My chess pieces finally have a home! Two days after every project I have a follow up video on my second channel. Reply here with questions if you have any. If you don't like this video please click here --> th-cam.com/video/S3I5XcsReT0/w-d-xo.html
Superb. Great editing as well - makes it come over as a very calm, relaxing build...:) With the chessboard veneers, does this mean you will be selling a few of these?
WOW. What an awesome piece of work Jay. When you re sawed the top checkered piece and when you slid the lid on, towards the end.......I caught myself sitting in front of the monitor with my jaw dropped and my mouth half open. Great video....as always
AWESOME job Jay you knocked this out of the park. I like how you have the one miter still attached to the board so when closed all four miter come seamlessly together.
My 9 year old and I sat and watched this twice today...he's a huge chess fan and keeps kicking my butt. Loved your final product, and your videos are getting really good! Not saying they were not before, but they really have a great polish to them. Appreciate you sharing your talents.
For real watching you go from all power tools and almost exclusively working with pine it has been awesome seeing you transition to include hardwoods and hand tools. Keep it up.
You were the first channel I got into when I got into woodworking, with the bunkbed build being the first video I watched. I love that video because of the cadence with the music and the production quality. This video reminds me why I love watching your content. Thanks for all the great videos.
Wow! Amazing craftsmanship, not just on the woodworking, but the video production, too. I appreciate the care and attention to detail you pour in to your work. An inspirational start to my Sunday! Thanks Jay!
Beautiful work Jay. I made one many years ago except the board was fixed and the game pieces were stored just like yours but in a drawer under the under the board.
Beautiful work brother. Great thinking to use the plywood to protect against expansion from the hardwood pieces. Incredibly impressive how far you've come from working out of the apartment to your garage. You work just gets better and better.
Great video Jay! I half expected you to spin those chess pieces out on that lathe and do a little intricate carving. Always a pleasure to watch your channel
That is so cool, and very well executed too! I especially like the idea of using the chequerboard as a thin veneer on regular plywood as then there are very minimal movement due to humidity changes to contend with! And the finished article looks very nice indeed! Well done Jay!
Nice work. I'm a cabinet maker myself. It's been too long since I've spent time on projects like this. Lovely work, fantastic workshop, and over all the video was an absolute pleasure to watch.👌
Very impressive Jay. This project highlighted your meticulous attention to detail and proper preparation and planning. Truly a work of art. Stay safe and creative brother.
jay youve gotten so good. youve come a long way from glue it and screw it. bless you for keeping the craft alive. also.. some matching pieces would be really cool
Very nice! I like how the board slides out to store the pieces. I just made a chessboard from walnut and maple.....don't have a thickness planer or joiner but enjoyed hand planing and orbital sanding. Takes time but a very satisfying project!
It's been truly wonderful following you over the past few years, watching you evolve as a woodworker and a content creator has been a blast! Keep up the amazing work Jay!
I've been working with wood for about 20 years now. I'm self taught. But I'm not sure if I'll ever get as good as you. You do great work and inspire me to do better work. Love the videos.
awesome job! I remember a while back you said you wanted to step up your game in one of your videos.... clearly you have achieved that..... extremely nice job! beautiful!👍
Your videos are superb. Incredible craftsmanship, fantastic choice of music. The videography and how you match your cuts to the music are really great. I find it quite relaxing to watch you work!
Major change of pace from your normal build vids. I love both styles. This one reminded me of a Chris Salomone build. Very nice build and video. Thanks for continuing to create content for us.
beautiful work and chess board box....one thing i might add would be some type of material laying and glued inside the bottom part of the board that when the box gets moved around the chess pieces wont be clanking around or maybe foam inserts for them something as such....beautiful work once again.
Your woodworking skills are honestly what I hope to achieve someday. You are a true inspiration and your video skills and ability to capture the art so beautifully is amazing. Keep up the excellent work!
Jay, Fantastic music choice and editing! I love you going back to your old style of syncing the music to the cuts in the video. Obviously not every video should be done this way, but I love seeing it from time to time. The project came out beautifully! It makes me want to get my shop up and running so I can make the chess board I keep picturing in my head. All in all one of my favorite videos you've done. Thank you for the time and effort!
First, both the design and the execution of this project are flawless. Second, the video itself is a very nice piece of production work. Well done!! I just subscribed to this channel. Thanks.
What an great video. Thanks for sharing. I'm new to wood working and really enjoyed watching some of the more intricate details / cuts. That certainly isn't the most simple box to create. Job well done.
Amazing work and a nice video, but most of all after almost 30 years in cabinet and furniture building i have never seen dual miter gauges used as a sled like that. Thank you as i will noe be using this trick often. Good job young man keep it up.
Mate, all the way from the land donwn under. Cracking vid. Little more Frank Howarth in this than your normal stuff. Love the contrast on your channel now between super casual vloggy videos, tutorial type clips and then all the way to this. Mr Bates, doing a cracking job.
Wow, one of the best videos you have ever made. I really enjoyed the almost "Mr. Chickadee" like serenity. The box and chess board are really beautiful. Masterfully done, both.
I've enjoyed your work for a while now, but this video is fantastic. Bravo. Also, that's maybe one of the most beautiful pieces I've seen you make. All around fantastic. Thanks for what you do.
I watched this when it first came out and LOVED it. I was just listening to the podcast and April reminded me how awesome it was so I had to check it out again. This is a great video, the editing is awesome and the project is gorgeous. Great work once again and thank you so much for sharing Jay.
Jay, outstanding video and project. Been watching your channels for a long time now and your skills, both with the woodworking and video editing, are exemplary.
Nice... really really nice. I love to watch your videos. I have gleaned so much from you. I really appreciate your style of woodworking and your sense of what makes a good video. Thank you!
Really liked the style of this video Jay, and it's a lovely piece - nice one. Great to see the mix of power tools and hand tools - and I'm a power tool guy saying that!
Jay, I have been following you for a long time and really enjoy all of you videos. This one is by far your best edit to date in my opinion. I got enough information to build the project myself and it was delivered in a very thought out , artistic way. Bravo!
Great great video Jay. I remember this music from your compressor/welding cart build. I liked it so much I downloaded it. It goes even better with this build.

Jay Bates all I have to say you are very talented, this was a great video thank you for sharing. Most Excellent in my opinion!!
Jay Bates had to click the link even though I love the video. :-) :-)
Superb. Great editing as well - makes it come over as a very calm, relaxing build...:) With the chessboard veneers, does this mean you will be selling a few of these?
great piece, a question, why the top part (the checkered panel) has to be so thin? is it to minimize "movement" of the wood?
Dude, everything about this is absolutely incredible! The project and the video!
+Make Something thanks 💪👊
Ikr
Dude, that is incredible work. You are really taking it to another level lately. I absolutely love the no-voiceover style every once in awhile.
What an amazing edit Jay. Of course it's an outstanding build as well but I love the music and cuts of the edit on top of it.
April Wilkerson when is your twin going to help you.
WOW. What an awesome piece of work Jay. When you re sawed the top checkered piece and when you slid the lid on, towards the end.......I caught myself sitting in front of the monitor with my jaw dropped and my mouth half open. Great video....as always

Beautiful. That extra resaw capacity working nicely on the band saw.
Great video Jay!
I half expected you to spin those chess pieces out on that lathe and do a little intricate carving.

Excellent build/project. Exquisitely executed! Veneered top actually surprised me a little. Wasn't expecting that. Well done, sir!
Wow, that's gorgeous, nice job. That fit and finish of the top sliding in is perfect.
Something really satisfying about watching all the colours switch places at 2:57. Beautiful work Jay!
Probably one of the most relaxing videos you've made. Your production quality gets better every time. Nice work, Jay
Very impressive Jay. This project highlighted your meticulous attention to detail and proper preparation and planning. Truly a work of art. Stay safe and creative brother.

Maaaate! Everything about this is beautiful. The box, to the construction to the video edit and music. Instantly a favorite.
It looks great, well thought out. This is fine woodworking for sure. all its missing is green felt on the inside.
Great project! It really turned out nice! Good to see you using the riser block on the bandsaw for resawing too.
Jay - Beautiful work. Chess boards make for great projects. The box was a great place to store the pieces.
I've been working with wood for about 20 years now. I'm self taught. But I'm not sure if I'll ever get as good as you. You do great work and inspire me to do better work. Love the videos.

all up a fantastic piece of work - the chessboard, the video work, the editing, and the choice of music - superb!
This is hall of fame quality all around! @Jay Bates. Thank you for sharing your process.
By far I think one of your best projects! I love your sled system for cutting the miters!
Your videos are superb. Incredible craftsmanship, fantastic choice of music. The videography and how you match your cuts to the music are really great. I find it quite relaxing to watch you work!
Seriously, Jay. DAMN. The project and video were incredibly inspiring. Great job all around! I'm truly awestruck at the outcome right now.
+Carter Wilson Workshop :)

That's beautiful Jay! Without a doubt one of the best chess boards I've seen. Keep it up!
Really enjoyed this build. Was just looking at my set and thinking it was time to build a nice board for it. Found the music quite relaxing, too.
Digging the Detroit redwing's cabinet door knobs... You sir, are a master woodworker.

Thanks.
I always wanted to know how to make the top without it separating, never thought of making the entire surface a veneer. Nice job!
By far my favorite Jay Bates video. This is on a whole nother level.
What an great video. Thanks for sharing. I'm new to wood working and really enjoyed watching some of the more intricate details / cuts. That certainly isn't the most simple box to create. Job well done.

Beautiful work as usual sir. Simple and elegant. My favorite kind of board.
Easily one of the nicest peices I've seen you do , you should be very happy with it.
Your work with this song is something amazing, just like the wedding gift box, perfect match between songs and images. Great!!!
Just seeing the finished piece would have been great but watching the making of it was awesome, thank you for sharing the experience.
I have to say that I think this is one of your better videos...Good job!!!

Lovely Jay. Simple, elegant, different. Loved the editing too.
Professional bro. Awesome build. The wood looks so smooth and neat.

One of your most beautiful projects and a wonderful video. I like this style sometimes. You don't always need the narration to appreciate it!
I've enjoyed your work for a while now, but this video is fantastic. Bravo. Also, that's maybe one of the most beautiful pieces I've seen you make. All around fantastic. Thanks for what you do.
Nice looking chess board and the mitred corners as well as being integrated with the sliding top is sweet. Well done.

it still amazes me how people cannot like the efforts of a persons best efforts, great job Jay
Beautiful work! The music choice for this video was mesmerizing.
