    I just happened to run into your channel. It is a pleasure to watch your videos! I wish I had access to this video three years ago when I had to change my son's Zuke's engine. It took me four days to change the engine, but another five days to get the darn car started, all because of the position of the distributor!

    Be sure to watch his camshaft timing video, I did everything he said but I had to set the 5 degrees in the opposite direction. That would be 5 deg to the right side of zero. Anyway I hope this helps someone. BIG THANKS TO MR COOK.

    Hey! Keep up these good videos! I just bought a 1994 and these types of videos are going to come in handy! I took a chance on mine since it was down 1 cylinder. It turns out #4 was dead but new plugs, wire, rotor and cap fixed the issue. I just need to figure out my low idle now...

      Sorry Irving, I have no clue. I have never even seen that particular engine. You will probably need to buy a service manual.

    i mean where each wire goes to from the left to right,
    ow its when were facing the distributor,

      So the other day I said your pict. Was a little dark.HA ! That's apparently the least of my daughter s problems.looking at the dist.as per your directions. First aligning the marks on the body and the shaft. When marks are aligned ,the rotor is pointing about half way between ,one and three.best I can tell there is no way to align marks,and no.one.any ideas?

      @@MerrickSpalding-hl7rg I am assuming that the camshaft and distributor were not removed. If that is correct then the solution is to remove the timing belt, align the cam and crank marks and then put the belt on without turning the cogs. I show that process in a couple of videos.

    Hi Frank Bruce here . So if your E is at the top you turn the crankshaft 180 and set your rotor at #1 ?

      No. The camshaft pulley is exactly double the crankshaft pulley. With the E perfectly aligned with the notch in the valve cover and the marks on the crankshaft pulley and block also perfectly aligned then it will be top dead center on both cylinder 1 and cylinder 4. At that point you must remove the valve cover to see which is on TDC of the compression stroke. You can tell by looking at the cam lobes. Either cyl 1 or cyl 2 will have the lobes of the camshaft pushing on the rocker arm pad. The other one will have all the rocker arms off the lobes. The one off the lobes (all valves closed) is the one on the compression stroke. If it is cyl 1 then it is wrong and you have to fix it. If it is cyl 4 then you are good and continue by turning the crankshaft exactly one full turn. This will put the E mark down and cyl 1 will be TDC compression stroke. Now insert the distributor as described so that the rotor lines up as shown. It should be close enough to start the engine and make final adjustments. Look at my later video, I think it is the last one or second to last in my head rebuild series. I showed the process more clearly I think.

    I have a 95 Tracker with the 1.6 16 valve motor and I had the distributor out. When I put it back in I noticed a tiny braided line like a grounding strap coming out of the distributor plug in. It's only about 4 inches long. Not long enough to reach the firewall. It seems to run without it but I feel like it should be hooked somewhere but can't find any obvious mounting location. There is another ground wire for the distributor seperate from this braided cable. Any idea of its used and if so where does it go? Thanks.

      Never seen anything like that in any of my engines. Just the main electrical socket and a single ground wire to the body. I have no idea. A wild guess is maybe extra ground to the block somewhere.

      Sorry, I don't really know about your model, but if it has a 1.6L 16V then I am pretty sure it would be the same. Best if you have a service manual. Check geopink.com. Also, you can confirm by checking the camshaft lobe positions. All 4 lobes off the rocker arms is TDC of compression/firing stroke.

    Hi Frank i have g1.6b 16 valve moter but my E mark is up the top and at compression stroke it's different to what you are showing i have set the roter to number one spark plug . But won't fire. I have checked for spark at the spark plug plenty of spark there but won't start and i checked for fuel any idea's

      As far as I have read all of the G16B (Same as G16A with a 16V head instead of 8V head) have the same camshaft. I did chat with one other person who thought his was different so I don't know for sure. The best way is to take the valve cover off and check cam lobe positions. First line up crankshaft marks and with valve cover on make sure the E mark is lined up exactly with the notch in the valve cover (not off by even one notch in the belt). Then look at the cam lobes. On mine and most that I have heard of then all the lobes will be off the lifters on cylinder 4 and the distributor rotor will point down at spark plug #4.     Hi Mr Cook i have a 1996 suzuki sidekick with a 1.8 4x4 . i took it to the shop to get the timing chain , oil pump and water pump replaced and now the mechanic cant start it . I thought it was the timing that was off but he performed a compression test and said it cant be because it has compression , it has spark, and fuel too so im stumped and i was wondering if you or anyone else has any pointers that might be able to help i would be really grateful thank you . i cranks and tries to start but sputters and wont .

      Your car has a lot of differences to my model, but based on your description my first guess is that the timing is off like you thought (regardless of the compression). The timing belt could be one notch out of alignment (very easy to do), the distributor could be installed improperly, or the cam and crank improperly aligned (common mistake).     the jump in the video and the jump in the book do not match. is it D and E or E and F?

      At 7:19 in the video I show the picture in the book. Jumper goes in D and E. Make sure the plug clip is up as you look at the holes and then put the jumper in the bottom left and bottom middle. It worked for me.

    Will the distributor affect spark? In other words, I don't have any spark therefore can the distributor be the problem or the computer?

      The spark comes from the battery (low voltage) then to the coil that changes it to high voltage and then to the distributor that controls when it sparks. No spark at all means one of the following: bad connection in distributor or bad wire from distributor to coil or bad coil or bad connection to the coil from battery or from ground. Test each of those and you should be able to find the problem. Good luck.

    Hey just courious where is that plug? I have been looking for that plug for hours. All I can find is a 4 plug not a 6 plug on mine. Do you unplug it from something or is it just layn there?

      You are talking about the one with the jumper wire, right? It is next to the battery and had a little rubber cap on it. Should be the same for any '93, '94, or '95 model. Other model years could be different. What year is yours?

    Hi Frank . Bruce here . I watch your video all the time . Do you have to stop the vacuum to adjust your timing ?

      No. There are only two vacuum tubes. Neither effect the timing. Both are controlled by two small solenoid valves on the front of the intake plenum. One is the EGR which remains closed at idle and the other is for the vapor canister. I did have to short the two terminals on the ecm end plug. I showed that in the video, right. That disables the the electronic timing advance. Don't forget to remove the jumper wire when finished.

      Pictures and vids are a great way to get things put back together right, especially when doing something for the first time. That is how I got started making these videos. The best way though, is to really understand how and why each part works so that you really understand how it is suppose to go together. Getting the camshaft and distributor all lined up properly gives a lot of people problems because they are just not really sure why each part goes the way it does.
