Thanks for the explanation of this microphone! I wanted to brush it off when I first saw it...but I kept coming back to look at it. Not having any cables?! THAT is the biggest thing that attracts me!!!
I missed the boat on this mic when I purchased a Sony A7RIV system. It was in stock then, but I wasn't really shooting video, so I passed on it. I regretted that a year later...and poof...they were gone...out of stock. I got lucky 9 months ago when one in mint condition popped up on KEH for 319. I jumped on it without hesitation...and it's been so nice to use. Like you said...set it and forget it. The sound is very clean.
Great video, as usual! 👏😎 I literally ordered the ECM-B10 yesterday 😅 I wasn’t sure if I should get the B1M, but for more difficult places, I’m using a proper long shotgun.
Great presentation of this mic. Not getting it because I'm saving up for the FX-3, whohoooo, but also because I already have a VideoMic NTG that I looove. You're the master of pin-pointing the possible issues and the real life examples are top notch. Oh, did I just notice the big 34" curved LG monitor in... vertical mode? Great solution for a long script I guess..
Ahh yes…the big beautiful monitor fell and broke immediately after filming this video. There’s a whole thing about it on my other channel 🤦🏻♂️ But yes, save for the FX3! That audio handle is so fantastic.
I haven't tried that one, but the reviews are great for it. From what I understand, this one has a bit more reach, so that's why I wanted it for my needs.
Sony really does some great stuff with audio. I forget that they've been making audio gear for more than half a century at this point, so they know what they're doing 👍
Hmm, that sounds like there must be an issue of some kind. I've been able to be quite active with mine and it doesn't have any issues like that, so especially on a gimbal, it should be dead silent.
I got dizzy a couple times. Yay Roadcaster Pro is mounted now. No Drums 😮, but impressed by the lack of echo on the MKH 50, demonstrated by cut over to the Sony in the same space.
Both mics should be compatible with the a6600 as long as you set the mic's Digital/Analog switch to analog. I haven't used the B10 myself, but from all the reviews I've seen it sounds every bit as good as the B1M 👍
At the time I wanted more reach, which the B1M is supposed to have. Although in all the reviews I've seen since, I haven't really heard a difference to be honest.
The Sony microphone looks good, but I am always nervous about using anything but a lav mic. I exclusively use those for audio because I can move around so freely with them and I usually only need my voice for videos. Also let's me get away with far less sound treatment for rooms indoors. For important videos, I combine the the Zoom F2 BT with the Zoom lav that came with it and sync it to the camera audio. If I am far away from the camera, I hide the Wireless Go + Go lav somewhere on my body for syncing and as a backup microphone. For less important videos, I just use the Wireless Go + lav mic and feed the audio directly into my camera. I noticed that the audio from the Zoom audio recorder is a lot crisper and cleaner. I don't know if it the Wireless Go or the camera degrades the audio, but the difference is like day and night. It's good enough for a simple live stream, but I would never use it for more professional work now that I know how good the F2 is.
Definitely a great option. I really need to work on my lab mic skills. I feel like I always position them or set them wrong and end up with bad results.
@@tombuck I am far from being an expert myself. I just tape them against the inside of my t-shirt at about chest height and in combination with the F2, there is very little that can go wrong. During one of my videos both me whispering as well as the ear-deafening roar of jet engines were perfectly recorded. 32 bit audio is convenient.
The extra 100 gets you a multi shoe mic and a completely wireless and battery less solution for on the go shooters. I’ve had the cheaper version of the Sony, however I’ve switched to a cheap movo for now that I’m testing out and had the wire. I think it’s time to save up for the Sony. For me I have many mics and boomed them everywhere, but really want something that I can throw on the camera and go.
I don't think Great Sensitivity went with the Great Power statement! 😆 but hey we got 2 jokes in by the 2 minute mark so I'll take it!! 😎👍🏽 Good breakdown Tee Bee...
As far as I'm aware (and I could be wrong), the adding a mic to the hot shoe totally disables the built in jack- this is why the XLR handles/adapters also have a 3.5mm input.
Great video Tom, I love these Sony mics just for no wires and batteries! I just got the new ECM-B10 and its brilliant! What is it with Sony and their names though! 😂

Great overview! That answered a lot of my questions around the B1M (e.g. auto level, battery drain on the camera, etc.). It's tough to beat the value and versatility of the VideoMic NTG (that's been my go-to), but the Sony looks like a great option.
Hey Tom, I’m looking for a professional sounding mic that can do 2 things. Be in-camera for a doc setup and be used for indoor interviews boomed over the talent. Would this be the mic I’m looking for or do you have another recommendation?
I don't think this would be a good choice since it HAS to be on the camera to function. I'd definitely recommend checking out the Rode Videomic NTG, which is super versatile and works great as a boom mic too.
So I've been using a gopro to film our rock band and the high SPL's just wreck the gopro's mic. I've been relying on an old Zoom H2N for room audio and mixing it with the sound from the mixer to get a somewhat decent result but the Zoom is starting to act flaky so I grabbed the Sennheiser MKE440 stereo mic and the results are great but all you get is a 3 way toggle switch for the levels so it's still hit or miss. I've finally caved and ordered a Sony AX43A to use as the main band camera and am also considering grabbing this mic to go with it but wondering if it's really worth that investment if I already have the Sennheiser? With the Sony's ability to set mic level and monitor the input levels on the screen, that seems like it would be easy to keep an eye on that during sound check and adjust the gain in the camera accordingly and that would be fine but with batteries, a cable and somewhat large footprint, the B1M is still a consideration but don't know if it does improve the sound, will it improve ENOUGH to make it worth the price tag?
I love my B1M but it’s not usable for waking as there’s a bumping sound it creates. For that I grab my Deity D3 Pro. But the B1M is so easy and I just leave it on auto most of the time. It’s just so easy.
@@tombuck thank you Tom, do you have this rig shown in any of the videos? I could not find it on your channel. I'm trying to understand how you have the monitor positioned as it would probably have to be off to the side?
Hey Tom, another great in depth video. Thank you for that. I NOTED your NOTEPAD 😃and it looks amazing. Do you have your script on that? Can you please make a video of your notepad? What brand it is! and how you use it for your videos? Thanks in advance
Thank you Omid! The Notepad is just the Apple Notes app. It has a great checklist feature that's perfect for bullet points, and I really like that it moves between computer/phone/iPad. 👍
The new one is a bit smaller, so it doesn't have the same reach. Kind of like the Videomic Go vs. Videomic NTG. I definitely want as much reach as possible with a mic 👍
Hi Tom, just picked up the B1M, but see there is a newer model, the M1, have you tried it yet and if so do you rate the new 8 pattern function? Thank you.
I haven't used the M1, but from what I understand it is a bit different from the B1M (not so much a replacement as an alternative). If you primarily need directional audio in front of the camera, tbe B1M is a champ!
Hey Tom! Have you found ever found a way to record audio to both the camera and the computer at the same time using the rode ntg? Whenever I connect the NTG to usb c it makes the other output really distorted and basically just computer noises. Not sure if this is an issue with my setup or just not possible with these mics
How about Sennheiser MKE 440 compare to these? I plan to use them for headshot, environment, and I hope I can use the mic to experiment and record singing and instrutments too. Can I use these Sony mics on non Sony camera? I plan to get the Sennheiser MKE 440 on a camcorder I plan to buy too, Panasonic HC-X1500, the camcorder has an optional grip with LED and 2 XLR input, that Sennheiser MKE 440 seem like one of its kind and better stand standard shotgun mic, do you think so and if so, does thee grip still necessary because it going to be bulky and it mainly is to attach a standard shotgun mic and does the XLR going to provide noticeable better than. The 3.5mm jack input mics? And also us 32 bits record necessary over 24 or 16 bits?
It reminds me of autofocus in cameras. I learned NEVER to use it for video, but then over time it got really good and I had to learn that it was actually a usable tool.
hey there...I got the FX30 and I love it. I didn't get the XLR handle for now but plugging in my Rode Micro into the camera gives me good audio. For interviews I use a Sennheiser wireless into the mini mic plug and it's ok. But during wedding receptions I want to capture more ominidirectional audio-the music and the atmosphere. Using the micro is ok but if I turn the camera away from the DJ's speakers I lose some of the sound's vitality I think...I guess I need a mic that has directional and also allows for ominidirectional recording..this one seems to do it...I would use it exclusively with my Sony FX30...is this the best solution for my situation? The price is a bit high for me ...does the B10 also has an ominidirectional pattern setting? Thanks
B10 is the same as B1M. The main diffrence is that there is more reach with the B1M. There is more capsule on this mic. I saw a video on wedding gig with the B10 and it sound great.
Still banging the drum for the Rode SVMX. #stereogang Regarding the B1, I just wish they made it more low profile. The notion of using my MI shoe has always intrigued me for cable management reasons. If only it weren't so tall!
I think the "tallness" of the mic is due to the shock mount. I'd like it to be a little more low profile too, but I guess I'd rather have the stability. It's still quite compact overall, thankfully.
Help. Could you and Heather do a 2 person interview with this mic from say 5-10 feet so we hear it? I debated using this mic (if you can find one) for two person trade show interviews. My Saraminic Blink is a PITA to set up! This would be a killer answer.
I’m sure that’ll happen in time, but for now check out this video from Peter: th-cam.com/video/4sVYy0Z7ee0/w-d-xo.html Skip to the 3 minute mark to hear two people talking. This is the only mic he uses, so check out some of his other videos too. 👍
@@tombuck very helpful, thank you and grateful you responding so quickly. I have a ZVe10 with digial shoe mount. I wonder if there is tradeshow background noise vs in studio if it would work ok? Your db setting explanation leads me to believe it's possible. Of course I could use Rode or Saramonic wireless but such a PITA to set up, especially when you are asking to do an interview with another person and time is limited with them.
I don't think so! It won't reject as much noise because of the added distance, but it's definitely usable. Check out any of Peter Lindgren's videos from the past 2 years where he's doing a talking head segment- this is the only mic he uses and the audio sounds great.
I just did a very important recording yesterday and decided to start arranging and editing the footage today, only to find that there is NO SOUND AT ALL The rode NTG WAS plugged in... just not all the way. Hi, Thank you for video. Do you think when we use the ECM-B10 microphone on camera sony alpha ,we can connect headphones to the sony camera to have audio feedback?
Hello. I need some info, please. Can i rely on the Auto sound setting, on Sony Alpha Series, paired with the Sony ECM-B10/B1M microphone mounted on the digital hot shoe? Can i get worriless good quality sound? I usually shoot on various and rapidly changing scenarios, with very loud to normal volume, and almost no time to adjust instantly. Thanks!
I use the Auto setting most of the time, and it works really well. If you're in a loud environment, you can switch on the -10 setting to add in a little cushion.
Aw, Sonies do have a different hotshoe! Or do they? I heard that these Sony microphones are worst (or maybe the best?) at having a strange hotshoe and it's not even in universal like what the others is supposed to be. (But mine do have a Sony Handycam from 2011, Which it has an active interface shoe) But I do heard that they made some mics with basic hotshoe type back in around the 90s or 2000s, They do sound really good as these new boys. (And they are stereo microphones)
Sony has definitely evolved their hotshoe over time (I have an old Handycam that had a mic kind of like this, but it's a totally different design). I think they've been pretty consistent with their mirrorless cameras though, and it'll still accommodate any standard shoe-mounted accessories.
So the reason the Sony Mic is so good has nothing to do with the Mic really. It has to do with the digital interface. As you know Camera 1/8” mic input are not all that great. So by bypassing there own ‘weak’ 1/8” mic they improve the sound. If you compare that Mic to say MKH running into the FX3 audio handle and then well it not all that exceptional. Don’t get the wrong that it’s not a good Mic, because it is. Sony has experience making Mic’s If they would improve there 1/8” preamp then well all mic would sound better. And not to pick on Sony most camera have weak audio. Even high end camera because in a high end video work the audio is being done by Audio engineers and recorders like the Sound Device 888
Ahh, I actually didn't know that's what a mic like this was called. Normally I'm an "old fashioned" guy myself, but the versatility of this is something that I haven't found in another mic.
I appreciate the content, but from a viewers perspective the over usage of all the puns and play-on-words is actually a bit exhausting. Every time you do it, it makes the viewer audibly step back subconsciously and forces them to re-engage with what you're saying again as you continue. Once is great, twice is fine, but any more than that and it becomes a distraction. I know it's silly, but I actually have a really difficult time watching your content because of it. I find it audibly exhausting.
Thanks for the feedback. I definitely would hate for my videos to be exhausting, but goofy jokes and things are just a part of my personality. They’ve helped me connect with students and viewers for many years, so while it might not be for everyone, it’s what’s natural for me.

11:27 I've seen that mic when singers recording their song in music studio. 🤣
Ahh yes, the Shure Super 55! It's really awesome.
good video. alot of dad jokes. will be buying the mic
It's a great one! You might want to check out the smaller B10 if you're on a budget.
@@tombuck thanks for the reply biggest issue for me is just a6000 not having audio port and flip facing screen! Very frustrating
How do they work for live music . Should record some live music with your phone .then again with your mic set up
Hey Tom! Have you found ever found a way to record audio to both the camera and the computer at the same time using the rode ntg? Whenever I connect the NTG to usb c it makes the other output really distorted and basically just computer noises. Not sure if this is an issue with my setup or just not possible with these mics
The ECM-B10 would probably have better availability right now being a newer product if you don't need the longer reach of the B1M
I think it is more widely available, but in my case the extra reach was really important.
Just wish I could twist to face me easily.
The Auto thing was cool for me as well. I never used Auto settings, but with this Mic, it works extremely well. You set it, and forget it.
@@lephotographeeclaire thanks. I think I will try the B10...
Still banging the drum for the Rode SVMX. #stereogang
Regarding the B1, I just wish they made it more low profile.
I’m sure that’ll happen in time, but for now check out this video from Peter: th-cam.com/video/4sVYy0Z7ee0/w-d-xo.html
Skip to the 3 minute mark to hear two people talking.
Of course I could use Rode or Saramonic wireless but such a PITA to set up, especially when you are asking to do an interview with another person and time is limited with them.
and great resource, i'll flip through more of his videos, thanks for suggesting that.
Is it crazy to think about changing out my mv7 for this for desk only use?
I don't think so! It won't reject as much noise because of the added distance, but it's definitely usable. Check out any of Peter Lindgren's videos from the past 2 years where he's doing a talking head segment- this is the only mic he uses and the audio sounds great.
I have the sony a7iii and this mic is not compatible with the digital feature only the analog. Is it still worth the price to get?
I just did a very important recording yesterday and decided to start arranging and editing the footage today, only to find that there is NO SOUND AT ALL
The rode NTG WAS plugged in... just not all the way. DEAD SILENT 120GB footage.
I just came back to this video and I hate myself for going cheap and choosing the NTG.
I’m so sorry, this is such a frustrating situation to be in. I’ve definitely been there myself more than once.
@@tombuck Your vids have some of the best sound quality ever! Thanks for the comment!
Hi, Thank you for video. Do you think when we use the ECM-B10 microphone on camera sony alpha ,we can connect headphones to the sony camera to have audio feedback?
Yep, you can still monitor your audio 👍
@@tombuck thank you for your answer !
@@tombuck Thank you, Tom!
Thanks for doing the shake test at the end and saying that... I make 🌽 lol so this mic is a no go
If you get a rubber band (black in color to make it look good ) and wrap it by the shock mount, boom all problems solved.
Do they work for Android phone
Aw, Sonies do have a different hotshoe!
Or do they?
I heard that these Sony microphones are worst (or maybe the best?) at having a strange hotshoe and it's not even in universal like what the others is supposed to be. (But mine do have a Sony Handycam from 2011, Which it has an active interface shoe)
But I do heard that they made some mics with basic hotshoe type back in around the 90s or 2000s, They do sound really good as these new boys.
@@tombuck I do like standard hotshoe, Btw.
Oy. The puns. :D
Cool
Not a good idea, to invest in a microphone that is platform sensitive. Great video!
Filters and directionality don’t make much difference.
This makes sense. Camera audio inputs are typically disappointing, so bypassing that entirely is a good idea.
@@tombuck Just living up to your "Matt is smart comment..." LOL
12:50 THIS
😂😂😂 With great power hey🤣
I paid more to have a clean no wires mic.
The B1M says Expected Availability: March 01, 2023
Check the Google shopping results, it does pop up from time. B&C had it in stock yesterday 👍
I bought one from Best Buy
Sony gets their names from robots.
That makes the most sense, honestly.
Out of stock until 2023
Definitely check Google shopping a few times each week, it DOES pop up from time to time.
@@tombuck Back in stock on B&C Camera!
DISLIKE beam forming microphones. Just go the good old fashioned type.
Ahh, I actually didn't know that's what a mic like this was called. Normally I'm an "old fashioned" guy myself, but the versatility of this is something that I haven't found in another mic.
The “micro” type all are terrible. I am constantly blown away with the positive reviews of the rose micro.
For under $100 with no battery and the ability to work as a USB mic, they’re pretty handy to have.
@@tombucki absolutely love your play on words… up there with Bob Dylan who I think must be a fellow subscriber 😂
