I have the ECM-B1M and it’s great too. I do like the idea of an even smaller microphone tho. The best parts of these mics are no cables and auto levels.
I almost bought that mic but decided to keep my ECM-B1M….love no cables, but more than that…..the auto mode just makes it so easy! In the studio I use an ntg5 into the K3M with that auto mode…just so easy! Great video! The M1 was a fun mic
Fun fact, they also just released a RODE WIRELESS GO PRO competitor as well! Once again, plugs into the MIS, but then gives you a TX module to toss on talent or yourself when you need it. Yes the price is higher in comparison, and you probably get less stuff than the RODE Pro kit, but again, MIS compatible. Which is huuuuge.
Is the Sony ECM-M1 good for weddings or should I look for something else? I liked the unidirectional part in the religious part and omnidirectional in the hall where I can't always put an external recorder...
Thanks David... put the phone down and just listened to hear a difference... they sounded so similar... I would imagine the whole rig is so much lighter... way to go for the non pro...
Yeah, I think that's probably the case. Like I mentioned at the end, the NTG is doing less digital processing on board and for professional applications, you pretty much want your camera and mic doing as little processing as possible so you can control everything in post
So that small mic can only be used on specific equipment as the cameras has to be able to communicate with it were the bigger wired mic works with a wider scope of cameras...
Funny, I have the Rode NTG and it intimidates people on my gear but alas I can record externally. So I bought ECM-M1 on EBay it is waiting for me when I get back to California. Funny, your review is the same reason I bought the ECM-M1 :-) Will the Sony survive my 64 db Philippines air conditioner with that low cut filter?
The m1 is awesome! In my video on it I have to say that the noise cancellation switch works but sounds awful. Definitely would do that in post for sure. When the mic goes into front and rear it does sound a bit more digital but is works well. If you want all the polar options this mic is great, if you want a slightly better sound then the B1M is the mic to go for. Both are great though
How does it compare to the ECM-B1M in audio quality? The M1's got some bad reviews on the audio department, although it's a new item. I guess the market for this is the family vlog where you don't want to mic up 4-6 people and kids with individual Rode wireless units, but don't want a huge and complicated shotgun, either. If you're a one-man show, it's better to have a lav, and if you shoot events professionally, it's not versatile enough.
But now I would worried about how durable the hot shoe on my camera an the feet of the mic are. I would like they still inculde the 3.5mm option for analog. But since as you said it might be doing every trick digitally, the 3.5mm analog way might not work.
It feels pretty solid and I beat the heck out of my gear and it's been fine so far. I think the mic would break though before it damaged your hotshoe. Of the two, the mic seems like the weaker point. I'm thinking you drop the camera on it's head and that mic goes first
I was rocking the NTG3 for awhile, but having to go through a recorder to my a7siii. Now I'm back to the VideMic NTG for a-roll because it's just so small and easy to use. Still love the thing, just don't want to walk around with the beast anymore! Hahaha!
Great job on the video David! Thanks for making it. The smart money says you ordered an a6700, or it COULD be an A7CR, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the new Nikon Z F.
Presumably this is only usable with Sony cameras, correct? I have the R8 and am pondering one of the wireless packages (Rode/DJI/Newer, etc.) for reasonably-priced solid audio - but I was VERY impressed with the Sony's quality. I know the R8 has a digital hot-shoe, but knowing Canon, there seems like a snowball's chance in hell that it's compatible with Sony, lol. Great stuff!
I bought this mic because of every review & I must be using it wrong & it’s driving me crazy. There’s always a slight echo & it sounds like I’m recording internally. But every single video i see of it has crisp audio 😫
The speed of sound is roughly at 13,000 inches per second. If it's sampling audio at 48,000 sample per second that means that even though those two microphone next to each other are only 1 inch apart, it can tell it a sound reached one before the other. That is, a right sound would be recorded by the right microphone 3 samples before the left. Therefore, the computer in the microphone can figure out where sound is coming from and, like you said, digitally pick out which signal to use. The multiple mics would also help with noise cancellation. That technology is the future. Early days. Because of their distance to the subject, I don't believe either mic is good unless last resort. Better to boom or use a lav. By your priorities, I believe the Rode is Ebay bound ;)
It also records 4ch audio. 2 Main that follow the dial and 2 more as backup. Channel 3 and 4 are omnidirectional with channel 4 being -20 dB.
I have the ECM-B1M and it’s great too. I do like the idea of an even smaller microphone tho. The best parts of these mics are no cables and auto levels.
Both super useful! The no batteries thing is big for me since I've been charging mics for the past many years🙌

Hola te funciono el m1? O te decidiste por otro modelo? No se cual comprar y lo necesito para lo mismo que tu
De momento no he comprado nada, pero probablemente compraré el Sony ECM-B1M.@@gabrielbasurto124

You will like using the ECM-M1 with your new a6700 ! Nice small kit.
Dude, the M1 sounds so good!
Crazy how good considering the size! The whole no batteries, no cables, and adjustable polar patter thing has me sold!
It's a good mic for vlogging, but only for vlogging. Rode NTG is more versatile in many situations. Also, it sounds much better

Sony sounds great , would like to see how well it works in windier conditions tho 👍
Solid idea for a test. I'll head to the beach!

What dose the LC button do?
@@lewcehjitl3282 it puts a high pass or cuts the low frequencies from the microphone. Basically everything below 80Hz gets cut
I'm using the ecm-b1m and the sound is good, but their kind of "shock mount" is horrendous
You sounded always like Kermit the Frog when you say - ‘here!’

1:57 you cut how awkward it is to put these sony hot shoe mics on and off.
Would you grab a canon eos r5 camera to do a 4K and an 8K video difference and a GoPro hero 12 black 5.3K quality test?
Is that audible rumble on the ECM1 handling noise (like the major failure of the ECB1M) or is it wind noise?
Magnificent video David. That new mic certainly looks like it ticks all the boxes.
but what mic are you using for your a-roll? ;)

I subscribed to your channel today bro. U have quality content.
Both mics sound great. The Sony has so many extras.
Exactly my take away. The Sony mic sounds awesome, no batteries, no cables, and I can control my polar pattern?! Easy sell for me
Does it work with action cameras too?
I think you ordered an Alpha 7CR.

That’s not so much a fault of Canon but that Sony have their own proprietary hot shoe format though!
Did you buy a Sony a7cii?
Can any one recommend the best mode of this microphone for a loud environment with live music?
OMG you are going with NIKON!!!!! lol
How did you know?!
@@DavidManningvlog Everyone knows...the future of Photography and Video is Nikon...
Did you order the new Blackmagic 6k?
Nooooope! Still in the Sony world👍
Fx3?

Maybe do some post processing?
Are you distorting the audio in post?
Nope, both audios are straight out of camera
Must be my AirPods. I hear distortion.
Nice video but way too expensive for me.
I take it this is only for a Sony camera???
Is there any other omni directional on camera microphones too ??
Can anyone tell me please . . .
Be nice if it actually worked with Sony handycams, Sony really need to fix that.
The new a7c?
I have the b10 and love it
The rejected zones sounded terribly digitally distorted. Great review, now I know not to buy the ECM-M1.

thats literaly what i sayed in last video comments
Wow I'm early, and that seems so expensive.
Expensive for sure, but has the features to back it up
Enjoy the 6700
Cuts off high frequencies.
Only useful if using with a Sony camera. Rode far more versatile
Correct👍
Noise cricket 🦗 💥 🤣🤣
Yeah but it only works good on Sony cameras. That's the problem for me. =O(
I know it's cute, but stop petting the mic
nice try, but the noises you put on NTG are not real. 🍺
Both audio straight out of camera🍺
David, lately you are making me spend too much money.
DO NOT BUY IT! It can only be used at an arms lenght. Otherwise it sounds like shit.
sony not good. just get a rode GO
Paid review
I wish. Sony doesn't even let reviewers keep products. Bought this from B&H my friend
