This is southern rock at it's finest. The flute solo at the beginning & end is great. Love their music from the 70's. Some of their other big hits were "Fire on the Mountain" & "Heard It in a Love Song". Southern rock fiddler Charlie Daniels did quite a few collaborations with them.
Marshall Tucker was a blind piano tuner who used the band's studio to restore and tune old pianos. The group never actually met the real Marshall Tucker. They were in a warehouse trying to come up with a name and one of them noticed that the door key to the warehouse had the name Marshall Tucker on it and he suggested that might be a good name, not knowing it was a real person. The real Marshall Tucker passed away in 2023 at the age of 99, and never got bitter at the group for using his name without his permission. When someone asked him about it, he said he didn't mind "as long as they kept making good music".
John, you are a lucky man. Ms. Lulu makes me miss Olongapo and the Barrio's. Unfortunately last time i was there, 1987. Thank you for doing Marshall Tucker Band.
Take note that Toy picks the guitar with his thumb... fastest thumb in rock. He was a Marine wounded twice in Vietnam but refused to come home because he wanted to stay with his men. Gone now so RIP Brother.
I had the same thing happen to me with the hook of a song getting stuck in my head. The summer I turned 6 it was big on the radio, and I remember driving to the beach with my best friend his little sister he Mom and Dad to meet my mom and sisters and friends and family that where invited. It was hot out the song was playing. We were in the old 1963 Volvo PV 544 Round back. I remember the back seat smelled like PeanutButter and we were all eating ice cream cones and talking as the song played. That song was “How Do You Do” by Mouth & MacNeal was a major hit in 1972. I could never remember more than the hook but in 2018 my daughter herd me humming it again and knew it had always bugged me, so she spent a day listening to songs from 70-75 and found it and got an original autograph 45 on Ebay.
Toy Caldwell not only a great singer and guitarist but a bad ass decorated Marine coming back, with a Purple Heart, from Viet Nam requiring him to take pain killers for his injuries and this addiction led to his early death.
When the band had an opportunity to open for the Allman Brothers Band, they had to pick a name on the spot. As it turns out the key that let them into the building they were going to be playing in had a keychain with the name Marshall Tucker on it so they decided they would use that name for that night, and the name stuck. The real Marshall Tucker was a blind man from South Carolina with God-given talent on the piano. The band paid tribute to him when he passed away in January 2023 at the age of 99. If you don't know of bands that use a flute in their music, check out some Jethro Tull.
I got to see them at Harrah's Lake Tahoe just before the world ended 2018 and they still killed. Needless to say, the ones still with us are a lot older now. Aren't we all? Fun fact: There is a Marshall Tucker. He was a blind man friend who didn't want the attention the band was getting. He distanced himself from the band. Absolutely, no hard feelings.
I worked on a sit-com set back in the early 80's, and a friend of mine that was our sound tech traveled with Marshal Tucker Band for a couple of years as their sound man..of course they are called audio engineers now .just brings back alot of great memories...
Your Marshall Tucker Band Line-up - Toy Caldwell - Lead Guitar & Vocals ( Note Toy's style of playing . He picked with his thumb earning the nick name "The Thundering Thumb of Toy Caldwell " ) , His Brother Tommy Caldwell on Bass & Vocals , Doug Grey , Lead Vocals on most of their songs , George McCorkell - Guitars & Vocals , Paul Riddle - Drums & Jerry Eubanks on Flute & Keyboards .
This is one of my biographical songs. Everyone has had heartache, but there are times when it hurts so much you do want to act out what this song is about. They got their name from a rental receipt on a piano they were looking at in a rundown store, and later on they found the actual Marshall Tucker and struck up a friendship. Pretty please, do more MTB.
What should we react to next from The Marshall Tucker Band?

Absolutely Fabulous Band!
Went to high school with the band members. They showed up and played our 10th high school reunion in 1976,
MTB has been my favorite band since the 70’s! Seen them multiple times and had the pleasure of meeting and visiting with them in 2017.
Music was so good back then, I’m 61 from Alabama, it was good times…

Toy Caldwell singer, guitarist 3 tours in Vietnam and a purple heart. Pure talent and a hero.
Just a little ole band from the Upstate of South Carolina. RIP Thunderthumb 🇺🇸. It’s a travesty they’re not in the R&R HOF

My fav southern fried rock band.
Hi John & Lulu, I never went down south but I know this band. The name came from a piano tuner that always helped them called Marshall Tucker🎹🎶
Lots of guys got Dear John letters in Vietnam but some of them didn't even get one..
AWESOME 👌
🔥
I love the soulful feeling that he recognized by a woman's control over men

Everytime I see the lead singer he remind me of Elvis...
i call it Soul food
no pick fingers only
Since you recently reacted to Weird Al’s newest song, you should react to more of his music since you also reacted to “Eat It” and “Fat.”
Used no guitar pick.Finger picking.
You guys speak English but do you understand English? The girl walked out without saying goodbye
He wrote this song after seeing fellow Marines getting "Dear John" letters while deployed and how it messed them up.
Jelly Roll does a cover of this without guitars, just a piano. There's a live in-studio video of it on TH-cam. Check it out sometime.

Black Stone Cherry did a better version of this song.
Nope
@davidteller7681 Yes. The guitars are better and the singer has so much more soul in his voice. Plus they punched up the song.
