cool looking spot, the Empires are one of my favourite fish, most people don't think much of them when they catch them because they look rather drab but when you bring them home and keep a small school of them the males will colour up really nice, the drab colour is their defence colour, they go camouflaged so to speak, their biggest downfall is they love their food so they are easy to catch in a trap, much harder with a landing net, even in an aquarium they know how to avoid the net, you may even find them in aquarium stores in amongst feeder fish because at a young age they look a lot like feeder fire-tails, where sometimes in the same store they can go for a higher price as a species for sale so it pays to check the feeders first. The beauty of these fish is they are very hardy and really long lived but slow growing, they will reach a size up to 12cm over time and are great for a community tanks as unlike some of the other gudgeons they don't really pray on other fish and will take prepared fish food in the community tank, they can be a bit aggressive to one another flaring up but never really do any damage to one another or other fish and can live for around 15 years in an aquarium and will get to know their owner but will also remember for a long period if you try catching them, so they have a good memory and if you treat them right they will become great pets.
They truly are so underrated! One of our favourite fish also! They look they monarch butterfly's when the nales are on display! And as you said really peaceful in a community tank! They are absolute pigs tho haha! Always first to the feed 🤣 I do see in the fish groups on Facebook that people buy them as feeders! Love catching these guys! I should have included some footage of the ones we have at home!
That sounds like a stripped gudgeon to me! 3 solid horizontal bars with yellow tinge on the fins! That feeling never gets old! The blue eye was such a mission bit felt so good to finally find them!
I've got a tank set-up currently with about 15 ornates trying to breed them! Got them in black water and heavily planted, one of the females has broken away from the school so I'm hoping she starts laying soon! But I think a few people have breed them successfully! There's some good info online but there's not alot! A few aquariums have sold them in the past but I'm unsure if they were breed or caught. But I never seen any forsake in person... I think the laws around selling them is abit grey 🤔
They are very easy to breed, you can simply put them in a bare tank with a mop and remove the mops into another tank or strip the eggs or just put them into a pond or an IBC tub that is heavily planted and they will breed readily, they don't tend to predate their fry like other rainbows so if kept in a pond you will have plenty in no time, I keep a few locals and they are all easy going on just town water and don't need any special requirements, I have collected them from acidic water and they just transition really easy and breed just as easily, even just on a diet of fish flake.
@TheNanoNerdz I'm sorry that I'm always commenting but I went down Wongan way down the creek and caught two southern platy fish u should see the colours on them idk if it's rare for them to be here cause there native to mexico
Definitely will be coming up that way in the future! And if you could that would be awesome! I've never trapped or even know where any good spots are up there!

I caught my first gudgeon last night via hand net 🥰 was so proud!! I believe it's a striped? It was yellow fins 🥰

How much ornate rainbow fish can I have in a 70 litre
You could probably have around 10 should be fine if it's just them! If you want to breed them put one male to 3 females and heavily planted the tank
Also have you or anyone ever seen ornaments breed in captivity
