The real Dracula is a Romanian hero, named Vlad Tepes, whom was a war hero when fighting off the Turks. Although he was an excessively cruel man, also known as Vlad the impaler, he was also fighting for the protection of his people. The man in Romania is considered a hero for protecting them. However, the legend did grow that he was a vampire, which was a common belief in that region during his era, partially due to his notoriety on how cruel he was. Vlad Dracula Tepes became immortalized by the horror book Bram Stoker's Dracula, which was based off of him, but was a fictional work. That portrayed him as a vampire, obviously. What it looks like Universal Pictures is doing is combining the two Dracula's, the reality and the fiction to create a story on the emergence of Vlad Tepes becoming a vampire. If done right, I personally think it could be genius.

@@waldi7080 Vlad II, also known as Vlad the Impaler (in Romanian: Vlad Țepeș or Cepes or Cepelus 'the Impaler'), (Sighișoara, November 8, 1431 - Bucharest, December 14, 1476) was the Voivode of Wallachia in 1448, from 1456 to 1462, and in 1476 (for about a month). He gained notoriety for his extreme cruelty during his reign. As a ruler, he pursued a policy independent of the Ottoman Empire and fought against Ottoman expansion. For this reason, in Romania, Vlad III is regarded as the protector of Wallachia. Name The name Drǎculea, Vlad's Romanian given name, is derived from his father's name, Dracul. In modern Romanian, dracul means 'devil,' but in Vlad's time, it also meant 'dragon' and 'demon.' The name Dracul originally referred to the Order of the Dragon, as the word dragon in Latin is draco. His epithet, Țepeș or Cepes (meaning 'the Impaler' in Hungarian), is associated with his preferred method of execution, impalement. The Ottomans knew him as Kazıklı Bey, which means 'the Impaler Prince.' Vlad was referred to as Dracul in several contemporary writings, such as the records of the Transylvanian Saxons and the chronicle of Jan Długosz. "... his stature is not tall, but very muscular and strong, outwardly cruel and fearsome, with a rather large, aquiline nose and wide nostrils, his face thin and pale, long eyelashes surrounding his wide-open blue eyes, his black and thick eyebrows making his gaze threatening. Apart from his mustache, his face and chin were shaved. His prominent forehead bones increased the size of his head. His high nape was connected to his wide shoulders by a neck resembling that of a bull, on which black, curly hair locks fell.(...)" - Papal Envoy of Pope Pius II, 1462

Universal Studios initially had plans , but after the Dracula reboot and Tom Cruise's Mummy reboot underperformed at box office , the scrapped the idea as per reports . They would still however continue telling such stories as standalone films .

A lot of people are spoiled by Twilight forgetting that a Vampire is suppose to be a creature born out of a nightmare, not some sparkling emo-teenager who is perfect in every way. Vampirism is a curse not a gift, when Dracula says there are fates far worse then death in the 1931 film, he means being a Vampire is a fate far worse then death.
ComocosonoEWL depends. The first vampires ever portrayed were creatures of darkness with strenght of few humans that could live forever and manipulate minds to some degree. Nothing more. In Brams Stoker novel he died after running away from few normal people. That is how strong he was... the greatest vampire that ever existed died to some tradesmans and guy that studied him for a bit. And that is closest to true vampire as you can get since it's from novel that started this whole fascination.

One of the few that tell of his origins rather than a story of him getting resurrected in the present-day/future or rather than another retelling of the original novel? I dig it more. 3. One that may portray him as Vlad Tepes, The Impaler whom he is likely based off of rather than as something random like Judas Iscariot or some Sumerian demon? Digging it further. 4. Dominic Cooper? The digging increases. 5. Luke Evans? Digging so hard right now. 6. No sparkling? The digging has not ceased. 7. That scene at the end with the bats? Sold.

I am Romanian, from Transylvania and this comment is special for the turks. A lot of turks commented at this movie that is not fair historic. I thought is a joke these kind of comments but you guys keep saying that thing. Who said this movie is historical or bibliography movie? In your minds Dracula was real? :)) Why you attack so much this movie? Some parts are real, like he had battles against your ancestors, he killed a lot of turks and wanted to protect his country. " Sometimes the world doesn't need another hero, sometimes what it needs is a monster" this quote fits perfectly with this Dracula and the real one (Vlad Tepes) because like this one Vlad was seen a monster abroad because he was cruel with liars, thieves and the enemies of his country. He didn't show mercy and because of this methods was seen as a monster. In the time he was the leader of the country people in Wallachia were afraid to steal or to do something bad, because the justice in those time come with imapaled.
ButterflyBeeFanChannel 2015 I'm just joking. And a sequel is never a guarantee, unless the movies are filmed back to back. No need to get your panties in a twist. Also... interesting name.
ButterflyBeeFanChannel 2015 I get it. Still, I found it quite amusing that Charles Dance got the last line, and that line was "Let them Games begin." The fact that he was out of makeup and was the spitting image of his character on Game of Thrones, as opposed to the Nosferatu-looking character from before, did not help matters.
They will be a sequel kinda. Universal what they are doing are rebooting the monster films they have and Dracula untold is the starting point like iron man was for mcu and man of steel of dceu. Next year the mummy reboot will be out with Tom cruise but it's in the same timeline as Dracula untold. Rumors is dr Frankenstein will be in mummy as a cameo (note all modern so current age dr Frankenstein) and later a creature of the black lagoon film is planned. Eventually they plan to make the iconic characters Dracula, Frankenstein and probably wolfman meet up in a team up film in the future.
Seriously, people in the comments ranting about historical accuracy need to chillax - this is a fictional movie, not a history documentary - being a movie means it will undoubtedly be embellished with inaccuracies and things will be changed to suit whatever dramatic story they want to tell, being a fictional story doesn't limit it to only history - so if you are busy for historical accuracy, go watch documentaries, not movies
the issue i personally take with the movie (and many others might do as well) is that it doesn't stay true to what Dracula is, and whom he was based upon, and it strays from the actual origins of Dracula (as he is a fictional character, simply based upon Vlad Tepes, so he does have confirmed origins), and many people likely wanted a movie that sticks to that, Dracula isn't supposed to be a form of anti hero or protagonist, he was designed to be an antagonist, and personally i think they could have a much more interesting movie concept where say, for once the antagonist wins, or have the movie cover how Dracula rose to power and then end with his death at the hands of Van Helsing (or his enslavement to the Helsing family, if you want to go off the Hellsing anime timeline)
quite frankly, I really doubt most of the movie going general audience really cares - no one came out and said specifically that this movie was suppose to be accurate or based on history - yeah it's Dracula Untold and yeah it's playing him as anti-hero but again, i really doubt most people came to see this movie for anything other than drama and sword fighting and vampire stuff - i don't think they came to see specific themes - i don't think this movie was made for anything more than another dramatic retelling/reimagination of the same dracula tale
Eldrad Ulthran its called Dracula Untold for a reason. Grab some popcorn and enjoy the flick for what it is rather than how you want it to be. When you make a cool looking Dracula movie with your vision, I'll enjoy that too.
It is a damn shame that this did not end up with 10 sequels because I would have loved it. This really is one of the best damn vampire movies ever made and really needs sequels since we didn't even get to see him show off all his powers.
"We need someone that is brave enough to fight and destroy Dracula!" A man gets up from his chair. "Fine, I'll do it! Geez, so pushy. It's not like you've ever killed a vampire before," said Simon Belmont. This movie looks cool and it reminds me a lot of Castlevania.
I love this movie so much. Rewatched it twice the other day. It's such a cool concept, a cool new story rather than "Dracula"being remade for a tenth time. We have some cool new powers in terms of Dracula(I absolutely LOVE the way he turns into a bat cloud to get around)and his bat army was awesome as well. The ending scene practically made me drool with how amazing it was. If I was to compare it, I'd say it's like making a hero film, but with a monster in place of a superhero. 10/10 for this one.
SAME. Lmao I think the movie is kinda mid. Like an instant classic I can forgive the silly stuff in. Like any great classic. But the trailer? Is fucking FIRE.
See a lot of whiners complaining about him being a Hero. He was and is a hero to a lot of people. However I think this movie has more of "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" kinda deal going on.
God damn this is a great movie. I just watched it for the second time. Easily the best vampire movie I have ever seen. I can not wait for the second one. They could not have found a better person to play Vlad. I just might watch it again tomorrow hahahaha.
This movie looks pretty bad to me...check out 'Interview with a Vampire' if you're into vampire films, though it's far more existential, and that doesn't seem up your alley..
Cameron Lao-gosney I've seen it. Quite a few times actually. It's really damn good. The acting is quite dated but that is to be expected. It is probably one of the best vampire movies around. But it is not nearly on the same level as this movie. This is a much darker version of a vampire than Interview.
By far my all time favorite Dracula movie! When you can feel for the "villian" and understand his motives in a strangely honoring way THAT is a good story. 😉 I would become a "monster" to save MY people.
The movie was awesome! Totally loved Luke Evans in it! Couldn't choose a better person to play Vlad! And to those people who are saying this isn't the actual part of the history, please go and get a book to read those stuff.Because this is a movie! Okay? Not a history documentary..
7 YEARS LATER AND IT STILL DESERVES A SEQUEL!! PLEASE UNIVERSAL. WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS MOVIE. GIVE IT THE SEQUEL IT DESERVES 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
If "The Mummy" gets the Shared Universal Monsters franchise going finally, it'd be interesting if when Dracula appears, the go ahead and just bring back Luke Evans.

This is actually somewhat historically accurate. The man that the vampire Dracula was based off of was Vlad the Impaler--a ruler in what is now Romania. His name is mostly known for his ruthless and brutal oppression of his people, obviously impalement as well as other unspeakable acts of cruelty. That being said, he was in fact instrumental in keeping in check the power of the Turks in Europe. I'd imagine the "sultan" that they mentioned in the trailer is referring to the ruler of the Ottoman empire--whom i'm assuming will be the main antagonist in the story. At least this might shed (some sort) of light on Vlad's achievements in the wider scope of European history...
While I'm not going to get my hopes too terribly high, I am somewhat interested as to whether they will have the... individual he went to be Kain or if they are going to do something else.
Also, when he was young, his father sent him and his brother to the Ottomans as hostages where they spent most of their lives. In the meantime Vlad managed to learn a lot about Ottoman culture and Islam in general his brother even converted to Islam after a few years.
Also, and it's been a long time... Isn't this Dracula's back story in the Bram Stoker novel? Looks like they're mixing it with the sort of historical version to make something semi realistic that sets up the Stoker version, kind of bridging all the mythologies.
Dracula was certain not a nice person. However, he was also a product of his time where rulers were often ruthless and cruel as par for the course, Christian, Muslim or otherwise. He suffered terrible abuse as a child, protected his lands from foreign invaders, fought his own brother who joined with his enemies, and brought a level of political stability to a very fractured Kingdom. He was also of course, also a ruthless killer, vindictive and rightly feared. So yes, it is nice to give some depth to his depiction in film other than just a maniac. He was human after all.
Just goes to show you, "Angels", "Demons", "Good and Evil" are all just a point of view, and don't actually exist within a person, place or thing. "Angels" are a fictional manifestation of "Pure good" and "Demons" are a fictional manifestation of "Pure Evil" Neither of which really exist. This movie captures that, you do what you need to do, to protect the things you love, and people will view it how they want, but it really all comes down to doing what is needed to survive. It's like he says in the trailer, "You think you are alive because you can fight? You are alive because of what I did to save you."

The name Drǎculea, Vlad's Romanian given name, is derived from his father's name, Dracul.
His high nape was connected to his wide shoulders by a neck resembling that of a bull, on which black, curly hair locks fell.(...)"

Cheese4G 100
And that is closest to true vampire as you can get since it's from novel that started this whole fascination.
snakes3425 Twilight was made for little girls that could pretend they are main heroine since she was as bland and idiotic as they are. Nobody else was attracted by it, and yet you need urge to make yourself better creating some elitism. Sure dude.

Hm....This is how I reacted to the trailer, in this very order.
1. One of the few (if any) non-comedy films with Dracula being a tragic hero type of protagonist? I dig it.
Sold.
Also, did I see Paul Giamatti somewhere in this trailer?

+nickelback 101 the sequel will be based on lords of shadows 2

The legend of the vampire came from him eating bread soaked in his enemy's blood.
1 of the best movies ive seen!
It's like he says in the trailer,
"You think you are alive because you can fight? You are alive because of what I did to save you."
