Great sermon Jeff. I really appreciate your depth of study and communication. You have inspired me to study God’s Word more deeply. You are constantly about the Word. You spend more time talking about the actual scripture than the application. Which makes the application actually makes sense. I love it. Thanks Jeff

Soldiers also asked John Baptist, "And we, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages." (Luke 3:14, ESV)
He does not tell the soldiers to leave their jobs
And they said, "Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say." (Acts 10:22, ESV)

Martyrs for Christ, does not mean allowing innocent people to die or be raped or beaten etc. If you are to be killed for your faith, that is martyrdom and noble. If you are to be killed in your bed next to your wife, leaving your children without parents and you have the capability to stop it, that is not martyrdom. If you have the means to defend others from harm from evil, and do not do it because it involves force, I would say it falls under knowing the good you can do and not doing it sin.

Good sermon on the topic in the title. I think many believers need to hear this message and even many want to know what the Bible really says about it. However, I would say Mark 16:15-20 (among several other passages) clearly opposes your conclusion regarding the purpose or usefulness of miracles. Signs (miracles) point or direct, in this context, they point to Christ and His authority. We may disagree on some nonessential doctrine, but I appreciate your ministry for taking on some topics like self defense with thorough, Biblical teaching. Thanks

@@sarahrieger4957 Yes there is a difference between defense and vengeance. The point of defense is to prevent something, the point of vengeance is to make someone pay for a perceived wrong. The ultimate outcome may be the same but the motivation is different, motivation matters to the Lord. For example if a man breaks into my home and I shoot him to prevent him from hurting my son that is defense. However if I shoot the man in the courtroom for killing my son then that is vengeance. There tends to be malice or hatred involved in vengeance. If I’m shooting my son’s murderer and I wound instead of kill him I’m probably deeply grieved I didn’t cause the amount of damage I had hoped. However if I wound rather than kill the house burglar and it effectively stops him then I’m relieved not to have taken a human life. I also think the specific situation and effects on the Kingdom matter. A lone Christian confronted by an angry mob of Muslims who sings praises and asks God to forgive them while being beaten to death may actually convert some of those people through his death. However if the same scenario presents itself and the lone Christian is standing in front of an orphanage, and some sort of attempt at defense will give the children time to escape then that is the better option. If you are protecting other people, especially unbelievers then defensive violence is more justified than if you are simply defending yourself. But even if it is only your own safety at risk I still think the situation matters, I think the likelihood of meekly submitting to a home invasion resulting in a conversion experience is pretty low, and the likelihood of the criminal being a repeat offender is pretty high. Sure you can surrender and die and go to heaven but maybe tomorrow night he robs and kills an atheist, if you have the chance to stop someone willing to do violence it is best to do so because you don’t know who their next victim will be.

Your ancestors would be Muslim reciting the shahada in the 8th century AD or still some various form of pagan if it wasnt for Christians like Charles Martel. The fact of the matter is you rely on Christian men with swords and guns to defend the faith. And its Christians men with swords and guns that made it possible for you to make a comment in this video. And sometimes it was Christian vs Christian violence to even give you the Bible you have in English so youd be able to even quote a single passage of Scripture. The Bible you have right now was paved in blood. oi vey.

In the face of death, how many Apostles killed the enemy? How many people did Jesus kill in the face of death?
The Bible is so clear: Are we to kill our enemies or give them food and water? ... *"Bless those who persecute you* ...

You’re making a category error. You’re speaking in the context of being persecuted for your faith and being martyred for it. That’s different than simply walking down the street one day and someone trying to mug you. Being martyred for your faith is different than spending time with your wife at home and someone breaking in to rape her or murder both of you. In the moment where your wife or kids are being assaulted it’s not revenge to do everything you can to protect them, even if that involves killing the assaulter or the rapist in the moment. In Luke 11 it says that a strong man’s house is protected when he guards it being fully armed. I will ask you again because you did not answer my question: If someone is raping your wife are you just going to let it happen, because “love your enemies, bro”?

I don't think many Christians hold that thought. Mainly because of this:
Colossians 2:16-23 (ESV): 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations- 21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 (referring to things that all perish as they are used)-according to human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

    Thank you for this, though the more I think about it the less I'm convicted of self defense;
Only the apostles were called to carry swords, only two of them was enough though they would be getting sent out on missions after this. If he had wanted them ALL armed for their missionary trips, 2 would not have been enough. As it stands, the majority of the apostles traveled without swords.
There are no other instances of defense in the new testament. Christians were dragged away to be humiliated, tortured and slaughtered wholesale by Nero, but there isn't a word on defending themselves against this horrible injustice. Christ and the apostles, Stephen were also unjustly murdered but didn't put up a fight.
We are called to put on the armor of god, but it is mental and spiritual, not physical. 2 Cor 10:3 describes how we make war not with human weapons, but with god's weapons, then describes debate and argument.
When we fast our flesh craves food, though it doesn't need it. The lord provides strength.
When we see danger, our flesh craves security in human methods but we don't need them. Our lives belong to the lord, when you die it will not be a surprise to him.
    THAT SAID.
I find it VERY difficult to imagine I could see a woman being violated and simply stand there, shaking my fist and rebuking the sinner for his deeds.
To see a human trafficker snatching a child and running to a van, helpless to stop them.
To watch as thugs bar the doors of a church and start a fire, then shoot anyone who tries to escape through the windows.
    BUT
Vengeance is his. He will repay. There is no injustice that goes unpunished, you must keep faith in the lord to deliver his justice AND you must love your enemies. You must not be like Jonah who hated his enemies so much that he wanted to deprive them of god's word, knowing they would repent and come to the lord. Even the most vile, hateful, evil person you imagine is not your enemy as our enemies are not of flesh and blood but of the spirit.
If you think human means can destroy the church and god, and human means are required to defend the church and god, do you really have faith in god?

I have a question, maybe someone from Apologia Studios wants to take the time to respond to it.
How to explain the translation of the word היה (hayah) in Genesis 3:22 as 'has become' and not as 'was', since it is the third person preterite tense, which would warrant a translation such as found in YLT: 'Lo, the man WAS as one of Us [and not HAS BECOME like one of us], as to the knowledge of good and evil; and now, lest he send forth his hand, and have taken also of the tree of life, and eaten, and lived to the age..'
It's hard to understand that men BECAME like gods, after eating from the tree, it would mean that they resembled God in their fallen state? Also, in other portions of Genesis the same verb hayah does get translated as 'was' (and the earth WAS without form and void, it doesn't say and the earth BECAME without form and void, although I know there is debate around that topic as well).
So maybe the question would be: how to know when to understand hayah to describe a static action (the man was like us) versus a dynamic one (became like us)..
Or: what is your opinion on the Young's Literal Translation of Genesis 3:22?

Someone else in the comments rightly put it this way. The Gospel is to go out as a witness. The Word witness in the verse he referenced literally means martyr.
As I said in my own comment. The apostles and early Church never took up arms to defend themselves against persecution and death, and I defy anyone who claims they can find either biblical or extrabiblical evidence to show me otherwise. Love your enemies. DO GOOD TO THEM WHO PERSECUTE YOU. Do not punch them in the face, turn the cheek and then pray for them. AKA = Love.
You can't show them Jesus by doing the opposite of what he did and what he said to do.

@@itrow9526 Wow that's a stretch of my response. Offensively seeking Saul to kill him, nope. Being persecuted, dying for your BELIEFS for the glory of God, and the spread of the gospel. All for it. Being murdered in bed. Watching someone being raped, watching some teens beat down a kid in an alley to death, hmmmm, pretty sure God would have you defend the weak, save the helpless. We are called to that too you know. Love your neighbor? What if your neighbor is being murdered? Love the murderer more? You have to use your head and make choice with context. I guess during the holocaust no-one should have hid jews? They would have don't good to their enemies the nazis by loving on them instead? When Jesus drove out the people in the temple, was he loving them? He was defending God's house. But, he still loved them so much that if they repented, he would die for them and welcome them in heaven. Didn't change the fact that defense was still needed currently. You can love your enemies and still drive them away. And turn the other cheek means a lot, but it does not say everything. The Bible is a big book. It's not just the sermon on the mount. So much as it is up to us, be peaceful, When it is not up to us, then what?
