Upper hand is actually a really good move that no one is abusing in the current OU meta. With all the priority in the tier it’s such a good anti meta tech. I made a virizion team with SD, trailblaze, sacred sword, and Upper hand and man the team has surprised that crap out of me how much work it puts in lol.
The issue is that it's also similar to sucker punch.... but with harsher conditions. Like, it only works against priority moves... so if your opponent doesn't use one, you can literally waste a turn. It's more of a gamble than sucker punch was....

I'm so happy to see Hitmonlee getting some love. He's always my choice at the Fighting Dojo in Kanto. He's always been luck based with High Jump Kick, so I love the dancing on the razor's edge and it literally being a coinflip at 1 HP on if your opponent uses a priority move or not. Very true to the nature of Hitmonlee.
I am genuinely shocked at how little I’ve seen Upper Hand used and talked about. It saved me in the DLC, but leave it to the GOAT Hayber to pick it up and run with it.
It’s not used very often because it’s VERY reliant on guessing correctly. It fails if the opponent doesn’t use a priority move, so if you try to call the priority move but they use a normal move, you get punished heavily. Not every Pokémon has a priority move, and not every Pokémon runs one, and not every Pokémon is going to use a priority move in every turn. It’s not a horrible move, just very, VERY situational.
@@Poptomist it depends on your knowledge of pokemon movesets and what they could be running. Ofc a good player will bluff you into thinking a priority move is coming and use aa normal move instead, but if you have the knowledge you can really see where the opponent is going with his switch

I got into comp pokemon through Showdown a few months ago after getting burnt out on mainline games around Gen 7 and mostly just playing ROM Hacks since then. I decided that to keep myself sane, I'd handicap myself by playing monotype in OU ladder and because I really like team building, I never so much as glanced at Smogon-- imagine my surprise when I discovered this move, one of the few new moves that doesn't feel like a direct upgrade to an existing move (looking at you, gen 9 starter signature moves!) and fits my mono-fighting setup perfectly. I proceeded to make the filthiest Hawlucha Red Card sweeper of all time and have been having a blast with it since then.
I run this same set with Blaziken, but instead of upper hand to deal with priority, I was using an indeedee to set terrain. I should add upper hand and free up the indeedee slot! The only problem is if upperhand doesn't kill, the next move is a game of who outplays who.
I love Hitmonlee and hate how some older pokemon can't keep up with the new ones. This new moves proves that the old gen one pokemon can still pack a punch.
