This was inspiring, thank you! You also addressed a couple things I could not find answers to in countless other pond/patio pond videos I have been pouring over. Well done.
Best natural diy pond video. Thank you so much you show and explained everything so well I actually feel confident enough to have a go at my first pond 😁
I had good experiences with the following technique with premade ponds. Dig the hole a little bit bigger, level the plastic bin, on a sand bed, fill the pond half way up with water and then use a water/sand/earth slurry to fill up the gap between the pool and the ground sounding it. The gap will be perfectly closed. Then fill up the pool completely and repeat with the sand or mud slurry. It's a quick method.
Adorei suas dicas e ideias de montagem desse laguinho só com plantas. Também pretendo aproveitar um espaço pequeno aqui no quintal para realizar um projeto que já tenho em mente... Agradeço por compartilhar sua experiência.
I want to ship you a pointed shovel good sir. It would make digging that pond a breeze lol. Fantastic looking ponds though, that bog filter is going to be a powerhouse. Great choice of plants too, good use of that corner space too🎉
That's one of my projects next spring. Had 2 summers in a row that I have had a frog visitor to my yard. So figured give them a pond. Enjoy your channel and projects. Thanks...
Really enjoy watching your videos. Educational with plants that can go in a pond and that's what I am looking for as well as building and decorating the ponds for the fish. You make it look so easy. Also the filtering systems. Thank you. Keep posting and teaching, please.
Me and My 3 year old daughter really loved that video! Thanks for doing such a great video and putting so many varieties of species in it. You have greatly improved that area of your garden
I know! I honestly couldn’t believe how quickly that toad moved in. He’s stuck around aswell, I’ve seen him several times.. and he even hopped into the house the other day when I left the back door open!
i love this channel and all your projects. there is only 1 downfall and its a huge downfall by the way.. there just isnt enough videos 😉 please keep them coming alot more often mate.. GREAT WORK AGAIN!!!
Omg I love this channel. What an amazing yard you have designed and fish pond is lovely . Wish I could do things luke this. But hoping ur channel gives me the push I need.
That's really nice... For where you are. Fully half of those plants are considered invasive in the US, and are restricted in many states. All of the floating plants, basically, and the irises.
The pups are always so good at supervising ehh? lol You shoulda kept the sink and hung it on the wall and made a waterfall out of it😀😀👍👍 Super fun project Ginger Fishy…..we hope you get some lovely little amphibious creatures in there to enjoy and observe….for sure you will with that inviting area you’ve made em!!
I love this video! I like how it isn't "picture perfect" compared to the bigger youtubers pond diys. The little frog house is adorable and in Australia we call them "frog hotels"
Will be sure to do an update! The toad has defo stuck around though, I’ve seen him several times now.. he even hopped into the house the other day when I left the back door open!
Great project but a lot of those things including the slate and your little frog house will be ideal slug and snail houses and your hostas will be gone.
Could you please post a video of your wildlife ecosystem so I know what native plants to use? I would love to see your gardens, I assume they are spectacular
I have a pond and have upgraded 3 times. One point of improvement for you to implement. Your filter is too close to the waterfall. When you get the chance move your filter and water intake to the opposite end of the pond and place at the bottom. You will then be able to filter and most importantly move the entire pond water system. You do not want dead zones of stagnant water. You will be amazed on how bright and disease free your pond water will become.
I love this video! I am planning to create a wildlife pond in my backyard as well and this was extremely informative!! A bit scared about setting up the little pump but hopefully I can figure it out! My question is can this go in a sunny spot as well and if so what changes would need to be made? Thank you so much for sharing ❤❤❤
Thank you! Yeah, if you put it in a sunny spot, just try to get as many plants in there as you can, especially plants that will provide a good amount of surface cover, for example water lily’s, as the pads will provide shade to the pond. This will stop too much light getting to the pond and causing algae, it should also help the water temp from getting too high. Good luck with pond build!
@gingerfishy hey I have a question that liner that you bought does it have to be in the ground I guess what I'm asking is that the plastic or rubber feel thick enough that if you were to put it just inside the house as a standalone pond would it break I'm considering getting one of these small ponds as a feature inside the house??
Hi there! Unfortunately I don’t think it would be strong enough to be free standing. You’d have to strengthen the sides somehow otherwise I think it would bow out. You can get tubs that that are strong enough to be free standing though. 👍
I thought about adding a ramp and a whole, through which wildlife passes but not the turtle shell. It would be nice if the box turtle could have a save swim and have visitors whilst helping the other animals survive.
Really helpul video 😊. A couple of questions: would a solar pump be powerful enough for the bog filter? Could you give a rough idea of costing for this project? ( I know you said some items were free) and lastly, where do you source your pond plants - shop or online? TIA 😊
Thank you! It may work ok if you in have plenty of sun. The only thing you would need to do is to make sure the waterfall filter is not too much higher than the pond. Otherwise when the power goes off at night the water will back flow out of the filter and back into the pond. You could add a non-return valve which would stop this from happening. Personally though I think if I was going solar I would go for a solar air pump, perhaps attached to a small sponge filter, with air stone inside. This would still filter the water, oxygenate it and add some slight water movement. Cost wise i think this project was about £300. Biggest expense was the slate for around the edge, but if you’re lucky you may be able to find something similar on eBay or facebook marketplace, same goes with the actual pond liner. Hope that helps! 😊
Great informative video. I was nailed to watching everything you shared here 😂. Great job 👏 I was wondering though, I've got an enclosed fenced garden: if I did something like that, how would wildlife get into my garden for such a pond 😮? Or wouldn't it 🤔? Many thanks for giving me ideas, particularly as to what plants (I've never heard of 😅) I might be advised to invest in ❤
Hi there! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!! Yeah, if there’s no gap under the fence some wildlife will struggle to find the pond.. obviously dragonfly and birds will be able to enjoy it still.. I know some people try to leave a gap somewhere along the fence line to help wildlife move around, luckily for me there is a gap under my gate, so the toad must have come in there. You never though, a bird might drop off a bit of frogspawn for you!! Yeah, I think all the plants I used are either evergreen or perennial, apart from the water lettuce which won’t survive the winter here in the UK, so I’ll have to remove it when the temps start to get too low. 😊
@GingerFishyOfficial Wow- that's such a GREAT amount of GOOD information 👌. Thank you. I know I've got a frog 🐸 in my garden (somewhere): him must have hid in the flowers/plants I had in my old koi pond at our old place (16 years ago). So despite the amount of renovations I've had, carried out to the garden areas, it's a miracle he's still alive. You should have heard him in Feb/April calling for a mate 😀. So another reason: to encourage the dragonflies back. We used to have quite a few, but the last couple of years, not so much. Anyway, many thanks for your prompt response and further suggestions: really helps 👍
Great project ! Is it possible to use the filter setup with a small Solar panel / power ? Dont have access to power grid where i would make a small pond
It’s only requires a small low powered pump so it may work if you have a good amount of sun. I don’t think it would work too well here in the UK as we don’t really get enough sun. Also depending on the size of the pond it may be best not to add fish, as oxygen levels may drop down at night when the pump turns off and potentially cause a problem.
Did a pond like this 1 year ago. All was well frogs already…now pea soup. Little miss got 2 fish. Should I put the plants in with just gravel? ( solar pump filter with same set up as you)🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, could try putting plants in just gravel to help with excess nutrients? Whats the sun situation like? Is the pond in full sun? And have you still got fish in there?
@@stujo718 yeah, must be an excess nutrients issue then, so getting a few plants going that are planted in gravel could well help. Also, if you can get hold of some hornwort, that’s real good for nutrient export.
I tend to get them from an aquatics shop (Shirley Aquatics in Birmingham) that is fairly local to me. They have a really good pond section with lots of different plumbing bits and bobs. It looks incredible and obviously the wildlife agrees. I can see that you have done research on the plants. Did you only use indigenous plants or non- indigenous also?
It was a bit of a mix of both native and non-native plants to be honest.. basically it was what my local pond plant supplier had in stock. The wildlife seems to like it either way though! 🐸
wow!! great job man, beautiful plants and love your channel, very simple and creative ..just thinking during heavy rains how would you get rid of excessive water?
Thankyou! Yeah, the edge of the pond has little grooves around it, which I think is for overflow, and I’m hoping any excess water can be soaked up by the plants around the pond. I’ll see how it goes though. I’m actually just in the process of adding an overflow pipe to my big pond that I built last year, which I’ll be showing in the 1 year update video.
Well done for including protection for the creatures with the pump, good idea. Good video.
Thank you!

Not sure about the plants you used, but if this is a wildlife pond, you should think about using all native plants.
Always someone who nitpicks at a minor detail instead of appreciating the beauty of all the hard work that was put into it.
