As a skydiver I wonder if there's any regulation or agreements when flying with a bunch together in the air about who has right of way or is everyone just flying wherever they want? In skydiving, where you can be in the air with anywhere from 5 to 20 together under canopy (larger number are possible but these are typical load sizes) it usually the one below you has right of way meaning you can just dive below him. At lower altitudes, for landing everyone starts flying the same pattern (usually in a square left turn pattern with base leg perpendicular to upwind landing direction). This vid here seems like everyone flies where they want with the sole safety measure being to just "look out" for traffic. Seems iffy from a skydiver's perspective.
Another thing here is, we under our canopies only go down and have no visibility as to who's flying above us (hence the lower flying canopy has right of way) but a hangglider can fly up and likewise you also have little visibility upwards (the whole wing thing above you) so how does that work? You fly up and hope nobody is in the neighborhood above you and if there is somebody you just expect him/her to move away?
Hey Fly Beep... thx for your comment and the questions... well-- you are absolutely right: their are , of course, rules- but the main rule is to watch out- all the time. Since we fly a bit slower than a falling skydiver... normally around 35-60km/h fast forward up to 120km/h ... we might have a better overview than you guys as well. So: lower before higher. right before left (if you are next to obstacles like a mountain you have to dodge the one with its right wing facing the ,mountain and during races their is a turn direction in the thermals. And if not: you have to look out for the first pilot thermalling. In this video their are around 70 pilots - right after the start waiting for the race to start it may seem a bit confusing- but... everybody knows what he/she is doing and lastly : mid air collisions are a very rare event during hang gliding. jamesnm21 indeed. To avoid head-on collisions everybody has to turn in the same direction when flying in a thermal. And obviously when you're going to make a turn you should first look around :)
