No we don't have the appropriate approval to lost fish yet! It something we would like to do tho!
where is this creek? id like to try catching some for myself but i dont know where to find any
Sorry for the late reply! It's called Maguires creek in teven nsw! Just off the side of the road!
@@TheNanoNerdz 8 hours away lol im not getting any
Where's a new video
We Doo need to get back out there! Hopefully soon! Sorry about the lack of uploads dude!
can you please tell where you are and the name of the creek
It's in the middle of goonellabah in NSW! It's a run off from the tucki tucki creek on Dudley drive! The only access is the footpath in the video!
When is the next video
Hopefully tomorrow!
@TheNanoNerdz I'm sorry that I'm always commenting but I went down Wongan way down the creek and caught two southern platy fish u should see the colours on them idk if it's rare for them to be here cause there native to mexico
No problem!! sorry for the late reply! Not to sure if seen these platty fish? Would love to see them tho! What do I google to find a picture of them?
All of mine haven't developed the hump on the head but are full of colour. Ive had over 20 of them for over year and only 5 are roughly 15cm lol the others have only grown a cm lol any clue why
With empire gudgeons, they tend to breed in groups so only the dominant breeding males will show the hump head and flared up colour! About 5 of our males are dominant and there all different sizes!
Do you live in new south Wales or Queensland?
We are in NSW!
@@TheNanoNerdz nsw just up from Newcastle
Near ballina pretty much right on the Qld border!
I just got two of them. Going back for 4 more. I fell in love with these guys and the anchor catfish. Beautiful little guys
They are our favourite catfish! These and fetherfins!
How much ornate rainbow fish can I have in a 70 litre
You could probably have around 10 should be fine if it's just them! If you want to breed them put one male to 3 females and heavily planted the tank
Ive got a spot for purple 💜 spotted gudgeons. Willing trade.
I have 10 to choose from
I went down Wonga way down the creek I caught big ornates really red tail
That's the way! We have about 20 in our tank! There's a causeway about 2km past summerland aquarium that has same ornates but with a blue tail!
Have you ever caught smelt
Yer dude we caught some in the old swimming pool in Alstonville! Have them on a pond outside and they are doing well! Can look abit like mosquito fish when their young
@TheNanoNerdz yeah I went there again and got some more today I'm waiting for your next video to come out and I seen that short you made of the empire gudgeons I need to get some if they turn out like that
Where are you in this video
It's down the alphadale crossroads, where rous road turns into dalwood road! you can stop at the bridge and go under it!
OK so it's near the crossroads I think I found it is there any way I can send u a picture of what I screenshotted to make sure it's the right spot cause I want to be able to get some of them fish
Hey I live in wollongbar and I'm trying to catch some of these fish that u catch here I need to no where that is can you please tell me
Small world mate! Another wollongbarian! They can be tricky little buggers to catch! Head to the end Wonga way in wollongbar, walk into the bushes at the bottom of the road, when ya get to the creek look right and bobs ya uncle!
Yeah ik that place but where are you in this video
Nice
Thankyou!
I discovered this channel from Jeff Kane's community post. It is beautiful.☺
Very happy to have you here! Hope you enjoy our content 😊
@@TheNanoNerdz I am sure I will.☺
Loved it. Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to the next one 😊
Thankyou sir! We are super lucky to have so many healthy creek systems around here! So there is plenty more spots to explore!
I'm behind on videos 😬 Absolutely love it!!! Thanks for sharing 😊 I have the Rhadinocentrus Ornatus, Rhadinocentrus are definitely my favorite of the rainbow fish types 😁
Thankyou so much! Glad you enjoyed it 😊 We love our rhads aswell! It always makes my day when we find a creek system with ornates! We should be able to film some more content soon! The weather is crazy here at the moment!
I caught my first gudgeon last night via hand net 🥰 was so proud!! I believe it's a striped? It was yellow fins 🥰
That sounds like a stripped gudgeon to me! 3 solid horizontal bars with yellow tinge on the fins! That feeling never gets old! The blue eye was such a mission bit felt so good to finally find them!
Questions for ya mate!! When you throw your traps back do you rebait them with fresh stuff? Great video by the way!! Only find ya lastnight but loving your chilled vibe man!!
Yer straight back in! If it's looking abit gross after an hour or two you could change it! Thankyou thankyou! We have been trying to get back out there and shoot some more videos! Just battling the the weather haha
what bait do you put innthe nets ?
We use dog biscuits or cat biscuits! The ones with salmon or tun in them! But you can use frozen fish food or pelets
@@TheNanoNerdz i used algee pellets the other day and managed to get a few southwest goby and blue spot gobys
Are these waters primarily silty? I’m try to recreate my aquarium as closely to their natural habit to attempt to breed them(I know it’s basically impossible but I like a challenge lol)
Not normally! This was right after I big rain and heaps of storm water was around! Usually this spot is clear with usual level of silt! But I've found adding driftwood to tennon up the water seem to make them happy! But yer I've had no luck with empires!
What do you feed them?
They are on frozen blood worms with garlic and high protein dry food!
@TheNanoNerdz definitely making them pop! Really keen to set up my 6ft native tank, even more so after seeing your guys one 👌
Thankyou! We love our empire they are super peaceful! And colour up rhike this least once a day! You could have a few in a 6ft!
@@TheNanoNerdz yeah I'm keen to get a few to add with my crimson rainbows and gudgeons. Need to find a place near the goldcoast to trap some empire gudgeons
Are they empire gudgeons
Awesome video, love your array of fish. The macaw is beautiful! I've just started to catch my own native fish to. Have some crimson spots and gudgeons would love to get some blue eyes and empire gudgeons
Thankyou so much! The blue eye can be tough to find sometimes! They seem to avoid super clear water from what I have found! If you haven't seen it already I have a video catching blue eye!
@@TheNanoNerdz yes I've seen it thanks I binged watched alot of your videos lastnight lol. Great content
Any yabbies yet ?
Not yabs yet brother!
Love me an empire gudgeons, beautiful fish
One of my favourite!
Great stuff guys - very special spot that place. Definitely worth a snorkel in summer…
Definitely need to get some good underwater footage when it warms up!
cool looking spot, the Empires are one of my favourite fish, most people don't think much of them when they catch them because they look rather drab but when you bring them home and keep a small school of them the males will colour up really nice, the drab colour is their defence colour, they go camouflaged so to speak, their biggest downfall is they love their food so they are easy to catch in a trap, much harder with a landing net, even in an aquarium they know how to avoid the net, you may even find them in aquarium stores in amongst feeder fish because at a young age they look a lot like feeder fire-tails, where sometimes in the same store they can go for a higher price as a species for sale so it pays to check the feeders first. The beauty of these fish is they are very hardy and really long lived but slow growing, they will reach a size up to 12cm over time and are great for a community tanks as unlike some of the other gudgeons they don't really pray on other fish and will take prepared fish food in the community tank, they can be a bit aggressive to one another flaring up but never really do any damage to one another or other fish and can live for around 15 years in an aquarium and will get to know their owner but will also remember for a long period if you try catching them, so they have a good memory and if you treat them right they will become great pets.
They truly are so underrated! One of our favourite fish also! They look they monarch butterfly's when the nales are on display! And as you said really peaceful in a community tank! They are absolute pigs tho haha! Always first to the feed 🤣 I do see in the fish groups on Facebook that people buy them as feeders! Love catching these guys! I should have included some footage of the ones we have at home!
Good stuff as always
Another great video! Must be awesome having.such a great trapping spot almost on your doorstep. Let's hope the invasives never find it.
Twice now no invasive! I think there is some gambisia around after some floods but I'm yet to catch any here!
Awesome video!
Thankyou muchly!
Also have you or anyone ever seen ornaments breed in captivity
I've got a tank set-up currently with about 15 ornates trying to breed them! Got them in black water and heavily planted, one of the females has broken away from the school so I'm hoping she starts laying soon! But I think a few people have breed them successfully! There's some good info online but there's not alot! A few aquariums have sold them in the past but I'm unsure if they were breed or caught. But I never seen any forsake in person... I think the laws around selling them is abit grey 🤔
They are very easy to breed, you can simply put them in a bare tank with a mop and remove the mops into another tank or strip the eggs or just put them into a pond or an IBC tub that is heavily planted and they will breed readily, they don't tend to predate their fry like other rainbows so if kept in a pond you will have plenty in no time, I keep a few locals and they are all easy going on just town water and don't need any special requirements, I have collected them from acidic water and they just transition really easy and breed just as easily, even just on a diet of fish flake.
I've got a 2 foot tank that's heavily planted with val and the ornates will not stop breeding
Bit of a late reply but yeah there r a fair few invasive species thought most brisbane waterways we ever r starting to get mystery snails taking over
Let me know if you do come up and I’ll show you a few spots
Definitely will be coming up that way in the future! And if you could that would be awesome! I've never trapped or even know where any good spots are up there!
I'll take all the mystery snails I can get! The Pea puffers smash them!
brilliant stuff
I'm loving the content mate, keep it up
Thankyou so much! We love making these videos!
Oh wow this is awesome. I'm on the Northside of Brisbane but have had no luck getting blue eyes, any recommendations? 😅
From my experience they seem to like flowing water and aren't huge fans of going into traps. adults like to hide in plant cover right up against the bank! While to fry you will see on the surface looking for food! I suggest cat food with tuna and leaving to traps in for close to an hour! Also jump on the Atlas of Living Australia and punch blue eye into the search bar! Will show spots in your area others have caught them! Hope this helps!
@@TheNanoNerdzthank you 🙏
What is the sand you have in there mate looks much better than the sand i have (unicorn pool filter sand)
I think it's called premium white sand! I have thrown the bag out... it was rather expensive I remember
@@TheNanoNerdz thanks mate looks really nice i'll have a google see what i come up with.
Great video Jake! but these fish aren't rare you find populations all through their distribution, there are some populations that are under threat from development land clearing for logging and feral fish, they are the ones that need to be kept in check, I know you may catch more with bread but it's not good for the fish or the waterway, maybe try Vegemite on the dog biscuits and see how it goes, the bread can also bloat the fish or fowl your water on the trip home if you have a bit of a long trip, great video though and thanks for sharing some of your local habitat it looks like a beautiful spot, keep up the good work! try not to give out to many locations with rare attached to it or you will find people will bomb the place and destroy it, just human nature everyone want something rare, I have to learnt from this, unless it's feral fish then they can go nuts, I look forward to future videos 🙂
Cheers for the info Jason! I truly thought they were considered rare! To be fair I think we have found 3 different types and when we do usually it's a good number of them! Don't know where I got that Information from haha! I do some more googling and get my facts all lined up! And the bread always comes down to my lack of planning or just not thinking about it until we are there! I do need to change I don't want to harm any of these boys or give people the wrong info! I'm a bit of a bull in a China shop haha I need to plan ahead more 😅 It really is a nice spot and I hate to see it ruined! I do try to coy around the location but I did probably say to much in this one! Cheers for the advice dude! I do appreciate it! And I will make the change to dog/cat food in the future!
@@TheNanoNerdz Mate I've done the same and then have run around looking for a shop for bait, now I keep a couple of clip seal bags in my car all the time, I found the fish smelling cat biscuits are the best, the idea of it is to attract them without them actually filling their guts up so they don't fowl the water to, Leo uses burly witch works as well. Although those Rainbows will look similar keep them seperate from each creek unless it's just for a display as it's not the best if they cross, there are some rare populations for instant the Brisbane ones were almost lost but have been bred up again, but most are pretty safe for now, I did do a video for the ANGFA conference last year of the Brisbane ones, the video is on my channel if your interested, I did a Biotope Aquarium to replicate their natural habitat as the water was to cloudy to get good footage of them, they to are safe for now. I hope I didn't come across as having a wine, I love what your doing, we should have more of us around to document these creeks, there are to many of them, and I enjoy watching these videos as much as making them my self 🙂
Not at all! I'm always looking to make better content whether it's better info or methods I'm open to all of it! Want to show how cool our creek systems are never hinder them! So the more information I can get the better! I will definitely check that video out! The ornates I have here are separate from each other and in planted, tennon heavy water to try to replicate where we found them! I will do a video updating the tanks and how they are all going soon! Cheers for checking out the video!
Awesome video cuz ❤
Thankyou brother!
Huntsman 😂
I've got the same problem with those Bunnings racks. I'm going to build my own as have a number of different tank sizes and can custom it to those.
We ended up using it for tools in the shed! Was terrible as a fish stand hahaha that's definitely the way to go!
Good video. And great to see such a healthy ecosystem. It would be nice to acknowledge the images that you show. The Evans Head and Teewah Ck Rhads are my fish, the Carland Ck Rhad is Bruce Hansen's. The images were taken by the late Gunther Schmida. And while the Evans Head Rhad is from your area, the other two are not found in your area.
Good advice from the Rhad King 😉
Bloody awesome! I'm up on the Goldie and really need to get out and look around. Haven't done near enough!
Do the ornates prefer clear water over murky ??? Been raining here lately (south qld close to noosa) and unable to get anything other then millions of empire gudgeons. Perhaps I’m just looking in creeks that are too muddy. Great videos 🤌🤌
Ij my experience, they are not too bothered! Caught them on a rainy day in flood water in our 1st video... then clear water in this video! They can be tricky to find! I moved the trap 3 times off camera for the dog food trap! 4th time was dull of ornates! Just try different spots even in the same creek. Might be some hiding somewhere!
@@TheNanoNerdz cheers for that, will have to keep going! They’ll be the last addition to my 100% wild caught aquarium
There awesome fish! yer keep throwing you will find them! What's in the native tank? Some gudgeons I'd hope haha!
bogan
Dad kisser
Great vid and beaut fish mate, I hope to trap some myself here in Bris, they go quiet in the winter?
Cheers man! It gets down around 0 here in winter and we catch them year round! They always come out for a Vegemite samich
so nice seeing you pull so many beautiful natives from my home town. You should go and check out dalwood and maron creeks. Tosha falls has quite a few large eels in it, or it did 25 years ago when my mate fell from the top and cut his foot open. The blood brought every one in the pool to him. poor guy.
No good for ya mate! Haha like sharks in a pool! We have been meaning to check all of those places out! Especially marrom heard it's really pretty and full of fish! Would love to pull a eel out on video! Thanks for more spots to check out!
Try Whiskas Tuna & Sardine Dry Cat Food .Better than Dog biscuits. Vegemite sandwich is the best ...
Will have to give that a try! The fish should love cat food!
