    Many thanks to all the USN Sailors- past, present & future. If you want to see everything that happens on a carrier check out this well done video from 1988 of a 3 day Tiger Cruise (it's 5 parts!). It's dated (aircraft, uniforms, civilian's hair : -) but impressively complete down to greasing the arresting wire.

    My first carrier was the Connie. We did a dependence day cruise. Put on a little air show for the families. An F-4 was going to do a high speed fly by at flight deck level. Aircraft was about 500 feet off the port side at flight deck level. When they throttled up for the fly by the aircraft exploded and fell into the sea in 2 pieces. Aircrews family was on the flight deck watching. We lost TEN guys on that deployment. Lost one to a drug overdose in Hong Kong, one to heart attack at age 22 and one to alcohol poisoning. The rest were NORMAL flight deck/naval aviation operations. Flight deck is not a very safe place to work.

    If the Air Wing isn't embarked at the time then having hundreds of people along the side of the flight deck isn't a problem the pair of E/F Super Hornets F/A-18's were most likely from an air wing that was operating from their shore base, and while flight ops are indeed dangerous it is vital to show the American people how are carriers and their respective air wing operates!

    • @markwest4996
      @markwest4996  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They've been doing it for decades. Haven't heard of a mass casualty yet :-) I served on a carrier and the most common injury was head and calf injuries (damn knee knockers). We all face far greater risk driving. You can't see it, but no civilians were allowed aft of a certain point. They know what they're doing :-)

    • @mjmondary1
      @mjmondary1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I served on a carrier for 5 years and I can tell you that our ship would never have allowed crowds of people up on the deck during flight ops. We would launch,get the folks up for the show,and then get them below decks for recovery.

    • @usnavypalawanhunter5737
      @usnavypalawanhunter5737 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I served aboard the flight deck of the USS Midway in the 80s. Arresting cables can break anywhere, including at the point where they emerge onto the flight deck, and fly forward. So much for that civilian crowd alongside that island. Not to mention a ramp strike or landing gear collapse, which could send the airplane or its wreckage right into that crowd, let alone the fire and the flaming spray of aviation fuel that could follow. Now I get it that Mark West never saw anyone die on his carrier, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. West was lucky, because I did on mine. And before anyone doubts the competency of the Midway sailors, it should be noted that the USS Midway, being the only forward-deployed carrier, was the most experienced and active one in the fleet during her time. I am all for Tiger Cruises, God knows we did enough of them during my time. But we never, NEVER, allowed any civilians or unqualified personnel on the flight deck during any kind of flight ops, even for demonstration purposes. The Midway did have a large vulture's row, and there the crowd stayed. Because we knew that any goodwill and public relations those Tiger Cruises created could instantly be negated by just one child falling overboard, let alone a mass civilian casualty event, and how the American press and public would skewer the US Navy for killing innocent lives. And if you think the media is gonna care that those civilians signed waivers, think again. Finally, I too take risks every time I drive my car---but I don't use it as an excuse to deliberately look down the barrel of a loaded and cocked gun.

      Don't believe me? Google Image "Ramp Strike on USS Midway" by an A-7 Corsair and TH-cam "T-2 Crash Lex VT-19. " Note that these planes or their wreckage crashed alongside the island where, if it had been the Roosevelt, a large civilian crowd would have been. Now the deaths and injuries that would be caused by fire and flaming wreckage is bad enough, but what does a large, untrained civilian crowd do when disaster strikes? That's right, they PANIC and STAMPEDE for the exits. This is bad enough on land, but imagine this scenario aboard the confined spaces, steep ladders and exposed catwalks of an aircraft carrier! People could actually fall overboard, or get crushed in those narrow passageways. Knee-knockers would be the least of their worries.
      But Mark West hasn't heard of a mass casualty yet. I suspect he'll hear about it one of these days, if the Navy keeps on doing this.
