- A passenger told the bus driver that he is not actually doing real work! Is this true? Can a bus driver really do a full day’s work?

I take the bus so I can relax in the back while the driver does the work. Thanks to our drivers who work so hard to keep us safe and on time.
3:31 SO TRUE!!!!
You're a lot nicer than I am. People who say stuff like that to me usually get a, "Well we're hiring if you think it's so easy." That usually gets 'em to pipe down pretty quickly and I honestly think most of the public thinks that driving a bus is just like driving your car up and down the same road three or four times a day. It's not...not at all.
The definition of "work" (and working ) is in Blacks Law dictionary. Look it up. The hardcover version in your local library is better, because it cites the cases
People fail to realize the responsibilities behind operating a bus. Not only do we have to make sure our passengers get from point A to B safety. Not to mention driving for all the other drivers on the road. We're responsible for pre-trip inspections of our vehicles making sure they're safe to take out on a route, we have to make sure the walkway is clear of any tripping hazards as well. Like I tell my passengers that think the job is easy: There's a lot that happens behind the scenes other than driving.
Couldn’t have said it any better. 💯
You hit it right on the nail. I have to operate 40 foot and 60 foot bus vehicles.
The people don't understand what bus operators have to go through on a daily basis. We have people give us bad attitude, loud music on the bluebooth and get hated on by other bus operators, i had a colleague give me the middle finger when it was both buses going northbound during rush hour on you pick up the other passengers and they have basically an empty bus. I never get a full hour sleep. I took a power nap when I was at the layover. I never had a passenger did physical violence at all but i basically ignored all the rude passengers because I'm a third degree black belt and I'm not trying to lose my job, go to jail or anything because I love my freedom and liberty so i learn to de-escalate a lot of situations as much as possible. Some passengers don't understand that bus operators come from the streets before we moved into better neighborhoods.
I'm a city bus driver and you made ALOT of good point's know one really understands how much we deal with on a daily bases!
Ive worked in warehouses, production lines, and out in the sun for 8hrs...........Being a bus driver was the worst out of them all.
I have worked at a Warehouse for 10+ years and driving a bus is WAY easier. Bus driving is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. All matter of opinion.
Yesterday I had a person fall asleep from one bus station to the next bus station, wanted to go up to WalMart westbound to my end of Route before I head back eastbound. I had him removed by security and I was called every racial slur you could think of for a white male. He was giving Security a hard time but he had two options get off the bus and wait for the next one (30 mins) or be banned for 24 hours. The Passenger could have very well continued to his destination if he did not fall asleep. I just did not want to wake him up and deal with his attitude. This route we get joyriders and sleepers frequently, most cannot figure out the east and west as all they see is a bus with the number 11 displayed. Public transportation has a negative stigma and I’m trying to change that, even though it is impossible.
It happens, I’ve done it while riding the bus and I will tell I wasn’t happy when I woke up and passed my stop.
Then I get a Karen who wants me to close the doors and turn the heater off. So for 10 minutes of complaining I tell her I’m not closing the doors until I depart and if you do not like it remove yourself from the bus. Yes I can be a mean bus driver but I don’t put up with any nonsense (can’t use curse words).
I enjoy the job but sometimes the passengers get to me with their questions when they already know the answer. They just want to confirm what they asked and I get it, doesn’t mean I like it. People strangely enough act the same world wide.
Hit em with the "Light work, no reaction"
Love fellow operators, and yeah we do work. It is a job!
and if you don't think so... I would love to learn your "job"; office desk jockey.
The man was probably unemployed anyway. The chronically unemployed are our biggest critics, so I always consider the source when it comes to comments from them. They are literally the peanut gallery.
Yeah, weird how the unruly, problematic riders are always the ones who demand courtesy rides or attempt to flag the bus down way outside a bus stop, etc. It is literally always them. I don't think I've ever had an issue with someone who got on normally, paid their fare, and sat down.
I am a transit driver and I endorse this message
Ever since the advent of low floor buses from mid 90's till now, the public's moral compass has dropped, entitlement skyrocketed, and the drivers respect and seniority also has dropped to that of the passenger, to the point where the passenger has more rights and protection privileges than the driver!
Man your so right! I'm retired 7 years now. Was in the business for 34 years. There is no freaking way I could ever go back and do that job. Society has been going down hill to fast for me.
When i used to drive Greyhound bus driving on the expressway, i would be tired and yawning because all you see is dark when you have to driving at night time so i had to drink some espresso hot coffee from Dunkin to keep me awake so i would pull my bus to the side for a few mins. I have to admit that those drivers seat are so uncomfortable.
Idiots walk around all over the world, at all hours of the day and night. Keywan, don't let such stupid comments bring you down. 99.99% know that it is strenuous, important and very responsible work. You have my respect.🖤❤💛
Ain't that the truth. I'm getting my keester kicked out here. Got here late and missed my break. I'm taking a walk to calm down. The people have been extra attitude today.
I hope it gets better for you!!
I’m a taxi driver in Las Vegas. Most of the questions I get from passengers are stupid questions they can simply look up on their smartphone. Some people just want to talk just to talk.
Folks don't understand, more oft than not, driving is the "easy" part. Any fool can drive. OPERATING is a skill - and not everyone can do that.
I must be doing it all wrong! I haven't seen anything RELAXING about transit driving.
I've been driving School Bus for 12 years and on top of that I've been driving a 48ft Motor Coach Bus for 3 years and I can truly tell you that this is not a relaxing job at all...
Whether you are a City transit driver or a school bus driver or a Motor Coach Bus driver these jobs maybe not physically but it's very mentally challenging because of the safety hazard issues the drivers will have to put up with from very heavy traffic to unruly students or passengers this job as a bus driver is not easy at all....
It takes someone special that loves people and takes pride in his job and above all follows safety regulations and the traffic laws to the highest standards because at the end of your day bus drivers are very responsible for our Precious Cargo inside our buses weather it's a city transit bus or a school bus or a Motor Coach Bus...
I work 5 day's a week here in Sacramento ca. Driving a transit bus! Trust me irs work! Im not chilling.
Agreed. I am also a professional bus operator in a major city.
Bus Drivers are underappreciated. You all are responsible for the lives of the people in the bus. You drive in all weather and you have to work even when you have mental stress. Thank you for your service.
had a kid jaywalk a dangerous street to get to my bus stop 2 times and each time I called them out on it. and they always get surprised at how I can see them from over a block away and know its them. they also get surprised that I can find people in the middle of the night. bus drivers have much better awareness then any other drivers on the road cause we are used to dealing it. its just what we have to deal with it. also, just a reminder, most 40ft buses weigh around 18 tons, and light rail trainsets around 200 tons, if a bus hits your 3.5 ton pickup at 10 mph, that would be the same force as getting hit by a equal sized pickup at 45 to 50 mph. lord knows how bad it will get at higher speeds. also its kinda sad how many people cuss us out.
I don't think bus drivers are not working as they maybe sitting there but they watch out for lights change and stops and Liston to the machine when it says to them at the lat min this bus stays here at lat min for awhile and watch out for traffic pull out in front and even someone on passenger even forgets there stops they have have a go at driver and he to try to stop it😮😢😅
AMEN TO THAT BRO I DEAL WITH THIS EVERYDAY ALLDAY
You have a challenging job and especially when dealing with traffic and passengers. Continue with your hard work
Hear hear. As a fellow bus driver I absolutely agree. 👏🏻
I appreciate you for watching fellow operator!!
So all of these years the bus drivers have lied to me then...
I can't believe they just relax 😓
Driving a bus requires brain power and fine motor skills. Trust me we are working. I would describe it like we are office workers. The difference is one office is stationary and the other office is not. Personally I prefer the none stationary office.
This job ain’t easy
My hubsand is a bus operator and he had a customer ask him that question. He told this guy that he's at work so no he's not chilling but he paid his fare and went to go sit down and lay down. I am teaching him sign language so that could look great in his resume for other work opportunities in the future so he could communicate with customers that doesn't speak like I could. He likes to avoid confrontation with aggressive passengers because he's a third degree black belt and he is strapped so he told the guy that he could have a seat sir or ma'am. We really enjoy your channel Bus Driver Life. He can't really get a full hour sleep but he tries to do that. The illegal migrants get on his bus without paying their fare in Downtown Chicago. I always like to tell my bus drivers thank you for their hardworking even if they say something or not. I also like to greet them as well. He told me that he had another bus driver flipped him off with the middle finger when he was a rookie at the job.
I appreciate you watching and thank you for sharing!!
I agree all Bus, taxi, uber and lyft drivers are hard working essential drivers. Passengers getting on them is relaxing, not drivers.
Uber drivers not really I give respect for the bus drivers that work everyday all day it's just not hard work it's lot of responsibilities be driving big ass buses don't be comparing Uber to bus drivers
@hi-et1oq
Here, a lot of the problems we have while driving buses are caused by Uber drivers. 😅
They stop everywhere (including bus stops and lanes) and drive like crazy, like they own the streets.
@geandeoliveira2093 when I used to take taxi in nyc or long island, I would make sure it not bus stop or bus lane.
I hear this all the time. However, I have worked five years as taxi driver, six years as security guard, seven years as a teacher, two years as a translator, and ten years as bus driver, and teaching and doing all the other professions full time is not as hard as working as a full time bus driver. When you drive a city bus, you constantly process information and then make decisions. It is hard work.
It's mental labor!! Your eyes are always moving and remain focused on people walking out in traffic on their phones, earpods, with hoods on not seeing oncoming traffic, cars cutting you off, texting and driving or on their phones, scooters darting in and out from nowhere, bicycles, motorcycles doing tricks riding between you and the car on your left, strollers being pushed out in traffic while mothers are on their cell phones. Not to mention when there's inclement weather....the absolute worst!! THEN dealing with 'certain' passengers. Yup, we're chillin' alright!! 😂😂
this is facts. 🫡
I used to work at Amazon delivery before I became a bus operator and my first job was at McDonald's when I was a teenager after high school. You hit it right on the nail with this comment.
Yes. It's work. Driving to compensate for all other drivers mistakes, not to mention it feels like driving a dump truck.
Major problem is also that people mistake your reduced/safe speed, and safe distance to an vehicle ahead, as an invitation to claim the available space.
They do not comprehend that the space in front is a safe stopping range.
Cutting in front reduces the space at least by half, making it very dangerous, because the speed might not impress you, but the front of the bus will definitely leave a real impression when traffic congres to an unexpected stop!
Spot on, thank you!
Robb G
Transit driver, Visalia CA
You’re welcome!
Will you ever come out here to Milwaukee and give the Nova LFS-E buses a ride?
I plan to! I visited last year but I didn’t have enough time! Hopefully this year I can make it happen!
Do transit buses have air brakes like trucks do or regular breaks?
Air brakes unless it's one of the smaller 20pax cutaways then it's hydraulic brakes.
Today I was taking the A Line in Minneapolis on 46th St and there was a car parked in the middle of the street and had to maneuver it. Proof that driving a bus is not relaxing
Capetown to Harare.......
Can you do this challenge. Contact local operators for a few days trying something different... I'm sure different bus and coach companies would allow you to do a TH-cam video for a few days....
Hello from germany.
Without having seen this video i am a 100% sure that your job is really hard. Especially in high populated areas and city centers. You are responsible for the people IN the bus AND everything AROUND it. your bus is the same dangerous weapon like a car but its bigger, heavier, less manoeuvrable ... let's say way deadlier!
So just beeing sleepy or distracted for a second can end horrible.
Your job is the opposite of being lazy.
Ps: i'm used to hear english but not to speak/write it.
As a profession bus operator in a major city.....
I once had a black woman who told me......"All you do is sit there!"....
I'm like okay. If all I do is sit there, how am I able to operate a 60ft long artic bus and get you safely home at night?......
We are constantly disrespected like this on a regular basis.
I am honored and privileged to serve my community in this role.
🙏🏾
Be safe out there.
I feel like playing videogame, while getting paid. But what would I know, my previous professions were; Store Manager, Ecommerce Manager and Sales Director, all at videogames distributor. So at my perspective, I haven't worked a day in my life and I'm 43.
I also remember I was riding on old nice bus n20 Northern Blvd bus from Hicksville to Flushing via Great Neck. when bus was on two way Sanford Av westbound, transdev driver on nice bus n20 came up to school bus getting ready to put amber light at school near 147 St, when idiot car driver went to oncoming traffic to cut our bus off, then n20 driver honked at that idiot driver only to be stopped by school bus.
In New Jersey, it's illegal to cut any buses traveling in NJ under yield to bus law.
I remember I was on NJ Transit's GoBus25, BRT with bus lane and rear exit only, on Market St, bus was returning to Newark Penn Station, where one car driver cut off bus to make right turn in front of bus.
It happened in nyc on both mta Q6, Q10, njt GoBus25 and nice bus n20 bus long time ago.
I was on new pm Q6 limited between JFK and Jamaica along Springfield Blvd, bus was crowded, and Q6 bus was approaching bus stop at Atlantic Av when idiot car driver on left side of bus cut him off to make illegal right turn, forcing bus driver to slam break
I was also on old q10 limited northbound between jfk and Kew garden, when bus was on lefferts blvd approaching park lane when idiot driver drove on oncoming traffic to make left.
The job isn't so much physically tiring, it's a very mentally tiring job, and as the brain uses approx. 20% of the bodies energy and it always needs to be switched on, you should be able to understand why.
Relaxing is typically why I prefer riding the bus or taking the train vs driving a car. So much shit you have to pay attention to. I'd imagine even more so when operating a bus. And dealing with the general public.
Having worked on buses 🚍 for years before MS ill health a lot of people just don’t have a clue it takes longer to stop alot of buses 🚍 than it does to stop a car as you know Mate. 👍
Don't forget you can not close your eyes for 3 seconds when you're driving. People driving a car with 2 "noisy" kids in the back get tired after a few hours. Try driving a bus for 10 hours with the noise level in a bus around you! And in city traffic... A bus driver does the job of a train driver and the job of the person working in the back of the train. Stay safe, love from Norway!
Lemme tell you one thing I spent 16 years driving 18 wheelers Long Haul and Local I became a City Bus Driver 6 months ago and I've never been more tired, it requires FULL 💯 attention all the time you are always chasing the clock, anyone who says bus drivers chill at work would not be able to handle a day behind a wheel.
he thinks because you aren't breaking big rocks into small ones with a hammer it's not work... driving is still work and def stressful work.
It can be a relaxing job in comparison to other jobs, however, it is far riskier than other jobs too. In Australia heavy vehicle drivers including bus drivers are 16 times more likely to die at work than all other industries. Mainly truckies, but there have been examples in operating buses as well. I like to think about it as 7% its a relaxing job, 90% deep intense concentration and 3% damn right terrifying with what we see on the roads and with passengers.
Oh my, you've got it all wrong. All I did for 26 years was sit on my ass and turn the steering wheel. Piece of cake. Just ask any out of work college graduate who's never even ridden a bus, let alone driven one in service.
Are there bus drivers that have just parked the bus and just walked off of the job? Talking about having to deal with people have you ever had to deal with a passenger having sex on your bus in the back seat? I know that in my city in the '90s, I know a bus driver who had sex with a passenger on his bus in the back seat. Can you please make a video talking about these issues what would happen and how they should and shouldn't be dealt with?
3:07 thanks for the shout out and using my video i really appreciate it
Noone can relax in the trip. One day i and my friend were heading to work place. My friend was seen the driver who was fallen in deep sleep. She was trying to waking him up while i and others were unaware of what was going on there.Luckly, We all saved because of her. So, even the passengers have to look around to. It is a trip not a vacation place as you said.
I love when they say that. Because my response will be you won't last a half of mile in my position
For all the people that believe that bus drivers don't actually work are wrong. Bus drivers have to drive the bus in traffic deal with the ride passengers pay attention to traffic operate the bus and make sure the passengers are safe. I know nus drivers have been called right back for other drivers that didn't come in to work.. The bus drivers get paid just like a truck drivers train operators forklift operator.
Funny how you would listen to this even here, because we drive front engine manuals on most routes. 😅
Physically, it can be hard. Staying several hours in the same position doing repetive movements and feeling the bumps and so. Mentally it can be exhausting at times.
BUT, here where I live in Brasil, I think most passangers see bus drivers as equals. There is some level of respect. Specially if you are friendly and understand that you'll find every kind of people out there, with different stories, necessities...
The ones who don't like bus drivers are the other drivers.
Your chilling if siting in the depo at midnight as relief driver If not your working
What people don't realize is that all buses don't have the same slow takeoff. Some take off faster than others, and when they try to cut us off, they are surprised and almost crash in the back of cars in front of them.
People also think we are further away than we are, because the engine is in the rear. They think there’s a truck approaching but still far enough away, to their surprise it’s right behind them.
I hear it all the time, then tell them to go fill out the application, then get back to me after you finish training and your probationary period and let me know how easy it is after you complete your first full year of employment.
All facts spoken in this video.
They talk alot of shit but they wouldnt last 1 min
It is a physically draining job
I had two different people stepping in front of my bus today. One lady must have come from a country where they keep to the left, as she stepped off the curb, looking to her right. Nothing coming from the right, right? Well, I came from her left. Had to brake hard! She lived to see another day. Then later on a guy rummaging through the trunk of his car, decided to step and walk around to the driver’s door. He had to hold his tummy in, not to roll between the bus and the car. He too lived to see another day.
I had a passenger tell me that I had it good. Just driving. I said yeah than you should apply. He was like oh no I got something else going on. We have to be alert all the time, even in an office job where you sit down all day you can let your guard down or not be alert. Sometimes I feel its hyperfocus for hours especially if you late and barely have any time to stretch. I have a route here its 3 hours long back and forth before I can shut my mind off for just a few minutes.
I get annoyed at anyone who suggests being a bus driver isn't real work. The fact is, most of the general public thinks the job is too stressful and that's why there is a shortage of bus drivers and why if you apply, you're most likely to get the job. I'm even more annoyed if someone suggests its "not real work" because I've had a very long list of jobs over the years to compare with. Pharmacy assistant, technical support for cable internet/TV, support, service for payment checkout machines, working at a truck stop gas station during COVID lockdowns when no other jobs were available. I finally became a bus driver after COVID settled down and have been doing this for just over 2 years.
The fact is, being a bus driver is taking on a lot of risk. If a member of the driving public gets upset, they can call customer care and complain. If someone on your bus doesn't like the fact they have to pay for a ticket, they can call customer care and complain. And each complaint is investigated, even if its not a valid complaint. You still have to deal with it... Write a report, defend yourself, and so on. It isn't just the bus driving itself, many people don't realize its a service job as well. The scheduling has to be one of the toughest things about bus driving, we are told by management and trainers that "safety is #1 priority" and that's fine when its on paper (I do agree with it), but in reality they create schedules where you are waking up at 3am and then getting home after 6pm (my current schedule, actually). Sorry, there's nothing safe about such a short home schedule. I'm not actually complaining, I'm just saying its a tough responsibility. I drink energy drinks when I get tired, and they aren't good for your health, but I have a responsibility to not be tired. You CAN'T fall asleep or make a mistake with it, or you are blamed. It isn't blamed on the tough schedule you're provided...
These little things add up. The situations in the video are real. Being a bus driver is a technical job. You have to know geography, routes, maps, streets, and you have to be attentive to change. I work in a suburban system and our longest route is about 45km long, it takes a while to adjust to some of these very long suburban routes. You have to try and adhere to a schedule even if it seems impossible. The stress alone of running into situations like the video presents are enough to scare most people away from the job. You WILL encounter disturbed people that are rude. And you have to deal with it while tasked with operating a huge piece of equipment, you aren't simply at a desk or a counter or dealing with it over the phone, its while you're operating a very sensitive piece of equipment that has life or death consequences.
Yes, its a skilled position that requires a lot of commitment. Scheduling alone is one of those commitments, we work hours that most jobs aren't required, with splits that make days very long or straights that have no breaks unless you want to run 30 minutes down every day. Yes, it takes a lot of skill to bring this all together.
Sorry for writing so much, but I felt it was necessary. ;)
I would just smile.....🙂
I came into the job thinking I would be just driving, not really working, and getting compensated really well.
Boy was I wrong. There is a ton of responsibility that comes with being a bus driver, and you are absolutely working the entire time. Except on the cake routes lol, but those are few and far between.

All Facts💯
I love your videos, I watched them before I trained, I watched them all through training. I watch them still. I’m on the job 2 years. And it means more to me now than it did before I started watching. You are so right in all that you say. For anyone who wants to do this job. THIS IS THE TRUTH!! 😊 welcome to the team! 👍
How is it would you say?
In stores and hospitals, securities have easy jobs. They be on the phone and sitting down doing nothing.
Lmao yeah okay. I remember the bus driver from Vegas freaking out on the passengers.
I remember that too.
I mean.. i live in small town with 50 000 residents and we have city buses here and actually i know some of the bus drivers here because later i wanna be a bus driver and some of told me that they actually realax and they told me its a good job he was like "i just drive this bus around the town and i enjoy it its chilling" but i understand sometimes there are stressful situations but i think it depends on the city you are driving the bus in
You can never truly chill though. I get what they are saying especially driving in a smaller town.
Dot 10 hours off..before the start of your next shift
It’s 8 hours off for us..I wish it was 10.
Do you have to wear uniform?
Yes
Zazur bus 🚌
Had to cop a treadmill. Sitting down all day and gotta go home and walk to simulate activity. It’s the same for anyone who sits at work all day. And we pulling up tree trunks on our off days!!!😡🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
✌🏾
At the same time that the chaos happens on a bus, there are other passengers like me when I used to work, at the end of the day, riding the bus on a non-busy route, I would go to the back of the bus, find an empty row of seats and use it to sleep until the bus approaches the bus stop. If the bus is packed, then it's time to consider the passengers who need seats.
💯 facts
And I asked a bus driver "Why you keep stopping at a Green Light and looking both ways?".
Yes. Is work. But to be sincere. Is the easiest job I ever had. Other than customers is a really chill job. Except for dealing w passengers.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
I know I've called several bus drivers lazy,.Im mean to bus drivers sometimes. Some of them I have cursed at and said i cant wait until the buses get automated and get rid of drivers. I get frustrated and angry sometimes, some drivers deserve it though. Thankfully,i rarely need a bus these days.
Shut up
he was probably feeling cocky because he finally got a part-time job as an electrician's apprentice's assistant. They all think if you're not standing and sweating then its not real work.
