How to Prune Cucumber Plants with Leaf & Vine Examples: Principles and Purpose... Not Perfection

- My pruning method may not be pretty but it is effective. Remove leaves from the cucumber plant's base and prune lateral vines (as you wish) to manage shape and size. I have been doing this for over a decade and always have more cucumber than I can eat.

How amazing is it that we can plant a tiny little seed, which grows a bunch of flowers, that attract little critters to pollinate the flowers, which in turn creates hundreds if not thousands more seeds? Isn't that neat?

That's what fascinates me, too; and how a huge plant can start growing from a tiny seed, and produce so much food or flowers and lots more seeds to continue the process.
No matter how old I get, it still amazes me!!! I’m like a child watching the garden grow!!!

Very helpful demo, thanks! Some folks are able to maintain an orderly, methodical garden, but those folks are not me!! Sometimes accidents happen while pruning and I've been known to accidentally break off the main growing stem from vining plants. If I can't splint it back into place (like harming the main stem from a late-season zuke) I will let one of the production vines lower down on the broken stem get in the driver's seat.
That works. Nothing wrong with semi chaotic order.

Thank you!!! I have an indoor cucumber plant (since it's cold outside now) and I had so many damaged leaves and it was causing other parts to dry up because there was no sun. It looks beautiful now and there's so much more sun in the container!!!

One of my gardening I had 30 years ago, I had monthly magazines called Rodale I think not sure. I didn't even had garden back then that is why I got those magazines. I think I still have those books somewhere. I remember it says go out to woods and find spots where leaves have fallen down over the years and go shovel some dirt out as it is very rich top soil. My husband back then tilled the rich ground up to make the job easier to shovel them up.

30 years ago my very first cucumber plants, my kids had kiddy pool and when it is time to drain pool out, I would use that water to water my cucumbers. I put 3 t-post in and weave my yarn around and around and around for cucumbers to crawl up and golly I had so many cucumbers to give away. At the end of season, I just cut the yarn with dead plants and throw them in fire and use the ash for my dirt. Yarn doesn't decompose at all. I have seen yarns in my compost and they still there after couple of years.

I had some lemon Cukes vining & flowering nicely...no Cukes had came yet, but it was🌱 growing... then I got powdery mildew...i rmvd some infected leaves & sprayed w NEEM & castile soap in evening...the whole plant died 2 wks later😢😢😢...i will try again👍and USE PEPPERMINT OIL this time😁👍

I had a pot of an untrellised space 80 cuke bush plant growing next to a 6’ tomato plant - and I just took a look the other day and it’s now growing up the tomato plant! I mean, as long as it’s helping shade the tomatoes I don’t really see a problem with it - but it was certainly not the trellis I had in mind. 😂
I will say that I’m a total green finger cuke convert. Those things will grow come hell or high water; no disease seems to kill it whilst my lemon cukes are already dying. Sigh.

I am producing lime/yellow (bright) cucumbers, why and what am i doing wrong. The plant is crazy healthy Huge!?
I’m ordering the peppermint oil. Do I dilute it in a spray bottle? I also ordered the calcium Nitrate. I sure hope that works to stop the blossom end rot! I’m tired of throwing my tomatoes away.

They will get beat up and I replace them. But I prune and I do use different fungicides as needed. Always test spray though. H202, or baking soda, neem oil.

Can you use the neem spray along with the dust or should you use one or the other to control insects ?
Neem is for soft body insects, DE is for hard bodied insects

Most likely nitrogen. And they need to get planted.

Can you please do a similar video on pruning cantaloupe and watermelon??? Currently growing 3 watermelon and 3 cantaloupe in their own containers, using your 2 tomato cage trellis idea. Silly me, I thought 2 containers could share one trellis (one on each side). The trellises are 108” and these plants are already close to the top. I also had no clue how many side shoots there would be vining in the opposite direction of the trellis. I’ve read it’s okay to prune the “suckers” and the main stems after 2 or 3 melons have formed, but they’re not like tomatoes…I can’t tell which are the main stems and which are suckers or sideshoots.
Ill put it on my list. So many side shoots right.

i string my cucumber up by 2 vines directly into twine (greenhouse style). Works really great for me for keeping disease and airflow and growth for a producing and manageable plant! Much better then tomato cages. Dislike growing anything in those cages at this point...

I will definitely use this tip. One question, I've got ants crawling all over the flowers. They dont seem to affect the plants but im a bit concerned. I've never had an ant issue in my cukes before. Is this an issue?

Ants are pollinators too,unless they are farming aphids. Check for those buggers. I've had aphids on my cukes whenever I can get cukes to grow.
Comment above is right on, either you have an ant hill nearby and they're helping out pollinating while using the plant stems as a highway or they're being attracted by aphids. If there are no aphids, don't worry about it. Ants usually won't bother a full grown plant, they can be destructive to young ones though. Terro liquid ant baits or Monterey granular ant bait works great for me and the Monterey one controls roly poleys and pincher bugs as well.

Thanks. They went in as tranpslants that were 3 weeks old. Probably 35 days from planting in that spot. Pretty fast.

The leaves on my pickling cuke that I'm growing in a 5 gal. bucket are light green not the deep green they should be. I've fertilized and it's getting the right amount of water. I've used epsom salt as a foliar spray and it helped a little. Any suggestions?
I would just go with fish emulsion or a dose of the processed fertilizers with a 24 nitrogen. It is usually a nitrogen issue as they are huge feeders and 5 gallons is not a lot of space for them.

It is hard to say. Different thing can cause the same symptom. Consistent watering is key. I would say fertilizer but it can come from over feeding. Sorry

Why did you spray the cucs with peppermint spray after pruning?
I do that to manage spider mites but also to mask the sent of the cucumber wounds.

Last year I pruned and did not get much fruit this year I did not prunne and 2 plants feed me and my 2 neighbors. I have burpless cucumber that get as long as 20 inches.
You don't have to if you don't need to. But you want to prune after the plants producing and not too early.

What cases cucumbers to be bitter? They had plenty of water, they were mulched and bugs were managed well.
There honestly is on answer. Temps, moisture but Nature. If you are steady with all you mention, and have mulched the surface... you just have to wait it out.

Gary, I did this and now I have wilty vines. They look awful. The vines seem strong but the leaves are wilting like it's dying. Help! They were beautiful but so leafy but the flowers were buried in them so I pruned.
Well pruning shouldnt wilt the other leaves. Water it in and sit tight. See how they look during the cooler evening

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN it looks like I have cucumber beetles!!!!! I saw one this morning while watering the cukes really well. Seems like there's nothing I can do according to the reading I've done. I have a no dig garden of nothing but mushroom compost and my plants are thriving until this cucumber problem. Any thoughts?? I was going to succession plant but now I don't want to plant anything there! Any help is greatly appreciated. This is a devastating blow to a wildly successful garden season.

It is hard to say. But if the plant is good, it probably is a pollination issue. If they are getting pollinated but still die... I dont know what that is.

In 2020 I planted 3 cucumber plants called "market more cucumber" and created a trellis for them to climb. By mid summer I had only 1 large cucumber on each vine but many others about 1/2" long. Shortly after picking the 3 large cucumbers all the tiny cucumbers and flowers on each vine just died off. I live in upstate New York area where the growing season is about 5 months so by October I removed the 3 vines as there were no more cucumbers. This year I planted a different variety and I just picked 2 big cucumbers and all the rest are tiny once again. What the heck am I doing wrong?

That kind of sounds like you aren’t getting good pollination. Female flowers that aren’t pollinated will just die off. Did you have good pollinator activity? If not, maybe plant some flowers to attract more? Or try hand pollinating.
@@rhuffstedtler I should have updated this. By October 2021 the small cucumbers began to take off. Suddenly we had more cukes than we needed and started giving them to the neighbors. I did see an increase in pollination activity also.
This Memorial Day 2022 I once again planted cucumbers so we will see how these turn out.

Pickles, cucumber salad (cukes, tomatoes and onions) I once floured them and fried them like fried yellow squash. They were good.
