I actually did this method and my hair stayed curly for a whole week! After that, it started getting wavy! I never stopped playing with my curls.

+Gemz Wood Because it strips the natural oils which keep our hair healthy. Sure, if you sweat lots or use too much product then wash more. But if you have normal to dry hair then it is much more healthy to only wash once or twice a week.

As a little girl my best friend was mixed race and i was obsessed with her curly hair, i was constantly trying to talk her into wearing it natural because it was soo cute. Broke my little heart every time she straightened it. She never understood me, because she wanted stick straight hair like mine, and i was like What?! My hair sucks. Doesnt hold a curl, gets greasy easy, tangles like nobody's buisiness, boring.

Bella Mercado it does. I use to do this all the time. Try it with strings which you can make from an old shirt you never worn.
Gabriella Lira you have to sleep in it overnight. Plus it depends on what kind of hair you have. For people with wavy hair, it takes leaving them overnight, and the curls come out the next day.For people with straight hair, it take a whole day, and two night before you can take them off. If you have to keep them on a whole day, I would suggest getting a shirt with the same color as your hair, making strings, and use them on your hair instead of straws.

You can use strings from a destroyed shirt instead of straws. It is actually really comfortable to sleep in with cotton strings than straws.

😂😂😂 yeah shrinkage is real girl...I usually blow dry the roots for elongation or pineapple it. As the days go by, your fro will get bigger

Been doing this for years. Barely remember my natural hair. I considered a perm but I like choosing the curl level each time.
I know I'm very much late but my hair is 3a but I want curls like 3c or 4a so, if do this frequently will it remain like this permanently
Both your curls are lovely! Next time, consider using flex straws but using the bend at the start of wrapping. You might also want to use some type of styling gel to keep frizz at bay.

I've ALWAYS hated stick straight hair cuz that's what I was born with. Ugg. But....I must say......I would have loved to see you two work with your hair more on camera and work it out. Cuz both of you guys's hair looked gorg!! And it was perfect for each of you!!

Never brush curly hair unless you want a fro! Haha once I grew out my hair, it was back to curly, and now I remember why I chopped it all off. Mine frizzes up in 10% humidity.

if you want a variety of size curls, there's things called perm rods, you wrap up your hair like on the straws, bend them and they keep their shape overnight without having to pin them or anything. works on thin or thick hair, wet or dry, curly or straight :)
I was shocked at how curly it turned out. My hair really takes curl, I'd probably end up with a fro.
I've done this and it works so amazingly well, but it's super difficult to do alone. Also takes a ton of straws, at least for me. I used more than double what my friend did even though our hair is the same length

You can cut strips of cloth and do the same thing... it's called rag curls

If you guys are going to try this i would suggest (ive experimented with this method for a while now) to cut the straws so when you wrap your hair theres like half an inch of straw on each side. Then use a bobby pin and put one end inside the straw and the other end over the hair so it clamps it and do the same on the other side. It really helps
When my hair was long my mother used to take strips of muslin and wrap my hair in it. Somehow they always came out even and Shirley temple like. That is really the only way I can curl my hair. These turned out so neat with the straws!!

Back in my grandmom's day there wasn't any "heat" methods of getting curls. ( curling iron / rod). She used to do the same method with wet / damp hair and cut strips of fabric like cotton and then do the same process. The fabric is more comfortable to sleep on. But you get wonderful curls that stayed for days. Also, smaller sections of hair and closer to scalp gets tighter/ smaller curls - more hair ( bigger sections) gets you loser curls.

its easier if you fold the strws in half after you wrap the hair. then tie them together with an elastic. i do my girls hair like this every 3 days they love it.

you can also rag tie your hair like this method with wide strips of paper lunch bags when hair is damp, it gives a large bouncy curl look. although it's noisy because the paper strips crunch and make a lot of noise. but at least it's less pokey than straws. still a neat idea though!
We use rags. Much easier to put in, more comfortable to sleep on (but not as nice as usual of course!), and works just as well. So basically you tear up an old rag into strips, wrap the hair around it and tie it off. Just like with the straws, but no bobby pins required, and softer. Make sure you start rolling from the end instead of the scalp - that will secure the end into the roll.

Did this last night and slept the whole night through - use a net wig cap to keep everything in place. I also trimmed the straws. That made it much easier :)
Those are amazing. I would love to see how you guys would style that, especially on the shorter hair. You could also probably use thicker straws as well.

If you pin the top of your straw to your head, and you clamp the bottom end with another bobby pin, it's a lot easier (especially if you have long hair) than tying it. And it's also more comfortable to sleep in, because it's more of a straight line as opposed to the little straw bumps when you tie them. And, if you have a really soft pillow (or one of those big, soft stuffed dogs as a pillow) then it helps you not to feel the harshness of the straw so much.
This is great though, I love doing this.
I think this is so cool, it looked like natural curly hair when you played with it a little bit, the volume was insane! If I didn't know you guys had fairly straight hair I would assume it's your natural hair type. I think this look is great if you want to really change up a look or see how you'd look like with a tight perm. Really cool Holy Grail!
