- On Tuesday 2 May 2017, the entire student body paid tribute to Mr Jimmy Crosswell with the school haka as he was carried from College House. Mr Crosswell was extremely proud to be a teacher at PNBHS, a College House master and was very fond of the school haka. To our students - we are so proud to have you at PNBHS and your respect for Mr Crosswell that is displayed through this haka is very moving for us.
Mr Crosswell has been part of the PNBHS teaching staff since January 2014, and a College House Master since January 2015. As well as teaching English and Social Studies he was involved in establishing a mentoring programme for young men facing academic challenges, and had a real empathy for those students who were struggling in some aspect of school life. Mr Crosswell has been heavily involved in school co-curricular activities, especially as a cricket, rugby and rugby sevens coach, and through involvement in the outdoor education programme. As a College House Master he has been heavily involved with the young men who live there. In these capacities Mr Crosswell has had personal involvement with many young men and parents in our school community.

Danilo Rangel there’s a great haka performed by I think the same school for a teacher who retired, the entire school hall plus upper circle at back perform. That’s something else entirely.

@@apomtaylor8054 I have realized it is a traditional cultural manifestation. Too bad I wasn't able to see the Haka being performed firsthand while I was in Auckland 15 years ago. That would've been incredible, I know. But I can say I do have profound respect for it.

I went to a school where I was one of about 5 maori kids and even everyone in that primary school knew their local tribes haka.
some public schools do, in most bilingual is optional. Well it was in my day. Most New Zealanders do not practice tikanga and majority of maori do not speak their own language. I grew up in multiple communities where racism was an acceptable practice.
The way the leader slows it down then lets the boys unleash their emotion and passion is beautiful

5 years later and still Freaking outstanding. One of the things that unites Kiwis abroad - when you hear the haka, you know your soul comes home to Aotearoa, New Zealand. Ive heard it in China, South Korea and even in Cambodia - it still makes me think of home. USA with the Patea Maori Club with Te Reo Maori songs became hugely popular, the All Blacks with their haka, Te Reo is huge in Europe now with Alien Weaponry making it big abroad and all our artists who proudly display their art regardless of which discipline. Good on you New Zealand, Keeping it Kiwi.
You can hear the passion in every single student for their teacher. They should be proud of themselves.

I'm sorry, dude or dudette, but a haka is not a haka without the screaming. The haka is supposed to psych up Maori warriors for battle and to give themselves mana (spiritual energy). A haka with no screaming in it is not a haka at all rather it's just a perversion. It'd be just a bunch of fools doing weird movements. You say it would be more formal without the screaming, that is absolute nonsense. I'm sorry, but it's true. Also, sometimes screaming and getting angry in a positive manner is probably one of the best ways to mourn. These kids are mourning the death of a beloved teacher. They're not going to cry (though I'm sure some of them did) but they're going to honor him in the best way NZ culture has. In summary, I think you're absolutely wrong in this scenario

I went there and the teachers were toxic and racist af despite how much they seem to embrace multiculturalism. Their institution is still run by coloniser christian fundamentalism
