  • Learn how to use black watercolor and particularly how to use it for painting realistic black fur on animals and insects.
    I use a variety of demonstrations and an actual tutorial where I am painting black spots on a leopard to break down the process into easy stages. Many watercolorists will choose to avoid using black paint, or they may mix their own. I embrace black but I too will do some mixing so that the color is not too flat but looks more lifelike and realistic.
    If you found this video useful and would like to see me painting black feathers can I suggest you watch this video next: • How to Paint a Bird - ... where you will see me add the final details to the black feathers on an Osprey.

    Thank you! My Black and Tan Cavalier King Charles Spaniel recently passed and I have been searching for watercolor tutorials on how to paint fur in a realistic way. I can see the colors in her fur and was wondering whether black, mixed with other colors, would be too harsh - and whether it would be preferable to use a paynes grey or mix a dark grey with burnt sienna and ultramarine blue instead. This answered those questions. Now for how to paint long, wavy fur that flows in several directions.

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Deborah, I'm sorry to her about your dog, but what a lovely way to her by creating a painting. Black fur can be tricky to create, and I agree sometime mixing say lamp black with another colour can be a little too harsh. This will change from subject to subject though. ~The colour combinations you suggested would be good to try out on some scrap watercolour paper first, just to see how it looks when dry. I have created a video on here to do with mixing various blacks, so this may also give you some ideas. bit.ly/3TMffNc
      Enjoy the painting process and take your time, look deep into the reference photograph for those background colours. Paul 🎨

      Hi, sadly not so much for acrylics as acrylics is an opaque medium, whereas watercolours are transparent. Saying that, you could still use the main structure of the video, i.e outline drawing, how to view a reference photo, what to look for, brush directions and the overall shape of the animal. Paul 🎨

    Your videos are so wonderful. I just started my artistic journey and your videos are elevating my game quickly! When mixing other colors with black, do you recommend mixing only warm colors with Ivory Black and only cool colors with Lamp Black due to their inherent warm/cool properties, or doesn’t it matter?

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lynn, thank you very much for your kind words. I tend to look at the reference photo first and see if the dark colours within the animal has cool or warm colours 'behind the scenes'. This how I decide which mix to use. Sometimes I would use both mixes again depending on the subject photograph. Paul 🎨

    • @zenfulpainter
      @zenfulpainter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Specifically, I am curious about mixing colors into either Lamp black or Ivory black. For example, because Ivory black has inherent warm tones, would you only mix warm pigments with it. Likewise, would you only mix cool pigments with Lamp black, or does it make no difference.?

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you certainly can, but remember 'less is best' when you use the white. So if you are not sure if you have added enough white or start to fiddle too much, take a break and decide after a coffee, it's easy to overdo it. Paul 🎨

    Do you use black watercolor and what are your tips for using it within your artwork?

    • @ogulcanyolcu8714
      @ogulcanyolcu8714 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use it a lot. I don't do classical watercolors much, I try to darken the colors with black to get muddy, dark moody atmospheres on the paper. Even the brightest color on the paper consists a little bit of black but I let it shine in that darkness. In all the dark browns, I put some but not much, weird red tones to divert the focus.

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ogulcanyolcu8714 I like your way of using black, very similar to the way I tend to use it. I know it's not the 'traditional' way to obtain a dark colour but it's the way we like to paint. Plus, I feel the right way to paint is the way you enjoy the most. Anyone like to add to this?... :-)

    Such great tips! I am attempting to paint a dark grey cat (my daughter's). Do you have any tips for grey fur?

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rebecca, get fur can be tricky, you still need a few finer darker colours within the fur to give it a bit of depth. Mostly greys and whites is the way I would go. The grey colour will depend on your subject, photo etc, but I would look at colours such as phthalo blue with a touch of burnt umber just for an example. It can be mixed by combining the three primary colours, red, yellow and blue together. Adding a little more blue to go towards the grey side. Play with the paints and do plenty of testing before you commit yourself to the main piece. Paul 🎨

    Hi Paul, this video is amazing ! How long do you give yourself in a painting session before needing a break ? Also can you combine water colour with pencil crayon, I am using a very smooth Bristol board and delighted with the result but it doesn’t seem to like watercolour very much? What paper do you recommend for watercolour please? Thank you for your lovely videos, they are very inspiring xx

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Christine, thank you very much for commenting on my video. I do tend to take regular breaks probably on average every hour, it may only be to pop the kettle to make a coffee, so I'm only away from the painting for maybe 10 minutes or so.
      As for pencil crayon Christine, I haven't really tried this. I suppose it depends on whether the crayon is oil or water based, if oil it will most likely disperse the water when applied over the top. So my best advice would be a combination of watercolour pencils with watercolour and a means of adding finer details. Paul 🎨

    If I’ve already painted a black animal and didn’t add color, can I add some cool or warm tones after I’m done?

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Annie, yes you can. If the paint isn't to thick you can add a one light pass of colour over the top. Try this in a small area first to be sure and only go over the once. If you need another pass of colour give it a dry first otherwise you will end up blurring the details and colours. Black can move quite easily! Test on some scrap watercolour paper first as well, just so you are familiar with the outcome. Paul :-)
