Yeah well, I'm Asian and this is normal from what I've seen... my mother does this all the time. I've learned to ignore it, most of the time. I have 4 children that I've raised mostly on my own and I'm still "a terrible mother" when she's the one who walked out on us
You know what's funny? I just saw a clip teaching people how to recognize a manipulator, and contradicting themselves like this is one of the first signs. Along with shifting blame ... and so on.
“I gave up everything for you” don’t ever say that to a child or anyone for that matter. You give on your own free will. If you’re expecting ANYTHING in return you’re just conducting a business transaction. Parents love to create retirement plans by having children and telling them things like this.
Right! When you decide to have a baby, you put yourself in a situation where if your going to be a "good mother" you will need to make the neccessary sacrifices for your child. You are obligated to put your own wants to the side to take care of that child until the child grows up and are able to take care of themselves. In order to be a good parent, that may or may not involve you to give up almost everything to make sure the child lives a safe and stable life. So a parent needs to stop using this "I gave up everything for you" as a bargaining chip.
There is nothing wrong with her saying that if she did. She just shouldn’t use it in a manipulative manner. A good child, male or female, would soon find this out when they have their own children and are good parents to them.
Exactly my mom does the same thing and when I said she did t have to she says stop turning this around on me and that I should be grateful. It gets exhausting having this argument all the time.

I thought she was beautiful and a great actress, but the scriptwriters made her character thoroughly unlikeable with all the jealousy and the constant self-comparison to Rose. Would have just been better to have Rose as a one-off and had the doctor pretty much asexual like he always has been. What a powerful scene. The person who wrote it deserves so much applause. This is a reality in African families(I will say African because I am one) that we don't talk about. Mothers who tear down their daughters over and over again and continue perpetuating generations of hurt and cruelty. I have seen this kind of pain that no one wants to acknowledge. They will tear you down for being loved by a father, for not getting married at the time they want, for not getting married to the man they want, for not having the kind of children they want, the career they want...it kills you slowly, death by a thousand cuts.

Saying they're narcissists, is an understatement. I do love her terribly because she's my mother, but I also told her I refuse to be abused anymore, as I just turned 62 and prefer joyful and positive people to surround me.🙏💖 years old
I see mother-in-laws doing that to their son’s wives, never seen such done to a biological child as an African. Yes we have mothers who could be too much sometimes but not to such extreme. I personally, my sisters or friends have the most supportive mothers out there. Sorry you had to go through that and just anyone. I grew up with a mother like this. Anything you say can and will be used against you. Anything will be rewarded in the form of an insult. When I lost my job and tried to get my old job back, which I left on good terms even writing everybody that worked there a thank you letter for my time there and the company was unable to take me back at that time. My mother told me I wouldn’t take you back either. The company did take me back later on so it’s good to know that my job is more forgiving than my own mother.
Yup, my mother always cursed me (it always feel that way to me) "wait until you have your own child" everytime I didn't do anything she want. And now, she didn't understand why I don't want to get married or having children. I always wish I could shout at her "because I felt that you always cursed me to have bad children and bad marriage!!"

My mother spreads nasty things about me... not knowing for sure, just feeding off of any negative reports concerning me... She doesn't like to hear anything positive. If she does, she turns it for bad! Not sure why God allowed me to born into that family 🤔
I broke apart from a toxic family member many years ago and never looked back. As a kid, I "had" to go see them because they wouldn't stop bugging my mom and didn't want to keep us a part. Plus, she was a single mom who needed all the help she could get if no one else was around on weekends and school vacations. Since she knew they were toxic and I stopped wanting to go to their house by the time I was ten, Mom understood and assured me everything would be alright and it would be over before I knew it. They were just so manipulating, emotionally abusive, a liar, vain, refused to listen, and could not let things go. When I started college and going through a very stressful first two weeks, they would not stop texting, emailing, or trying to call me. After they sent me a text on a night I was at my most stressed out, I called my mom and told her what happened and that I was done with them. I couldn't take it anymore. She understood and was very supportive of my decision as she was doing it too. The last time I saw them was five years ago for a funeral service. Ten years since I cut connections with them.
The funny thing is, they train you from a very young age to be susceptible to being treated this way. It's a lot harder than you think to break free from:( worse, they isolate you, you become afraid to be around people because they might see what "garbage" you are too, so you cling to the one person who was "always there for you" and "put up with you". I can't tell you how psyche shattering it is, but I can tell you this; my dad shot at me, SA'ed me, killed my puppy because he delighted in seeing me distressed. But the majority of the damage I still suffer is from is from having a mother like this. That's how insidious that damage can be. Took me a very long time, but I don't speak to her anymore. You CAN break away from them, if anyone else who had a narc parent reads this. It's scary but it WILL get better, very soon. ❤

No, some mothers are a chore. They are a burden we endure until they die then we get to spend the rest of our lives recovering from their abuse. I had 2 who were sisters so I got double trauma.
I've cut my mother out of my life as best I can. It's not worth the pain thinking they will change. It's not worth the agony of constantly changing yourself to fit what they want. We will never be good enough. When we realise this and start to let go of that relationship they can't hurt us in the same way anymore. There's still pain but it's so much less.
Best decision I ever made, was removing my mother from my life.. when trying to open up to her again, I truly learned how much better it was without her... never looked back ❤

Who the heck told my life to these writers?!!!! But seriously, my mom did the same thing. Drove my father out of the house. I remember plates, knives, anything she could get her hands on, being thrown at him. Afterwards, she would say that he left because he didn’t love us anymore and he was happier with his new family. In my mid 20’s he was diagnosed with stomach cancer so severe that nothing would help. He called asking me to see me before he passed. I was so filled with rage, I said no. I did visit him though because of other circumstances. Came to find out, my mother just filled us with lies about him when me and my sister were young (which did not surprise me at all). Now my dads dead and I don’t speak to my mother at all.

My son has been introduced to 6 step dad's in a 7 year span confused as to how women are supposed to carry themselves with men. Keep in mind that my son is kept by his mom for a monthly premium. I got a job, I have my own place and wouldn't take a dime from her for my son if my son was with me. He is my son my seed and responsibilities. I remember at 8 when I discovered I had a different dad than the one that was living in my house and raised me. She lied and said he abandoned me as a baby. I found court documents when I was 12 or 13 and found out how hard he fought for me. I also found out that anytime my bio father was in the same area as me my step dad would chase him away so I wouldn’t meet him. And you wanna know the shiftiest thing of all. Every Christmas my mom had the chance to take me two seconds down the road to meet him because he lived two seconds away from my grandmas house. She had every fucking opportunity to introduce but the only way I found out was by reading her marriage papers to my step dad at 8 and finding out on my own that the woman who claimed to love me has lied to me for 8 years. Now at 21 she continues to lie I’ll bring up stuff she’s said and she makes me thing I’m crazy by saying “that never happened you’re remembering it wrong”
I was blessed to have a mother who let me see my dad for who he was. She never kept him away, even tried a relationship so he was in our life. But at 16 I saw him for his true self. He was a selfish liar that only used women. He had a wife in Texas and a girlfriend in Tennessee and then dating my mom in California(My dad was a truck driver) he died alone in hospice and at his funeral no one had nothing nice to say.
My mom did the same. She spoke highly of how good he use to be but his new wife showed us who he truly was. He had other children that he never mentioned to her. She was so eager to let them know that he never mentioned them. He chose not to meet his grandchildren My Mother was awesome. No support financial or otherwise but we made it.
I learned recently my great great aunt was in a similar situation. I don’t know the details, heck that was the first time I learned I HAD a great great aunt, but apparently she was married to a man for three whole years before discovering he had a whole other wife in another town.

Ive watched on a loop for ages! This is so accurate it kinda hurts! My first stepfather was a great guy and he really stepped up when he married my mother at 25, taking on a 5 and 3yo gladly. Then my mother cheated on him and basically gaslit him into agreeing to just leave that night without saying goodbye (clean break). I spent the rest of my childhood acting like her therapist and consoled her when i was 8yo because she sat there the next morning sobbing and made us believe that he abandoned us. She moved her affair partner in a month later.
@greenwood.1163 I did actually! After 17 years since we'd last seen each other I reached out to him (having cut contact with my mother). He was ecstatic and said he'd never stopped thinking of us as his children. We still talk and visit now.
So glad you cut ties with your mom and finding your dad and yes HE WAS your dad bio don't mean everything my husband is an amazing father to all our children including his non biological children 😊

I was 3 when he came into our lives (the whole first year daring her he spent as a stay at hone dad with me) and the 5 years he was with us were the best years of my childhood
My dad's mom who raised me manipulated me against both of my parents as well as my dad's wife and her kids It's been since 2009 since I got away from that woman and I am still having to weed through all the lies I was taught to figure out what's true and what's not Turns out she was mostly right about my mom but not my dad and not my step mother and her kids
And on the flip side my saint of a mother was always adamant that I should respect and love my dad when he treated her like crap (I didn't find out until later on by piecing up stories from family members) and now that he had a stroke she's still taking care of him, so I make sure to take care of her and let her know everyday that she's amazing ❤

The greatest thing I ever did was raise two Sons since they were six and ten years old. They are adults now. They are Men I am so proud of. They have grown into amazing Men. I would have never had my own biological children. However raising them was even better. It has been the greatest joy, source of happiness, best investment of time or money, or source of love that I could have had. I had a bad mother, a negligent father, and siblings that either were not part of my life finding out I exist in the last year, or not good people, or who just doesn't care if you exist. I have the family I choose now, and it is wonderful...
This reminds me of my mother. She always recalled how my father left but she threw him out. I remember even at a young age screaming and arguing and it turns out I was right. Even the closest person you may think is your best-friend can turn out to be a lier.
One of the ways that I know my mother is the best is that, even if I know she gave up everything for me and my brothers, she never told us that, and she would do it all over again.

WEIRD SOUNDS JUST LIKE MY MOTHER. Gets a restraining and no contact order on my dad when she divorced him while he was in prison. Convinced me my whole life, he abandoned us, never cared, could care less if his children died bla bla bla all things she repeated for THIRTY YEARS. Who has been there for me while my mother has verbatim told me to go drop dead. And that im worthless....? My dad. Do your own research IN EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE. My mom filled my head with NOTHING BUT LIES for 25 years and waking up to it as an adult in my late 20s has been devistating. My entire reality was bullshit. All the things i fondly remember or was scared of.... running away from my dad when he showed up a couple times at my school to talk to me because he was willing to risk breaking the restraining order to try and see my brother and I.... it was all bullshit. Not him showing up, but running away crying. My mom literally told me at 6, 7 and 8, that my dad would steal us, if he saw us he would kidnap us and take us to Greece (where he is from) and that we would never see our mother again or the rest of out family members, friends school. I would shock most people just repeating other things my mother has done and said to me. While turning around and brainwashing me with repetitive phrases my whole life, "i dont lie, im not liar, ive never lied, other moms would never do this for their kids, you think bla blas mom would drive them where they wanted to go? You think this or that persons mom would buy them this or that? Every single time. And if i fucked up from ages 11 up im worthless, im a piece of shit ive been told i should go die, drop dead, you belong dead in the gutter with your fricken gutter trash friend! (That one i never forgot, not that it was only said once...)

In the show, it's implied that her memories about her father are misconstrued and that her father did indeed walk out on the family. The trauma was so great that the daughter "chnaged" how the event played out subconsciously
And THAT'S typically the reality, mothers bearing the brunt even after doing all they can for their children, and these ingrates still have not even an ounce of gratitude - as demonstrated by all these hateful comments towards mothers. Sometimes what you see is not really the true pictures of things. Some fathers have truly walked out of their children and as age starts knocking on the door, they begin to look forward to seeing those children that they had once abandoned again
Yep. It be like that with a ton of single mothers. Mine also told me that my father didn’t love me every time I went to go visit him. She told me also that he wasn’t paying child support….But no years later I recognize that my father’s actions proved that he loved me, and later him AND the man he betrayed as a friend also confirmed that not only was he paying all his child support…But that the courts mandated that he pay more then the average man despite my father making very little money. I don’t talk to her now because this is far from the most hurtful things that she has done to me

This just gave me flash backs to when my mother she said my father never wanted me to exist and that I wasn’t loved by my dad because I was a mistake. The thing she forgot to leave in was that she would neglect and emotionally abuse her children but at my fathers I could eat food without worrying that it was going to run out and there would be no one home to get food and I could speak and joke with my father and actually feel loved. Mothers, don't let your child or children suffer and cut the fathers in their lives. Most especially if the father is willing to co-parent or still be present. I work in the psychology field, the number of people I came across with telling me their hurt and hate over their mothers who lied about their fathers, incredible heartbreaking.

I purposely ignored him, didn't call him on his bday ...didn't find out until he died April 4th 2022 that my STEP FATHER KEPT HIM AWAY on purpose. And my stepfather emotionally abused the entire family. Great provider but stand off-ish father. Mothers dont realize when they do things like this, us coming around IS A CHORE! You can't get time back! Children aren't asked to be born...don't blame them/us for "ALL the sacrifices " you made. Children don't need that guilt trip!
Yeah, but in this case, the father actually DID leave. He abandoned her after cheating on her & leaving to stay with his other family. The mom cut him off. She was just traumatized & blamed her mom instead, since she was the only parent she could blame. She blocked some bad parts of her life out. Dad was the villain
It’s definitely not a black mother thing. Just that in other communities it’s done differently. In the white community girls love saying how their mum will always comment on their hair. Look at the show friends how Monica’s mum was always criticising her. Same in Gilmore girls. And there many other exemples. It happens in real life.

“I gave up everything for you” don’t ever say that to a child or anyone for that matter. You give on your own free will. If you’re expecting ANYTHING in return you’re just conducting a business transaction. Parents love to create retirement plans by having children and telling them things like this.
Right! When you decide to have a baby, you put yourself in a situation where if your going to be a "good mother" you will need to make the neccessary sacrifices for your child. You are obligated to put your own wants to the side to take care of that child until the child grows up and are able to take care of themselves. In order to be a good parent, that may or may not involve you to give up almost everything to make sure the child lives a safe and stable life. So a parent needs to stop using this "I gave up everything for you" as a bargaining chip.

What a powerful scene. The person who wrote it deserves so much applause. This is a reality in African families(I will say African because I am one) that we don't talk about. Mothers who tear down their daughters over and over again and continue perpetuating generations of hurt and cruelty. I have seen this kind of pain that no one wants to acknowledge. They will tear you down for being loved by a father, for not getting married at the time they want, for not getting married to the man they want, for not having the kind of children they want, the career they want...it kills you slowly, death by a thousand cuts.

I grew up with a mother like this. Anything you say can and will be used against you. Anything will be rewarded in the form of an insult. When I lost my job and tried to get my old job back, which I left on good terms even writing everybody that worked there a thank you letter for my time there and the company was unable to take me back at that time. My mother told me I wouldn’t take you back either. The company did take me back later on so it’s good to know that my job is more forgiving than my own mother.

I broke apart from a toxic family member many years ago and never looked back. As a kid, I "had" to go see them because they wouldn't stop bugging my mom and didn't want to keep us a part. Plus, she was a single mom who needed all the help she could get if no one else was around on weekends and school vacations. Since she knew they were toxic and I stopped wanting to go to their house by the time I was ten, Mom understood and assured me everything would be alright and it would be over before I knew it. They were just so manipulating, emotionally abusive, a liar, vain, refused to listen, and could not let things go.
When I started college and going through a very stressful first two weeks, they would not stop texting, emailing, or trying to call me. After they sent me a text on a night I was at my most stressed out, I called my mom and told her what happened and that I was done with them. I couldn't take it anymore. She understood and was very supportive of my decision as she was doing it too.
The last time I saw them was five years ago for a funeral service. Ten years since I cut connections with them.

The funny thing is, they train you from a very young age to be susceptible to being treated this way. It's a lot harder than you think to break free from:( worse, they isolate you, you become afraid to be around people because they might see what "garbage" you are too, so you cling to the one person who was "always there for you" and "put up with you". I can't tell you how psyche shattering it is, but I can tell you this; my dad shot at me, SA'ed me, killed my puppy because he delighted in seeing me distressed. But the majority of the damage I still suffer is from is from having a mother like this. That's how insidious that damage can be.
Took me a very long time, but I don't speak to her anymore. You CAN break away from them, if anyone else who had a narc parent reads this. It's scary but it WILL get better, very soon. ❤

I've cut my mother out of my life as best I can. It's not worth the pain thinking they will change. It's not worth the agony of constantly changing yourself to fit what they want. We will never be good enough. When we realise this and start to let go of that relationship they can't hurt us in the same way anymore. There's still pain but it's so much less.
Best decision I ever made, was removing my mother from my life.. when trying to open up to her again, I truly learned how much better it was without her... never looked back ❤

Who the heck told my life to these writers?!!!! But seriously, my mom did the same thing. Drove my father out of the house. I remember plates, knives, anything she could get her hands on, being thrown at him. Afterwards, she would say that he left because he didn’t love us anymore and he was happier with his new family. In my mid 20’s he was diagnosed with stomach cancer so severe that nothing would help. He called asking me to see me before he passed. I was so filled with rage, I said no. I did visit him though because of other circumstances. Came to find out, my mother just filled us with lies about him when me and my sister were young (which did not surprise me at all). Now my dads dead and I don’t speak to my mother at all.

My son has been introduced to 6 step dad's in a 7 year span confused as to how women are supposed to carry themselves with men. Keep in mind that my son is kept by his mom for a monthly premium. I got a job, I have my own place and wouldn't take a dime from her for my son if my son was with me. He is my son my seed and responsibilities. I remember at 8 when I discovered I had a different dad than the one that was living in my house and raised me. She lied and said he abandoned me as a baby. I found court documents when I was 12 or 13 and found out how hard he fought for me. I also found out that anytime my bio father was in the same area as me my step dad would chase him away so I wouldn’t meet him. And you wanna know the shiftiest thing of all. Every Christmas my mom had the chance to take me two seconds down the road to meet him because he lived two seconds away from my grandmas house. She had every fucking opportunity to introduce but the only way I found out was by reading her marriage papers to my step dad at 8 and finding out on my own that the woman who claimed to love me has lied to me for 8 years. Now at 21 she continues to lie I’ll bring up stuff she’s said and she makes me thing I’m crazy by saying “that never happened you’re remembering it wrong”

I was blessed to have a mother who let me see my dad for who he was. She never kept him away, even tried a relationship so he was in our life. But at 16 I saw him for his true self. He was a selfish liar that only used women. He had a wife in Texas and a girlfriend in Tennessee and then dating my mom in California(My dad was a truck driver) he died alone in hospice and at his funeral no one had nothing nice to say.

I learned recently my great great aunt was in a similar situation. I don’t know the details, heck that was the first time I learned I HAD a great great aunt, but apparently she was married to a man for three whole years before discovering he had a whole other wife in another town.

Ive watched on a loop for ages! This is so accurate it kinda hurts! My first stepfather was a great guy and he really stepped up when he married my mother at 25, taking on a 5 and 3yo gladly. Then my mother cheated on him and basically gaslit him into agreeing to just leave that night without saying goodbye (clean break). I spent the rest of my childhood acting like her therapist and consoled her when i was 8yo because she sat there the next morning sobbing and made us believe that he abandoned us. She moved her affair partner in a month later.

@greenwood.1163 I did actually! After 17 years since we'd last seen each other I reached out to him (having cut contact with my mother). He was ecstatic and said he'd never stopped thinking of us as his children. We still talk and visit now.

The greatest thing I ever did was raise two Sons since they were six and ten years old. They are adults now. They are Men I am so proud of. They have grown into amazing Men. I would have never had my own biological children. However raising them was even better. It has been the greatest joy, source of happiness, best investment of time or money, or source of love that I could have had. I had a bad mother, a negligent father, and siblings that either were not part of my life finding out I exist in the last year, or not good people, or who just doesn't care if you exist. I have the family I choose now, and it is wonderful...

Do your own research IN EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE. My mom filled my head with NOTHING BUT LIES for 25 years and waking up to it as an adult in my late 20s has been devistating. My entire reality was bullshit. All the things i fondly remember or was scared of.... running away from my dad when he showed up a couple times at my school to talk to me because he was willing to risk breaking the restraining order to try and see my brother and I.... it was all bullshit. Not him showing up, but running away crying. My mom literally told me at 6, 7 and 8, that my dad would steal us, if he saw us he would kidnap us and take us to Greece (where he is from) and that we would never see our mother again or the rest of out family members, friends school.
I would shock most people just repeating other things my mother has done and said to me. While turning around and brainwashing me with repetitive phrases my whole life, "i dont lie, im not liar, ive never lied, other moms would never do this for their kids, you think bla blas mom would drive them where they wanted to go? You think this or that persons mom would buy them this or that? Every single time.
And if i fucked up from ages 11 up im worthless, im a piece of shit ive been told i should go die, drop dead, you belong dead in the gutter with your fricken gutter trash friend! (That one i never forgot, not that it was only said once...)

All I will say is that separated parents, especially mothers cause more emotional or physical damage to their child and hurt them most. That’s the expression of anger 😠 they hold for the father of that child…..it is inflicted on the child
In the show, it's implied that her memories about her father are misconstrued and that her father did indeed walk out on the family. The trauma was so great that the daughter "chnaged" how the event played out subconsciously

Her mother had a responsibility to , at least , encourage a relationship with her father. It's so important to have a father in our lives. Mom sounded very bitter and purposely salvaged the relationship between her daughter and her father.

Yes, sthe dad did not abandoned them, it was her that kept them apart. She never accepted any contact from him because of that. The saddest thing is he was already dead when she found out the truth.

Sacrificing for a child doesn't gives her the right to be awful to her daughter. In fact don't look at it as sacrifice because I would give everything in a heartbeat for my children. A child is a blessing, whatever sacrifice is worth it. And certainly must be done with true love, not something good they expect in return.
Sometimes what you see is not really the true pictures of things.
Some fathers have truly walked out of their children and as age starts knocking on the door, they begin to look forward to seeing those children that they had once abandoned again
Yep. It be like that with a ton of single mothers. Mine also told me that my father didn’t love me every time I went to go visit him. She told me also that he wasn’t paying child support….But no years later I recognize that my father’s actions proved that he loved me, and later him AND the man he betrayed as a friend also confirmed that not only was he paying all his child support…But that the courts mandated that he pay more then the average man despite my father making very little money. I don’t talk to her now because this is far from the most hurtful things that she has done to me

This just gave me flash backs to when my mother she said my father never wanted me to exist and that I wasn’t loved by my dad because I was a mistake. The thing she forgot to leave in was that she would neglect and emotionally abuse her children but at my fathers I could eat food without worrying that it was going to run out and there would be no one home to get food and I could speak and joke with my father and actually feel loved. I don’t care if what she said may have been true or not I hate the fact she continued to make me feel like I’m worthless by bad talking my dad even though she was never there.
Side note: I don’t hate my mother I just can’t forgive her for the things she’s done
Mothers, don't let your child or children suffer and cut the fathers in their lives. Most especially if the father is willing to co-parent or still be present. I work in the psychology field, the number of people I came across with telling me their hurt and hate over their mothers who lied about their fathers, incredible heartbreaking.
Just because he is leaving YOU doesn't mean he is leaving the children. Being your man and being their father are two separate things. Women need to accept that.

Common theme that divorced women do and I've seen the sweetest women turn bitter and do the same thing just to hurt their ex, not caring at all about the child but making sure to destroy the relationship, the bond between the father and child, it's truly sad when love turns into hate, or I should say when love is drowned and swallowed by hate
