2011 for me was the most exciting year in Hip Hop from my generation. It had a nice blend of Mainstream and underground Hip Hop that I play till this day. Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Childish Gambino all dropped their debut albums that year...Watch the Throne was the most hyped album that year including Drake’s Take Care album
Danny Brown’s “XXX” and Shabazz Palaces “Black Up”, Kid Cudi’s best album MOTM2 are amongst my favorite experimental Hip Hop albums of all time also came out in 2011. The true emergence of Odd Future and Tyler The Creator with Goblin and A$AP Rocky with LiveLoveASAP. 2011 was an exciting year and true shift in Modern Hip Hop.

I’ll give a recent year some credit because I experienced it in real time and it ushered in a new era: 2011
TDE (Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock), Tyler the Creator (who introduced us to the rest of Odd Future), A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown, Action Bronson, Mac Miller, Childish Gambino, Lil B, SpaceGhostPurrp, Big K.R.I.T., Drake, Watch the Throne, Shabazz Palaces, Death Grips and Tech N9ne.
Take Care I still feel is Drake’s career-defining album, All 6s & 7s was Tech N9ne’s mainstream breakthrough, and Watch the Throne was simply a big deal. Otherwise, a lot of those artists started to blow up in 2011.

That's interesting, because James actually mentions TPAB in his book (where he argues how 2016 is the best year in music history) at the very start, saying that many albums were rumored to be deleayed, because they didn't want to be overshadowed by it - in turn giving the artists more time to refine their albums they've released in 2016.

The part where Myke was breaking down the difference between favorite and best confuses me... because during the Joker review on "Frames per Second" Nick said he thought Phoniex was the best Joker, but Ledger is his favorite.....and I thought it was a good answer because I felt the same way....but the rest of the cast said it didn't make sense.....or maybe I misunderstood something.

After I heard Wu Tang, I decided to start collecting hip hop cds and listen to them in my car instead of the radio. Beezy430 made a good list for 94 but Myke reaffirmed my choice with his 93 list.

It's 1988 . No year has as many seminal releases from artists that were future legends . I know it seems cliche to keep referencing '88 , but it was truly the best year of culture defining releases .
In 1988 Mike Tyson was undisputed king, and MUST SEE TV, Michael Jordan was averaging 37 points and premiered the Air Jordan 3 ( the best Jordan shoe of all time ), a black quarterback won the Superbowl . But also, crack was decimating families and neighborhoods as was the accompanying gun violence .
Rap was a savior for me and my friends in terms of following and admiring cool dudes from the hood that wouldn't lead us to jail.
It Takes a Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back by Public Enemy was a earth shattering moment .
By Any Means Necessary by BDP ? Wtf?!
Then Follow The Leader by Eric B & Rakim ? Doing Micheal Jordan shit with lyricism .
Then Eazy Duz it AND NWA Straight Outta Compton ? Come the fuck on .
Classic debuts Big Daddy Kane, Epmd, MC Lyte ( the First solo female to ever have a full length album) , Marley Marl's In Control vol. 1, the fuckin Great Adventures of Slick Rick .
    For me, it's 88, 96, 94,90, and 98 .
