- Papua New Guinea has been described as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for women. Some estimates say that 70% of women in PNG will be raped in their lifetime.
Ben Zand travels to the capital Port Moresby to meet the men who believe violence against women is acceptable - and those women who say enough is enough.

It is actually very dangerous for him to get straight to the point when dealing with criminals. Confidence and integrity no longer matter when the risk involves someone getting hurt.
People who negotiate with criminals know they have to get to the criminal's good side while getting the most out of them. That means dropping their sense of values and judgment temporarily for the criminal to let their guard down and allow them to share more intimate descriptions of their atrocities.
I am so happy this is put out there for everyone to see. I am a Papua New Guinean girl. I live in the capital city Port Moresby and in every neighbourhood their is always a SA, GBV, and DV case. Most people dont do much when that happens. If people hear a lady being beaten by her husband they dont report it to the police or stop it. They say things like "oh em maret life, lusim ol" (oh Its marriage life, leave them alone). Its heart breaking really. People like those men are found all over the country. They are horrible people, they perve on little girls and raise their sons up to be just like them. However not all our men are like that. My generation, i can see have very respectful young men who know how to treat women. Its only the ppl who are in the rural areas who need to change their mindsets. They believe it to be culture and tradition to do such acts. Men have power, the last say. So sad I however am fortunate to have a loving father who is conpletely inlove with my mom and a respectful brother. I thank God everyday for having them.

I love that actually a real person from Papua New Guinea is commenting and giving true and genuine insight about PNG. I am from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Far away. In Southeastern Europe. But i am fascinated with Papua because it is a truly magical ecosystem with unique plants and animals. I like the biodiversity of the island. I wish i can come and live there. I assume alot of it is undiscovered, alot of plants and alot of animals. Thank you. And do you have some strange stories, sightings of animals, legends, practices or habits of people if you want to share i am happy to hear it. Thanks.
@@hardver8855 PNG is indeed a very beautiful country with extraordinary wildlife and culture. You have to come and visit when you get the chance! You can travel up to the cool, green Highlands or to our sandy tropical coasts. We have 22 provinces and each province has their own culture, stories, myths, languages and not forgetting the gorgeous traditional attire we wear when we dance for our festivals and Independence celebrations (Sept. 16). We have the biggest Butterfly, Queen Alexandra birdwing, the Dracula parrot (my favourite), pig nose turtle and the Bird of Paradise species (so unique) just to name a few. Hopefully I convinced you to come and visit.

@@hardver8855 I have lived there for two years and I can tell you, it's definitely an experience you will remember for life. It's extraordinarily beautiful, like seriously incredible. I've seen so many breath taking landscapes and flying in small propeller planes through the vast valleys is sooo rewarding. I've been to multiple islands as well due to my parents working as doctors there.
There are things that you should absolutely consider though: Keep you shit safe, my parents have been robbed countless times there and back then I used to visit a local school which received a bush knife attack, one of out teachers died in that incident and multiple people had their heads, arms chopped off by these rascals. A friend of mine that I had back then was killed by the father, his dead body was found in a nearby river, I only heard this heart breaking news when I was in Germany. Sandy, a very friendly girl I used to know was cut multiple times by a bushknife by the father, the same one that killed his own son btw.
What I'm trying to say is that PNG is so beautiful and it's such a shame that it's filled with crimes and rapes and abuse against women. I loved my time there but I wouldn't have minded a bit of safety and a bit of security, many times I felt very unsafe and in danger.

as a fellow papua new guinean I can't say that what they are doing is right, it's completely WRONG! But it has been normalised for centuries, it's almost kind of like a tradition to physically abuse women. So when these men say that they "love their wives" I'm sure they have some type of affection for them, but hitting them doesn't mean anything to them because it's something that most men in Port Moeresby do.

I'm a Papua New Guinean male and this report is not bias, it is true. Generally most men here are very weak. Papua New Guinean men must watch this and change from their approach towards women and bad behaviors.

I lived in Papua New Guinea from 1994 to 1996. I met an Australian couple working there and they had a horiffying personal story to tell. Their 5 year old daughter was raped by their security guard. I had nightmares for almost a month after that.

Documentary like this dealing with sensitive issues, there will be always authorities in place to assist. They won't go on their own and started filming without the knowledge of law enforcement agencies..

In the New Guinea Islands region, women are more respected because we follow the matrilineal system, in which mothers, girls and women are highly respected because of their status as land owners and they also have a say in the community besides men who were mostly the warriors,in a traditional and tribal setting.
We still do highly respect our women,thou we do have men who are so narrow minded,that all they think of is violence.
It's Sick. And it has to change.

I'm sad to see my countrymen do these things to their wives and family. I believe we all need a change in our mindset first. It starts with every individual, then to our family, community and the country. In doing so, we can change to live healthy lives. I know not all men in PNG are like this but those who are into such practices have to really stop and change for the good of their wives and children.

In my country Kenya, there was this Papuan man, a diplomat who beat up his Kenyan girlfriend very badly and if I remember correctly he was stripped of his diplomatic immunity and deported. Strange kind of men.

I was born and went to school in PNG. Yes, this form of mentality well it is part of our culture being a half PNGean myself, I was almost influenced by this kind of mindset since I went to public schools and grew up and was surrounded by my PNG side of my heritage. When I left for my Fathers country and had more exposure I realized we must change. I'm just happy to see more and more younger generations now going to school in other countries and even in my Father's country. Education is the key in breaking off this kind of mindset for us. Better education is the key. More exposure is the key, and ofcourse more rights given to women is a big factor. I hope when I go back to the motherland I would see a difference.

No words can describe my overwhelmed feeling for the actions of these men towards women.
I do not agree with the police officer said it is part of the culture -- this is totally a blurred cultural knowledge transfer.
As a West Papuan man, I believe we as new guineans share many cultures in common. Yes, there exists such thing of being a 'big man' in our tribe, but I think many of us have misinterpreted its core value. Being a big man in my culture is about protecting houses/ communities/ tribes from outsiders (enemy), NOT to react violently to the members of mine. Please please please New Guinean men (both PNG and WP) whose such violent behaviour, think -- you will NEVER be a man if your mother did not give birth to you.

I met a papua new guinean drug dealer type guy once in Europe and honestly he was one of the creepiest guys I've ever met. He looked at me like I was a slab of meat, I was genuinely so scared of him. Didn't know PNG was like this until I watched this though... now it makes sense.
Not every part of PNG is like this, I come from PNG and the area I come from is very friendly, it is up near the hills not to close to Port Moresby

I worked in Port Moresby for 4 years, there were crimes like robbery, murder, petty fights etc. During my 4 years of service life, I felt like I was in a terrible jungle.

thanks for showing this video. My sister from Fiji and her Scottish husband lived in Port Moresby for around 8 years and was juz glad they never experienced any violence from the locals themselves as they had high security around them all the time. Unfortunately for the locals, they have to go through torturous moments by MEN; MEN who don't deserve to be alive!!! Death penalty should be the result of such treatments of women by this hellish PNG MEN!!!

I spent a couple of months in PNG in 2017. I was in Port Moresby and in the mountains. I am not going to say it is not dangerous, because it is. However, reading some of the comments here, I just want to say that I met some of the most truly beautiful and honest people in PNG. Its a unique country that can only be described as a dangerous beauty. The country has no linked road infrastructure. Interestingly, roads seem to go from mines in the hills.... straight to the Port. The Chinese have been particularly altruistic in supporting PNG. I don't recommend it as a holiday destination.
What about coming in some groups for like exploring, expedition hiking style jungle trip? Is it safe or? What the country has to offer regarding the plant and animal world. Flowers,fruits,animals,food etc. How do ypu describe it and what you saw??

As a Papua New guinean, I glad i didn't grow up with family like. I grew up with Strict Parents and grandparents that go to church daily. This is truly sad.

I travelled around PNG back in the 80s, I went all over, Port Moresby, the north coast, the south coast and through the central highlands. We were warned that it was quite dangerous especially in the city where all the young men would come to 'make their fortunes' and bring their rural culture with them. I guess we were very naïve but fortunately nothing happened to me or my female companion. Such a beautiful country but it seems to have gotten more dangerous. We saw villagers fighting with bows and arrows but they seemed to ignore us, thankfully. Watching this is heart-breaking, it makes me so sad.
I love how upfront the journalist is. He tells it to the men’s faces that what they do is incredibly wrong. It’s still unbelievable how many of them are justifying their actions. It’s disgusting.
Several years ago, I spent few days in Port Moresby before going in a dive trip... Weird place, intimidating at night... One of the best places to dive in the world! Betel nuts slows down this country... 😔

Hi i'm from Png. Yes i really am, yes i know some things are bad but we are really friendly people . were not all rapists or violent, its just those who have the wrong mindset. It's disgusting.and life is hard but its not as bad or its not typically like that as potrayed by Western media outlets.you're average market vendor makes about k200.00 a day. ( k stands for kina which is our currency). Which is about $200.00. We are good people not all of us are like those idiots. Its a great place, and to me it will always be home. Always. The place isn't bad, the people ruin it. I have a great life here and i am surrounded by family, we have a great community here in the neighbourhood were i live. Yes its true it is unsafe but there's a strong sense of community and everyone knows everyone. The city's capital Port Moresby is not safe, especially for tourists or foreigners who are not used to that kind of life. However, the other Provinces are great and generally much more safer. To me Png will always be home. 🇵🇬🇵🇬 ❤❤

I'm a PNG girl and I know what your all thinking right now after watching this documentary that PNG men are so evil and cold beings, but not all of them are like that. There is still good in this country, also bitting and sexually abusing women is most definitely not our culture. I as a child of PNG know that there is and always will be good in our souls, its true that some men bit their wives but not all of them. So before you start judging this diverse country come and see with your own eyes then you may judge us, like I said violence against women IS NOT OUR custom nor is it our tradition. Some men do have respect for women and Care for their well being but those that abuse women are not men! Their just lost souls that don't know about our wonderful Savior Jesus Christ. PNG is also a Christian county too! Yes, not all Of US are bad. Sure we may not be the most riches country but we are rich in our unique and beautiful cultures, we are a freedom nation!! Tell how many countries allow people to preach the word of God in the streets of the cities, unlike some countries wer're allowed to preach the word of God!!! PNG may not be the most advanced countries but if you actually go to the villages you will see that we are just like everyone else. I know that our government is not that fare when it comes to bringing justice, but all we as the people of PNG can do is pray to God to guide our nation to the right path. Thank you!! 💖🇵🇬

Why are you so butthurt and defensive? The program never generalized all men and the country. It was a documentary about the reality for many in PNG. You are trying to divert by saying " ...we are rich in our unique and beautiful cultures, we are a freedom nation!." It's irrelevant for the 70% of women who are rape victims also victims of violent assaults in a country where this kind of behavior is largely normalized. Are you kidding me?
