You can also put a few drops of oil in the water. It doesn't take much because the oil spreads over the surface. Personally I would suggest cooking oil like canola or corn oil. People used to suggest using old motor oil but that's not really good for the environment. A few drops of cooking oil is going to be a much safer alternative. You can also try a few drops of dish soap. This breaks up the surface tension of the water and keeps the mosquitoes from being able to land safely on the surface to lay eggs.
Yes, but use a DARK colored bucket. I had read that mosquitoes are attracted to darker surfaces but didn't think that was especially true. I live in Florida and I kill billions of mosquitos every year without any of that stuff. Here's how. I leave buckles out with enough water, about a gallon so the mosquitos can lay their eggs. I check them all the time since they are always in my normal travels. Once I see the larvae, I dump the bucket on my hot driveway and they die. No chemicals nor any costs and simple as heck. Why buy something to kill them in standing water to then do what? Dump the water with dead larvae? I learned that as a kid in Puerto Rico where mosquitos are year round and worse than anywhere I have had a problem by a long shot. Sitting water was everywhere and the problem is so bad you can't open your mouth to speak or eat without a bunch trying to lay eggs in your mouth. The more scarce you make them, the less food for frogs, lizards and bats so they will help minimize the mosquito population. In other words, they help get rid of the ones that you didn't get and the helpers will fight for the supply that's lower. Others come but if everyone does this everywhere, we can eradicate this problem.
One should never keep standing water. I always do & check daily. Same dump when larvae, though on my garden/plants. Mosquitoes will find standing water, I want them to find mine.

At 5:18 you say that these Mosquito Dunks kill the larvae of Mosquitoes ~& insects like mosquitoes. Which insects are you referring to when you say 'alike mosquitoes' ?
What? I don't have to buy a machine designed by the military to kill all mosquitos in 90 secs? (TH-cam ad). I will need to try this instead, great video. Thanks
A commenter on another TH-cam video suggested placing 3-4 holes around the sides of the bucket at the maximum level you want water to reach. When it rains the water will pour out the holes and never get higher than your holes. The only exception may be torrential rains that put more water in your bucket than your holes can handle.
But aren't you also diluting the water each time the water pours out? The bacteria (which is what the dunks are made of and are what is killing the mosquitos) floats on the surface, so it would seem that would pour right out of the holes.
How far do mosquitoes travel? I live in the woods and they are everywhere. I have 4 acres and I’d like to know how far from the house I should be doing these dunks?
I don't doubt this kills mosquitos but an wondering if just not having open buckets of water in the first place to draw them in would be better. I mean there is slways going to be mosquitos coming into the area.
I keep hives and I haven’t lost any bees using this method. But it hasn’t worked well for controlling mosquitoes. I’m at the point where I’m thinking of selling my hives, just so I can fog for mosquitoes. They are big and mean in my yard!
If you put the hardware clothe bee's shouldn't be able to get in,,,, besides bee's are focused on their next flower,,, and they get moisture from the flowers also,,,, bee's don't go for a bucket of water, esp with hardware cloth
I can't help hearing/visualizing the Rick & Morty episode w/ "Interdimensional Cable"... LIL BITSSSS In all seriousness tho, I will have to try this. Mosquitoes are a PITA
I'm confused. Your saying to get rid of mosquitos is to provide them more places to bread (but still die I guess)? Isn't it best to get rid of standing water that has no purpose, tires, buckets, etc., and treat the standing water with the product you are pitching that does have purpose, animal waterers, rain collection, etc?
Well if that works then sure but what if, say, your neighbor has all that stuff on the property line. Having an alternative gives you the best opportunity to deal with them.
@@anubis520 Interesting point of view, however, this mosquito trap idea will not decrease the mosquito population if there are abundant areas for the larva to grow and hatch. The best course of action in a neighborhood would be for everyone to do their due diligence in removing unnecessary standing water and then only a couple folks need to make these traps to reduce the lingering population. If a neighbor refuses, well then someone could become a criminal, trespass onto a neighbors property and drop this chemical in all the standing water by the cover of night and maybe that could help. Bottom line, a bucket of 'treated' water is not going to 'Get Rid of Mosquitos' by itself.
I've been using this for a couple of weeks but I noticed that when I look in the bucket I see lots of larvae swimming in there. That makes me wonder whether it's working or it just takes a few days to kill them
Per the packaging they are good for UNUSED swimming pools. There really is no need to put them in a maintained chlorinated swimming pool as the environment is not conducive for mosquito breeding due to the chlorine.
I see no reason that the bits would work any faster than the dunks. Same active ingredient, the dunks are just slow release. The only reason I can theorize is that the dunks may take a few days to reach steady state, but I doubt that..
The bacteria die off after 6 months. 🤔 What if we feed that bacteria what it wants like some kind of sugar. It could last as long as you take care of it.😊

@@HowToHomeDIY they must like me better 😂
@Christian-jx3nx 😂
I notice that when I put a dunk in a bucket of water the water turns murky. Are the mosquitoes still attracted to this water? Or do I have to change the water after a while?
At 5:18 you say that these Mosquito Dunks kill the larvae of Mosquitoes ~& insects like mosquitoes.
Which insects are you referring to when you say 'alike mosquitoes' ?
Can they be used when i have tadpoles ?
Will adding oil to standing water not prevent mosquitoes from using it to lay eggs?
Where's the link to that mosquito trap you made last year.. shown here in the video
Guppies works 100%
would love to know how to fight no see ums In florida
me too! Does these dunks work for no see ums? anyone know?
Cedarcide
Here in central Florida we use an old ping pong paddle
The idea that animals can drink or live in the water that these chemicals are in while not advising humans to swim in them should be a red flag.
It’s not a chemical.
What? I don't have to buy a machine designed by the military to kill all mosquitos in 90 secs? (TH-cam ad). I will need to try this instead, great video. Thanks
But youtube is the guardian of truth. It must be so if they allow it on their platform!
Real easy to make a home made umbrella to place above the bucket.
The bacteria (which is what the dunks are made of and are what is killing the mosquitos) floats on the surface, so it would seem that would pour right out of the holes.
will this kill dragonflies? we don't want to do taht
How far do mosquitoes travel? I live in the woods and they are everywhere. I have 4 acres and I’d like to know how far from the house I should be doing these dunks?
The ones that breed in water are just one kind. Some mosquitos breed in mud. What about them?
I don't doubt this kills mosquitos but an wondering if just not having open buckets of water in the first place to draw them in would be better. I mean there is slways going to be mosquitos coming into the area.
Is it safe for honey bees?
I keep hives and I haven’t lost any bees using this method. But it hasn’t worked well for controlling mosquitoes.
I’m at the point where I’m thinking of selling my hives, just so I can fog for mosquitoes.
They are big and mean in my yard!
If you put the hardware clothe bee's shouldn't be able to get in,,,, besides bee's are focused on their next flower,,, and they get moisture from the flowers also,,,, bee's don't go for a bucket of water, esp with hardware cloth
Bees do go to buckets, barrels and other water sources for water to cool the hive with.
@@JustMe-gs9xi respectfully I disagree. I can bet you do not have 🐝 Bees
Ruby red minnows also work
I can't help hearing/visualizing the Rick & Morty episode w/ "Interdimensional Cable"...
LIL BITSSSS
In all seriousness tho, I will have to try this.
@@tazmania720that’s my though as well!
question: if you find larvae in any standing water, can you just dump the water? won't that kill the 'skeeters?
@@CRV69there's stillswarrrmmyyyy hordes of them at my place ~& we don't have any standing water !??!??
I've been using this for a couple of weeks but I noticed that when I look in the bucket I see lots of larvae swimming in there. That makes me wonder whether it's working or it just takes a few days to kill them
What happens if a person forget those buckets in the forest?
Where can I get this product?
Tractor supply sells them
Great!!
Awesome
You might use black buckets because the mosquitoes like the darkness
our county mosquito control uses peanut oil in the ditches
Are they safe to use in a pool?
Per the packaging they are good for UNUSED swimming pools. There really is no need to put them in a maintained chlorinated swimming pool as the environment is not conducive for mosquito breeding due to the chlorine.
I see no reason that the bits would work any faster than the dunks. Same active ingredient, the dunks are just slow release. The only reason I can theorize is that the dunks may take a few days to reach steady state, but I doubt that..
Was the giant screw in the tree really necessary? That hanging bucket is the ugliest thing on such a nice tree..
Yup. It was.
Why do you hang the buckets off the ground?
Just so my kids don't mess with it. More effective closer to the ground.
Okay, I guess I keep missing this part, how do the mosquitoes get into the bucket if it's covered?
The holes
Dose it work with midgets (gnats) as well ?
I would like the answer to that also
The bacteria die off after 6 months. 🤔
What if we feed that bacteria what it wants like some kind of sugar. It could last as long as you take care of it.😊
I just throw a new dunk in.
Is amazon the only place to buy it..? 🤔
Lowe's has it!
Tractor supply sells it
Are they safe to use around honeybees?
Yes they are. The bacteria in the dunks don't affect bees at all.
Found 2 drowned mice so far this year using dunks.
Learning from these comments.
I liked your other build, trap thanks for making it a actual how to,not fake with stupid music, I'm in los Angeles, there's just not allot of options & I don't got patience to search on line find wiat for whatever to arrivebas u said, bait is the key, in my laundry room them bastards love my dirty construction clothes, I ripped up a sacrificed shirt, gonna put 2 traps in the garage 9ne in the yard, what was the spray u used in the other vid ive tried boric acid and a cheveron bran bug spray in la the mosquitos have goten smaller and they dont need much water the dew on leaves moisture under the washer, these tiny little suckers bite through socks and shirts, thanks again 👍
So give them extra places to lay eggs but doesnt kill the egg layer… Am I missing something? Do they only lay eggs once in one spot?
Looks like the owner of this channel was paid by the company who makes dunks to create this episode.
@NTJedi where do people get this idea? I wasn’t paid a dime and have never spoken to them.
@@HowToHomeDIY It's because you're dedicating an ENTIRE video which only promotes "only" one specific mosquito water_product the "dunks". What about all the many other water_products used to fight mosquitoes? Also you don't compare its results verses other products or other methods or even showcase the results of this one product. While you have other videos for dealing with mosquitoes this video is only instructions on how to use dunks < one specific product )
If the company which created dunks is not paying you then you've created a perfect free advertisement for only them.
@NTJedi awesome, then I created a free advertisement for them. Which I feel great about because it’s the one product that I’ve been using that I’ve seen really works. Why would I promote a bunch of other random products that I don’t know work. I want to share these things with my audience. If you don’t like how I do my videos go make your own channel. Would love to see it. All upset and accusing people of things for nothing.
@@HowToHomeDIY It's not about promoting other products which don't work as well... it's about showing fair results for the most popular products. If products X, Y and Z are 30% to 70% less effective then show everyone these results so you don't appear one-sided or bought. I've merely listed advice so your channel does not appear one-sided or bought. If you choose to spend an entire video showing only one product with ZERO comparisons then don't be upset when people accuse you of being one-sided or bought.
The equivalent of listing all reasons to purchase a 4x4 F-150 from Ford without comparing any other vehicles or manufacturers.... and then complaining when people say you're one-sided.
And what happens to squirrels, birds and other animals that try to drink from there???
Nothing
Whenever I found a puddle with mosquitoes I spray it with Raid. Works almost instantly.
I change my bird water almost daily.
Kills other non target species. Is also illegal. And is pretty lame.
Don't Poison your LAND,,, that sinks into groundwater,, Raid kills good bugs,,, Dragonflies eat mosquito's....you can't do that,,, a dog could drink from it and get really SICK!
Or you can grow lemon eucalyptus trees around your property and lemongrass around your house
Lol my wife got lemongrass and it does nothing to help. Citronella candles too same result. That natural stuff is a joke IMO
What is the reason to have the bucket off the ground?
To keep pets from drinking it.
Being a pesticide product, this WILL kill the good/helpful bugs, insects, etc. If you have a garden, pond etc. you could cause considerable more problems than you started with. Diversity is always the best policy in the garden. Plant lots of diferent species particularly flower varieties. The more good insects, birds, bats, aquatic life/fish you can attract and KEEP/SUPPORT in the area the better. You'll always find a few nasties but they'll be kept under control.
If your neighbor has standing water won’t those mosquitos just come and bite you?
So is your argument that it should be all or nothing?
I use goldfish and guppies works 100%
Use tree savers instead of drilling into a tree.
the dunks are a bad deal. Just get liquid bti, you get way more for the money and it works better.
Just what i needed, another AD!!!
? Do you want to know what works or not? Can’t make most things out of dirt.
Don't the dunks prevent them from laying too? So makes buckets pointless?
Does not prevent them from laying.
why did you drill a hole into a tree? not good practice. been using bti for years.
Adam what is your last name or how can we get a hold of you for questions? I’m trying to build a fire pit patio and need your help!!
