Slide-out Truck Storage Box - How to Make a Vehicle Storage System

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 13 ก.พ. 2021
  • Today I'm building a slide-out truck storage box for the area under the rear seat of my truck (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 2500). In the video I'll show how I built the framework to fit in the under seat space, installed drawer slides, added handles and locking hardware, trimmed with aluminum, and tour what I will be storing in the box for general and emergency vehicle use.
    And while I built this storage system for a truck, the general techniques can be applied to any vehicle. A little organization will not only keep your vehicle more tidy, but also enable you to keep some road side emergency supplies available in the event that you need them!
    Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions!
    -Joe

    Awesome build idea. I don't have a truck with 4 door but when I do this will be a great addition that's fun to build. The metal trim makes it look bough not built.

    I used to attend several conferences each year for work and at each one I would get a soft-sided 'briefcase'. I had about 10 or so of these and used some of them to store 'necessaries' for all our cars. Basic first aid, fuses for each car, multi-screwdriver, pliers, adjustable wrench, small knife, paracord, jumper cables, zip ties, small can WD40, gorilla tape, old bathroom rug for putting on ground and a few other things. Nothing really cost that much except I did get higher grade jumper cables. The bags fit nicely in the trunk and because they were soft-sided, they didn't roll or slide at all and were very portable. There were some other small things but I always felt that no matter what might happen, there was something that could help.

    I have a feeling you made this because, like myself, you found it expensive to buy under seat storage. It seems whenever we can build something it’s cheaper, far more heavy duty, and meets our needs with little to no wasted space. Great build! You’ve successfully inspired me to build one myself

    Nice Work! I think Trucks like this should have come with storage like this from the factory!
    Little Improvement idea: line the inside with some vehicle carpet and since the rest of the truck floor is a rubber, maybe put a coat of bedliner or something on the outside! It would make it look more stealth and with the carpet you wouldn't have to worry about something rattling around.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I think the liner would be a nice touch. Or maybe a gray paint...haha.... I love my gray. As for the carpet... I do plan to put some of the foam liners in the bottom to help with rattling. 😀👍

    With the draw slides, you might like to think about changing out the nuts for the slide to what are known as nutserts or rivnuts, you can then cut your machine screws down so they don't protrude from the nut giving you a minor amount more room and less chance of taking skin off when you reach in

      Thanks! Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it.... of course if I had the space I’d probably end up putting way too much in there. So the limited space is probably a good thing in the end 😂👍

    Cool. Good use of space. I'm wondering why you didn't make it more stealth. Make it blend with the interior of your truck w either paint or cheap carpet or both so it doesn't catch one's eye as soon as you open the door. As always, you do quality work 👍👍👍

    I am amazed at how talented you are! In all my youtube viewings, you are the first , that I remember, to mention a right angle drill. You KNOW I must have one (or two, because often I buy in pairs)!! haha I enjoy your presentations!!

      @homesteadonomics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much Jimmy! 😀🙏 But you gotta remember that I just get to cut out all of the mistakes I make in the editing process 😂. And yes, right angle drills aren’t something we think of until we need them!!

    Great video Joe, as always! You should check out the DiamondBack truck cover. I know it's expensive, but it's sooo dang versatile and useful! It's like having a weather tight truck bed with a flat bed on top!

    Awesome work! I’ve been looking forward to this build, and was not disappointed. You may consider making a spot for your lug-specific socket next to your impact wrench for quick access. I will definitely consider some of these ideas for my F150! Cheers!

    Very cool storage , I have been looking for an idea for my F-150 , it looks like my 2010 F-150 has more leg room but not the area behind ware your storage box is at . Thanks for the ideas

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yep, the leg room isn’t all that huge in this seat area.... kinda odd that it has all that weird space behind the seat area😂

    Great job, I just wished my truck’s (2014 Toyota Tacoma and 1993 Subaru Sambar) had room for more storage options but it doesn’t. Maybe it’s time to get a new used truck so I can make one of these and thanks for sharing.

    • @homesteadonomics

    I cut aluminum on my table saw all of the time. Most people freak out when they see me do it for the first time. I cut up to 1/2" thick plate on it.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, many people just assume metal wouldn’t be able to be cut. But the softness of aluminum works quite well with wood blades😀👍
