This show has educated the world so much about Ireland and the Troubles. It’s been so wonderful to see the appreciation of their culture and understanding the nuance. Idk if people look more into the history beyond what the show says, but it’s worth a look. 💙
This show and The West Wing have referenced the era so much. We are reading to try and understand it better ourselves (It is absolutely not well-covered in American classrooms).
The chaos of the last few minutes of this episode is some of my favourite television of the past 10 years. Everything just goes absolutely crazy at once and it was so much fun.
Lots of great musical choices, lots of references to films of the 80’s-90’s, and continual historical references that range from heartbreaking to heartwarming. The writer of the show incorporated her own history when she wrote the show.
Love this show. I watched the first episode then pretty much binged the whole thing. It has moments of pure belly-aching comedy, and some small moments of such touching genuine emotion that they bring me to tears. It's fantastic.
Awwwwwwww hell yes. One of my favorite sitcoms in recent memory. So funny, full of heart and a little time machine for 90s nostalgia. It's a great, too short ride.
@@watchthiswithjoeandkevin6 Okay, so you saw how emotional the season one finale was. That ending really got me. This show knows how to switch gears and give you the depth of the characters.
The most important thing to know is the difference between Northern Ireland (which is part of the British Empire) and The Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is a separate country and they ARE NOT British (they fought several wars to clarify the point). Derry is in Norther Ireland (UK) on the border with (the Republic of) Ireland. There is a religious element to this divide. NI was largely Protestant, and Ireland was largely Catholic, but as you can guess it’s never as cut and dry as all that.
This is a great one. I was the same age as the girls (and James) during this time frame, but in the US. It's a nostalgic watch for me, but with a totally unique perspective. I think you guys will enjoy it.
As someone from Derry, this show holds a special place in my heart. If you ever want to know more about the history, elt me know! I can link you a few good documentaries on it
At some point J&K started going for my top five of comedy shows(Schitt's Creek, Fleabag, Ted Lasso) and when they started Marvelous Mrs. Maisel I asked myself: "imagine if they did Derry Girls too". Well...
Thank you! We have studied on this some since the pilot to gain a better understanding of the time and region. The setting is indeed vastly different than what we experience.
I just started to watch and just have to say I've been waiting for this ever since you first announced it! P.S. keep an eye on Orla. She doesn't have as many lines as some of the others but she is always doing something hilarious in the background. They don't draw attention to it so you have to look for it.
As someone who grew up in NI and went to a catholic girls school in the mid to late 90s/early noughties, it’s so accurate. The Troubles sort of happens around you, depending on where you grow up but we went through the same teenage bullshit everyone else goes through. It’s just through a slightly different lens because there are some things you can’t ignore and as much as it doesn’t impact you all the time , you’re fully aware of the way the world works for you, as an Irish Catholic in a British Unionist dominated region.
Oh I'm so excited y'all are doing this series! I fell in love with this series and it just gets better and better. I can't wait to watch this with y'all!
I really recommend reading up on the Troubles for this show. Love this show! Also for clarification, this show is in Northern Ireland, not the Republic
Just watching your intro, it’s a British show…umm well how to explain things without going through the best part of a millennia’s worth of Anglo-Irish history😂.
If you want a really good quality documentary series to educate you on the Troubles, I recommend “Spotlight on the Troubles”. It’s a BBC series, 8 parts from memory and on TH-cam. It will give you a firm grounding.
If you're looking for another underrated comedy, I would highly recommend FX's Reservation Dogs--takes funny and heartfelt to an entirely new level, especially as the show progresses. Would love to hear your thoughts on it!
The Good Friday Agreement I think ended the Troubles and they just had a 25th Anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. I am American (and a Catholic) but I follow an Irish band called Dea Matrona and I know they played at the Good Friday Agreement Anniversary event and I think it was last year. Derry Girls is a great show all the way through.
One of those rare shows you fall in love with within the first few minutes and yet it just keeps getting better and better!
Amazing characters. Such a perfect tone.
Definitely! The characters are so well-established right away that you can't help but love them.

Yes, and every beat of the chaos is laid out and earned for that great payoff.
The nun's name is Sister George Michael and she's maybe my favorite part of the show.
The farther we get into the show, the more we love her. She's so delightfully glum.
Lots of great musical choices, lots of references to films of the 80’s-90’s, and continual historical references that range from heartbreaking to heartwarming. The writer of the show incorporated her own history when she wrote the show.
The comedy is balanced so well with the darker setting of the conflict. It's great work.
Love this show. I watched the first episode then pretty much binged the whole thing. It has moments of pure belly-aching comedy, and some small moments of such touching genuine emotion that they bring me to tears. It's fantastic.
This show balances the humor and the touching moments so well.

It really has been a wonderful show so far.
@@watchthiswithjoeandkevin6 what episode are you up to?
We just watched Season 2 premier today.

Thank you! The show handles the messiness of this period so well.
“The Troubles” formally ended with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998
This show is set in the 90s.
Yay, Derry Girls. Thank you for reacting to it. It's fun to relive the comedy of the show in the eyes of new viewers. Love your reaction by the way. 😍

Well...
It's kizmit!
Love that you guys are doing this! It gets better with every season
they don't go to a private school, it's not like america, state schools have uniforms and Catholic schools tend t be free
Thank you! We have studied on this some since the pilot to gain a better understanding of the time and region. The setting is indeed vastly different than what we experience.
I can't believe I had missed that you are watching Derry Girls now!! One of my favorite shows, hope you like it as well :)
I just started to watch and just have to say I've been waiting for this ever since you first announced it!

As we move through the episodes, the layers of this show continue to amaze.

Great show, both from a comedy and historical viewpoint.
The uniqueness of the time and place of the setting really add a great richness to this show.
Great reaction. Hope you enjoy Derry girls. It is very accurate to what it was like to go to a Catholic girls school in Northern Ireland at the time.
I really recommend reading up on the Troubles for this show. Love this show! Also for clarification, this show is in Northern Ireland, not the Republic
We definitely have since we started watching.
Just watching your intro, it’s a British show…umm well how to explain things without going through the best part of a millennia’s worth of Anglo-Irish history😂.
It is definitely a period of world history that does not receive enough attention in American schools. We are studying up!
one of my absolute favoriteee shows!!
you Would think james will be the group's wildcard, but it's orla 😂
If you want a really good quality documentary series to educate you on the Troubles, I recommend “Spotlight on the Troubles”.

This is actually one of my favorite show on Netflix ❤
Great reaction........ Also, I "THANK GOD" ... Never went to a Public School. ... ha ha
“Killing nuns now is it?”
“I didn’t Daddy!”
My second favorite serie in all my life.
The PERFECT comedy show.
It really is. It just balances so much perfectly.
Discovered you while searching for Derry Girls,I'll stay for Ted Lasso, Fleabag, and Schitts creek and prob more.
Welcome! Glad you're here!
If you're looking for another underrated comedy, I would highly recommend FX's Reservation Dogs--takes funny and heartfelt to an entirely new level, especially as the show progresses. Would love to hear your thoughts on it!
This show is great! My family knows when I've been watching Derry Girls because I say "shite" a lot.
I am legitimately concerned I am going to start referring to attractive people "total rides."
Love this show!!
As are we!
I love derry girls. Season 3 is the best.
1:40 i truly fucking beg ye to stop calling us British
"I think its a British show" this show is great comedy...but might also be an education for you too

Too fast, we need see more of the video
Sorry, they are really touchy on how much of this show we use. We have had to do multiple edits on the first 4 to get past the copyright block.
Irish show ;)
