- geeks.pirillo.com / - I was invited to join the USS Nimitz crew this past week. They allowed me to sit in "Vulture's Row" and record this experience. Words can't describe how awesome it was to watch the full orchestration of this take-off.
I used a go.tagjag.com/vado to record.
Thanks Chris! I love the sound of freedom.
@amberts thanks for all the guys on these carriers making the world a safer place..from uk
It's called a blast shield, it deflects heat and such from the engines of the F-18s I think it also has some other ways to help the take off as well
My Husband was on this ship. He was the guys in the "Red" outfits. Im so proud of him. :)
@baron494 It's called an E-2C Hawkeye. The Navy's version of the Airforce's E-3 Sentry. Both serve the role of AWACS or airborne warning and control system. They have a large rotating radar on the aft dorsal part of the fuselage that can detect aircraft in all 360 degrees of direction.
Completely agree! One famous phrase to sum it up...'special relationship'
During the early 80s, there was a movie The Final Countdown... I think it was shot aboard this carrier, if I'm not mistaken.
Its amazing how they launch and land the aircraft. I became a fan after watching that movie, heh
@powerfulmoster123 now the nimitz is wat the world must call a gargantuan masterpiece!
14 years active duty US Navy Aviation Ordnancemen 1st class and I soooo miss the flight deck.
@goruu the thing of it is, that ship would have all the time in the world to prepare for an attack, its called RADAR, and it streches for hundreds of miles... not to mention aircraft carriers never travel alone, always part of a battle group that also have attack powers... air land or sea...
@topwing93 The JSF will have a longer service life, is capable to be upgraded in the future just like the F-18 has, got a reduced radar signature, got better agility and is capable of doing a better job. The latest versions of the F-18 are right behind it, but in about ten years time when serious upgrades begin appearing for the JSF, the F-18 will be left behind.
@TheFireFox2000
Those are called "final checkers" they are doing a last look inspection prior to launch.
I saw a documentary on the 2003 war, I don't really remember well but the F-22 keeps popping up in my head.
I miss that ship, I miss all the carriers I was on
I love this ships. I always wanted to work on one of this as crew member :).
Deflects the Jet Blast. As you might have caught at the end of the clip. Another F/A-18 was in line, next to launch.
Sweet video - thanks for uploading!
nice, crystal clear
@LastXdeth No but they have p-3's which have the same engine as the c-130's they hunt submarines
this is the best..... that power
that takes a long time !!
I would love to join the airforce after i graduate highschool and do this...
That's cool and all, but I used to work around the "Lockheed SR-71 Blackbirds", if you want to see something really cool watch one of those take off, and at night it's really bitchin'!
@jfu12450 Well the nimitz's deck is probably cleaned when shes in her home port the planes look clean because they're doing maintenance on them a lot.
I love how the USA doesn't fuck around when it comes to war.
Awesome!
Here in the UK we have this type of ship but we do not have any of those things landing and taking off .Can we borrow some?. Shocking isn`t it
that was so cool
The carrier just doesn't seem the same without the mighty Tomcat.
@combat236 Yeah true that, although I'm only an ADF member, not American, I believe anyone who is aspiring for a position in any military unit, shouldn't look past some tertiary education. It helps in so many ways, among obvious education, things such as professionalism, personal development, maturity....
@l3attlel2oyal
because the su33 has thrust vectoring
Hey Chris,
did you eat at the mess-decks or officers quarter?
Highway to the DANGER ZOOOOONNNNEEEEEE!!!!
Yeah, it's nuclear. If you've ever seen the show "Carrier" its a documentary about the carrier and the crew for one deployment.
It's from the steam catapult.
Awsome!
because its Personal !
That took a long time, if an enemy attacks, 2-4 minutes isn't enough to prepare 1 or 3 aircrafts to fly.
When are they going to start using LIM or LSM motors?
thanks
such good quality and its not even HD
@Bartney1994 oo pre nasa manila bay pa yata
sweet a super aircraft carrier
good. both friends.
@OlderG0ds
correction, Sadam kept his power... even worse.
@spunkyduck555 American debt is quite manageable and small compared to many many countries in the Euro union and Japan. on a per-capita basis and overall basis as well.
Chris I was on the Nimitz back in 1978-'81. It was nice seeing flight ops again. I used to work on the flight deck myself. Brought back many good memories. Thanks so much for sharing!
Yep, its the best there is for that kind og thing, but as far as i know they are working on some kind of magnetic rail system, but for now..steam!
@Kid574 Thankyou :)
@mankyman6 yes it upsets me you pay for these manificent ships to protect us all ..i think there one of the seven wonders of the world..im proud just to watch them
i love you. u dont get this alot.
But we still have the most powerful military in the world.
@PSG1JOHN1 They're right, it is too expensive. We have enough problems keeping these aircraft going without spending money on a supersized carrier. There wouldn't be any flyable jets for it if we had no money to fix anything, lol.
@renegadebiker24 um... he's not dead.
yes and no. They could hit one if they wanted, but the carrier would have a couple of hornets up before it got close enough. They also wouldnt be able to sink it without doing another pass, and by that time someone would be after them
3:34 shake your tail feather!
i would probably scream while landing XD
implying that either one of those entities couldn't slaughter Iran on it's own?
@MrKatzengreis napalm is not a war crime. i don't think germans are the people to be reminding me
Steam; the cat that launches the plane is steam powered. Too big for a rubber band I guess lol...
and looked what had happened to their leader. Down in the bottom of the ocean.
heading there next month and I'll be wearing a green shirt, cannot wait to get flight deck qualed and be up there experiencing this!!!
I've met and known several flight deck crew over the years, but this video is interesting to actually see the full process of launching the F-18s.
thanks for posting
Was on USS Nimitz in 1992! Go for it man, exhilarating at first, but starts to suck after a month, and then, only 5 more months to go!!!! YAY!!!! Hope you like Chili-mac. Honestly though, Its fuckin awesome seeing the planes take off, and especially land!
I was on the USS Nimitz during Westpac '93 as part of VF24 Fighting Renegades. I was a "turd" aka plane captain with my old F-14 squadron. It was something else to be a part of Flight Ops, and even saw flight ops at night, and I remember how I had a top rack in the 99 man berthing and when I was off duty, the sounds of the aircraft landing on the deck was something that would put me to sleep. LOL
+renegadebiker24 - Oh wow!
Chris Pirillo Yep, that is what life was like for me on that ship during WestPac '93. :)
Nice, and thanks for sharing the video. Thought you may not be allowed to show things like this?
Nathan
I have an odd request after seeing this video. I am a former sailor of this ship as part of Carrier Air Wing 9, and that is I would like to give my oldest cat who was named after the man this ship was named after, to scatter his ashes at sea off this ship. It would mean a lot to me if that were to happen. His name was Nimitz, and he can be seen on video at my profile page at the end of the video titled "Close up view of Midway" I wonder if that would be possible. What do u all think??
JUST GOT A CALL WE DEPLOYING AGAIN GOO NAVY!!!!
Ahhhhh, Flight Ops, I remember this from Westpac '93. It is awesome to watch them take off and land. I was a part of VF-24 Fighting Renegades.
i know these are F/A 18 Hornets but there was a guy who commented asking if the F/A 22 Raptor was in service yet. BTW these are lovely planes
It's not smoke, it's Steam. Some of the steam created by the Nuclear Reactor is used to charge the ship's catapults that launch the fighters. The "shuttle" rides in that groove that you see billowing the steam. The plane's engines are brought-up to full-power (hence the blast deflectors being raised on the deck of the carrier), and the catapult's shuttle pulls the plane forward, bringing it from zero to 160knots in 2 seconds.
Great video Chris, good quality picture. I bet you were like a kid on a school field trip, must have been really exciting :)
i thought the F/A 22 raptor was already in service, there are plenty of videos aint there or are they test flights?
Does the Navy have any heavies like the C-130. I know the Marines got a few, but does the Navy itself have some?
no you dont iv been in the navy for a little while and you dont want to be the guys in red at all hell you dont want to be on a flight deck at all try a technical job like FC fire controlman or ET electronics technichan
@spartan5536 Thanks. It was sad to have him be put to sleep. He was suffering so much. He will be missed.
@itom95 : The superhornet is still phasing in I seriously doubt they'll get rid of it that soon. If they do get rid of all the F/A hornets at least the E/A hornet will still be around ;)
You, me, nobody knows that for sure because the US never had to fight against modern China, Europe or a coalition force of other countries and I hope we never will. The US employs its military the most, yes. But that's not the same as having the most powerfull military. The US has the strongest navy, sure. How many carriers is it? 11? Thats impressive. So many ships (including destroyers, cruisers, frigats and submarines.) But that doesn't mean its immediately the most powerfull military.
I am a former Navy crew member on board the carrier USS Saratoga CV-60 the Sara's gfone now but I still have an understanding of the life that carrier sailors go through, things were not always pretty, but I had an experience that the average civilian would never get in their lives, I am proud to have served in the navy, alot of guys regret it and hated it but I am proud of my service to the navy and to my country.
@Haloplaya2332 The USS Hornet sunk on 27 Oct. 1942 by aircraft during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands; the USS Lexington sunk on 8 May 1942 by carrier aircraft during the Battle of the Coral Sea; the USS Princeton sunk on 24 Oct. 1944 by carrier based aircraft during the Battle of Leyte Gulf; the USS Wasp sunk on 15 Sept. 1942 by Jap. sub I-19 while escorting transports to Guadalcanal; the USS Yorktown sunk on 7 June 1942 by Jap. sub I-168, following being damaged at the Battle of Midway.
@topwing93 I'm not, the test flights performance tests have been widely publicised because there is so much at stake on this programme. It's a better design and as such, is more agile. They are able to compute pretty accurately nowadays on computer what a plane will fly like before it's even built. There's always going to be a few surprises when the final product is made because a computer is only as good as the person who operates it, but generally, you can get good enough figures.
My dad was on the USS Texas number 39 he was a engine man. There where some smokers that wouldn't stop smoking everyone was suffering. My dad asked them to smoke on the deck, they said no you ****. He asked them again, they said no. So hepulled out the 160 PSI fire hose and sprayed them to the walls. The next day, the Bridge Operator asked him to come to the bridge, He asked with a grin why did you spray them? My dad said they where smoking. The bridge operator said don't do it again. True story
@cfs3mytube wow. nice answer. so true in every way. couldn't agree more. But I would still think twice about the a missle getting through EVEN though it could happen. there will not be a aircraft carrier without its protection. plus think of the first plane they send out before they send the jets. The plane with its own radar. because of that plane I think it is harder to get to an carrier then before.
The American War of Independence, the War of 1812, World War 2 before America intervened.
I suppose I should have been more specific. My point was more that the UK and Austrailian Military get things done "better".
This is patently untrue. Any one with any common sense can tell you that if you want a war over quick fast and in a hurry, you want the American military. it's simply the best there is.
u know there's another way for using the body of an F-22, Lockheed and Boeing could use other cheaper equipment, I've seen Boeing strip down aircraft before. It's such a loss to stop the production of a work of art like the Raptor :( at least keep the body lol... someone should email Obama (i'm not encouraging war here, but we have to be prepared for an "Independence Day" movie scenario :P
last time i checked, i was told that the F-22s have hit service a looong time ago... i've heard that the F-22s were the first to drop bombs when the Iraq war started... please check after me though... I also heard that the production of F-22s has stopped... by congress maybe. (remember that's what I heard, i'm waiting for someone in the air force to confirm it)
PS: My friends call me Raptor
Im an aussie also and i think the US has the best Air Force and Navy. Soon i hope to move to the US and work on one of these babies or as a Aircraft Technician for the USAF
Ummm....140 to 160knots is not = Speed of Sound. The stuff coming off of the wings is just simple condensation boiling-off from the low-pressure regions of the plane.
True - but isn't it funny that when the US has a distaster...like Katrina...that we don't see ships & assistance coming in from other nations in levels that the US sends?
It's a shame us brits don't have many aircraft carriers. Especially since we had such a major air force in the second world war through to the cold war and when it came to the gulf and the middle east it was mostly scrapped. Stupid if you ask me but hey. Still get to watch these beautiful F18 Hit the catapult.
@jackpwnage117 @jackpwnage117 ah yes, nato milirary has succesfully killed both these leaders. Well actualy only 1 since saddam was sentenced to death by iraqi people. But is alquida defeated? Does iraq have a new STABLE government? Both aanswers are: no. The nato leaders say so themselves as does the us military itself. That still is no victory. Not yet
@topwing93 I agree the cuts are hitting the Armed Forces too much. 8% might be in line with other cuts but it's costing our security. The F-35 will be a good aircraft when it comes into service, and a lot of British manufacturers are helping to design, engineer and produce it, so at least that's something. I'd rather take that than buying an aircraft off the shelf.
@dopenhagen2009 Every nation is corrupt in some way, its comes from the basic human factor sadly, in todays society and current human level or evolution. But i am not sure if you can blame an entire nation where the corruption naturally is far more complex due to its magnitude and reach. But war is wrong ofcourse, just a waste of resources and lives.
Took my ASVAB a couple weeks ago, got an 84. My line scores auto-qualified me to be a nuclear engineer on board of one of these carriers, and I'm going into the Navy under that premise as soon as I graduate, I'll be officially in the DEP in about a week I hope. Wish me luck, these things are such incredible pieces of machinery.
So freaking badass
That's what's it like to be in the navy, according to when my dad was in the navy 20 years ago. My dad was just in a submarine going sneak attacks on the enemie.
@TheJesseMD it depends. in real life Combat lets get them off the Ship a Super Carrier can launch planes very fast.my Father when he was on Carriers before going Naval Spec ops they launched 40 Aircraft in under 8 mins. and that was on a Essex class Carrier.
@iColorado303
I think you're wrong !
Full throttle means Full AB too and not every launch they are Full AB.
I read (don't remember where) that most of cat.launches are on Full military power (no AB) if catapult can provide 100% of its power.
(sorry for any english error)
@Bidil6 yea but it's almost impossible to sink a carrier did you saw the goalkeeper on a british carrier? That's a fully auto machine gun that shoots everything down. They can rotate 360° and each british carrier has 3 of them and rockets and planes. So good luck if you want to sink one.
awesome right/? - Pantholder0
Oh hell yeah especially when F-14's take off. Although when nothing is going on, calm seas and the moon is full. You can see the stars and moon so clear out there. I worked mainly at night on there, preferred it, let those b@tchs on day shift roast on the flight deck.
