    I have the absolute worst time growing cucumbers! I have root knot nematodes in my soil. I'm trying different methods by not using my soil, and using Kellogg's raised bed soil in containers. That works until the vine borer visits at the very top of the vine. I refuse to give up by starting new plants. I got my seeds from your seed shop. They start off ok until....
    I would love to have one plant survive like yours. Thanks for sharing these tips. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

    I needed this just now. I need to start out other seedlings. The cucumber plants I have are not pollinated. I'm losing my harvest. 😔 They're such beautiful big plants too. I need more flowers around to bring the pollinators. Thanks Gary!

      Sometimes less work is more, try letting your lawn go a little longer than you usually would and allow some of those dandelions and such to pop up, they attract bees better than a well manicured lawn will, and they grow a lot faster than a typical flower!

      Me too. This is just the motivation I needed to get some more cukes started. I lost one group of plants to powdery mildew early, and sort of gave up on planting more. But I have seeds and I have another 3-4 months of growing. I’m off to the potting table now. Thanks Gary. Love the book too.

    I buy my starts. This year I found a 4 cell pack of pickling cukes and each cell had 4 plants. I figured I would thin them out if some struggled but they are all doing great! Im feeding and watering on a routine. I also planted them alll at once because I like to make cucumber & onion salad, and pickles.

      Yum! Cucumber and onion salad!!!

    • @TGSureal
      @TGSureal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RodeoCowgirl-55 Sorry I didn't see your question for so long. I have 2 recipes that I follow but ultimately adjust it based on if I'm making more or less.
      I do sort of an Amish/Dutch cuke salad with milk and mayo, and a sweet vinegar cuke salad.
      For both recipes I clean the cukes, sometimes peel them, sometimes don't. I use a serving bowl that has a lid to cut the cukes and onions into. Its maybe 3 quarts?
      I do not drain the cukes or dry them once cut. I do account for the juice watering down the recipes so when you make it to taste, don't forget the cucumber juice will water it down and cut the vinegar a bit more.
      Dutch style:
      Add 1 cup mayo to mixing bowl and whisk in 1 small can or 1/2 large can evaporated milk until mixture is frothy. Add about 3 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar to thicken the mix and give it a zing. Add salt and pepper to taste. Dump over cukes and onions, cover and refrigerate at least a couple hours.
      Sweet vinegar style:
      Take 1 cup apple cider vinegar and whisk in 1 cup of sugar until dissolved. Then add maybe 3 teaspoons water to thin out the vinegar. You want it a little strong because the water from the cukes will thin it out more.
      After you make a few times, you will get it down to just how you like it. You can also add the dry herb dill to either recipe to change it up a bit.

    Second year of gardening in the mojave desert, Zone 8b. Failed last year but learned a lot. Watering every other day. First crop of corn is six feet high. Second crop, planted the end of May, is knee high (knee high by the 4th of July). Cukes and maters are prodigious. Have already pulled over a dozen cukes. Tomatoes are all over the place getting bigger. Okra is popping. Zukes and Yeller Squash are monstrous. Started planting in February, have already cleared out the Lincoln peas and replanted pole beans.
    Didn't have a lot of money, so went around the area picking up captain beds, bookcases, and cabinets off the side of the road as planters. Local rancher provided free manure and loaded it into the pickup. 15 loads and everything's filled with a reserve pile. At this point it looks like shit but its working.

    Just survived the heat dome, Portland Oregon, last 3 days, 109, 113, 116 temps... surprisingly, my garden sustained little damage, cukes and melons loved it..I thought for sure everything would of singed to a crisp.... but I watered everyday, and shade cloth helped

    I have been so struggling with my cucumbers. 2 years in a row of bad cucumber production and I've noticed others having the same issues. I have Straight 8, Marketmore, Poinsett, White Spine, Tendergreen, and a white cucumber. Mine were started originally from my own seed, but then I had a huge hailstorm kill them all but 1, so then I had to start them in ground. This happened on June 8th, so they have only been in the ground for just a month other than the 1 original remaining. Temperatures in the 80's, low upper 50's/low 60's. Soil amended in April with Black Kow, mushroom compost, blood and bone meal, fertilized with fish emulsion. My container cucumbers that are the same age are already running, the ones in the ground haven't even gotten past the 4 sets of leaves yet. I also use Jobes organic slow release fertilizer. The one original cucumber plant is about 3 feet long and running with blooms, but the plant just doesn't look that great. Water daily in the mornings.

    I will look for the cuke pruning video :) You mentioned staggering your plantings, took me a few years to learn to stagger by size rather than time, at least in my currently challenging garden setup. I'd transplant new cukes or squash every two weeks early in the season, and they'd all start taking off at the same time anyways, leaving me awash in squash or other fruity goodness all at once.

      Well take notes. Sometimes it happens. If the insects jump its flea beetles. Try insect dust. Veg oil can damage leaves it is too much, so next time less oil and soap. Anyway don't quit. Start some new plants. Good luck.

    Hi Gary! Everything looks superb! Question: I just came in the house 10 minutes ago upset because I accidentally cut one of my lines off of my cucumber plant by mistake. I’ve been trying to grow cucumbers for the last three years and this year I finally have some success. However, I accidentally cut off one of the vines with some of the bigger cucumbers coming in is there anything I can do I just have the vine sitting in a glass of water right now. The leaves have gone limp. Should I try to graft it back on? Should I stick it down in the soil or put it in a glass of water and try to root it? Also are you growing lemons right now I have a tree that I’ve been growing from seed for the last four years. It’s a beautiful bush but I have no lemons and I’m looking for a local graft I’m Not too far from Fallsgrove. Thanks!!!

I have never had plants that would thrive if only watered once a week. My plants are mostly directly planted. All of my cucs are. They look amazing! I promptly put a fence around my cucumbers! Your gardens look really great. If you're leaving for the weekend do you have your plants on a watering routine? I will be gone 3 days and I am worried about watering my plants. I have the timers and can hook it up. If it's rained alot prior to you leaving, should I hook up the watering system? I have a question... My dad who has always had a green thumb told me that when you plant cucumbers and they die off or the season ends, that you need to plant something different in its place the next time you plant something. My question is this, I have a container garden and am growing cukes in a planter. I think the plants are starting to die off, but would like to replace the dying plants with new ones. Can I do that in the same container with the same soil conditions in that container? Or do I need to dump out the soil and start over? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but my kiddos eat A LOT of cucumbers and I want to keep our supply going. Thank you!

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN yup. I’ve been watering my in-ground beds about every 2 days in the heat. So far they are doing good. Just need to get a day without rain to spray the tomatoes. They’ve got a pretty bad leaf spot problem.

    Can you but 2 standard cucumbers in a 10 gallon grow bag?

      You can if you stay up on watering and fertilizing. They may need water 3x a day at full size and summer heat

      Nope. They can be but most cucumbers are not. You have to buy hybrids

    The animals always dig up anything I put fish emulsion on. What is an equivalent?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything that is water-soluble. Animal pest are real issue. Id go with the processed one at 1/2 strength.
