My awesome brother gave me one of these with the San Mai blades for Christmas. Its my first high end knife and I am totally impressed. As a long time worker in the food industry, and one that has cut hundreds of thousands of veggies, meats, whathave you with lots of different blades, this knife feels like a fine a knife as I have ever picked up. I dont know if Id rather build a shelter or cut up a nice salad with it. I am blown away with the quality at the price point.
OMG, this knife can cut, apples, pears, cheese, and even sausage! Where did they come up with these crazy ideas? And why do I always end up hungry from watching these videos?
As a master hunter... i often need to whip out my chopping board in the middle of nowhere and dice up some cheese, salami, fresh fruit and some freshly baked french bread and serve it up on a polished silver severing tray. I regularly attack pieces of hanging meat and cut through miles of cardboard and punch through the hood of cars... up till now i have been using a plastic spork, thankyou cold steel for answering my prayers! XD
@blinddesolation that's because paper or carboard gets rid of the edge/sharpness of your blade very very quickly ... for example thats why a utility or handcraft utility knife always comes with a fair amount of spareknives ... do a test take a utility knife and go cut a couple of boxes for a while u'll be surprised on how quickly it gets dull :) it's really true !
Now this is a knife! Between the Master Hunter and the Gerber Big Rock I took the Gerber, only because of the price difference compared to the lighter duty I'd be using it for. The Gerber is fine for me now. The Master Hunter is for another day though! Hopefully a day comming soon lol!
?? Hey Cold Steel How Does San-Mai iii edge retention compare to the carbon 5. Also arent u due for another batch of product testing videos, its been a while?? Thanks in andvance.
Hey buddy, i left that comment 2 years ago. It was just a joke, i do appreciate what CS are demonstrating in the video. People can buy great knifes from Cold Steel, i only wish they also sold a sense of humour. Take care :)
Not really. San Mai III uses VG1 as a core steel which is a good steel, near the top for intermediate steels, but Carbon (so long as it's treated right) will keep an edge better.
I'm trying to decide between the Kobun and the master hunter...i like the survival benefits of the master hunter, but i also like the fighting benefits of the kobun....also the kobun is the longest knife i am able to carry legally for edc....also the master hunter is thicker whick means more durable. can the master hunter be used as a combat knife? i mean its 4 1/2 inches...so it's only about an inch shorter than the kobun, it shouldn't make that much of a diffrence....what do you think? Thanks!
Like you said, the Kobun is gonna be better as a fighter and the hunter is better as an outdoors knife. You can pierce some armor with that Kobun but you can really baton the heck out of that master hunter. Yer choice really. As an allrounder, i'd definitely take the Master Hunter. I'm looking to get the San Mai III version for myself.
I wish i could afford both...lol....alas i need to chooose one.....its going to be my smaller knife to complement the gurkha kukri i'm going to get in the future. so i guess i should get the one that can be used as a survival tool and a fighting tool....Thanks for your help!
the tests performed were designed to show the quality/versatility of the blade and the sharpness of it. refrain from making stupid comments if you don't know anything about knives ok?
for those who wonder why they are cutting through cardboard its because they wanto show you how good this knife keeps its edge.. its a good test to show because cardboard contains clay it usually i will blunt a knife fast .
I have this knife in VG1 San Mai III. Why did they use the Carbon 5 model for the cutting test? Doesn't the San Mai version hold the same hardcore edge retention?
What a crock! I have this knife and after gutting two deer this blade is dull. I also have the Recon Tanto and after batoning a few pieces of wood it, too, is dull. These guys must be using some sort of super steel for these videos.
@shibdiby i love these vids but the fruit and card was just a bit stupid lol all the other tests i think are good though. amazing how the knifes go though the ropes now that testing a knife :)
Cold steel's video are cheesy buuuut they do make awesome quality knives. I own this one actually. There are better knives but cold steel is hard to beat for the price.
ahh i think they are cool looking blades, but the advertisment is very stupid! i would never advertise a tool this way. also, the men in this seems like they are shady goons!

So when are the cold steel cardboard holder and table coming out on the market?

What steel were the Master Hunters that were made in Japan and marked "Cold Steel Inc Ventura Calif Made in Japan"??
I have the carbon v version made in the u s,have some rust probably the best knife in the market the design is flawless
@2piecechickenbox cardboard is one of , if not the, most damaging object a blade can cut, it will take an edge off of any knife

so i have my master hunter and ive used it a lot and the labeling and words are worn off, and im wondering if i could still get it resharpened
Not really. San Mai III uses VG1 as a core steel which is a good steel, near the top for intermediate steels, but Carbon (so long as it's treated right) will keep an edge better.
at the end they say i want to see anyone match the knife cold steel makes, try fallkniven knives
The knife is good for hunting, but there is a gap between the handle and the blade.Blood gets there
+Алексей Юмашев wax it bitch!
It was starting to get dull towards the end. I could see it ripping. It's a lot more than a stainless could do but there are advantages to both.

I can imagine after they finish cutting all that cardboard... "oh shoot, I forgot to press record!"
Is Carbon five or San Mai III better? (edge retention)

hey @csknives, how are these knives on skinning big game animals such as deer, bear etc?
Hi, we thank you for your question. At this time, we have only tested it out on small game birds such as rotisserie chickens. Hope this helps
the tests performed were designed to show the quality/versatility of the blade and the sharpness of it.

allways with a nice heavy metal soundtrack on the back...yeah
I have this knife in VG1 San Mai III. Why did they use the Carbon 5 model for the cutting test? Doesn't the San Mai version hold the same hardcore edge retention?

That is a snack? Damn that is dinner for two in many parts of the world!
I hope another steel like carbon 5 will be reproduced.
to show the defensive capabilities
do all your packages come with lollipops? cause with my kukuri i got two lollipops
you know, my friend the apples are the ultimate test for eny kinda of blades. if you pased them, your golden.
@shibdiby i love these vids but the fruit and card was just a bit stupid lol all the other tests i think are good though. amazing how the knifes go though the ropes now that testing a knife :)
damn that cardboard was pretty impressive if it was legit. but i bet it was like the shamwow commercial
Cold Steel is a solid brand ,I have only two of their knives for now.But wasting so much material and resources is bad!
Carbon V is very good
thank you very much.
i dont thin kits reprofileable its broke off like a good 3/4 inches, anyway im replacing it with teh machete kukuri
Now I want a snack.. and I don't have a master hunter :(
There are other ways to dispose of that much cardboard its called a shredder or simply burn it
nevermind like 30 minutes after i posted that the tip on mine broke off.
I thought cheese was the penultimate test for a knife.
Cold steel would have been a great seller if not for their vidoes.
i really don't understand the significance of cutting fruit
jack the ripper would love one of these at 5:11
nice apple slices, bro
COLD STEEL COOKING.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of this demo. They have better ones.
this guys like to eat...that's easy to see....
wow. a homeless person could've made a nice temporary shelter for multiple people if you donated that cardboard. what a waste. :(
ahh i think they are cool looking blades, but the advertisment is very stupid! i would never advertise a tool this way. also, the men in this seems like they are shady goons!
