Info is hard to come by on this it seems. When I try to find stoner/doom bands on equipboard, and their gear, the distortion/fuzz effects are always there. But I know there is phaser/flanger on these albums but nothing is listed on the guitarists page. I've always wondered if everyone is using an MXR Phaser 90 (or some variation) or if its all different types of phasers. There has to be some common modulation pedals in the genre the way the Big Muff is a staple.
@@PearlJamaholic you can't go wrong with an mxr phaser, they are classics for a reason. Personally a fan of the phase 95 bc you can get alot of different sounds out of it
I think a video discussing vocal effects would interesting. Doom often has some seriously effected vocals all the way back to Ozzy, but its not talked much about.
@@FuzzlordEffects I know he used a Harmonizer always during his solo years. Especially live. It was whatever the most expensive one was. Maybe Eventide? Can't remember the name now but it was super important even back then. He wouldn't have sounded good live. It was like a member of the band Lol.
@@FuzzlordEffects Well doublers and time based effects are really common, Mike Scheidt was talking about that when you interviewed him. Ozzy used a Leslie on planet caravan and I think various kinds of modulation are commonly used in Doom. Jus Oborn distorted his vocals with a guitar amp for Dopethrone and I know that JHS colorbox is a popular in other genres for adding distortion to vox.
I've never managed to 100% get a sound I love out of fuzzes but they're a lot of fun, I'm prefer a fuzzy distortion like an Orange amp, RAT or Sunn emulation pedal
Great video as always Jason! I used a RAT (& a Spectral Realm, what a fantastic pedal!) on my first album. Nice to hear from such versatile pedals and the bands that used them; I definitely recommend checking out the other videos on the Fuzzlord Effects channel!
@@FuzzlordEffects No probs! I will include a link as suggested (although I call it 'noise' not music!) Your pedals are fantastic and should be known by many more in the music community. Anyways, here's a link to my 'noise', this one being the first track proper from my upcoming debut album with more coming soon! th-cam.com/video/6cnMkVyXJSo/w-d-xo.html (enjoy the terribleness of my sounds!)
I borrowed a Blues Driver from my guitar teacher and it sounded very warm. I found out that it got more balls pushed with a treble booster in front. I was very happy with the sound in comparison with my Carcosa fuzz, more warmth and balanced. The BD2 is on my wishlist. Anyone have tried this too?
I have the M4. Its a killer pedal. I like to put an EQ and OD in front of it, and push it into "fuzzstortion" territory. Mid knob really opens up the possibilities with it. Its awesome feat of engineering.
The DOD 250 is criminally underrated. Put it into a slightly dirty amp with hot pickups and it becomes a sledgehammer that still has upper midrange bite. Compliments my Sunn Concert Lead perfectly.
Rat is my favorite. It's the only drive pedal I feel does a great job at being a boost, light overdrive, distortion, AND a fuzz. Amazing pedal. Also sounds amazing being hit with a tubescreamer or Sd-1.
great presentation 👍i never knew that fuzz pedals were so important to this style of music, as i myself grew up on the 80s ibanez tube screamer pedal plugged into a marshall jcm 800 half stack sound, which was pretty much the standard sound of 80s metal. Another good pedal that might work good for doom metal is the boss hm2, which has a much scooped overblown gain tone that the metal zone pedal doesn't have. rare to find hm 2s, but theyre still around. Would be great to know also what the top high gain amps for doom metal are, as Marshalls are becoming old news, cuz there are so many different amp names nowadays. Thank You
If you like Big Muffs, try the EQD Hoof. The tone shaping options are amazing. I built a clone of it and it has never left my board. Works great on bass too.
@@FuzzlordEffects The MXR Phase 95 is amazing. You get 4 pedals in one for like $100. Both the 90 and the 45 then the script and block letter options. And it sounds great.
The Dronemaster is my favorite pedal I currently own since it's super versatile and I love using it as a boost for a high gain amp or just going full Windhand with it and diming the gain and volume and setting the tone completely dark. I feel bad I don't use it as much as I'd like since doom isn't the main genre I play and it doesn't get as tight as I need for my more thrashy sludge riffs but I still love it and I'll never sell it haha
I have a one man band named OGRE ORGY and I use my rat as a boost to push my other dirt pedals mainly the Danelectro FAB TONE imo the rat is the most versatile boost ever created
A Muff for sure, sometimes I prefer the big-ass-box NY one, but usually Sovtek Deluxe or EQD Hizumitas (and a Bass Muff for bass). All of those Muffs tend to sound best boosted by a distortion pedal, Turbo Rat and Boss HM-2w being my favs. Also, I have couple of those Boss FZ-2 clones, inc. the Behringer one. I found Behringer's "secret" mode the best, but actually got other one for the solos, set in The Secret Mode II: between fuzz 2 and the boost. Other pedals for my doom, sludge, stoner, desert, drone -shit: Acapulco Gold (should be one of the first pedals on the board, since it reacts best the guitars knobs), Ghost Echo reverb before most of the dirt section, Black Arts Revelation SuperBass for cranking the amp deeper than hell, Black Country Customs (Laney) Tony Iommi Boost for... guess what? EHX Freeze for the endless drones. You may lol for my MXR Tom Morello Power 50 od after Acapulco and Orange Kongpressor, but It's fx-loop it actually fuckin' great for boosting my Geezer Butler Crybaby, Qtron, Ghost Echo and EVH Phase. Boss eq GE-7 is more than handy, and OC-5 octaver is a must. In the fx-loop of the amp I usually only use Zvex Lofi Junky and/or Fender Pinwheel rotary while dooming around.
Rats are the best! And for anyone interested ever since I demoed the drone master ans its been one of my favorite takes on it. If you're considering buying one. Go for it
I really want that Electric Wizard FU-2! If anyone has an FU-2, do you put it before or after overdrive or does it not stack and you use it on its own?
OK this is late, but when I play doom on bass I usually use a Korg KP3 set on "decimator" with the X-Y set just where the signal starts getting completely destroyed, into a vintage tube amp. Noisy as all fuck....
Great video Jason, your passion and contribution to the doom metal scene and sound deserves much respect. I'm interested in buying your MF-4 pedal and have seen this big muff (NYC) mod by Occvlt pedals (link below). Is your MF-4able to nail this tone? - It's EXACTLY the Big Muff tone I'm after th-cam.com/video/z02aRTT1YLU/w-d-xo.html
Yeah :) it’s a Travis bean clone, the body is a real Travis bean but the neck was a clone made by a machinist years back when they found a stash of the old bodies
I use more software now for guitar tones but even with technology they still cain’t replicate well a good fuzz tone especially for Doom Metal. I want to but one now thatnks for the info
Come hang out and join our Discord server at discord.gg/sMxH982b
I think a video about the type of modulation pedals used in doom would be pretty cool.
You can literally use any modulation type pedals. Delay, reverb, tremolo, vibe, chorus, flange etc etc. Buy some used pedals and experiment.
I think a video about this would be awesome! Maybe drop some comments of pedals that would be cool to see in a video 🙏
I would want to see chorus and univibe (cause those are the ones I have for other types of music).
