SISTER MICHAEL IS OUR LADY AND SAVIOUR
She’s fantastic!!
Amen praise sister Mary Micheal. 🤣😍
@@Budgies00001 spoiler alert:
Her name is George Micheal.
Oops I'm Irish I get a pass 🤣
Amen
I met someone from Derry and she said that the show Derry girls changed the way people see Northern Ireland. P.s. Derry has a huge mural of the girls in the town
That’s so cool
that's so cool, i didn't know that!
I added it to my travel wish list after that show ❤
@@magivasileva7153don’t go there if you’re not white !
What people the southern republican Irish? Because we see them just the same 😂
Joe putting his hand on Gerry's shoulder always brings a wee tear to my eye - as much as they bicker, they are family and comfort each other in hard times. I also love the juxtaposition of the girls having fun and the adults finding out horrible news. They do something similar in the next season when the girls are fighting and the adults are reacting to happy news.
It’s so powerful
I loved the way they portrayed Erin's reaction to Claire coming out. It was relatable to me. Often people are on board with a sort of distant idea of gay rights instead of *truly* supporting gay people, and when one of their loved ones come out, they act like complete morons. As a lesbian, I remember some of my straight friends hugging me less and stuff after I came out in high school, because they thought I was/would become interested in them... Losing a lot of that casual physical affection a lot of girl friendships have was really painful to me. These were all friends who said they supported LGBT+ rights too.
On a lighter note, I loved your reaction!! Comedy shows don't usually hit the spot for me but I love Derry Girls. I especially adore the exaggerated facial expressions, particularly on Erin 😭😭
Yepp, As a gay man I know how that feels, and it’s sucks. We both loved how supportive everyone was if Claire even if it was an awkward start haha such a great show!
I just loved how Claire didn't back down even when Erin started acting like a moron - I always thought she looked really pretty in that scene, she seemed happy in a way that was giving a glow to her - and I loved her response to Erin's "You fancy girls?" "Well that's sort of an entry level requirement. "
I’m from Northern Ireland and I’m glad you liked the show! The show is so relatable to growing up here, we all know a Colm and had a teacher like Sister Michael. Can’t wait for season 2!
😂😂 that’s awesome
I'm from Wexford county in Ireland, and my cousin who is an asthmatic had blue and brown inhalers, or "puffers" as she called them, in the 90's.
Thank you lol
Called puffers in Australia too, and also had the blue one in the 90s 😁
I’ve had red, blue and white inhailers… 05 baby tho
Apparently there's someone like Uncle Colm in every family in Ireland, both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
If not in your family certainly someone you know haha
@@laurajaynenolan2149Or maybe if you don't think you have a Colm then you are... the Colm😮
one of my favourite oneliners (that I didn't even catch my first time(s) watching) is "you can't be wasting esther's time like that" when Erin says she will call childline. it implies that she *has indeed done that before* and maybe esther even complained about it xD absolutely brilliant
My sister is asthmatic and from what I remember she's always had a blue inhaler (and the brown round preventer too) so the show is correct. The US caught on after us with that one 😂🤙
Edit: and yes, it was the 90s she's had her inhalers since.
Lol I guess I’m trippin
I had the blue inhaler as a child in the 90s as well lol (Australia)
My brother had asthma growing up in the 1970s and the inhaler was blue 😊😊😊😊 ( from the UK)
my mum also had a blue inhaler (Germany)
I remember having the blue inhalers around 1996, but I also remember white ones & a friend had a burgundy one in ~'98/'99 which I think was a steroid / preventer inhaler. (Also Australia)
* I can remember being jealous that my friend's one was a different colour to everyone else's. 😅
Nicola Coughlan in Derry Girls is the main reason I then watched Bridgerton. I live in Australia not Ireland but I was a teenager in the early 90's and distinctly remember regularly hearing about The Troubles on the news.
Did you guys realize there are 2 bridgerton connections in this. Besides Nicola, the guy who plays Ciaran (the photo guy) was Berbrook in season 1and in season 2 of Derry Girls one of the boys erin has a crush on is Theo from season 2 of bridgerton
We noticed later haha yea
I RECOGNIZED NIGEL BERBROOKE AND THEOOO OMG. i loVED theo!!! nigel appalled me sm, i cudnt forget him even if i tried hahah
Thank you!! I couldn't quite work out why Ciaran/Berbrook were so familiar!
That's crazy! The Bridgerton x Derry Girls crossover ❤
Martin Scorsese loves this show as well. I think Sister Michaels is his favourite character.
I just discovered DG a week ago. Binged it. It's one of the best things I've ever seen. My teens and I laughed so hard and learned much.
We’re so glad it got recommended!
My moms family is from/lived in Kerry, Ireland. Such a good modern Irish comedy about an important time & i know many irish people are pleased this show exists. Yall are one of my fav reaction channels but it also just makes me so happy to watch Non Irish American people watch and enjoy this show as much as me & my mom do :)
It’s so good!! 🥰🥰
fun little fact, for the rest of the show all of friend group wears rainbow pins in support of clare
I love this show so much. I studied aboard in Derry in ‘06 where I studied the conflict. But this show just nails that town. I don’t know how to explain it. But I just love it so so much
They always find a way to make people laugh or smile and thats why the pink popcast is one of the best podcast
🥰🥰
I see a lot of people mentioned about the inhalers but just so as you know it was a channel 4 production in the uk, Netflix have it now, but channel 4 made it if you’re throwing anything at makers 😂
Derry Girls is set exactly when I grew up and it’s epic in both the nostalgic sense as well as the comedy. The fears that were around in ‘the troubles’ were just starting to hit us as we were hitting our teens.
SO GLAD YOURE WATCHING THIS SHOW ITS ONE OF MY FAVORITES
The ending just hits you so hard
Yepp
I'm so excited y'all are watching Derry Girls. It's one of the best sitcoms ever!!!
I'm so excited that you're watching this. I love Derry Girls. OMG Rizzo's laugh is one of my favourite things - such a good full body laugh. ❤
Thanks 😁😁
why does the last episode always make me cry
It’s so sweet 🥲
my sister and i will randomly quote this all the time, especially the "i hope its not the gay thing" scene
😂😂
The awesome thing about you posting it so much later to TH-cam is I forgot your reactions when I first watched it on Patreon 😄
Hahah it all worked out I guess
TLDR: This show has my entire heart.
I see the mural in Derry often and I've always been in awe of it. Its beautiful and it reminds me of my childhood and of hope. The show's finale holds a really special place in my heart. This is my home and it is the home of the people I love, and the people I will meet or never meet. The faces painted on that mural represent not only the comfort the show brought millions, but of the thousands of childhoods experienced or cut short during the troubles; the childhood memories that couldn't be recreated in a script. It would be incredibly difficult to travel to a town in the north without finding a monument or mural dedicated to the victims of a bombing or shooting where you're stood. There is so much anger, darkness and grief associated with this time, but this show depicted a side to real experiences that reminded us that joy and love continued on in the face of it because it had to. These were children raised in an adults' war just like the conflicts that are still occurring across the globe. The humility of the characters is supposed to highlight the absurdity of the situation whilst comforting us that we are largely removed from it - a privilege others do not have.
Rizzo throttling Benji was not something I expected from this video but it was fucking hilarious 😂
😂😂
I loved almost everything abt derry girls. The characters r so near n dear to my heart and i recognize a few faces from Bridgerton too:)). I've never rewatched a show 3 times consecutively omg.
Does anyone have other shows to recommend? I loved season 3 too, the prom flashbacks of the adults, the cast of the younger versions of the adults absolutely killed it. Young Mary and Michelle were hilarious lmao😭
Derry Girls is my favorite show ever and it deserves way more attention than it’s ever gotten.
I love that show so much, cannot wait to see the reactions to the other seasons ❤❤❤
Idk about Ireland but we def had blue inhalers in Canada in the 90s
Thanks 🙏
The wee lesbian!! OMG I love this show!! YAAASSSS!!
😂😂 we love their use of “wee”
@@PinkPopcast truly iconic
Derry Girls is such an amazing show!!
Nice touch - the 'Come Out Ye Black And Tans' song in the intro.
"I was born in a Dublin Street
Where the loyal drums do beat
And the loving English Feet
They walked all over us
And every single night
When me dad would come home tight
He'd invite the neighbours outside
With this chorus:
Come out Ye Black and Tans
Come out and fight me like a man
Show your wife how you won medals
Down in Flanders
Tell them how the IRA
Made you run like hell away
From the green and lovely land of Killeshandra
Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man,
Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders,
Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away
From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra.
Come tell us how you slew them poor Arabs two by two,
Like the Zulus they had spears and bows and arrows,
How you bravely faced each one with your 16-pounder gun,
And you frightened them poor natives to their marrow.
Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man,
Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders,
Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away
From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra.
Come let us hear you tell how you slandered great Parnell,
When you thought him well and truly persecuted,
Where are the sneers and jeers that you bravely let us hear
When our heroes of '16 were executed?
Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man,
Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders,
Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away
From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra.
Well the day is coming fast and the time is here at last,
When each yeoman will be cut aside before us,
And if there be a need, sure me kids would sing, "Godspeed,"
With a verse or two of singing this fine chorus
Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man,
Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders,
Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away
From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra."
The alternative final lyrics are:
"Oh, come out you British Huns, come out and fight without your guns
Show your wife how you won medals up in Derry
You murdered sixteen men and you'll do the same again
So get out of here and take your bloody army
[Outro]
Come out you Black and Tans,
Come out and fight me like a man
Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders
Tell her how the IRA made you run like hell away,
From the green and lovely lakes of Killeshandra"
Loved the reaction, guys. I'm Canadian and asthmatic since 1976 and I remember the Ventolin inhaler always being blue. Over the decades I have been on many different inhalers, in many different colours so...anything is possible.🤷♀️
Oh good Lord, I’m watching this on July 12th and almost had a heart attack seeing the Orange March. Oof. Scary memories of childhood. Great show, a bit too familiar, at times. So very well done. And, yes, there is so much you are missing.
I'm so happy youre finally watching Derry Girls!
This vid is my (current) comfort, fall asleep vid. Kinda like Call Me By Your Name is for Benji. I probably make up 20% of the views at this point 😂
😂😂 we love to hear it 🙌
S2 will be out soon!!
@@PinkPopcast y'all are the best! Thank you always for the content you provide us Popstars!
Forgive me the opportunity to rant about Irish history - I feel it's not discussed much and this brought it out in me. As much as there is no "good" guy or "bad" guy in any civil situation like this - I wish people really were taught the history of Ireland, so they understand the context when the Troubles and other issues with the British vs. Irish narrative.
For example, the myth of the Irish potato famine and how it was actually the British exporting all of the Irish crops (crops they grew) and leaving them to rely on potatoes - so when that crop started failing - the already starving Irish died (about 1 million deaths.)
Britain banned Catholics (basically native Irish versus British-ancestral-Irish who were Protestant ) from public office and the legal profession. They limited Catholics' opportunities for education and for practicing their religion, and banned their language. And again, the religious element is explicitly tied to the British vs. Irish background.
We can point to violence on both sides but we had imperial violence used on civilians frequently, the "Black and Tan" mercenaries were especially vicious (named that because they wore dark tunics, caps and khaki army trousers), etc.
Like any resistance against a colonizing force - it got complicated when the colonizers immeshed in the community. If generations of people are born in Ireland from a colonizers, that doesn't make those children any less Irish or worthy or harassment. There is no longer an "invader" but a "neighbor"
But clearly, the situation is not as shallow as many who don't know the history. It's not JUST that one religion likes the Virgin Mary more than the other but it is kind of funny to pretend that's what it is all about sometimes.
In Sinéad O’Connor's (RIP) song Famine, she discusses how the systematic erasure of Irish history has damaged the Irish psyche and caused so much generational trauma.
"There has to be remembering and then grieving
So that there then can be forgiving
There has to be knowledge and understanding"
She said that there could be neighborly love but she stood by that everyone has to embrace what happened. I've been thinking about that a lot lately whenever someone tries to silence those who want to discuss history and systemic oppression.
We always appreciate an educational rant, thank you!
Omg I’m so glad y’all did this. I had an Irish guest this week and we were talking about the girl from Bridgerton and he told me I gotta watch Derry girls so I watched a funniest of video and yeah. Totally my cup of tea. But I won’t watch the show. I’m just gonna watch your reacts cuz that’ll be even better 🤗 Love y’all!
We’re Mary and Jerry and we’re living in Derry! 😂
😂
Man I love Derry Girls, this was such a joy to watch.. can't wait to see you guys react to Season 2!
this show was AMAZINGGGGG...the actress who played Orla was incredible!
One of my favorite shows its always being me happiness
☺️☺️
All the girls is this were based off a mix of real people (lots of people) the writers also asked people for events happened in their lives and small details to make sure it felt right, its easier to get the big picture view but harder to get the person to person view. I grew up in the 90s was born in 91 I remember alot... of stuff going on (I live in the Republic) but had family all over the country I remember stuff on the news that was insane... not many people my age or a little under remember my family watched every little detail so I got alot of it in that way. But grew up with people like these girls as well more so in my teen years its funny now I can see their faces sometimes when I watch or listen to this show. Also I got my girlfriend to watch the show and she loves it more than me she loves it and is balling her eyes out laughing every single time she is Brazilian.
Sorry Benji, 90's Irish girl here who had a blue and a brown inhaler!
😂 IDK I feel like everybody’s listing different colors and saying it’s the same lol
This is a brilliant show and I loved this reaction 💚💚
Love Derry Girls so glad the reaction is finally on you tube
fun fact the school scenes were all filmed in my school
Awesome!!
That last part always makes me cry. And the whole lesbian conversation makes me laugh so hard specifically Claire's lines 😭
YOU HAVE TO WATCH RED WHITE AND ROYAL BLUE LIKE YESTERDAY
I'm northern Irish and my mum was born into the troubles in 1975
My mum was from Derry so I spent my summer holidays between there and Donegal in the 80’s and 90’’s. Luckily as a wee limey I had a far better experience than James did 😉
The UK has had those colour inhalers since the 80's at least. I'm pretty sure the colours are standard in a lot of countries, so I think America just joined the standard.
I feel like it varies by brand, so maybe it’s a Newer brand to America
You guys ❤❤ thank you for posting this on TH-cam. This is my favorite show after Community.
Our pleasure!
The reason why they can't over look the English thing is because the English took over Ireland, that's why we speak English and Northern Ireland exists
You guys should check out London Irish! There was only one short series...hilarious! You'll recognise a few faces from derry girls too 👀
Love your reactions and this show is the perfect choice for y'all
Apparently seeing armed English soldiers every couple of streets and the car or bus you're in being stopped to be searched for IRA (or possibly UDA) men or for explosives is much easier to get used to then you'd think.
Netflix didnt create derry girls it was chanel 4
Ciaran is Nigel Berbrooke from Bridgerton season 1
You can’t help but feel bad for Gerry the only normal member of the family
lol
The longer you watch, the more you understand why they believe the girls offed the nun 😆
😅😅
first seconds in hearing come out ye black and tans made me smile
That scene with Claire tattle tailing on Michelle, is my favorite
😆
really loved your reaction to the show

Orla is gonna do what Orla wants to do! They rule!😂
i was 9 years old when Omagh was announced and ill never g]forget it
im southeast asian and my inhalers are either blue or white so it's definitely valid!
Im from Derry, an Michelle is 100% the most accurate Derry girl lol an she is actually a real Derry girl too
It about the tumblers in the Northern Ireland 🇮🇪
It's pretty funny to watch you two reacting to stuff to do with the troubles with no idea what's going on. Also slightly depressing seeing as Bill Clinton was directly involved in ending the troubles so I dunno, maybe I expect Americans to know a little bit about it maybe. (he kind of shows up in the last series btw). Also I can confirm there were blue and grey inhalers for ventolin and becotide.
I love this show, hope y’all continue with it
AC in Ireland??? Not a chance!!!
can't wait for more
Y'all need to watch "But I'm A Cheerleader" you'd love it

Orla is definitely my favourite, she's an absolute legend. But, as someone from Derry, Michelle is the most accurate Derry Girl.
Nice!! Haha we loved orla too
Same she is both an idiot and amazing ha
I'm from Galway, and Michelle was accurate for me in the 90s lol. Cross border Michelleness
I grew up in the 90's in Norway, and I definitely knew several Michelles.
To be fair Michelle is from Derry
derry girls is literally one of my favorite shows ever and seeing Nicola Coughlan go from Clare to Penelope Featherington was the cutest transition between my two fave shows
And back again.
definitely think it’s got a claim as one of best comedy series in recent years if not forever. Excellently written and i think anyone who grown up in a Catholic/Celtic household can relate
Me too as a person from Galway. Go Nicola!
Agreed!!!
I live in Northern Ireland and work in the film industry and this is one of our proudest masterpieces (besides maybe game of thrones at titanic studios in Belfast). These women are so talented and their accents are on POINT, which is very difficult to achieve. They also raise so much awareness on the political issues that unfortunately still prevail over here, but they do it in a very clever, hilarious, disarming way.
So happy you guys reacted to this, I never clicked so fast on a video in my life 😂 ❤

It's definitely severely underrated in North America so you are absolutely right! It's not nearly as well-known as it should be.
@@natatatt thank you after 10 months I still think about this comment lmao
As a teen in 90s England, I'm now appalled at how we weren't taught about what was happening just across the sea. Derry Girls S1 is brilliant, for the comedy of course but also those sudden hard-hitting moments that remind you what was reality for everyone.
How where you not taught? I was teen in England in 90s and was fully aware, especially as troubles were also in England...kids from a local school to me in England were killed in IRA bombing, so really hit hard and then after affects like every bin was then sealed up for years because of worries of more bombing
I mean it was the English governments fault so they didn’t like to shout about it 🤷🏻♀️
As a teen who grew up in Belfast in the 90’s during that era i can honestly say I wouldn’t change my teenage life. It was hard and scary but…….that was our world. Oh, and we definitely had blue NHS inhalers 😂
@@nico_penI'm Irish but live in the UK. There's not many people where I live that know what really went on back then in NI, or the effect the UK actually had on Ireland and it's culture. It's just not taught here.

Something to watch as you move forward is how the kids are reflections of their parents (or in James’ case, how he mirrors Gerry) the generational themes in this show are sooooo well done.
Derry Girls hit the ground running from the first episode and never looked back. 18 episodes in total and each one a gem.
In the original Orla's step aerobics routine was set to Like A Prayer, that's why she waits so long to start (it's that "ooohh" intro bit before it starts "life is a mystery")! I think they had to change it for licensing purposes
That would’ve been a great song choice
I absolutely love Derry Girls. Every time I watch this show I always make sure to watch Orla because she's almost always doing something strange. She's most definitely my favorite character
Haha I need to watch again and focus on her
@@PinkPopcast yeah there’s compilations you can watch online after watching the show that are titled things like Orla doing random things in the background for 5 minutes or James noticing the weird things Orlas doing in the background for 3 minutes 😂

Such a good show, I just finished the last season and it a so well done the whole show. I coulda watched these girls in a million more situations but they way they ended it right at them turning 18 was so good and so purposeful to show how quick that part of your life is.
Agreed, we could’ve washed so much more of these girls, but they ended it in a great place
