Words of wisdom, as a driver that drives more than 300km or about 200miles per day as average, these are the best possible choice, better than SUV and 5person family as us, even more better
I have driven this exact car with the Polestar Optimization Package (a $1295 option on the T6 AWD) and can tell you it makes a world of a difference on these cars. Shifts faster, better throttle response, more power, more torque, more power to the rear, better supercharger/turbo integration, and more responsive paddles/transmission, among other things. I wouldn't buy a new Volvo without that package.
Mark Kibbe but it should have the gearbox software as standard. Massive rip-off to charge to sort the standard cars shortcomings. I’ve got a 2019 diesel V90. The gearbox is the weakest part of the car by far
@@Bottomburbsburnbums Agreed that it should be standard, especially on the R-Design. The car with the Polestar tune is how the base car should be programmed, and the optional Polestar tune should be more enthusiast-based with even more aggressive software that gets the most they can out of the hardware. I thought the gearbox was decent, but I am used to driving a P2 XC90 V8 with the atrocious 6-speed auto that has 2-second shift times and really tall gearing, so the 8 speed feels like a dual-clutch by comparison. But it could (and should) be better.
Driven it several times. I am lucky to usually getting upgraded with car rentals and I have driven this on the US and Canadian highways as well as in the UK and Germany. It is a great car and I can only recommend it. Reliability wise it would be better than an Audi or BMW as well. And the aesthetics of this car are just really pleasing, and I never got tired of it.
Great review. I’ve got one of these in the UK but in D5 (235bhp) AWD tune with a Polestar remap on the engine and gearbox. Pulls like a train, and handles very well, even with the heavier Diesel engine. Quiet, quick and composed. I just love it.

I just picked up a V90 T5 R-Design and the greatest surprise has been how nimble and playful it is. I was expecting a much softer, more sedate car, but its steering and brakes are incredibly sharp, and even the T5 does a great job of fully utilizing its torque. It really doesn't feel like you're heaving a ship behind you it just turns and goes, their suspension setup is tremendous, barely any side hop and it feels the same at 20mph and 80mph. I haven't really gassed it as I am letting the engine break in but they take advantage of the supercharger, greatly. The torque under 2K is tremendous, the transmission knows where to stay most of the time. I think people over estimate how much they need "fast" cars. I'm a big believer that a 5-6 sec 0-60 is great for an everyday vehicle. I also couldn't care less how many cylinders the vehicle has (my everyday is a 4 and I have owned 4,6,8,12) the difference is sound and ability to adjust to inputs from the throttle (not to mention front end weight.)
@Blue Steel If you look at the vehicles that sell the most you are absolutely correct most are right below 200HP. The problem I believe is manufacturers limit the HP for fuel economy standards instead of tuning the engine which could deliver more power and get better milage. By that I mean develop the torque curve as low as possible in the RPM range; giving the driver a better feel of acceleration while also creating a system where the driver does not ring the engine out in order to move. Less RPMs means less fuel consumption. No matter what a 300 HP engine uses the same amount of fuel; doesn't matter how many cylinders, or how it is generated either by turbo or supercharger or naturally.
Any car with an automatic trans that doesn't shift properly is off of my list. Theres just simply no excuse. You can tweak certain things on a car, but unless someone can tune the trans ecu, the car is always going to be an exercise in frustration.
I optimized mine with the Polestar, it was agile before, it is a beast now, the gas mileage drops though, when you select drive mode “Polestar Engineered”
Wife had a 2018 S90 Inscription. She went through 2 sets of brake pads, a cracked 20" wheel and a set of tires in 45K before we traded it on a new lease. Still loved the car. Rode well and was relatively quick for as big of a car as it was. We had the air suspension in the rear which was just absolutely lovely in eliminating road irregularities.
Such a beautiful looking car, Volvo absolutely nailed the design. Slightly disappointed to hear that the transmission isn’t the most responsive, but at least the ride and handling seem to make up for it. Overall sounds like a great car all around, good review!
Most people buying this care more about the ride. It's a luxury wagon and they don't want to hear the engine much. Handling next and transmission shifting last. But it is good to get an enthusiast's point of view of what Volvo can improve on.
Anyone else getting the 8 Bit 80’s era Geico ads? They are Rad! So is the long roof. Love the Volvos! Also, and I’m only 1/2 way through the video, I prefer the T6 to the T8. The hybrid ads WELL over 500 lbs to the curb weight and only benefits you around town. If I lived in LA like you, the hybrid would make sense. Anywhere that the EV only range doesn’t make much sense, neither does the T8.
I drive a v90 T4 Momentum (turbo petrol, entry level) here in the UK. It's a family car. Shift points are irrelevant when everyone around here does 5-10 MPH under the speed limit wherever they go, the roads aren't wide enough for two cars to pass each other safely, and every street is constantly choked with traffic. It feels like the QE2. The brilliant infotainment, adaptive cruise control/braking, build quality, and ride comfort are the real selling points. Forget dynamic mode, especially when petrol is $7.15/gal. Just leave it in eco and take advantage of the freewheeling functionality.
@@MrCarGuy you took the words out of my head , maybe if they twin charged it and gave it an anti lag system. nevermind that would move the platform too far up market to be feasible
I love my D5 version here in the UK. I used to find the gearbox a real nuisance but the Polestar remap also adjusts the gearbox settings and makes it so much better! My biggest gripe is how the seat belt locks you in if you come up to a junction slightly quick. I makes leaning forward to check the road is clear a bit of a nuisance.
The car is really so good by itself that the absence of an I5 or I6 powertrain choice really hurts me personally and almost physically. The I5 (own one) deserved to be evolved. Nothing but reliability (and very expensive maintenance with that turbo and supercharger) issues in long-term ownership.
A Volvo 850 T5-R is what convinced me to take the next step from bolt ons with my shitbox. When I was younger and foolish we got to around 110mph on a deserted stretch of I-5 when my car hit the speed limiter. He just kept pulling, and pulling, and buh. Bye. Thank you Volvo guy.
I've got this car in blue but a T8 Recharge, so the engine driving the front with a supercharger and turbo and electric motor running the rears. I paid for the Polestar Optimised software update. Blacked out back windows and a black Volvo grill with diagonal bar with blacked rea decals. It looks mean and it's pretty fast too! Looking at around 415bhp.
The small turning circle is probably because this architecture is one of very few that use a double wishbone suspension in conjunction with a transverse engine layout.
Surprised to hear about the gearbox misbehaving in manual mode. My V90 Cross Country (in Europe) will not shift up in manual mode on its own, also it shifts down anywhere in the band. That said, when I drive in the Alps or similar roads, I almost always drive in manual as the car has no clue what lays ahead and takes you halfway through a hairpin in 6th gear if left in auto. Other than that, I love it.
These power trains and the t8 scare me enough to only want a t5 or avoid the car all together Such a gorgeous wagon I wish it had a five cylinder turbo
Yep. I have an S90 T6 Inscription now and am working with Burger to develop a JB4 for the car. I have the first working one on mine right now. It hauls ass, and we're finding out a lot with these logs. :)
I have a 2019 V60 T6 R - The transmission is the worst thing on this car, its really just programing and I'm sure they could fix it if they wanted too...I see you had the same frustration with it. Other than that it's a decent family estate.
The Polestar tune makes a huge difference. While still not perfect, it really improves the way the transmission behaves and makes the car a lot more responsive and fun to drive. I drove a non-Polestar Package V90 R-Design back to back with a Polestar Pack-equipped R-Design V90 (no other differences between the two, both T6 AWD cars on 19" wheels and steel springs) and the difference was a lot bigger than I expected.
Living in Europe for a few years now has taught me that SUVs are completely overhyped/overrated. More of these wagons need to be sold in the US. BTW - Nice Seiko Turtle
"Get in second gear!" "Why did you upshift there?!" "What if I change the mode..." ...Conversations guys have with their automatics on a daily basis... And somehow there are still people who pretend that auto is fine.
Great review and great vehicle. I love my V90 CC! Very competent across a myriad of road surfaces and handles more like a RWD than a FWD, even in snow. Thanks!
The Cross Country version of this V90 sort of seems more appealing, for the way this car would be driven 98% of time by it's owners. It's certainly a car most people that are looking into SUVs should really consider
People in the USA and I guess North America are nuts to prefer an xc90 or xc60 over this beautiful wagon and the equally beautiful v60. It's just nuts. Volvo wagons used to be very popular all over the USA when they weren't that stylish. They work great. Volvo has put enough performance into these cars for the everyday driver, the interior is fantastic, the comfort and the usability, the styling is gorgeous, yet the roads are full of xc90s and xc60s. The SUVs are nice but not everyone needs one. I go literally months without seeing a current Volvo wagon though I see a good amount of older ones. Buy wagons again, America.
Matt - the kind of guy trying to drive sporty in a V90, not realizing he's the only one who will ever redline a V90 :P As a Swede I think they will mostly drive around at 10 km/h below the speed limit while still brakeing at speed cameras :P Like all other Volvos. :P
I wonder if tuners will pulley down up the boost, and then use a little bigger turbo, up the boost add a little more fuel and... see what it does,.. personally I wouldn't waste the time and money I would drive it as well maybe.. great content as always!!
Once you crest $60k a 4 banger is a tough pill to swallow. However, they did such an amazing job on the design that I think I can probably look past it.
Volvo needs to send you “Polestar Tuned” models to compare to the stock tuning. Would love to see your reaction and especially after driving the stock tune.
@@odiespankers07 well yea I know that existed, but I meant on the new generation. The T8 is too heavy and bulky, like said in the video, it doesn't feel sporty the same way even a normal T6 R line does.
Matt seemed a bit disappointed in the actual 0-60 time, however said it's relatively quick. Pretty crazy though that 5 and a half seconds to 60 doesn't sound quick in your family hauler station wagon.
Something about a super charger and turbo charger on such a small engine make me think its not a 300k mile power train with out lots of $$$ to keep it running. I wish it just had a turbo straight 6, I want a wagon badly... but no one makes a good one worth the money.
Funny... you are driving my first choice car that I hope to purchase in the next 6 months and you mentioned you have a Focus RS. I have an ST which has been a joy to own. Hubby is thinking he'll keep the ST and I will get my V90. I am the sandwich generation looking to the future of needing to shuttle elders around. They cannot get into SUV's people.
They streamlined their engine line to just one 2.0 4 cylinder to hold them over until electric is mainstream. They add supercharging or hybridization to it when they want more power
From what I've experienced of modern Volvo engines and their gearboxes, they just don't match their stats. They feel sluggish and unrefined. Feels almost agricultural when compared to any of the Germans. They do feel like their engines are too small for the size of car (for the XC90 mostly)
@rockn roll I was more talking about the stupidity of crossovers. Things like Fiat 500's on stilts, that are still only FWD. And of course, other cars like that. In the USA, your SUV's and pickups, tend to be 4WD, and can actually still be used offroad. Our crossovers, on the other hand, can't be used offroad, they are purely road cars, they only look like a 4x4. Yes, it's as stupid as it sounds.
Even though I like Volvos, I would definitely go for a Mercedes E wagon if I was on the maket. Luxurious and comfortable for daily also agile enough for occasional sporty driving. Pre-owned ones start around 40k (MY17 - MY18) as apposed to 35k for V90. And +5K is worth it IMO.
I wonder if a tune could fix that downshift lag? Like, BMW has xHP for ZF stuff right? Like I think a solid remap could sort that out and frankly, that’d be a small price to pay for the package as a whole.
oh they depreciate just fine lmao. I priced out one for around 67k recently and can find similar optioned ones pre owned for around 40k with anywhere between 14k and 35k miles
I own a Cross Country and it is floatier and rolls a bit. That said, it is super comfortable and gives you lots of feel if you drive enthusiastically down a twisty road.
Neat so you have good head clearance and composed wheel base and width for a stable drive. they used to share an engine w fords familys jaguars 4.2 that was some pep. [sound damping quiets you in that]
I'm actually looking for a fast-ish wagon (need car seat space). What's your pick between Polestar V60 and V90? In end both right about $67k. Love the sportiness of V60 but if it doesn't drive that way, what's the point?
BRING BACK WAGONS!

No matter what a 300 HP engine uses the same amount of fuel; doesn't matter how many cylinders, or how it is generated either by turbo or supercharger or naturally.
Правильно заметили. На большой скорости гоняют только юноши. Приличное поколение любит ездить с комфортом.
Any car with an automatic trans that doesn't shift properly is off of my list. Theres just simply no excuse. You can tweak certain things on a car, but unless someone can tune the trans ecu, the car is always going to be an exercise in frustration.
you can get a polestar tune that remaps the trans and give you more power
Aftermarket website called hiltontuning.com can take care of this. Tuned my S60R twice through them. Well respected in the Volvo community.
@@theguy3112 Hilton Tuning doesn't have anything for SPA-platform vehicles.
I optimized mine with the Polestar, it was agile before, it is a beast now, the gas mileage drops though, when you select drive mode “Polestar Engineered”
It shift's properly he's used to Performance cars.
The Evolution of XXI Century Volvo:
1. 5 cylinders
2. 6 cylinders
3. 4 cylinders
4. No cylinders, soon.
5 cylinders 🤘🤘
let's not forget the v8 in s80 and xc90
3 cylinder like the new Koenigsegg
@@o0260o Volvo have its own 3 cylinder 1.5T, at least in EU.
Just be glad 3 cylinders wasn't the next evolution
This is the only car that Volvo have made that I've like and would seriously consider buying, I love these things.
True.
And V90 is not the best city car by any means.
At least not in Europe.
Great looking wagon. I miss my 850 Turbo Wagon. Unfortunately I can't afford one new, but I'll be keeping an eye on these in the used market for sure.
This generation of Volvo's are stunning automobiles. When they throw an inline 6 in one, I'll get serious about buying one.
I6 - not gonna happend.
Only I4 in this car.
Then you won't get one. It's not going to happen. They are going hybrid and then electric. But I agree, the current gen of Volvos are quite nice.
I've got a 2020 V60 CC in birch white metallic, black interior with all options. I love it, especially the Bowers audio !
Hows the storage facility going ? Keep up the good work stay safe
My current car and I LOVE it 🥰
I drive a v90 T4 Momentum (turbo petrol, entry level) here in the UK.
If only they made this with the old T6 (6 cylinder) and RWD..
if only it still had the b5254(5 cylinder)
@@2JZDestroyer love the sound of 5 cylinders. Made the Volvo (and Audi) distinctive..
And if China didn’t own them
@@2JZDestroyer That engine was great but was too old. The I5 deserved a new variant.
I makes leaning forward to check the road is clear a bit of a nuisance.
those front seats look heavenly
Jeff Gluck they are
The car is really so good by itself that the absence of an I5 or I6 powertrain choice really hurts me personally and almost physically. The I5 (own one) deserved to be evolved.
Nothing but reliability (and very expensive maintenance with that turbo and supercharger) issues in long-term ownership.
I love these elegant wagons. Too bad, It's mostly about the SUV in the US market.
I like it but if I were going to spend 60k or more on a wagon,it would have to be the new Audi RS6. That car is sooo badass!!👌🏽
And they look even better in police livery. Swedish police uses the V90 and the V90 CC in D5 spec.
Is Matt wearing a gold Seiko Turtle? Damn. That is a sweet wrist axe!

The hell is a wrist axe?
definitely enjoyed that drive with you. felt like i was there. Cant wait to take my S90 on an open road trip with scenery. great vid.
I love these Volvo videos. I hope people buy them
They're selling well. But not the wagons or even the sedans that much. The SUVs are selling well.
What helps you guys more? Watching your youtube videos or listening to the podcasts?
Do both!
I prefer the One Takes but can learn a lot on the podcasts, depending who is on.
The "head slap" button is amazing
These power trains and the t8 scare me enough to only want a t5 or avoid the car all together
Such a gorgeous wagon
I wish it had a five cylinder turbo
My sister has a V90 Cross Country and loves it!
Конечно! Ведь она права на 100%!
I feel like this car has a lot of tuning potential if we can find a way to work with the complex twincharging system
Yep. I have an S90 T6 Inscription now and am working with Burger to develop a JB4 for the car. I have the first working one on mine right now. It hauls ass, and we're finding out a lot with these logs. :)
@@DivaniKingston Bro, you have to make a video once its finished!
I have a 2019 V60 T6 R - The transmission is the worst thing on this car, its really just programing and I'm sure they could fix it if they wanted too...I see you had the same frustration with it. Other than that it's a decent family estate.
The Polestar Engineered tuning from the dealer might help and update your transmission’s software!
@@SegerGiesbers Mines already Polestar Engineered....so no same deal its really just not a great transmission, they should have put the ZF in it.
Adam Crain I know what you mean! But I meant more like Mark is saying. It improves the standard box
The gearbox is the same Aisin unit as 4-cylinder Camry. What do you expect?
Living in Europe for a few years now has taught me that SUVs are completely overhyped/overrated. More of these wagons need to be sold in the US. BTW - Nice Seiko Turtle
James Carter - agree on both counts re: car and watch 👍🏼
"Get in second gear!"
"Why did you upshift there?!"
"What if I change the mode..."
...Conversations guys have with their automatics on a daily basis... And somehow there are still people who pretend that auto is fine.
CasterTown autos are fine. This one just sucks lol.
CasterTown that’s why everything needs a CVT
It’s a family hauler not a sports car. Automatics are perfectly serviceable for nearly all intended uses.
ervin nothing more boring rubbery junk than a CVT, nobody has fun with that. give me a decent DCT or just a simple manual
@@ervin7178 Wtf is wrong with you
Great review and great vehicle.
V90 is so sweet!! Super rare too.
Once again- Gorgeous car, if it had a more engaging powertrain and wasn't Chinese owned now I might consider it as a daily.
I have a V90 Cross Country D5. Wish you guys could get the diesel. It pulls like a train
yeah, no diesels in the US, especially after the VAG fiasco.
Ваши слова на вес золота. Все помешались на кроссоверах. Им надоели универсал, седан. Видимо потому,что в Америке много крупного населения.
I ordered the shirt last week. Can't wait to get it!
I see you remembered your hand sanitizer.
Ipd is probably on it
Once you crest $60k a 4 banger is a tough pill to swallow. However, they did such an amazing job on the design that I think I can probably look past it.
Volvo needs to send you “Polestar Tuned” models to compare to the stock tuning. Would love to see your reaction and especially after driving the stock tune.
Yes my V90 has Polestar tuning, worth every cent!
Imagine a V60 Polestar but with this engine tuned to like 350hp and lightened to like 3700-3800lbs and none of that electric ballast
@@odiespankers07 i test drove a 2015 V60 Polestar it was used and decent price, definitely a great car but i think felt heavier than 3500-3800 lbs..
@@odiespankers07 well yea I know that existed, but I meant on the new generation.
The T8 is too heavy and bulky, like said in the video, it doesn't feel sporty the same way even a normal T6 R line does.
Always love a good wagon!
@10:30 is pure talent, moving at that pace and making complete sentences geee
Matt seemed a bit disappointed in the actual 0-60 time, however said it's relatively quick. Pretty crazy though that 5 and a half seconds to 60 doesn't sound quick in your family hauler station wagon.
Something about a super charger and turbo charger on such a small engine make me think its not a 300k mile power train with out lots of $$$ to keep it running. I wish it just had a turbo straight 6, I want a wagon badly... but no one makes a good one worth the money.
Wayne Carini found Paul Newman's type R wagon and I remember thinking I'd drive that looks good low and green ....
Saw JRE podcast with Greg Fitzsimmons on the Volvo playlist. My Man.
God I miss driving these roads.
Funny... you are driving my first choice car that I hope to purchase in the next 6 months and you mentioned you have a Focus RS. I have an ST which has been a joy to own. Hubby is thinking he'll keep the ST and I will get my V90. I am the sandwich generation looking to the future of needing to shuttle elders around. They cannot get into SUV's people.
You need this baby in passion red.
You can get a Polestar tuned from the dealer for $1,200. It will liven that trans and engine right up.
Amazing as always Matt!
Does Volvo still make 5 cylinder engines? I used to have a S60 2.5T and I absolutely loved that car!
No.
They streamlined their engine line to just one 2.0 4 cylinder to hold them over until electric is mainstream. They add supercharging or hybridization to it when they want more power
@@karbuckle8294 in fact in EU they have also 3 cylinder engine. 1.5T.
They stopped making 5 and 6 cylinder engines about 4 years ago.
Daaam matt looking slimmer! 👌
From what I've experienced of modern Volvo engines and their gearboxes, they just don't match their stats. They feel sluggish and unrefined. Feels almost agricultural when compared to any of the Germans. They do feel like their engines are too small for the size of car (for the XC90 mostly)
Very beautiful exterior.
That road!!! 🤩🤩🤩
Wish the Japanese made station wagons. Seems only luxury car maker make them which are expensive.
@rockn roll Probably because we can't get people out of their lifted SUV's and pick up trucks that will never be used for their intended purpose.
@@dekoldrick Trust me, Americans use their SUV's and pick ups as intended, far more than any European.....

Bring the Subaru Levorg to America
Even though I like Volvos, I would definitely go for a Mercedes E wagon if I was on the maket. Luxurious and comfortable for daily also agile enough for occasional sporty driving. Pre-owned ones start around 40k (MY17 - MY18) as apposed to 35k for V90. And +5K is worth it IMO.
Interesting how BMW and Audi get no mention (they need to stop being lazy).....
@@mattevans4377 Yea, especially BMW
@@TheBli7krieg I like the RS4 and RS6 but the rest of Audi's wagons are meh.

Beautiful design.
I wonder if a tune could fix that downshift lag? Like, BMW has xHP for ZF stuff right? Like I think a solid remap could sort that out and frankly, that’d be a small price to pay for the package as a whole.
Damn thats a really nice road
I remember a time when 0-60 in the mid 5's were considered quick, it's Lamborghini Countach territory. Now you have 4 door wagons doing it.
There are cars that are doing it in the mid 4s now. That's nuts to me. I think for most drivers, cars now may be too fast for their skills.

Is the cross country version of this wagon floatier? Does it trade the handling for comfort and ground clearance?
I own a Cross Country and it is floatier and rolls a bit. That said, it is super comfortable and gives you lots of feel if you drive enthusiastically down a twisty road.
the names correspond to the texas instrument calculators that is running the car

Volvos aren't mean for sport, they are luxurious for their price
3:02 They gave it an award....For being the most expensive 2.0L?
Neat so you have good head clearance and composed wheel base and width for a stable drive. they used to share an engine w fords familys jaguars 4.2 that was some pep. [sound damping quiets you in that]
Ford and Volvo used same inline 5.
But Volvo V8 is not the same as Jag.
I'm actually looking for a fast-ish wagon (need car seat space). What's your pick between Polestar V60 and V90? In end both right about $67k. Love the sportiness of V60 but if it doesn't drive that way, what's the point?
