I may have to try out that set Steve! I like this setup but I may need to go a little lower gauge to hit that bend in 10,000 years easily haha! Cheers Steve, thanks for watching and all of the videos you make. Jason
I'm just a lady who has had and played a lot of stringed instruments over the years. I'm the daughter of the guitarist from Bliss (AZ 1965-69 Psychedelic Trio) so I've always found these types of tones sound very soothing; especially when I'm missing my daddy. This year my Spotify most played by far was Alunah's entire album White Hoarhound. So time to learn the latest on producing these tones. Dad said he would've needed 20k watts back in the day to make a sound like that. Please no. $$$$$!!! Def leaning toward an SG for this (which I don't own anymore) so somebody's shhhhoppin. I'll be on this channel a lot while I obsess about the perfect gear before I buy. Got that from Dad, too.
Solid info, every guitarist should be able to do this every time you change your strings. It’s also a good idea to check your neck relief again 24 hours after adjusting your truss rod. Necks will sometimes need a little time to adjust to it’s new truss rod setting. I’ve seen another method for widening nut slots, where you take some fine sandpaper, wrap it around your new string gauge and gently use it to widen the nut slot. You have to keep checking to be sure that you don’t go too deep or you’ll have to replace the nut.
Thanks for watching Jim and great point about re checking after 24 hours. The sandpaper over string trick also pro! Pinned comment so folks would see your great info. Cheers and for watching! Jason
With the sandpaper around a string Nut trick it’s best to measure the thickness of the paper, times it by Pi, then use a string a little thinner than what you’re aiming for as if you want the nut to accept a 60 but file it with a 60 plus sandpaper (x Pi) the result will be over 60. Or, just measure the thickness of the makeshift file before using it. Also keep in mind at all times that we need to go wider, not deeper. Otherwise great info! ;)
@@Wolf_K Easier method would be to wrap the paper around the replaced string. A .046 with paper around will make a wide enough slot for a 60 in most cases. No need to calculate
We usually just use a bit of guitar string... no paper or files, nothing fancy needed... just a careful hand/eye. Also, lube your nut! An spare graphite pencil will do the trick if your in a pinch.... pun intended ;)
Glad video was helpful and I totally agree hahahhah! I remember how hard it was learning how to install strings when it was all word of mouth or having a friend show you. Thanks for watching, Jason
The ultimate proper way to do the intonation is to do it in the playing position (standing up/ down, neck more parallel to the ground or pointing to the sky) and fret the 12th fret the way you would when playing. When you put a guitar on a table on it's back, with or without support on the neck, or resting a lot on it's neck, and when you're playing what angle your neck is will change the pitch of the strings, the neck moves, gravity and all. This means doing the intonation in the non playing position will probably give a different result in the playing position. Same thing with the fretting, if you do it lightly when intonating vs fretting hard when playing, it will be off. It's a slight difference overall (yet definitely noticeable) , and it's great to do the intonation whatever way, but we might as well do it the best way Besides that great vid Jason, it's always a good thing to educate guitar players and spread the word setting up a guitar can be done at home fairly easily

Good info here. I would add just a few things. 1. Those measurements are suggestions. You have to vary per guitar and player. If you have a light touch, you can often get away with a flatter neck and lower action. If you have a heavy touch, you'll probably want more relief and higher action. 2. Measure the action with the capo on the first fret (or just fret at the first fret while measuring). 3. Check the pickup height after setting the action, but before setting the intonation. Pickups have magnets that affect string vibration (and therefore intonation). If they're too close, you'll get a weird chorus-like effect. Too far, and your guitar will sound weak. Fret at the last fret, and measure from the top of the pole to the bottom of the string. For humbuckers, I shoot for 2/32 of an inch on the bass and treble side.

Fuzzlord Effects It’s super nice. I’m getting back into playing from about a 15yr hiatus, used to play clean tones with a Gibson 135, Now that I found Doom, and your channel, I’m re-inspired to play again. Im on the preorder for the FU-2 and I think that will be sick with the Yeti🤘Thanks again!
Also playing a Fender Mexican Telecaster with 42-09 gauge GHS strings tuned standard E to E, it has a set of Tonerider Hot classics pickups in it, the Fender Strat has a set of Fender Noiseless N4 pickups in it, and also playing a Gibson USA Les Paul Studio with 46-10 gauge GHS strings tuned standard E to E.
Right now my favourite doom guitar is my LTD Viper 50 Silverburst SG model. Always been a C standard guy, but occasionally I’ll go down to B standard or up to C# standard. Personally for me I like Ernie Ball light top heavy bottom strings because it retains heaviness of the bottom strings for heavy riffage, while also being able to solo on the higher strings n not have them be hard to bend, just cause I’m a fan of bending strings. Cheers guys!
I use an epiphone Sg pro 400 with a Seymour Duncan screamin demon in the bridge. I have it in drop b right now. The strings are Ernie Ball heavy bottoms 👌🏻
Jackson soloist slxt 11-56. C tuning. I’ve just started learning to play in different tunings and it fucken rules! Werid tuning but with the drone strings it's really interesting with heavy fuzz or cleanish
I mainly use 7 string Ibanez RG 7321 with A drop tuning and 11-60 strings. I changed the original humbuckers for Active SD Blackouts and now rips concrete out of the ground....
No bad information here. I have a few things to add - when checking the action, fret the string at the first fret to take the nut out of the picture. You don't want any variance in the slots in the nut to affect the measurement. After making any adjustment (truss rod, action, intonation, etc...) tune the guitar to pitch before checking the measurement and adjusting again. Check the pickup height after you've checked the action and *before* you adjust the intonation. The magnetic pull from the pickup can affect sustain and intonation. Fret the last fret, and measure from the bottom of the string to the highest pole piece. I go for 2/32 inch on bass and treble sides for humbuckers, 3/32 inch on the bass and 2/32 inch on the treble for single coils, and 1/32 all around for active pickups. Check intonation in playing position. Things like gravity and pressure on the neck from a neck rest can noticeably affect intonation. I tend to go for .009 inch relief, and 2/32 inch action on the bass side and 3/64 inch action on the treble side. I then adjust as the guitar or player needs. I tend to play SGs - I have a 1983 "The SG" and 1991 SG-1. In E Standard I use 10-46, in D standard I use 11-48.
I play an SG with a Telecaster neck, which I assembled myself. Was a bit tricky, but in the end it stays in tune and the intonation is good, too. It has two Humbuckers with a little above 9k. I usually play it in C#-standard and I use Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms (.10-.52) so the strings are a tad less loose than with a set of regular 10s. I used the ends of the thicker strings (low E, A, D) to carefully take off a tiny bit of the nut so they fit perfectly. A file or sandpaper can also do the trick, but if you are not 100% sure what you are doing, better take it to the luthier.
In my experience intonating a guitar that is laying on its back will cause the guitar to play flat since the weight of the neck will pull slightly when tuning. You probably have more experience than I do, that’s just something I’ve noticed. I intonate my sg and thinner neck guitars while it’s sitting in my lap.
I have a Squier Jazzmaster and either a Greco APW500 Dan Armstrong copy or a Fender Toronado strung with 13-59 off a 7-string set. I tend to tune those guitars to either C standard or drop B for sludgier/doomier songs. I also have a Fender Jaguar and Jazzmaster strung with 11-49s for either Standard or a bunch of weird alternate tunings. We mostly play punk/noise rock.
1984 Gibson Challenger, Drop C#, 10-52 set (with 52 swapped for 54) , Rio Grande CrunchBox bridge pickup..or 2006 Gibson Explorer all stock (496/500 pickup set) .
I use an Agile 727 with 60's tuned to A standard. I mostly play sludge, doom, and post-rock on it and the extra string adds a lot of lower range to mess around with and still leaves the same upper range of a 6 string tuned to D standard.
great video! i play a jackson RR(without floyd rose) loaded with hipshot tuning and a dimarzio airzone on the bridge pickup, tuned in C standard with ernie ball 11-56. love it!
@@FuzzlordEffects TH-cam finally understands me! Haha. I'm definitely gonna be hitting up the fuzzlord shop soon! Thanks for the great content! Keep bringing Doom to all!!!
I mostly use baritones for low stuff. Both are tuned to B standard and I can get to drop A with them. I have a cheap Agile that I want to take to my local shop and have it set up for D standard with a drop C.
Great vid! Been really into Doom lately, although I’m just a metal fan in general, I typically listen to BlackMetal as much as I listen to Doom. Having said that, one of my fave BM bands is BlutAusNord and he(Vindsval) seems to use C#Standard tuning as well. Oddly enough, the first time I used heavier gauge strings, 12-60 I think, I had to file the nut. Worked out brilliantly.
Gibsons and Epiphone, C standard tuning. Usually run 10-46, have 11-52 on a couple. Also have a Gibson Les Paul in G standard with 13-56 flat wound on it.
Chapman ML3 Pro For strings...I use 13, 17, 30, 42, 52, 62 Ernie Ball Cobalt tuned to C#/C Standard (I can play D Standard on them but they do feel a little tight). My local shop didn't have any Mammoth Slinky sets, so I improvised one from a 7 string set and just didn't use the smallest string of the set...I'm fixing to use this "hack" again for my E Standard guitar to make Drop D playing feel a little more balanced (the A and D strings feel too stiff for stacked and barre Drop chords). Using 7 string sets give all sorts of customization options.
'16 Gibson LP Studio faded. I keep it in C#. Skinny top heavy bottom strings. But I measure my 8 thou from 1st-16th/17th fret. Any straighter than that and I get buzz on the first fret and action to high at 12. I'm currently at 3.5-4/64" on Bass and 3/64" on treble.
Jackson 7 string, I use a custom set of .10-.64 for the low b string, tuned to f# standard. Basically standard 8 string tuning but without the top string. I rarely use the low F#, I focus more on the B tuning and kick in that low string when appropriate.
Thanks and very informative. I've got a Schekter C-6Plus and after watching this I think I will just take it down and get it done professionally before I try it myself. I want to try a doom sound but I gotta do it right Thanks Fuzzlord!
I play a BC Rich Trace Warbeast with a Duncan Jazz Humbucker in the Neck & Lace DRop & Gain in the bridge. I use standard tuning (if it was good enough for Sabbath it good enough for me). Lastly, I have Ernie Ball Super Slinky 9-42. Weird combo but it works for me some how.
late 80's BC RICH NJ Warlock & early 90's BC RICH Bich Platinum, at the moment 11 to 52 with C sharp tuning, playing Death Metal with Doom, Grind and Punk influences in the vein of Autopsy Nunslaughter etc
I have a Harley Benton Tele with humbuckers that is set up in C Standard with D'addario 12-54. Thinking about switching to 11-56 Cleartone's since I prefer using coated strings. It's awesome for the doom/death metal genres!
Fender Squier - Ernie Ball Not-Very-Slinky strings - I was doing Drop D but I may try C Standard next. I’ve learned how to set it up myself which is fun. I’m a n00b
Double-necked electric mountain dulcimer with humbuckers in open C, 12-gauge strings :D Made the entire thing myself including the pickups and my fuzz/distortion pedal which is tape-head fuzz using germanium transistors and then hard-clipping with red LEDs on a push-pot.
Gibson Sonex 180 . C# standard or drop B . I went heavier strings recently with a pack of 12 - 56, but didnt like 24 gauge 3rd string or the 56 gauge 6th string so swapped for a 17 and 52. I really like this string setup (12, 16, 17, 32, 44, 52) but it’s impractical because I can’t buy 1 set with those gauges and I’m not gonna buy 2 packs each time I wanna change strings. Thanks for the video, I need to do a good set up on my guitar and this is straightforward and perfect for what I need to do.
I am mostly a thrash/death guy, so currently I play Washburn X50PROQ (ESP styled headstock) SD Custom 5/ SD '59 with 10-46's in D,Eb,E standard. Tone pot gutted out for coil split/ killswitch selector. Probably gonna buy a cheapo LP or something with 24.75 scale soon, tune it to C and slab in the Dimarzio X2N I have lying around for ages... Starting to get in that drony fuzz riffing, stuff is really meditative :) Cheers from Russia BTW!

My main guitar for doom is an Epiphone Explorer Artisan in B Standard with Elixir baritone strings (.012-.068). I just got a Gibson SGJ that I will be setting up the same way.
Les Paul Jr tuned in A# with 14-72 strings. (Baritone strings)
1966 Mustang in A# with 14-72 as well.
I keep my others in C with 12-56.
I always use a wound third.
All at 432Hz because it’s nicer to my ears.
I have my dad's old fender lead 1 copy strung with 12 - 60 strings tuned to anything between c and drop a
I bet that sounds awesome!
Cheers,
Jason
@@FuzzlordEffects totally, a great way to make use of a guitar that I wouldn't use otherwise. Good video man, gonna save this for reference next time I set up.
Jericho Fusion 6 27" scale length. Tuned to C standard with 12-60 strings.
That sounds amazing! I really like a good baritone guitar.
Thanks for watching,
Jason
Been reading these comments looking for another smart man with a baritone. You sir have good taste
'13 Gibson SGJ w/ Railhammer pups. Eb standard, 10-46 // '97 ESP Ltd EXP-200 (Japanese), C-standard, 11-52. Great information, thanks.

78 LP sounds like a badass guitar!
Thanks for watching,

This video was awesome! You got a new sub. It's nice seeing these types of music and guitars taken seriously. Fuzzlordddd!
Thank you! Happy to help pass along the things I have learned (: This week is a pickup swap video.
Thankyou for the clear and simple instructions.
Picked up a Dunable Yeti, From MusicStoreLive, they set it up with Dean Markley 13-56.
Thanks for the great channel!
How do you like the Yeti? I have been wanting to play one of those so bad!!
Thanks for watching,
Jason
Fuzzlord Effects It’s super nice. I’m getting back into playing from about a 15yr hiatus, used to play clean tones with a Gibson 135, Now that I found Doom, and your channel, I’m re-inspired to play again. Im on the preorder for the FU-2 and I think that will be sick with the Yeti🤘Thanks again!
17’ Les Paul Faded, C standard and 11-52. Thanks for a great video!
For the heavy, fuzzy stuff, it's a mid-90s Epi LP Standard, 11-56 D'Addario XLs, B Standard.
Squier tele custom, HH, 10s in B standard. I know, but I kinda enjoy the floppiness.
Ibanez SRC6 in E standard one octave down D’Addario Bass VI 24-84 strings.
I play a custom of my own design built by Halo Guitars, it's 26 and 1/4inch scale using 56-13 gauge strings in drop A.
The Shape i thought 7 string for a sec. .13 for a high e.... o u c h
Use tubings from E standard to Drop A, 9-46 to 12-68 respectively but main guitar is a PRS SE Holcomb in Drop C with 10-56
Nice!
I play an 8 string Schecter C-8 that I keep in standard or Drop E. 9 - 80 gauge strings
So brutal! Have you heard of the band "UN" they are really into 7 strings and you may dig them.
Jason
I haven't I'll check them out.
Gibson SG Special, C# Standard tuning, 8-38 gauge strings. Frets resurfaced and recrowned. ZeroGlide zero fret installed.
I bet it played so nice after having the frets leveled and crowned!
Cheers and thanks for watching,
Jason
An Epiphone 1958 V in Ebony with a set of 12's in C standard. Dooms for days
1958 V that is so cool!!!!!
Jason
I use an epiphone Sg pro 400 with a Seymour Duncan screamin demon in the bridge. I have it in drop b right now. The strings are Ernie Ball heavy bottoms 👌🏻
Jackson soloist slxt 11-56. C tuning. I’ve just started learning to play in different tunings and it fucken rules! Favourite song to play so far is ‘snakes for the devine’ Thanks so much for the vids mate they are amazing. I’ve had so many questions and you’ve pretty much answered them all in your clips! You absolute Hellman!
Thanks for watching Scott!
Aria ProII TS300 modifies with new tuners, bridge and Tony Iommi Gibson pickups. In Drop C 11-49 strings. Into a boosted Micro Dark into a 4x12 Carvin cab.
Badass rig Matt!

I have 5 guitars all tuned for different tones ,schecter C-1 elite (Ernie ball 10-46) E flat,
Reverend sensei railhammer chisel pickups ( Ernie ball 11-48) D standard,
Electra les Paul custom gibson 500T/498R pickups (Ernie ball 10-52) C standard,
Schecter daimen emg 81 pickups (Ernie ball 10-52) B standard,
Westone dimension IV (Ernie ball 11-56) E,E,D,g,b,b. Werid tuning but with the drone strings it's really interesting with heavy fuzz or cleanish
NYXL 10-52 , fender performer strat . 1/2 step down , Seymour Duncan Pegasus trembucker , mid and neck stock
1980 Aria Pro II CS-250, Gibson Scale, 13-74's for ADADAD
Nice!
In E Standard I use 10-46, in D standard I use 11-48.
my doom rig is a 05 les paul studio drop a 12-60 DDT this thing rips with gen 1 sd blackout pups.
Badass!!
Rocking my custom built explorer from warmoth with a set of EMGs. Tuned usually to B or C# with a set of 52 to 10 heavy bottom.
Did you build it? Sounds like a badass guitar!
Jason
Yeah! I built it for my senior project in high school. Hipshot locking tuners as well. Shit friggen rips
2002 Gibson F9 mandolin, 20-53 gauges tuned in flat thirds, strings tuned F# C C# B#
1936 homemade banjo, flat wound 32-60, Strings tuned A Db E Bb Gbb
Doom Grass lives!!!
Gibson explorer 10-52 in drop c fishman pickups and anything from Mastodon riffs and just recently some stoner stuff 🤘
Sounds like a badass guitar and setup! Favorite Mastodon song??
Cheers,
Jason
Dingwall NG-2 5 string bass. Tuned to A standard and with a .150 on the A string
Good point! I will have to check intonation with tuner while in playing position and make sure. Thanks for the tip!
Jason
I have a Squier Jazzmaster and either a Greco APW500 Dan Armstrong copy or a Fender Toronado strung with 13-59 off a 7-string set. I tend to tune those guitars to either C standard or drop B for sludgier/doomier songs. I also have a Fender Jaguar and Jazzmaster strung with 11-49s for either Standard or a bunch of weird alternate tunings. We mostly play punk/noise rock.
Badass guitars!
Jason
1984 Gibson Challenger, Drop C#, 10-52 set (with 52 swapped for 54) , Rio Grande CrunchBox bridge pickup..or 2006 Gibson Explorer all stock (496/500 pickup set) .
Those sound so badass!
@@FuzzlordEffects I dig it. Both of course were bought used. The Challenger was $299 so I didn't think I could go wrong!
I use an Agile 727 with 60's tuned to A standard. I mostly play sludge, doom, and post-rock on it and the extra string adds a lot of lower range to mess around with and still leaves the same upper range of a 6 string tuned to D standard.
Sounds like a badass guitar!
Jason
Jackson Randy Rhoades RR24 in C standard tuning with 10-52 gauge strings
Same string set as Steve from @doesitdoom (:
Jason
great video! i play a jackson RR(without floyd rose) loaded with hipshot tuning and a dimarzio airzone on the bridge pickup, tuned in C standard with ernie ball 11-56. love it!
C standard def my favorite also (:
Cheers and thanks for watching,
Jason
New fav channel. *Certificate Of Authenticity*
Thank you so much!!!!

Barri life
I am going to experiment with a Starcaster Contemporary. Got some 13-62 to put on it. We will see how it handles Fuzz and low tuning.
Nice! Have fun working on your guitar!
@@FuzzlordEffects thanks man! Looking forward to your next run of pedals! Can't wait to get my hands on one

Happy to see some black metal love here

Gibsons and Epiphone, C standard tuning. Usually run 10-46, have 11-52 on a couple. Also have a Gibson Les Paul in G standard with 13-56 flat wound on it.
Chapman ML3 Pro
For strings...I use 13, 17, 30, 42, 52, 62 Ernie Ball Cobalt tuned to C#/C Standard (I can play D Standard on them but they do feel a little tight).
Im using a “Vintage” LP copy white with golden hardware. Its tuned in C standard woth 10-46 strings from d’Addario NYXL
Hey Timmi nice guitar! I think white LP guitars look so badass
Glad this video was helpful in showing you what the process was to help you make that decision!
Jason
I play a BC Rich Trace Warbeast with a Duncan Jazz Humbucker in the Neck & Lace DRop & Gain in the bridge. I use standard tuning (if it was good enough for Sabbath it good enough for me). Lastly, I have Ernie Ball Super Slinky 9-42. Weird combo but it works for me some how.
Cheers!
late 80's BC RICH NJ Warlock & early 90's BC RICH Bich Platinum, at the moment 11 to 52 with C sharp tuning, playing Death Metal with Doom, Grind and Punk influences in the vein of Autopsy Nunslaughter etc
I have a Harley Benton Tele with humbuckers that is set up in C Standard with D'addario 12-54. Thinking about switching to 11-56 Cleartone's since I prefer using coated strings. It's awesome for the doom/death metal genres!
Epiphone les paul special II, standard C, 11-52
Fender Squier - Ernie Ball Not-Very-Slinky strings - I was doing Drop D but I may try C Standard next. I’ve learned how to set it up myself which is fun. I’m a n00b
LOVE IT . . . C Std is my go-to tuning !
Such a good tuning
Sgr C7 guitar with gauge 11 daddario strings. Stock pickups on this guitar are great. Standard tuning with the extra low b string
Badass!!
Double-necked electric mountain dulcimer with humbuckers in open C, 12-gauge strings :D
Made the entire thing myself including the pickups and my fuzz/distortion pedal which is tape-head fuzz using germanium transistors and then hard-clipping with red LEDs on a push-pot.
Ernie Super Slinky (09's). Drop D. Thinner strings are easier to play expressively on, bend and gives a tighter low end.
Nice!
LTD Eclipse or MH tuned to Drop C with 11-56 D’Addario strings
Peavey T-60. 11-52. C# standard. I play some good old fashioned Sludge. I find the most important thing is that you have some sweet stage moves and you smoke a lot of dope.
100% yes!
LP copy 10 to 60 strings with C std or drop B flat tuning for some songs.
Bb is a favorite tuning of mine also!
