah man it definitely looks way more premium and sleek than detolfs. If Hot Toys reissues the 89 Batmobile then I’m DEFINITELY building a separate 24” cabinet to house that beauty🤞
      And thanks for stopping by! Always a pleasure seeing ya on the streams with Lael / Will / Jay / Dante and the gang. Would love to have ya on a future posing livestream at some point if you’re ever down (I really gotta jump start that show lol)

      But you’re right, so much better than detolfs and so much more creativity with posing :)
      Keep up those posing!
