This is absolute gold when it comes to navigating these issues. Early in my Christian Life I bought into the, "Christian" pacifism position. I was single at that time and once I maried my wife and had children the love I have for them lit a fire in me to do everything I could to protect them and to seek out the biblical understanding of when physical violence is righteous. Pastor Jeff is handling the word of God perfectly, using the full counsel of God and using categories instead of broad-sweeping, dangerous ideologies.🙏

Jews owning a sword was against Roman law. That's why many in the crowd carried clubs. Jesus not only told them to buy the best fighting tool, He told them to do it in violation of "arms control."

Great sermon and completely agree with what was said. Side note...I don't think Peter missed at all. If you were swinging a sword at someone's head and hit them in the side of the head...you may cut their ear off. We don't know if the dude to really lit up by this blow, only that he lost an ear and Jesus healed him. I imagine Peter's sword may have been a little dull as he was not a soldier. I could totally see this happening just the way it's written.

Defend ourselves when necessary but why we have to think and be prepared to kill others when we can just defend ourselves without killing others? The predisposition of some people’s mind on how they’ll act and react and do when they (if ever) are in a life threatening situation. Why always thinking of killing others and not and never thinking of how to just survive if possible and if not if we die we go to heaven as promised by God. Romans 13 is proscriptive, not descriptive. Generally, the .gov is God's servant to punish evil and praise good. Stealing property, extortion, illicit taxes and wage stealing, mandates outside the scope of government, murder, oppression, destruction of good, rewarding of evil, these are contrary to God. That .gov that does these evils forfeits it's roll as God's servant and becomes a really well financed gang of criminals. Such government is owned no allegiance and must be replaced in order for one to "do justly" or "do righteousnes" toward your neighbors. Quietly watching State crimes being done to others is not loving.

I think a good case could be made that killing somebody who is trying to rape another person is loving towards the person you killed, though it's obviously not enough reason on its own or even close to the primary reason you should employ lethal force in such circumstances. Similarly, you could make a good case that execution of a murderer or rapist is a loving act towards them, especially if you offer a small period of reflection between sentencing and execution (less than a week, probably, more than a few minutes)

How do we know that Jesus didn’t tell them to buy swords so he would be counted amongst the transgressors? Serious question…
“And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.”
    ‭‭
    Luke‬ ‭22:35-38‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?”

We gotta keep in mind that the Holy Spirit prophesied after the old testament by Jesus, and by John in the book of Revelation.
In 1 Corinthians 12:10 prophesy is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Paul exhorts in 1 Corinthians 31-33:
"31For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. 32And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
And John wrote in 1 John 4:1
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”
So to sum it up, yes prophets still do exist and prophesy, but it is our job to try them to find whether thay are of God or of the Antichrist. There is no 3rd option.

WOAWWW As a christian I have never found a pastor who find his way to twist and misunderstand God´s word. First this pastor is saying after last supper Peter went to buy a sword. He had not time for that. There is no mention in the bible that disciples left after supper (except Judas), atually most likely they satyed next to Jesus, specially Peter. Most likely Peter was the one with one of the swords. And actually Jesus didn´t tell them literally to buy a sword, he was making an example to understand they will face tribulation (murdering for believing in God). If he meant to go and buy a sword for self-defense, when apostles said ¨we have 2 swords¨Jesus would be saying: Good, that´s what I meant¨, but Jesus rebuked them ¨it´s enough¨, it doesn´t say ¨they are enough¨, it means rebuking, like stop you don´t understand.Peter didn´t go to buy a sword he likely had one of thos swords and used and Jesus again, rebuked him. Jesus it´s not talking about capital punishment it´s talking about if you use weapons you will die by weapons. There are not evidence Peter or other apostles defend there self within his final days upon violence, they were killed as martyrs. You will never find Apostle Paul asking Timothy to bring him a sword or advising Corinthians to buy a sword.

Christians believe in a fair trial. They deserve the death penelty, by an Authorized court if found guilty. So many misuses of scripture to validate a presupposition.
Jesus does not teach in “categories” there are no exceptions in his commands. He actually obliterates categories.
Hebrew women were commended for preserving life not lying.
There are no examples of righteous use of the sword by any apostle.
You contradict yourself when you say gospel message is spread in peace but Jesus meant for them to go out with real swords. Which is it?
Jesus taught the fullness of the law. Which was for Gods people not to kill, not to commit adultery in our minds, to commit murder in our hearts by hating. Jesus taught us what true perfection in keeping the law was.
Love ya Jeff but your arguments are weak and come from deductions and reasonings from a presupposition, not a direct teaching from Jesus or apostles about a right to self defense.
“Just War Theory” is subjective to suit mans sinful nature and actually contradicts Jesus’s commands”

    • @duaneeby6150

@Joel Roy In response to your first point that “good and evil are parallels”; I’m not sure parallels is the right word. Maybe “relative“ or “subjective” to the situation. Jeff in his message here calls them “categories' ' and that Christian Pacifism is a “category error”. You used several examples 1. Good and evil spirits; this was not a particularly good example. Yes God does use evil to accomplish his sovereign will and judgement. However he still judges those acts of evil. The example you gave of Ahab and his prophets as an example God sent an evil Spirit. Not his own spirit. And that spirit will be judged for that sin. Nebuchadnezzar was used as “God's servant” to judge Israel however he was then judged for that very thing. Committing a sinful act because God directed it doesn’t excuse it/us from judgement. It’s still a sinful act.
The other examples you used “jealousy, music” I would even add divorce and boasting as sins that aren’t sin in other contexts. They have exceptions. Divorce is sin unless in cases of infidelity. Boasting in myself is sin but boasting in God is not. Jealousy/coveting is a sin but God’s jealousy for our love is not. These exceptions are clearly laid out and written about in teachings of Christ and the apostles.
However Jesus’s command to love our enemies is clearly supported over and over again in the gospels and epistles. There are no exceptions. (Jeff tries to say that Luke 22 is the exception but handles that passage horribly) Violence is never supported in the New Testament. Romans 13 warns that the government will use the sword but does not advocate that Christians should take part in that.
Your point that there is a “difference between killing and murder” is a very common distinction. Jeff called these different “categories”. By this definition or catagory, killing an enemy is perfectly acceptable. Jesus makes no such distinction, no exceptions to the command to love our enemies.
I always find this exception, that violence in self-defense is good unless it is in response to persecution, then it’s not, to be a little humorous . If this is true then if someone threatens me or my family I must first clarify their motives. “ Are you attacking me for religious reasons? Because if not, I’m going to kill you, however if it’s because of religious persecution then you get to live”. Seriously!? Again I will repeat Jesus nor apostles give any such exception to justify taking life. Your example of what you would do if threatened (shoot legs first) are not based on scripture but your own justification. When we kill we disobey the command of Jesus to love our enemy and deny Christ has Lordship in our lives. It denies Christ just as much as saying ”I never knew him”
Your example of Ananias and Sapphira is quite a stretch to justify killing another human being. 1. Their deaths were not at the hand of Peter. God did that. 2. He is perfectly justified in doing so, we are not. 3. This doesn’t justify us killing people who lie to the Holy Spirit. ”Vengeance belongs to the Lord”

@Joel Roy You are correct, carrying weapons is not evil. Like you said weapons are not in and of themselves evil. I have weapons because I hunt. Some enjoy target shooting as a sport. There’s nothing in scripture that commands we not have weapons. You make a good point about not having them if the government forbids them. We must submit to the government if it’s laws do not violate God’s commands. Many would argue against that but I believe that this is consistent with scripture.
Based on Jesus’s command to love our enemies no I don’t believe it is consistent to serve in the military as a combatant as well as police. Now I understand the arguments for public safety, protection of the innocent and emotionally it is a “hard pill to swallow”. But we can not break one command of Jesus to fulfill another. For example; We don’t steal I order to give to the poor. I just can not find any justification for participating in the army or law enforcement, anywhere in message of the gospel under Jesus’s commands.
I also recognize this is a theology that is in the minority within the Christian church. However I have not found anyone who can justify killing of any kind using Jesus or the apostles teachings.
I think I answered your other question about the sword fulfilling prophecy in another thread.

@@duaneeby6150 Appreciate your arguments. If you are able to preserve life (and perhaps many lives in the context of say, a school shooter) by using lethal force, but do not do it and many others die, how do you reconcile that? Or if an intruder were to murder your family, and you just stand there but could have stopped it? Are we not to love the innocents as well? I would say more than the murderer? Is not that our first responsibility? In a kill or they will be killed situation? I can love my enemy and still use lethal force to stop them, because I am called to love my family as well. I can be sorry to have to use lethal force, it does not mean I do not love the lost person. But my 1st order of business would be to show my love for innocent people who will be killed too, by protecting them from the evil person bent on murder.

I'm pretty much against the claims of Durbin. I've seen many videos from him that I was completely against and see them just as his own presupposition. Even a few things here in this video,...I would either not care [since it isn't an issue I'd want to speak on], or wouldn't agree with [because it is just a faith belief].
Having said that, I am for "using a weapon for personal self defense". What? An agnostic/atheist agreeing with a Christian? Sure! Not every atheist [actually, I'm more agnostic in my worldview] is "left wing radicalized". I'm pretty much middle of the road on most topics. Some topics I will be more "left" on.....others, I'll be more "right" on. Self defense and gun rights? I'm more "right" on.

Well have fun with the wishy washiness of the left right paradigm which is simply an illusion of choice of secularism. Relying on the truth would be much more beneficial.

@@Omegha94zip So you think a person has to be "always right wing" or "always left wing"? Rather dichotomous, don't you think? The "truth", if it is proven to actually be factual, has no political agenda. It really doesn't have _any_ agenda. It is just factual.

Is it that simple though? I am questioning everything to find out what to believe. You shall not murder of course. Different than killing. Killing in defense of a person being killed, is different, or no? Someone is going to be murdered let's say. You can stop it. You don't. You let someone get murdered. Life taken. Now your'e complicit in a life taken. Perhaps you could say you didn't do the murder so you are not responsible. But if you could have prevented the murder, do you bear no responsibility?
