    According to Murphy's Law a shut off valve can be relied on for many years until a few moments before you actually need it.

      This is 100% true of gate (multi-turn) valves, because they have a seal inside that compresses.
      It's 99.7% false of ball (quarter turn) valves, which are not only a much simpler mechanism, but which don't seal using a compressible material that can fail.
      In my opinion, the only reason gate shutoff valves still exist is that they are around $1 cheaper, and it's rarely a knowledgeable owner that installs them. Plumbers would rather pocket a buck than prevent problems for you down the road.
      My house was built with gate valves around 20 years ago. Shortly after we bought the house replaced all the bathroom shutoff valves with ball valves.
      A few months after that, the (original) gate shutoff valve for the refrigerator failed by starting to leak. The link went under the floor, into two adjacent rooms, causing several thousand dollars worth of flooring damage. I'm absolutely certain that if this was a ball valve it never would have failed. It's so great that the home builder saved less than $10 by putting in these cheap valves when they built the house.

    Great video. I wish you explain that with a compression valve you shouldn't use and paste or tape to make a better seal or fit. The paste or tape on a compression joint or valve will cause a leaky valve or joint.

    For removing the old fitting I strongly recommend getting a compression ring puller. They're pretty cheap, and they make the job of getting the nut and the ring off very very easy and clean. Over your lifetime that $10 is very well spent.

  • @noiseof3889
    @noiseof3889 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This video got me in the ballpark but it would be helpful to see the ferrule removal if it's stuck, possibly with a compression removal tool. Mine was too tight to pull off and I may have scored the pipe in attempting to get it off. I put on the new shutoff with the old ferrule and nut and it's got a slow drip. I will try removing ferrule with proper tool and replace with a new one, hopefully that will seal correctly.

    • @vero0992
      @vero0992 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same problem. I tried to use the old ferrule/nut with the new valve and so had a leak. I bought a ferrule puller and was able to get it off, but I think I damaged the new compression valve by overtightening with the old ferrule/nut in the first place. With the all new hardware I have no leaks, but I went way tighter in that valve than the others and I'm worried about having to cut off/extend the copper pipe if I ever have to replace the valve again. The other 3 were fine, learned my lesson!

    • @noiseof3889
      @noiseof3889 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, got the old compression ring off with a puller and used the new one. I had to tighten it really tight because the old one grooved the copper. No leaks after two weeks, but the pipe will need to be cut next time.

    Having replaced exactly one of these valves (thanks to this video) I would say you may not need to de-burr (I didn't). I think you probably absolutely need a compression ring, because it seems to me that this is what keeps the assembly from leaking. Think about it -- you're not sealing the fitting, you're just sliding a few parts over the pipe that sticks out of the wall. The compression ring must be doing the job of sealing it.

    • @Dracossaint
      @Dracossaint 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what the brass fitting is basically

    • @goodbyspam
      @goodbyspam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pipe from the wall did receive the compression ring to make a seal there however the flexible line did not need a metal compression ring because the flexible line has a rubber gasket that makes the seal for the flexi-line.

    • @DoomDuck1
      @DoomDuck1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should de-burr the pipe. Not de-burring copper piping leads to water turbulence inside of the system

    I would add that I was on my cell phone to my wife in the bathroom in which I was replacing the valve when I turned the water on again at the street. That turned out to be a good thing, because it leaked at both the valve and at the toilet when the water came on, and she could tell me to turn it off again. Based on what she told me, I tightened things a bit more, and the second time things went fine.

    Can you easily remove/replace the decorative escutcheon if it is rusted, prior to replacing the replacement valve? My plumber told me that "since a compression valve is involved there would be "lots of work, and destruction of the wall" to replace the decorative escutcheon:. I think he is lying. Could you weigh in?

    • @tonymanero5544
      @tonymanero5544 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anne Arjani If you want to replace escutcheon only, it would requiring removing the valve and reinstalling it. It the valve is old or a multi turn one, replacing it with a quarter turn valve would make it worth doing and replace the escutcheon. But to replace just the escutcheon is a lot of work if the valve doesn’t need replacing.

      Alyssa longchamps i feel the same way for the 1/2 turn im pretty aggressive when tightning on a new angle stop valve but you can always do a pull test cuss you and i know theres alot of pressure on that angle stop valve.

      I way over-tightened mine with the first attempt which resulted in a very slow drip leak, and a damaged pipe under the compression nut. I had to cut the pipe, solder on a new extension, and start over. My second attempt was exactly as described in the video; hand tighten, and then wrench turn a little more than half a turn more. Worked perfectly and no leak

      I'm not a plumber but whenever I tighten bolts I never go by "half turn" type instructions but instead feel for the "bite" when the torque seems to have been just right. It feels like the turning stops and then mushes in just a little bit as it bites.

      @@seanharris7546 Yeah, that's about right in my experience. Not sure why "deburring" the inside of the pipe is necessary, but possible they are thinking of the physics of a burr slowing down the flow or a small piece of copper getting caught in the valve. Ok, i talked myself into deburring :)

    great, now I know how to do it and not pay to have it done. I thought I had to know how to solder the copper pipe.

    Just open the lowest water receptacle in the house… unless it just so happens to be the one you’re working on and the water’s still draining out of it 3 hours later.

      Good thing about compression fittings, pipe doesnt need to be dry to install, just open valve and let it drip while you tighten nut, than shut valve when done.
