  • Sailing the North Atlantic can be tricky in the best of times, and these are not the best of times. It's a challenging sail with rolly conditions and strong winds, but a rogue waves causes damage that leaves the crew rationing. Will our equipment make it to Iceland?

    So good to see a real sailing channel for a change! What with the hundreds of layabouts we normally see being passed off as 'sailing channels', when they just look for support to bum around in the sunshine at everybody else's expense, this channel is refreshing!

    Proper sailing, my kind of sailing for sure, love Eanna's comment "some people take planes"
    We've been hit by a rogue wave at 2 am, I was off watch sleeping and thought we'd lost the rig, massive crash as it hit us, water was coming down the companionway hatch like a waterfall, both electric bilge pumps switched on, fortunately an open transom but also about a foot deep in the cockpit, all got a bit frenetic for a while after that.

      @hubbards 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was just thinking the same when I read your comment. I used to get so seasick myself when I was younger. Usually after about three days I was OK., but I can remember one time being down below in a bunk with a dishpan beside my head and not being able move. At that time I couldn't have cared less if the boat sank or not. Kind grew out of it as I got older.

    Just wow. You guys are champs and I have to say Mo is doing a pretty tough job as well. I've been on both sides of the seasickness thing so just... kudos to a great crew, all of you.
    I have to say, this has made up my mind on the engine panel. I mounted our new one (switched to a Beta 35) in the old spot but it's going inside the cabin now. I've always felt like that cockpit well is going to fill up sometime--not if but when. We've had water up to our ankles but I know we've seen nothing yet. (Westsail 32)

    As for the flood, I would look into making drainage better for the cockpit, I hope not, but you might get in a situation that you get a few in a short period of time. I also have a center cockpit. Have two 2 inches hoses straight down to separate seacocks. It drains a full cockpit in less than a minute (it had been tested on a sister boat). This sister boat took on at least 5 waves into the cockpit in a span of 2 hours...
    I have kind of the same problem with a engine room vent that can take a lot of water in case of a rough wave. Still looking for solutions on that... So far, a kind of removable snorkel (4x4 vehicle inspired) seems to be the best alternative for bad weather.

    • @markthomasson5077
      @markthomasson5077 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amazing that you could set out on such a serious endeavour without considering draining the cockpit and keeping water out of the engine and electrics. Lesson learned I hope.

    I've sailed on your boat many times with a previous owner. The helm is very very heavy. It always felt to me like a lot of friction in the system and I'm not surprised your autopilot has trouble keeping up.
    On another topic, Xantrex inverters are garbage. They fail at the slightest abnormality. I've been through two of them and never again. Get something else.

    • @svargyle

  • @paial
    @paial 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Run from this expensive marine inverter.. yes, they are nice, but you can have 2 or 3 of the (solar) off-grid type for the price of one. Also, not a bad idea to have a 500w one just as a spare for the camera/laptop/etc charging...

  • @philipgregory5392
    @philipgregory5392 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    on my hydraulic autopilot I had to reduce accuracy (can't remember proper terminology) but it allowed boat to drift off course before correcting. This put less of a load on the autopilot motor and hydraulic pressure. End result my AP stopped kicking out...

  • @msnpassjan2004
    @msnpassjan2004 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry to hear about the inverter loss, that is a lot of money! These guys saved me a ton of money finding a battery UPS for my CPAP machine. DIY Solar With Will Prowse - he does some solid reviews on inverters on TH-cam and he has free forum website. HoboTech also does solid reviews and is the reason I use Jackery as a battery backup / UPS for my CPAP machine. I live in a house so my little solar panel is a novelty but if I get to go van life or sailing I will just buy whatever these guys have tested and recommend.

      Absolutely happy with it. Our CPT autopilot has been steering us everywhere since 2013. :) We are a 42 foot full keel double ender and weighed 39,000 lbs the last time we got weighed in the travel lift. Not too long ago our CPT steered 100% of the way from Scotland up to Svalbard, and back, and through some really awful offshore weather.
      It was a really tough sail and the CPT handled everything like a champ:

    You need a backup obviously

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Originally the CPT wheel mounted autopilot was our backup for the hydraulic RAM autopilot. Later on the CPT would become our primary autopilot, and we got a spare CPT as a backup. One of the great things about the CPT autopilot is that if any part of it breaks at sea, that part can be very easily and quickly swapped out with a spare without any special tools or knowledge. Literally, any part of it can be swapped out in 5 minutes or less.

    Why are watchs do short?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ideally, we like to have 3 people on a watch rotation, 3 hours on and 6 hours off. But if we have only 2 doing watches, then of course the on watch duration is the same amount as the off watch. I think 3 hours usually works best for this, and then as conditions get worse and watches more exhausting we sometimes have shortened the on/off watch time, all the way down to only 15 minutes.

    How do you watch for icebergs at night?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Radar, and a high powered spotlight can help a lot. But if we were really worried then we might heave to and drift at a very slow speed until daybreak.

    Im looking at a CPT for my 46ft trimaran how long have you had it? and how would you rate it? ... why did the pins break...it didn't look like the weather was that rough

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had a CPT autopilot from 2009-2016, then replaced it with the new and improved CPT model. I still have the original, now a backup ready to swap out with the new one if I ever need to. I have sailed over 40,000 nautical miles on offshore passages with the CPT autopilot doing all of the steering. I think it’s a fantastic product. It’s affordable, reliable, easy to install, easy to use, draws very little power, and I greatly appreciate knowing that if it ever did break down at sea then I could just swap it out with a new one within minutes. The shear pins are designed to break if the autopilot ever gets overloaded to prevent any serious damage. This has happened to me only a few times. Broken shear pins can be replaced with spares in minutes. I suspect that the shear pins may weaken over time (many thousands of hours) and maybe that’s why they broke at that time. We had sailed with those pins for a couple of years already in all kinds of conditions. Most recently we sailed from the Scotland to Faroe to Svalbard directly and went through some awful weather. The CPT did great throughout the whole trip and back and the sheer pins never broke.

      @drakeParagon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We didn't get to film it, but we were having problems with our Danish Aries wind vane. On my previous boat I sailed for many thousands of miles with an original English Aries "Lift Up" vane. I loved that wind vane! I'm still trying to find a used Aries Lift up vane to replace the one we have now.

      Hey Scott, we appreciate you watching our videos and love being able to bring you on this sailing journey with us to Greenland and beyond. If you’d like to help us make ad free videos then you can join our community at patreon.com/DrakeParagon. For as little as $2 a month you'll get access to the episodes up to a week early without any commercial interruptions PLUS there are bonus videos with extra footage that didn't make it into regular episodes
      We would love to be able to make all of our videos commercial free. Perhaps one day we’ll have enough patrons to be able to do that so that everyone, whether they support the videos or not, will be able to watch them without any ads.
      Thanks again for joining us on this adventure and fair winds to you!
