It’s not just making the food. It’s what’s behind it. When I got my heart broken, several years ago (long before I got married), the woman I was working with wasn’t exactly a nurturer, but she could se that I was in pain. I was barely eating and she wanted to do something to help. So, she made me a sandwich. I wasn’t really hungry, but I ate it anyway because she was showing me that she cared. Thank you again, Robin , wherever you are.

That's very sweet. ❤ Alot of ppl use making food as a way to show they care; maybe they can't get the words out, maybe they don't even know what words to use. But food is a universal comfort. I hope your heart is doing better now ❤❤

When my dad was going through chemo, he wouldn’t eat. I would pretend I was hungry & eat something I knew he liked in front of him, eventually if only a few bites at the time he would eat. He always said everything tasted better if it was on my plate!

When my dad died suddenly, I stopped eating. Didn’t eat for at least 4-5 days until my dad’s mom made me some lasagna. My dad used to make it for Christmas dinner every year, and I loved it so much. She didn’t force me to eat, she just placed some in front of me and told me “you don’t have to eat. But would you like to sit and talk?” And over the course of a couple hours, just talking about whatever, I started eating. Of course, I immediately bursted into tears after one bite because it was always my dad’s lasagna. But yeah. Don’t try to force people to eat when they went through something traumatic. Just comfort them and try to help them feel normal.

The key to helping a traumatized child is to give them some control. Speak to them like any normal conversation, special attention makes the interaction a manipulation, and gives the impression of ulterior motives. The reason she ate is because no one was pressuring her to eat, the choice became hers to make. When people tell her to eat, the only control she can take is to refuse. He gave her control of the food, and she did what she wanted with it.

Actually the tragedy in her family was a reason why she didn't eat but also later in the movie it was said to be one more reason. Her aunt (the female cook) who is a cook in a fancy restaurant made her eat fancy dishes she made (something like a whole fish with a salad). A child her age just didn't know how to eat this kind of food. At this moment her auntie's friend from work (the male cook) realised the problem and gave her a dish she knew. This way he helps the aunt and the niece get along and make a real family.❤

Its quite a easy fix when it comes to psychology. Kids are animals I mean so are we but we operate different as adults. its fine to... suffer and suffer but children takes special care. I work with adults only mainly addicts and well people that are beyond the point of help. For me I rarely care anymore Its nice to see them smile but you just simply dont care anymore cause they are a waste of space and wont ever do anything in their life. At that point when they are that damaged im willing to let them go. sounds horrible yes but.. to put it like this someone I deal with has cost the system more than 10 million here in Sweden. while I cant get a time to check out if I might got cancer. Yeah little bit that they can just off themself at that point.

This seems very cruel. Addicts are people too, and technically operating off the same biological system that you mentioned children do. It's very simple to understand with your psychology- they are seeking serotonin and/or dopamine in the fastest, most effective way they've experienced so far. That'll screw someone up, but they can and do recover with proper help.

Something i noticed about how this was filmed just now.
Everything the aunt made for zoe was seperated plates of food. She made duck and some veg and other things and the meals were on her plate signifying disconnect between zoe and the aunt. Aaron eckharts chef character mixes up a pasta dish where all the ingredients are swirled together not sectioned on the plate. And he eats out of thag bowl and shares the bowl directly to zoe creating a connection. Kids eating off your plate is literally in child bonding development. And zoe lost ALL OF THAT when her parents died she needs to start over from square one
Edit: holy crap I didn't expect people to vibe with this comment like at all I've seen this movie too many times to count only cuz I like to cook and it's cuz of other film channels giving me a new lense to watch movies through and pick things up like that. The sad thing is many women think men are not very caring compassionate people it is quite the opposite. Most of us would protect a child with our life even if they were not ours. I help a lot of mentally teenagers in my free time. Kind of a act volunteering reaching out to younger people of my generation. I to struggle with my mental health on a daily basis so this helps me as well. The thing a lot of men struggle with is we give more than we receive and sometimes we loose ourselves peice by peice. If I ever have children I do not want them to suffer the brokenness I had growing up into a man. I grew up without a father my grandfather took over that roll and did the best he could but much of the damage was already done. I am still picking up the pieces to this day.

Then one stopped coming and the rest followed, they stopped when there was no one to impress or brag for, so it went food for only 5 days a week then 3 days then no one came, my dad didn't care, he ate at work and he came home late when we were already sleeping, there was no money in the house and the only groceries my dad would get are milk, eggs and bread and he ate most of it for breakfast anyways, he never cooked us a single meal, he would make his food too spicy so we won't eat from it, me and my 5 yr brother survived on bread for two months cuz no one really cared least of all my father, if my mom had died when we were young we probably wouldn't have had another homemade meal until we were old enough to have our own money and make it ourselves, and we were financially well off, he just didn't care whether we ate or not, to him we were ok we eat bread, we are not starving so all was good for him, if my mom had died he would have left us eating bread till we were old enough to move out without a single shred of remorse.

This movie pulls at my heartstrings. I met my first real love on the first day of freshman year in undergrad. He immediately caught my heart, I got his number from my friend who had gone over to talk to him, and we went out to dinner together at the school cafe. The next night he was suicidal, a bunch of friends were there, we called security, some coumselors showed up, it was a whole thing. As soon as i heard from my friend that they couldn't find him, i ran from track practice, dropped my stuff in my dorm and sprinted to find him. After he was talked down, the small group of us went back to watch this movie in my dorm. We'd established the night of our first dinner that we liked each other but weren't ready for a relationship, but that was the night I knew i loved him.
Things between him and I didn't turn out well as things got toxic and we just simply weren't meant to be. We talk every now and then. Some part of my heart will still love him in some way no matter how much I try to forget him. I simply can't just try to forget people as that is unfortunately who I am. But this movie will always reside in my memory as a good and troubled time in my life.
Edit: thanks for the few likes this has gotten, this is a hard story for me to tell. I fixed the typos for clarity. He & i don't talk anymore, i stopped texting back, cuz it's better for my mental health. Things ended poorly and he's not worth my time. Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear, but life isn't always sunshine and rainbows, sadly.

Had a student 5yo and he wasn't doing good physically or mentally his parents died and he lived with grandparents and he didn't talk to anyone, no teachers, students, not a single peep, sat alone, didn't eat, didn't play, just sat there watching everyone. Broke my heart hearing about him when I started working there. A week in he got hit by a toy thrown by one of the autistic kids and everyone paid attention to the other kids but I ran to check on him, he was bleeding on the head. I took him over to be cleaned up and I was talking him threw everything and asking if he was okay, and as I do with all my students "do you need booboo kisses?" He looked at me and started tearing up. And nodded and so I rubbed my forehead against the side of his head and said mmwah. And he hugged me and started crying and said thank you. He started talking and doing a bit more after that. It broke me when I quit because my boss was a bitc%

I did this with a little girl at a daycare I worked at. I was 15 and she didn’t want to eat anything. Her mother had told me that morning that she refused to eat. She said we could offer her the packed lunch she brought or the daycare lunch she didn’t mind as long as she ate something. She sat away from all the kids and I quickly realised she didn’t like eating in front of people despite being only 4 years old. I knew exactly how she felt. So I grabbed two bowls of food (the staff were allowed to eat alongside the children as that was the only time we had for lunch) and sat right next to her. I started eating and I had her smell and touch each thing on her plate. Her mother had told us that she didn’t like using utensils because her cognitive issues didn’t allow her to hold them properly. While sitting next to her I turned around and pretended I was just watching the other kids. She started eating. She had just watched me eat the same exact meal and I glanced over at her and she was eating. I used the daycare iPad to send her mother a picture of her eating and she was astonished. When she came to pick her up she was so grateful. I told her to let her use her hands and let her eat alone because that’s how she preferred it. She ate every day after that

After plating just a small amount, i'd say "you don't have to eat it all" but she would. I learned after, the reason she was able to eat every day was because i'd made it from scratch, plated & took it into her, had she even had to think about what she was gonna eat, she would've gone without cus even the thought was too much & tired her out.

Okay this hit too close to home.
Like legit this is way too close for me.
First proper dish I learned to make was spaghetti bolognese (like in the clip).
I learned it from my aunt, learned it the same exact way she made it.
I was too young to remember but she had some kind of medical condition that made it so she couldn't walk without at least crutches and she would be dead by 40.
She died at 39 when I was 8.
We were at her house after the funeral, just me, my little cousin who lost her mum and a couple of my other cousins.
I got into the kitchen, remembering her on her raised chair by the bench.
    Always smiling.
Sub consciously I just started making spaghetti.
When I was done I served a plate to each and every one of us.
We were about halfway through when I looked up and saw my little cousin crying through her food.
To this day at 25 I can still make it the same way.
My little cousin occasionally asks me to make it for her.
She tried to learn to make it from me but she could never grasp it. Most likely cause I'm a terrible teacher because I'm an instinct chef.
But when it's Christmas and we're spending it with our family, one of the days she's down she'll always ask me every year to make it.
Every time she'll cry, knowing it was the same taste.
My spaghetti objectively tastes better since my aunt would make hers with too high of a pasta ratio and make it too runny.
But my cousin will always prefer her mother's version over my own and I will never blame her for that.

When my maternal grandmother and grandfather both died, my mother was an absolute wreck. While she was grieving, I asked her what was one childhood dish she was nostalgic for. It was Worcestershire pork chops, and knowing her mother she probably boiled or simmered them in the sauce, so alot of room to improve.
I marinated the pork for the whole day with garlic and thyme along with some mushrooms, dried off the pork and seared it before using that same marinade to make a glaze to toss em in. While the mushrooms I skewered n broiler and make some asparagus too i.e more comfort foods. Her first bite out of the pork though she said hit her so hard, like she knew it wasnt what her mother made but nostalgically it was everything she remembered about it.
Both me and my brother have slowly been trying to rebuild old recipes from her parents, stuff that either we clearly remembered like Tim's baked beans, to stuff that only she remembers like the Sicilian ragu
Food is such a big comfort. Even if it can be done better, sometimes ya just want it like how ya remember it.

When his mother TOOK HIM from me for 2 weeks and then I only had suppervised visits ( I’ve never had a speeding ticket but when you are whoring around and are the one who’s causing all the problems in the family you
lie to make the father look bad)
He has recovered some from it
But he still fights depression and anxiety and probably always will
He’s 22 now and it happened when he was 10
He had been by my side since the day he was born
So lady’s if you have a good husband who works hard and doesn’t drink or do drugs
He’s always at home after work and does all the things he can with the kids
    If you want to leave
    Then
    LEAVE

Its actually a "technique" which was briefly nicknamed the "naturally trusting stranger"
Brief interaction "What does this smell like to you?" or looking at a picture then showing them, a "This is my Dog (insert name)
he/she is really cuddly" that sort of thing. Make that object/picture/etc seem important to you. Then ask them to hold it while you do something else, tie your shoes, whatever. Then take the object back and ask what they think, "Doesn't (dog name) look cute, what do you think?"
So, it plays in the childs mind like this - this person is talking to me, this person has asked me to hold something of value, this person is genuinely asking for "My" opinion. With a kid that wont talk, for almost any number of reasons, it engages them into talking to you.
The "trick" to the technique is, being 100% committed and following through. Youre bringing them into talking, but its on their terms.
If they dont respond to this first time. separate for a while (to go do something) then return with a "Hey, youre still here" approach.
The main thing to it is, showing trust, interest and actually following through. Being the person they can talk to, until they start talking to people in general.

Back in 2020, I had severe depression. I lost my closest friendships. And for a while, I did not eat enough. It got so bad that just eating became painful to do. Every time I swallowed it felt like I was going to puke. I had to keep at it until my body broke the habit of eating so little. Now, my eating habits are back to normal. But I'm scared of what happened back then. It's frightening to think that extreme sadness could cause you to starve yourself like that. I hope I never need to face that again.

I am so impressed by Abigail Breslin. She is 28 and has already been acting for 20 years, and she is really good in every role. She is not someone that I tend to watch for, like I don’t actively follow her career, but I every time I see her in something I keep thinking, “she is really good”. I feel like she isn’t fully out of her child acting career, like I want to see her have a fully adult role as a lead in a big project, because I think she would do really well. So I am excited to see her in more things.
